AT&T Video Calling via Native Dialer - Galaxy Note II General

Ever since the first deployment of UMTS video telephony has supposedly been an integrated feature of the UMTS (and subsequent revisions) standard. For those of you who don't know, UMTS is basically the first publicly deployed iteration of 3G mobile communications, and it's the internationally adopted family of tech standards which includes later revisions all the way up to the HSPA+ of today.
When I lived over in the UK for a few years, I distinctly remember being able to pick up phones which featured video calling right out of the box. This was over the then new 3 UK network, back in 2003! So, when Steve Jobs announced how new and revolutionary FaceTime for the iPhone was back in 2010, my reaction was "b!t(h please! There ain't nothin' 'new' or 'revolutionary' about that ****! I was making video calls 7 years ago, and I didn't need to be tethered to some damn wifi to do it neither! New and revolutionary... my @$$!"
Here're the questions:
Why do no AT&T phones include a native video calling function from the dialer?
Why, when I buy an imported phone, which DOES have the video call function available from the dialer, does it not work, even when calling someone else with the same functionality on their own phone?
Why, when they operate an expansive UMTS/HSPA network, do they apparently not support what is supposed to be an integrated feature of the UMTS standard?

Nay laddie!
Don't you know that Apple invented video calls when they introduced Facetime?

A Revisionist

You are correct, it does have everything to do with AT&T, so going to the AT&T forum will do me no good to help. The problem is, AT&T does not, and never has, liked the idea of carrying video-call traffic over their network. What I'm trying to do here (if it's even possible) is give AT&T the proverbial middle finger, and use video calling anyway.

Not the same thing... at all...

I was wondering about Native video calling support also. Calling customer service was a waste of an hour. So called tech support woman who was hacking violently into the phone the whole time literally had me go into settings and turn on airplane mode on the phone I was talking to her on. She called back a few minutes later wondering why we got disconnected. A few minutes after the phone call ended I had no data. I called back to find out what the problem was and they told me she put a note on my file that I requested data to be turned off, when all I asked was if there was a specific app that integrated into the native video calling.
any luck finding a way to use the integrated video calling button the stock dialer?

[Q] Is it possible to use data on the phone while on a voice call?

Long time AT&T customer probably switching to Sprint, been eyeing the Epic..
If I get a voice call, is it possible (if I'm using a BT headset or speakerphone) to fire up a web browser on it and use that while I'm in-call? To look things up, or whatever?
If it can't do that, are there any other Sprint phones that can (EVO, for example?)
Thanks!
if i remember right, you can use data and voice only when you are connected onto 4G and WIFI, but not 3G. i have not tested this out yet to confirm but i remember reading that somewhere if i read it right. i also came from att (iphone) and being able to use data (3G) and voice at the same time was a major plus. ill have to try it out though later on my epic.
Yes u can use data while on a call only if you are on WiFi or 4g. Tested and verified.

Well, drat. Thanks fellas. Not that I do that very often, but it does come in handy. I checked and EVO "suffers" from the same problem.
Again, thanks, that's handy to know.
Its a cdma limitation, not a device one. Both sprint and verizon have this issue.

Some might say it is a "limitation", however is it the reason why cdma networks do not suffer from dropped calls like gsm networks do.
For more information, you can check out this rather lengthy post about why cdma is better than gsm.
yeah, i experience the same thing. it's becoming pretty much a deal breaker for me, as often i am on the phone for an hour or more and am trying to look things up at the same time. no joy. plus the abysmal battery life has me glad that i am still in the 30 day window ?; i like the phone a lot otherwise. wish i could get it for ATT. i have never had problems with their service, and would love to be able to talk and surf at the same time.
On 3g only voice.
On 4g voice n data simultaneous

[Q] Video Calling in Dialer

Hi everyone,
Just got my Virgin Galaxy S2 in Canada. Unlocked and ready to go with Rogers. My friend also got the S2 and when we were playing around with it, there was a button called "Video Call" and he called me with it. Now just a question, does this go through the Video Call from the carrier (meaning we will get charged for it) or is it like Facetime where it uses data only?
We tried it for like 20 seconds and then thought that we might get charged so we hung up.
Do you guys know?
Im taking a pot shot and guessing its like facetime and you get charged data wise

I did the same thing with a friend on galaxy s2 (bell) unlocked to use on fido, i turned off wifi AND data, and it still worked.
I am totally lost on how it is working..
Haha yea.. so I wasn't sure how it works. Probably goes through our cell network. I do remember long time ago, Fido/Rogers had something about video calling for x amount of minutes. Not sure what it will show on my bill.
It's just regular video calling, which has been around for years (Facetime is just another "look at this wheel we've invented" Apple fallacy.) It goes through your carrier and is treated like a call, not data.
It charges, unfortunately even higher than normal audio call. At least it is the fact for my carrier.
I used it totally about a hour with my wife...
Denmark's Telmore, btw.
If you're interested in doing video calls, I find that Tango is the best app for it. Larger and smoother videos. Not too sure if it's using data or 3G though.
Do the carriers in Canada actually support video calling over their networks? We can't use video calling through dialer at all in the U.S. because AT&T killed the feature about two years ago.
It will be charged just like voice calls, may be rates will be higher, No Internet

3g video calling if integrated with dialer does not use data, so no data charges. But the charges may be more. In india the charges are same as nornal audio calls.

[Q] WIFI calling with play store version or just Tmobile version???

Hello all. I am really looking forward to the new Nexus 4 as is everyone else . The only question I have, and it's a biggie for me, will there be a wifi calling app for the play store version of the phone. I assume that there will be one for the Tmobile store bought version, but where I live I get little to no cell service. I use the wifi calling anytime I am at the house therefore I need it. I would like to buy the phone from the play store because my contract isn't up soon. If not is it possible that an apk could be made to just flash into the phone's software? Maybe I'm just rambling on here, but I am just happy to see a new Nexus phone. :good::good:

AFAIK wifi calling has not even been confirmed, although it would be strange for a tmo device to lack it. They cannot provide this through the app store due to the complexity and low level nature of it, but it can be flashed if tmo makes it available on their own devices.
I think there are two possibilities:
1 its likely to come on tmo carrier devices sold at subsidy or through tmo, and unlikely to come on play store devices.
2 It is possible that the Nexus 4 will not have wifi calling support at all.
Either way I wouldnt expect wifi calling out of the box with a play store device.
This is not something that can be modded. The galaxy nexus still has no wifi calling support.

True, but if they add it to the models sold via Tmo it might be easy to port into roms for the Play Store variety as well.

chat support told me yesterday that the one from the tmobile store would have wifi calling.
%Leonil C: Yes. It doesn't really matter if its sold through Google. Wi-Fi calling is a phone feature and its not really T-mobile network that you will use if you call through Wi-Fi. Don't worry I assure you that.
rob layton: yes, but the phone has to be able to do the wifi calling through the software. I don't want to use a third party app, I want the true tmobile wifi calling that people tell me works very well as the signal is not great in the house.
%Leonil C: I understand. Wow seems that you really know alot about our products. Google Nexus 4 by LG will be sold by T-mobile on November 14. Because of that, we will put our personal touches on the phone just like what we do in our current phone models. Because of that, just like the S III's and Galaxy Note II's, it will have the T-mobile branded Wi-fi calling application.
%Leonil C: You can check out the phones on its release date on November 14. You will see the specs and features online at www.t-mobile.com.
rob layton: oh okay, so it woudl have to be bought straight from tmobile and not from google then?
%Leonil C: Yes that's right.

We'll find out in two weeks, but I'd bet a lot of money that that person is wrong.
while not definitive, it looks like the TMO Rep was a little misleading. And here i thought this was going to be my next phone.
http://www.tmonews.com/2012/10/psa-sorry-everyone-no-wi-fi-calling-on-the-nexus-4/
well that probably ends it for me, I was thinking since the phone is so cheap, I could probably just pay a little more for unlimited minutes but then there is still the issue of getting reception in the house.
Thanks for all the replies everyone. I can only hope that it does have it. I realy enjoy being able to rely on my internet rather than mobile service. Where I live I can only get 1 or two bars of service, so you can imagine that without wifi calling I cant even order a pizza. Ironly of it is that I live on a road named Tower Rd. due to the fact there are several cell towers built on the top of a mountain, and yet I still get no service.
Sorry dude but more than likely he's right ... T-Mobile WiFi Calling its not just an app, it needs a combination of Kernel and Radio protocols that WOULD require T-Mobile to have to re-write some of the software in it (witch I think they should since they are probably gonna have higher prices on the device any way ) but it really seems that google made a push for untouched software all across the Nexus 4 line
Why not use a third party app for wifi calling I use it on my GNote10.1 and it works quite well?
I think s.b. on G+ said T-Mobile had contributed stuff for Wi-Fi calling to AOSP; but I never checked the validity of his statement.

Really ??? Where did you see that ? We could definitely use that as a start to build our own !
With a combination of csipsimple app, free sipgate.com account, and google voice, you can do free wifi calling both send and receive from any android, doesn't even need to be activated. I have an old and slow htc hero I keep around as a spare that even works decently for wifi calling. I'm not going to write a guide on how to do this, but plenty of others already have.

It is all basically software. Just take a look at the HTC HD2 with Android, a WinMo phone that has Android T-Mobile wifi calling thanks to XDA developers. Perhaps the libs/apks from other phones can just be copied over and it would work.

[Q] WIFI Calling

I have the Galaxy s5 and originally purchased one from T-Mobile (When I was leaving ATT). Unfortunately, there service did not work well at my house so I went back to ATT, 5 hours after cancelling with them. When I did have the TMobile version, I really liked the wifi calling. I was upset when I found that ATT disabled that feature as well as the download booster.
I just found how to enable to download booster using Nova Launcher. Is there a way to get the wifi calling working too? Thanks for everyone's help.
Also, this is my first Android phone. What are things that I should download, try out, modify etc.....I want to make sure I'm going to stick with this and not go back to Apple. I want to see what all the freedom there is that people tell me I was missing out on with Apple.
WiFi calling is a T-Mobile exclusive. Att does not have the feature yet and Sprint is only just working on it. It cannot be ported over unfortunately.

Sorry I can't give you the steps, but there is a really great way to do wifi calling.
You need google voice account, hangouts, and app called sipdroid.
Some searching around the net should get you the steps.
But I would use this when I travel overseas. You can call any landline or cell phone and no one got charged. The caller ID would be your google voice number. So i guess if I were to call an overseas number they might get charged.
But this set up worked flawlessly. I made calls from Indonesia, Singapore, London, Germany, Nicaragua, and El Salvador to all my family for free. This wasn't all in one trip and it kept working each time I set it up.

Why to not buy the AT&T phone for TMO

I've seen some threads abound for people asking if the AT&T version works on T-Mobile and while it does there are some things that you should know before making that plunge even though you might be able to save $50.
First the good. If you've already done this that's fine. All bands for operation on T-mobile are on the AT&T variant. So no issues there. Don't feel like me making this thread means your device won't work.
If you're weighing what you lose in this scenario:
- You'll need to buy an unlock code, or at least find one, to switch it over. While these codes are cheap it's still chipping away at that small discount you got to buy the AT&T version instead of the TMO one.
- VoLTE support. While it's not enabled yet, it will come shortly and AT&T phones won't have the right radio and framework to make this work on TMO.
- QI Charging - in case you've been living under a rock in these forums, the AT&T model utilizes the basically non-existant powermat charging method and they have disabled the ability to use a QI wireless charger. Supposedly this is at the hardware level so this isn't something that can be fixed with a patch or custom ROM if true.
- No WiFi calling. Self explanatory. AT&T doesn't have/use this technology.
- locked bootloader. Now this may change over time with the amazing devs that we have but should you accidentally relock it or get a replacement phone because your old one got lost/broken you may have a newer bootloader than the one that could be bypassed previously. Better to just not deal with it.
Now for those looking to go the other way (TMO device on AT&T) that's fine. Just know that the tmo version is missing the 850mhz LTE band. Not that big a deal though as they don't really use that band much but it is a difference.
If anyone can think of anything else I missed feel free to chime in. Or if anyone has any general thoughts.

According to T-mo it's 20 cents/min to call international through WiFi. makes sense since the call has to be routed to cellular on the other side. I guess an exception would be if the recipient also has WiFi calling.
