I can't afford 2 Nexus 4's and my wife wants an unlocked phone also. I have an HTC Flyer for sale and have been approched several times about a trade and I thought maybe I could trade for an unlocked android phone similar to the Nexus 4. Problem is I know almost nothing about unlocked android phones.
My question is to use the phone, without a sim card, with my wifi hotspot as a wifi phone with GrooveIP and be able to use android apps like Freenote, Antipaper Notes and Cool Tools with the largest screen available what kind of older touch screen phone should I consider?

Thanks for your reply.
If you're looking to save a few bucks pick up a second hand nexus s. It's supported by Google through jelly bean not to mention by the development community. Probably get one for a c-note.

My post was asking about which phone would be the best for the desired usage. I was not asking how we should live our lives. I just mentioned the circumstances to give a little background to aid in understanding why I was posting the question not for to receive family advice. This is not the forum for personal or family advice.
What you do with your wife is not my business and I really don't want to know or care.

Thanks for your reply, but that is a phone for sale and I am trying to consider a local trade of my wifi HTC Flyer for a phone. Would a Nexus fit these requirements? Without a sim card, using my wifi hotspot work as a wifi phone with GrooveIP and be able to use android apps with a stylus like Freenote, Antipaper Notes and Cool Tools? Since it has a 3.7 inch touch screen the screen should work (I think).

Yeah it should work all apps would work and groove IP would allow you to make calls over WiFi.
A regular capacitive stylus would work n the touch screen but how well it will work I don't know
Like others have said, Galaxy Nexus.
Its the closest you can get to the Nexus 4 without being the Nexus 4.
Good luck

For sure the regular capacitive stylus doesn't work too well but with some of the note apps they work well enough to make short, to remember, notes if you can read your own writting.
I find that you get more bang for your buck using swappa.com rather than ebay. Much less of a chance of being screwed too.
And to the clown taking shots at the OP. This economy is in the ****ter maybe you're not feeling it as hard as others. Not everyone can afford the latest and greatest. There was absolutely no need to belittle someone for asking a simple question.
Nexus S
It'll be hard to find older phones similar to the Nexus 4 (as per your title) as it has pretty high end specs.
But the older generation Nexus S (it has a 4 inch not 3.7 inch screen btw) should be snappy enough, plus has jelly bean and will continue to have xda support me thinks. That or the original Galaxy S (also 4 inch), the HTC Desire HD (4.3 inch) or Motorola Defy (3.7 inch but durable)
Hope that helps

Nexus 4...Alternatives
I was gonna start a new thread, but this seems relevant. I am STRONGLY considering the Nexus 4, but 2 things are putting me off: 1. Non-removable battery. and 2. The poor reported battery life from various review sources. The later wouldn't be so bad if the former wasn't an issue. Anyways, I'm curious to know of any other phones out there with similar specs AND price (i.e. no overpriced Samsung crap.) I'm talking about the 8GB version for $300, to be specific. Also, should be non-contract GSM for T-Mobile network.

Thanks I have never heard of a Galaxy Player. It gives another option for a trade and seems it may also do what I need just need to do some more research as it seems to come in different sizes.
I'm not sure how I broke the rules or went off topic when I'm posting in a thread named "similar to a nexus 4."
But I'm asking for suggestions about other phones similar to the Nexus 4 (in specs and price) with a removable battery. and I'm particularly not interested in high end Samsung phones (generally those in the Galaxy lines) appear to be comparatively overpriced. if this offends mods using said phones, I do apologize. I'll be more respectful to your feelings from here on :]

My father is not very computer literate and he has trouble doing certain tasks on his computer. I'm wondering if I should buy a used galaxy tab for him. He has not used android, but it seems to me, besides the keyboard it might actually be easier for him to use.
He mainly uses his computer for Craigslist, email and occasional websurfing. He currently has a old workstation I set up for him with ubuntu.
The main problem he has is getting the pictures off his camera and posting things to Craigslist. It may seem simple, but it is a multi step process and I'm usually not there to walk him through it.
Do you guys think the galaxy tab would be a good candidate or is there something better? It must have a decent camera with flash. Easy to read for far sightedness, good app support, and inexpensive. I'm thinking a 10" tablet would be too big to take pictures with and a phone would be too small. What is the newest android available on the tab? How is cyanogenmod support? Does it matter if it's a wifi version or GSM or cdma?
Sorry for the long post, thanks in advance.

Yes, but let's face it-if I were to choose a pad for someone who sucks with technology I would pick the iPad - less things you can mess up, easier to use, etc. Android is for people who (mostly) know what they're doing.
Sent from my SCH-I510 using xda premium
Since you are looking for something that is reasonably priced, (which the iPad and most higher-end Android tablets are not,) and smaller, a used Galaxy Tab would be a decent option. There are Craigslist apps in the market, although none of them are "official." Despite their unofficial nature, a few of them have 1,000,000+ downloads and 4.5 star ratings. If he only needs a device for checking email, browsing, taking pictures, and posting to Craigslist, the OG Galaxy Tab would probably be your best bet.
There is a bit of a learning curve for the technically-illiterate, but I'm sure he can adjust, and it would be a lot easier for him to remember the process on the Tab than it would be to remember how to take the picture, import it to his computer, and then go through the steps of posting.
In this case, I do speak from experience. My parents were dragged away from their dumbphones into the Android ecosystem, and after a surprisingly short period of adjustment, they have become devoted Android fans. For your purposes, my advice would be to go for it. I hope this info helps and good luck.
Pretty much not more to be said here.
Android is for people who are comfortable with computers and technology. If he's good with fiddling around to solve his problems, then it's a good tab. If he gets confused when his wifi isn't connecting to the home network, then don't get him a gtab.

Hey guys, im thinking of buying a nexus 7, and for the price it is the bargain of the century.
but is it really worth it? ive got a S3 and thats getting JB soon
is there anything coming out soon that will be roughly the same price but any better?
Thanks Jack
I'm somewhat in the same boat as you but instead of upsizing in screen size I'm downsizing from a 10" tablet which is also set to recieve JB soon.
I think the largest factor in deciding if the Nexus 7 is right for you is knowing what you mostly use your cellphone for. If you mostly only surf the web, read books/articles, and watch movies trying to kill time when outside then a tablet isn't really right for you as a cellphone will have way more mobility and access to 4G internet. However, if you plan an using the Nexus 7 while sitting down somewhere or at home on the coach then the Nexus 7 would be a much better fit for you than just the SG3 due to the larger screen size and higher resolution.
Personally I dislike how cellphones such as the SG3 keep getting larger but I understand some people (like my parents) don't want mutiple devices of varying sizes but instead want something that can be used to fill various roles.
From what I've seen most of the tablets available at this moment or in the near future seem to have similar specs or features as the Nexus 7. However I'd suggest you stick with the Nexus 7 because there is much more support for the device as well as accessories. For now 7" tablets are still seen as "budget devices" so manufactures continue to make the exterior out of plastic with similar internals as others in the $200-300 price range.
I own a Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 7 and I feel like they complement the other perfectly. The Galaxy Nexus is perfect for on the go and what not, but while I'm home the Nexus 7 is my go to device.

Fully worth it mate. You won't find anything better for the price. Google are selling it cheap to get people on the play store, not make profit from the device itself.
Also, it's a nexus device, and nothing has better support than a nexus device. I'm fully sick of buying devices which never see updates.

Kindle Fire 2 ought to be announced soonish.
for me the only main annoyance with the n7 is the lack of optional 3G, it would be perfect if it had that.
for the price and the form factor and the technical specifications, nothing can come near it, I find I use my phone less and less (I have a htc velocity that has a 4.3 inch screen) and I'm uninstalling more and more off my phone, I may even end up just grabbing a smaller phone next time round as I carry the nexus 7 everywhere in my back pocket.
Using tablet talk, drop box and splash top, this has been pretty good at letting me get around the home and have everything funneled through WiFi. Plays games well, has amazing support, is the best Asus tablet I've owned actually. Takes my phone out of my pocket, keeps from needing to be at my comp to check my work email or open secure files, makes me portable. I'm pretty amazed. And this is a vanilla device, so it will always be up to date.

So you would rather pay for a second 3g service plan rather than just tethering off your phone and only having to pay for just one...
When I am walking around away from Wi-Fi, I just turn on tethering, stick the phone in my pocket and forget about it. The 4g in my phone is almost as good as my network at the house. No extra fees...
I have to have my phone with me at all times anyway 24x7 On call. In on 4g right now.

Yes, I realize this is relatively old phone, but I like the fingerprint thing and webtop. However, after Ubuntu for phones gets to working order, I would like to install that (I realize there is no kernel for it yet but assuming we will have one.)
Is this a good phone? How much lag on a motoblur rom? And how much in a cynogenmod rom? Would you recommend this phone to me? Or should I go with a new phone?
Sent from my RM-820_nam_att_100 using Board Express
Despite the fact that our developers are our hope for this device, motorola locked the bootloader with an update (and there is no workaround). Therefore, I wouldn't buy a device with the official ROM hoping to use the new kernel (in development).
Besides that, the original motoblur is pretty annoying and heavy, motorola didn't (and never will) update the device to ICS and NVIDIA didn't publish open source drivers for the phone.
Please, don't buy this... It's a trap!
If you get a fantastic deal on a used working phone why not? New devices are nice and more up to date on OS but that's not everything. Who knows what the devs will figure out. The seem pretty determined to crack the kernel.
Do make sure its not boot locked tho. That would be bad.
Do not buy this phone. Display is poor. The fingerprint reader is a waste of time and you will never use webtop. You would be better off buying a tablet if like the idea of webtop.
I would get on old galaxy s2 if you want a decent phone.

It's certainly enormous. For me, one of the most attractive features of the Atrix is that it is relatively compact for a phone with a 4" screen so it is easily pocketable.
That said, if I didn't need to carry my phone in my pocket, I would certainly consider something like the Note 2. I'm not sure it is really a valid comparison, however as the Atrix and Note 2 aren't exactly in the same price bracket, are they?
I'd imagine you ought to be able to get an Atrix pretty cheaply these days.
Got both of them(GNote2 an Atrix)
Note is feeling more like everyday use phone/tablet. Its good, not perfect and it can do anything you need. But it feel soulless, just another boring gadget.
Atrix is more about WOW, superphone with many docks, fingerprint scanner, broken promises, good vs evil and the whole story behind.
If you need some working machine, go for GNote. But if you need something to use it with a smile, go for Atrix.
BTW month ago I sold my GNex, I preffered to keep Atrix as my backup phone.

Of course get note 2 over atrix 4g, on atrix 4g the finger print scanner doesnt work half the time, screen sucks and not very sensitive, and webtop isnt as great as you think. Also the nexus 4 is a great choice instead of galaxy nexus, And why get a note 2 with the HTC one and the Galaxy sIV(4) just around the corner?
Because I'm looking for a cheap phone(if I get a note 2 I'm buying a used one) so if I can find a nexus 4 )to run Ubuntu when its stable) cheap I'll get that
Sent from my RM-820_nam_att_100 using Board Express
I bought the Atrix 4G because I didn't want to waste money on a phone I didn't need and because it's dual core. With the ROMs that are out there, I think it'd be a good buy. It's best to stay on GB for now but there are working JB roms out there (but battery life isn't as good due to being beta). It's a pretty fast phone nonetheless considering when it came out.
So yeah I just bought one of these to use as a portable media player and I hope now I can root it after reading this! Still it's unlocked and was only £50 so hopefully it works out, if not back on eBay!

50 quid sounds a pretty good price if it is in good nick.
If you're thinking of using the Atrix HDMI output to play video on external displays, note that the Tegra 2 has limitations in playback of h264 High Profile video at 720p or above. If you have a search around, you ought to be able to find suitable encode settings for video.
Unfortunately, you'll not be able to get as good quality HD video playback as many other phones!
Pantech Burst is good value. It has ICS, and a1.5 dual core processor. I've gotten two on eBay for around 80.
Samsung Galaxy SII is a good choice too.
Thanks for the replies. Just planning on using it as a glorified Android mp3 player. Not running videos out to TV or anything just some video watching and listening music. The 16GB storage plus Micro SD support attracted me.
It was 50 quid because the screen is intermittently non responsive in places. Seems a common fault but hoping it's just something loose. Was also looking at Galaxy S phones for 16GB also but we'll see how this works out first.

To make a long story short, I'm trying Android for the first time after being a diehard Apple user... (I'm currently on the iPhone 5)
Anyways, I was looking at the following three phones:
Nexus 4
HTC One
Galaxy S4
I jumped the gun and ordered the Nexus 4 but then I realized that the 16 GB model I ordered didn't have any SD storage so I have to fit ALL my music and videos (video podcasts) into the small 16 GB space. I'm also losing LTE support but I can deal with that.
My Nexus 4 is coming tomorrow and I was told to refuse delivery to send it back and get a refund.
In the meantime I ordered the HTC One developer edition for the unlocked bootloader (seems important for rooting, flashing alternate ROMs), but now I read that alternate ROMs often lose hardware features like camera post-processing, image stabilization (?), etc.
Now I'm still undecided because I didn't realize that flashing custom ROMs would lose features like that...
I do really like the idea of stock Android (and the very latest updates) but the higher resolution, and more importantly bigger storage, of the HTC One is making me think I should go that route.
Can anybody give me any advice?
EDIT: I also forgot that the Nexus 4 has a much smaller screen size due to the LCD buttons taking up much of the screen realestate...
As far as your media goes do you use Google Play at all? You can at least have all of your music uploaded into the Google Play cloud and not worry about installing it on your phone. Just a thought.
Yes you are in quite a pickle. The problem is that there are too many different android devices out there which shine in their own way but that can be a good thing. Anyway personally I'd go with the galaxy s4-brilliant specs and an sd card slot, I was going with the nexus 4 but I am a hardcore gamer so that was out of the picture. Also I'm not fond of htc's . The galaxy s4 will have brilliant and lots of developers for roms, kernels ect and I would advise you to get it.

But if you can afford it I would suggest the HTC One. That phone is damn sexy

Any of those 3 phones are great. Based on what you want on the phone, I think S4 most suits your needs.

Nah I say the one is a better buy especially if he's coming from an iPhone.

May I suggest iPhone 5s?

Yes you are in quite a pickle. The problem is that there are too many different android devices out there which shine in their own way but that can be a good thing. Anyway personally I'd go with the galaxy s4-brilliant specs and an sd card slot, I was going with the nexus 4 but I am a hardcore gamer so that was out of the picture. Also I'm not fond of htc's . The galaxy s4 will have brilliant and lots of developers for roms, kernels ect and I would advise you to get it.

Being a fan of both iOS and Android platforms, both have compelling feature sets. That said, there are many exquisite handsets for Android lately. The Nexus 4 has been out for a while now and we should start seeing leaks for the Nexus 5. And my current personal favorite is the HTC One. My Nexus 4 tragically met it's demise on a tile floor at Subway earlier this week and rather than go from 4s to 5 or replace my Nexus 4 I'm going to give the HTC a try (only thing left to confirm is the level of NFC support... SE included or not for Google Wallet). I would see which handsets meets your needs then go for that one. Also FWIW, until Apple comes out with a bigger screen, not just taller, I'm not going to upgrade my iOS. The HTC device also seems a bit sturdier than the Nexus 4 with it's aluminum back. As for the samsung offerings... personally I don't like them. I had a Google Nexus and was completely unhappy with the AMOLED screen and cheap plastic chassis. Just my 2¢.
I would get the HTC one !

HTC One is nice, until you realize you can't even service the battery without destroying the phone.
Most people end up selling their phones before they need to replace the battery. Phone batteries nowadays last at least 4-5 years if not more.

I wager development on the N4 will be alive & well long after people have moved on from S4 or HTC One--just look at the GNex's lifespan of relevance. If you're looking for a solid, dev-friendly phone to last a while go with an N4.
And maybe a case, depending. Now if you're not a cheap-ass & feel adventurous to boot get the S4 as well when it comes out. Who says you have to choose
You wont loose lte just flash .33 radio or the other old ones.

If key lime pie was not coming in may, then i would have got the s4. But since key lime pie is coming in may, it means that nexus 4 will get it right away, while htc and samsung will wait at least six months.
I've used plenty of sense phones, HTC makes great hardware but stock android > sense.
Coming from iOS the N4 is an easy transition, only two things that are really different are widgets (you don't have to use these) and the app drawer so you will be able to pick it up just fine.
I bet you're going to hate the android OS since you only used iOS. Try it before you buy, but it seems you already made that mistake and you blindly bought a Nexus.
Hey guys does or will the new Nexus 7 (2013) be phone capable since it will have LTE this time? I have searched this thread and on line but came up with nothing out it has 4G LTE. Reason why is because I use my GTP 7 Plus 6200(3G) as my phone.
Thanks in advance Terry

Hey Terry,
I believe there are no stock phone capabilities with the N7. The LTE is just for data connectivity.
Correct me if I'm wrong,

You can use a VoIP app, there are even some that let you use your current number.
But I don't really think that is what you're asking.

Thanks for the reply! That actxatly waht I was looking for. Thanks But that sucks, I really like having only one device to carry around. And yes I really do use my GTP 7 Plus like crazy!
Everything people do with there phone I do it with my Tab. For those guys that think talking on a 7" device is crazy looking. LOL
I don't think you're crazy
I'm gonna try 'tablet talk' with the n7 and a bluetooth headset I got just today for $5. Phones are too small to be good for your eyes lol

Haha I have a Note 8.0 and being on the phone in public always brings attention!
There are two types of attention
Nexus 7 (2013) General > Nexus 7 Gen 2 "Phone Capability"?
If the device is being labeled as having a ''cellular support", does that mean it has a phone capability or just 3g/4g?
edit: A device has to have GSM to have phone capability.
I've thought about this as well... I would love it to be capable/practical as I only want to carry one device.
At the moment I think I'm just going to get the new 6.45" Xperia Z Ultra. I know its expensive but what the hell, I'm worth it
I really believe that if Google/Asus put phone capabilty on the Nexus 7, it would be a big hit.
I know I'd sell my Nexus 4 and buy it instantly, since I rarely use it as a phone. Maybe 2 or 3 times a day.

I'm half thinking they won't do it because they realise it will cannibalize phone sales. And google now has a vested interest in phones since they have acquired motorola.
I don't know maybe I'm off the mark? Is there a large enough portion of people who would use a 7" tablet as a phone to worry them? Phablet sales may indicate so.
I know everyone is complaining phones are getting to big but as a real productivity tool its the screen size that limits me. Give people choice I say. It will be interesting to see how well the Xperia Z ultra sells.
We need XDA experts to work on this - the Nexus 7 could be an EPIC phone!!!
Just use GrooVe IP + Google Voice.
or just wait a few years for the Nexus 7.... oh yea!

Cannibalise phone sales? Serious? Everyone's going to ditch their portable, pocketable phones for 7 inch ones?

It's the one reason i won't buy a 3g/4g enabled tablet. Unless it offers me the ability to make a call (i make maybe 2 calls a month) and send texts (a lot), then there is no way i'm going to pay upto £10 a month just for a bit of internet ontop of having a phone contract. But i want the N7, not a samsung note etc.

No not everyone, I'm just speculating as to possible reasons why they don't include phone functionality for the few cents extra it would cost. Any insight as to why?
I suspect carriers would be pissed with the idea regardless.
Come on XDA - lets put our thinking hats on!
We need 7" phones!

There'd probably be such little demand for a device like that.. Only people like you and me and xda'ers would be keen and we make up only a small, small minority
