[Q] Help with ROM development - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I want to start making ROMs for the NC, but I don't really know where to start. How would I make the ROM work with the Nook, and how would I then fix all the bugs, etc? If any of the Nookie devs could respond with where (or how) they learned to make ROMs, that would be great. I really want to start becoming part of the development community, and learning about how Android works.

You can check over my thread down in cyanogenMod on how to get started on building your own KANG ROM project for your nook color. I added lots of information in that thread and all of the tools you need to get started. I also go over on how to debug your builds somewhat, I need to update that thread.
Make sure you have tons of time and commitment before you get started, I also have a few reference books in that thread also you will need to read on how linux kernels work.
We are trying to keep a lid on wildcat KANG builders for the nook color at the moment with those wanting to publish KANG JB builds, as others posting KANG builds without further work in debugging those builds leads to sloppy builds for everyone, so when you are ready check with the top developers with the nook color up in IRC at #nookcolor at freenode.net. Lots of new developers lack the skills and knowledge to debug their builds, yet can get a build up and running on their device.
Anyway here is the link I started for new developers interested in building android builds for the nook color and other android devices. http://forum.cyanogenmod.org/topic/50994-follow-along-with-me-trying-to-learn-how-to-code/

anybody else???

How can i Port Htc Salsa Sense to Froyo? and cook Rom For Hero?

hello I m free nowaday so want to learn some porting and cooking Roms btw I m noways developer if any one guides me would surely appreciate it!!
and is it possible to port salsa sense on froyo?
Ok, let's learn porting and cooking roms.
1. check this tutorial.
2. post in the right section.
3. look here.
4. say thanks.
or, download salsasense by JieeHD which is a mature powerful stable rom already running on the hero and make modifications from there.
since, technically, you can't actually "build" android when many parts of the OS have been removed and replaced with precompiled executable code by HTC, as is the case with that rom.
but still, if you want to modify a rom, and give credit to the original author, for sense roms it is much easier to start with someone else's hard work than to do it all from scratch yourself.
but for learning, I admire your interest. Hopefully you can become a strong dev for the hero!

[Q] State of play for X5 roms:

Hi, just after some advice about huawei roms for the X5. The x5 section on XDA is a bit all over the place with information scattered everywhere unlike the u8150 which has no section of it's own, but has a great wiki.
Seems that development is pretty solid for GB roms for this phone as there are multiple roms which are very close to being perfect and also GB is being released for this phone on the 30th in theory ;-).
Main 2.3 roms seem to be MIUI, CM7 and Oxygen and a long awaited for Huawei approved one.
Main 2.2 roms seem to be B160, FLB and Void
MIUI:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1354680 -.32 kernel and 2 devs
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367448 - Genokolar dev, .35 kernel
Great if you like the android/ios mashup.
Can anyone tell me if there are any problems experienced with the 18/12/2011 .32 kernel release?
Has anyone tried Geno's .35 release? Seems more like a testing release from Geno.
CM7 - Only has one DEV that I can see, Genokolar
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068766 - .32 kernel and 11.11.28 final release
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311565 - .35 kernel and 11.11.22 release
Not quite sure what the deal is here, .32 kernel seems stable with most everything working except usb tether. .35 kernel seems a bit all over the place and I am not sure what the deal is. Anyone able to shed some light here? Also seems Geno is dropping support so hopefully other devs step up.
Oxygen: Seems active but has some of the biggest bugs that I can see:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1149150
http://forum.oxygen.im/
Seems to be really active but has no ability to mount internal SD card, no tethering, video seems a bit suspect. Are these problems still happening?
2.2 roms:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1059753 - B160 customised rom 2.2.2.
http://android.modaco.com/topic/342...rom-for-the-huawei-u8800-with-online-kitchen/ - Not sure what the deal is with online kitchen, but it is 2.2.2 and seems to have a problem with headphone audio.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1147103 - Void: eridanus, seems all working and uses franco kernel.
Guides, Modaco page seems a little outdated, but still useful:
http://android.modaco.com/topic/341011-ultimate-guide-to-the-huawei-u8800/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Huawei_U8800_IDEOS_X5 X5 wiki which could do with some updating.
Recoveries:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1343276 - 5.0.27 recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1130524&highlight=void 4.0.05 recovery by genokolar
Which one is the recovery to use?
I know it is a personal choice, but which rom is a good start? Seems CM7 is the way to go if I don't want miui interface and need ability to wifi tether and use both sd cards in the phone.
Thanks for any input
Paul
Also, we have a wiki page here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Huawei_U8800_IDEOS_X5
You dont need to be a dev to edit a wiki, anyone can do it, how about if we edit it to keep as a central repository for info and sticky it at the top of the general section.
I have been helping curate the u8150 one here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Huawei_U8150_IDEOS#Unofficial_ROMs_.26_Recovery
and it is very easy to do as well as making all info easy to find.
If you have some info to contribute, why not help make the wiki complete?
Thanks
Paul

[Q] Any Dev's/Testers/Themers etc (NEW ROM TEAM)

Hi All,
I've been working on a Nexus ROM and would really like to get a few team mates to help me really push the ROM and get it to a stage which is viable for public release.
I'm looking for a team as follows:
Devs:
Could do with a joint lead dev to work alongside me.
Perhaps a dev or two working on things such as Aroma/scripts/Build.prop etc.
Themer:
Only really need one themer
Perhaps a GFX designer?
Testers:
Need one LEAD tester, which will get the test ROM FIRST!!!!
Maybe a second tester to make sure?
Anybody interested in joining my team and creating another wonderful ROM?
Thanks all,
Wilks3y.

[q] newbie dev help

So I have very little knowledge on developing a ROM for android but I want to try and have fun
Apparently to make a ROM you need a kitchen but seeing some threads their are not kitchens... So is this done by editing sources codes and how what do you use to develop a ROM with the source code?
Big newb here but wanting to learn
