[q] newbie dev help - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have very little knowledge on developing a ROM for android but I want to try and have fun
Apparently to make a ROM you need a kitchen but seeing some threads their are not kitchens... So is this done by editing sources codes and how what do you use to develop a ROM with the source code?
Big newb here but wanting to learn

where do you learn how to build custom roms?

Hi I'm just wondering where to learn how to make custom roms?
I find it very interesting but guess I don't quite understand it just yet.
I have built cupcake and tried to run it in the emulator following the steps google gives on the source code page, but it never gets past "Android" with a flashing cursor and a black background on the emulator and i've never tried to flash it to the phone as im not brave enough being i really dont know what i'm doing. I would like to use the files in JF's build so i have root and what not, maybe poke around the code a little, see how things work. I wish someone would make a beginers tutorial for for this. I know its not easy and you need to know how to program. and programing shouldn't be part of the tutorial, but just how to get all the files maybe make a small change to one or two of them and then build it and see those changes at work would be nice.
Thanx for any help!
there is no beginners guide to programming the android OS, either you can look at the source and edit to your liking or you can't. for the most part the guys that have been building the ROMs have been working with programming for a long time and know what they are doing. i am working on it, but my java is old knowlege and i don't remember much. you will need to learn java in order to play with building your own ROM
I'm not so much talking about editing the source as just take the source and build it so i can run it in the emulator. I'm not that great with linux, and i did build it, but i think i did somthing wrong because it freezes at the android screen. I know im not going to just grab the code and start changing it with no experiance. I just want to mess around and see what i can learn.

Making builds! Devs please enter!

Can Someone make a tutorial about how to make an android build using sources, i've searched and hadn't found anything interesting!
a lot of people(including me!) want to participate in the port project but they don't know where to start!
i got some advanced skills on linux and i want to start dev builds especially after the end of the exams and the start of holidays
thanks

[Q] Help needed how do you start building android roms?

I have done a lot of work in building windows mobile roms. I now want to start building android roms as well, but am completly new to this.
I assume like windows rom you will need some sort of kitchen, a base rom etc. I do not know where to begin.
Can any body give me pointers. Eg were to download the compilers and were to get the base roms?
I have seen some sites out there to download the base roms but they seem to need a username and password to access the sites.
Any help would be appreciated. I have tried searching through the guides available but not really any futher on.

Your best bet would be to start here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=613
Thats the Chef Central Forum for Android based builds. But, if you are a beginner to Android, it'll take a lot of reading. Even more if you are new to Linux

How can i Port Htc Salsa Sense to Froyo? and cook Rom For Hero?

hello I m free nowaday so want to learn some porting and cooking Roms btw I m noways developer if any one guides me would surely appreciate it!!
and is it possible to port salsa sense on froyo?
Ok, let's learn porting and cooking roms.
1. check this tutorial.
2. post in the right section.
3. look here.
4. say thanks.
or, download salsasense by JieeHD which is a mature powerful stable rom already running on the hero and make modifications from there.
since, technically, you can't actually "build" android when many parts of the OS have been removed and replaced with precompiled executable code by HTC, as is the case with that rom.
but still, if you want to modify a rom, and give credit to the original author, for sense roms it is much easier to start with someone else's hard work than to do it all from scratch yourself.
but for learning, I admire your interest. Hopefully you can become a strong dev for the hero!

Ubuntu/Linux dist is required to build a project from a source code, and it requires a pro to build and debug a project/ROM frm source! To make a simple/normal custom, you may even use Kitchen(in Cygwin for Windows) or even in Linux!
For ur question, Ubuntu is better choice!
Ubuntu is not a must, but its easy because it have the most tools preinstalled for this.

if you are not building from source all you need is
apktool
java jdk
android kitchen
cygwin (if using windows)
notepad++
winrar
There are many guides - best you do some searching for example

Well theming a custom ROM takes a lot of time and for completing the work on time you obviously gonna need some niggas to help you in your work.Well if you have a good internet connection then you can sync up sources and compile ROMs like Carbon,Pac or AOKP Kitkat for this device since we're getting closer to a stable CM11.There are a lot of guides on how to sync a ROM source code on the computer.Search down the threads and start syncing.
