[Q] Video Calling in Dialer - Galaxy S II General

Hi everyone,
Just got my Virgin Galaxy S2 in Canada. Unlocked and ready to go with Rogers. My friend also got the S2 and when we were playing around with it, there was a button called "Video Call" and he called me with it. Now just a question, does this go through the Video Call from the carrier (meaning we will get charged for it) or is it like Facetime where it uses data only?
We tried it for like 20 seconds and then thought that we might get charged so we hung up.
Do you guys know?

Im taking a pot shot and guessing its like facetime and you get charged data wise

I did the same thing with a friend on galaxy s2 (bell) unlocked to use on fido, i turned off wifi AND data, and it still worked.
I am totally lost on how it is working..

Haha yea.. so I wasn't sure how it works. Probably goes through our cell network. I do remember long time ago, Fido/Rogers had something about video calling for x amount of minutes. Not sure what it will show on my bill.

It's just regular video calling, which has been around for years (Facetime is just another "look at this wheel we've invented" Apple fallacy.) It goes through your carrier and is treated like a call, not data.

It charges, unfortunately even higher than normal audio call. At least it is the fact for my carrier.
I used it totally about a hour with my wife...
Denmark's Telmore, btw.

If you're interested in doing video calls, I find that Tango is the best app for it. Larger and smoother videos. Not too sure if it's using data or 3G though.

Do the carriers in Canada actually support video calling over their networks? We can't use video calling through dialer at all in the U.S. because AT&T killed the feature about two years ago.

It will be charged just like voice calls, may be rates will be higher, No Internet

3G calling...
3g video calling if integrated with dialer does not use data, so no data charges. But the charges may be more. In india the charges are same as nornal audio calls.

How does the video calling on the Galaxy S phones work? I mean, for example, who exactly can I video call? Is it restricted to other galaxy S phones, or does it operate off of a certain protocol across a line of devices? If there is a certain protocol, what is it called, who/what entity designed it, and what devices does it apply to? Whether that be a certain line of phones, or all devices that are GSM, or something like that, I don't know.
For reference My device is a Galaxy I-9000m on Bell mobility in Canada, Though I doubt that would affect much.
any body else with a phone capable of video calling will work (HTC/Nokia/Samsung and very few LG models)
when you call press the green button to the right side of the screen
instead of the left side
then it will enable 3G / H for video calling

Galaxy S video calling works over 3G using UMTS, so if the phone and network you're calling supports UMTS then you should be able to call them using video

Ok, So basically video calling is in the specifications for UMTS. That makes sense, Just the answer I was looking for, thanks.
Does the Video Call cost more money than the Calls?
Video calling will cost more than voice calls yes.
The cost is dependant on your network provider so check and see how much your network charges.
Ofcourse it may not be that big a deal either depending on what sort of phone plan you're on.
I know that for bell you have to pay 5$ a month for the video call feature.

So i've checked on the facebook page of the bell video call feature and for the facebook to phone video calls it doesnt use data and neither airtime from your plan, but i still don't know for phone to phone video call

So even with a data plan, you still need to pay $5 to enable video calling? That's silly. I'm with bell too.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
It could be worse, the U.S. carriers will charge $20-$30/mth for things like tethering (on top of the data used that you already pay for) so I wouldn't be surprised if they charged special for video calls. I'm going to try this on a SIP call but it sounds like the video function is limited to 3G but is worth a try. And it might not be compatible with the SIP video I've had for years.
Bell is just a rip off
if you have a unlimited data plan or 6GB data plan, you can make as many video call as you want
the $5 charge extra is just an extra $5 for them, you are still using your $45 data plan, not like you get any extra data with the $5 extra you pay them.
has anyone tried Fring? I understand you can do voicechat using fring and not pay the $5 a month. If this is the case it may allow for cross platform too, Androd ->iphone, as much as such a intermingling makes me cringe...ew.
doublepost
you don't need to pay the $5 if you already have a data plan
yes fring works
fring is a voice over ip + video
which means you still needs a data plan
which also means having a data plan already voids the need to pay the $5 because the video call uses 3G / H data anyways
which means Bell is cheating people of an extra $5 that is not necessary

i wouldn't say that bell is cheating people just for an extra $5. Since that $5 make the video call unlimited, so it doesnt use a single bit of our precious data plan. For someone like me with a 500mb data plan, it's pretty fun.
i have trouble with fring...........the audio is always very very poor. i've even tried it with both phones on a wifi connection to see if it would help, but it's the same..........video is ok though.
Fring doesn't work so well. I tried it and the camera that uses it is the normal camera on the back of the phone, so you cannot see your phone and be seen. Also, the voice doesn't work, I can ear the other person but he/she cannot listen me.besides that it messed up my volumes.i had to soft reset the phone.that I tried with jm5, don't know if its different with other roms.

The 5$ charge is to do video calls using the callers phone number. Its a cross phone GSM stabdard thing and is pretty different than fring; though you are right that it does use your data.

Wifi Calling uses plan minutes?

So I installed one of the two 2.2 builds out, and Wifi Calling works. It says that is uses the plan minutes. Is this correct? If so, what good is wifi calling?

This is how the uma wifi calling on my blackberry worked. I don't see the problem with it. You're still paying for a minute plan, and someone's paying for the internet you're using to make calls. There's rarely a time where I'm in an area that can get high speed internet service but not cell service. I do see the usefulness though, but it's not quite as cool of a feature when it uses your minutes.
lol. I also thought that wifi calling won't be using any of your minutes.

Personally I love it and was really hoping it would come to the Vibrant. The reception at my house is spotty, so this will help immensely. I'm glad that it's a free add on, and they're minutes I would have been using anyway so no big deal.

If you have a T-mobile USA plan and you are in Europe connected via Wifi, are your plan minutes counted as if you are in the USA or are you charged international minutes?

Im excited about the feature cause I have no cell signal at work (at all)
Will it work for ATT users though?
T-Mobile used to give you the option of paying an extra $9.99 per month for unlimited Wi-fi calling. They took that away so wifi (or UMA) calling uses your minutes. It is still helpful to me for overseas or certain areas that have spotty T-mobile coverage. I travel a lot and it comes up. Which is one reason I've held onto my old blackberry for when I travel. Now that the Vibrant is getting this feature I can finally ditch that thing.
maybe I am blessed But
i use and pay for a no contract unlimited plan, Since then my recurring costs are a constant 75 month. That really is not that much, unless you are really really broke. I use this phone for EVERYTHING and 75 month. I do like the wifi hookup I have used my phone in reverse to call (call on my computer using tethering) and that works very well. But I just did it to make sure i could, BTW I called out of the country........ and still 75 month

Do you have to have it enabled during? Like If I'm at work and I have bad cell reception, should I just turn it on? I guess I'm asking is there some automatic way to switch back and forth?
[Edit]
Looks like if you leave it on, under connection prefs you choose "Cellular Preferred" which calls will route through wifi if there is no cell service...
How would this work out in another country? If I travel to say Europe or Australia and have a WiFi connection can I call from my US number to other US numbers? Can I receive calls to my US number?

Yes. Basically wifi essentially becomes an US T-Mobile tower.
Wi-Fi calling/UMA is one of those features that make or break a phone for me. I have ZERO T-Mobile service at home. My current main phone (BB8700) has UMA so I get perfect reception in my house, top floor or basement.

I am LOVING the wifi calling!

That OTA update came just in the nick of time. I pushed it myself after I read about how to do it and still hadn't received the update. I left for Manila on Friday the 12th and have been loving the wifi calling here!! It has been a life saver in terms of paying for international calling. There is zero lag and the call sounds just as good as if I were on the network in the states. I can't really imagine a use for it while in the country since it still takes minutes, but I guess if you are in an area without TMobile but yet still has a wifi connection with a fast enough speed to carry the call, then it could be useful. I just don't know where that place is... All I can tell you is that it has been working amazingly well in the Philippians and I have been able to make and receive calls without interruption all week. My colleagues who have needed to pack an extra phone with international calling abilities have been absolutely green with envy as I'm still able to do business easily in the office without needing to be on a landline or paying extra to use my cell phone in the hotel. What a great innovation!!! Even texting has worked just as if I were still in the states. Everybody I call and text have had a hard time remembering that I'm out of the country since it is still not totally normal to be receiving calls and texts from the same US number even though I'm abroad.
Anyway, I thought I'd share. I tried it while I was in the states, but didn't know if the clarity or quality of the call was influenced by being near the TMobile network anyway. I can tell you for sure that it is a great thing with no downside. You do need more than just a wifi signal though. If the signal isn't strong enough then the phone won't register to the TMobile network and it won't work. Oddly enough, when it says the signal isn't strong enough to make calls, they still come in just fine. Maybe just a couple bugs to work out, but this has definitely made me glad I went with TMobile and not Sprint when I was shopping for a new Android.
Are you sure you're not still paying for international calling? I thought T-Mo was going to charge you.
As for "getting an international phone", the G2 probably could have been unlocked (barring S-OFF issues) to work with the GSM there just fine.
I just took my G1 to Australia after getting the unlock code from T-Mo, and it worked great there, 3G with an Australian SIM.

I remember someone on this forum confirming that if you use Wi-Fi calling, your phone is treated as though it's roaming in the states, which makes it extremely useful for those who commute internationally, like the OP.

Yeah, unless you just don't get a good signal in your house, there isn't much point to the wifi calling since it still uses your plan minutes. From here it works just like I'm in my office at home. I can call and text local numbers without having to dial any other weird country codes or anything. And people at home don't even need to know I'm out of the country since they just call my number and my phone rings just like normal.
Typically I have just used skype to call for free computer to computer since using it to call a phone number costs money. But now I can use the wifi and that is so much better! However, my hotel doesn't allow the phone to register with Tmobile, so some servers are going to put the kabosh on using this type of thing. I'm just wondering if it would work from the plane when I'm flying domestically and have the wifi available to me... FCC regulations prohibit using a phone during flight even if you are connected to wifi, so it doesn't really matter I guess.

The texting still counts as texting and not as a data charge. So it basically just uses whatever you already have on your plan. If you are out of text messages or minutes, then you will get charged for going over just like usual. I've got an unlimited plan for all that, so it isn't something I really keep track of.

I'm sure it could have been, but that is why I'm glad the wifi calling update came when it did. It saved me the trouble of needing to do it. Anytime I've been away from the office where I haven't had a wifi signal to attach to has been times when I don't really want to talk on the phone anyway. Especially here... I really don't want people seeing me with a G2 in my hand when it is a pretty lusted after phone here. Everything is uber cheap here, but I was at a less than legitimate item mall yesterday and they had a G2 in the same case as an iPad. I can get a 32GB ipad for less than a G2 here.

Yes, it CAN double as a phone!!!! (Quick Look)

I would say probably not. I have discussed this at length over in the GNote forum.
Long story short, even if the chipset does have a 1700AWS feature, enabled by some modified modem.bin or whatever, the device itself is very unlikely to have the antenna necessary for picking up that frequency. So basically, you'll either get very poor 3G signal, or none at all.
For Americans, as much as it sucks, my suggestion when using international devices is this:
Listen carefully. Are you listening? Good!
AVOID CARRIERS WHICH USE PROPRIETARY FREQUENCIES AND/OR TECHNOLOGIES
So that rules out T-Mobile, or any MVNO that uses T-Mobile (like SIMple Mobile), and that rules out EVERY CDMA carrier.
So yeah, if you're importing international devices, you're basically left with only one option: AT&T (or any AT&T MVNO). And people think it isn't a monopoly? HA!!!
I'm not listening.

Couldn't have been easier..
I finally put my AT&T sim card in my tab yesterday..
Now I got it from Negri on the 6th & set up my wifi..
Set up my email.. all is cool..
Went & did an OTA update... all cool.. no probs...
Then I stuffed in the sim card..
Immediately after re-booting... I made and received phone calls..!!!
I didn't have to do any settings at all..
So I tried sending myself a txt message... sent and received within a few seconds..
I didn't have to do any APN settings at all like I had to do in my GNote..
Then sent and received mms too!! success..
Web pages loaded fast.. although I cant find any icons that say 3g or H or H+...
Only super tiny green arrows going up and down near the clock on bottom right..
My contacts from my sim card were there too..
AGAIN.. I DID NOT have to do any APN settings..Somehow it knew and did it all for me... wap. cingular...etc.....
Super success!!!

Phenomenal battery. Easy get through a full day with room to spare, even with screen at 100%. Using as primary phone as well. You can talk on the thing for over 24 hours straight, and still not run down the battery all the way. No joke!
Well it does say 49hrs of talk time in 2G mode and 27hrs in 3G so the battery life is gonna be phenomenal when it comes to taking calls.

And that right there is precisely the reason I bought an HM5000!

AT&T Video Calling via Native Dialer

Ever since the first deployment of UMTS video telephony has supposedly been an integrated feature of the UMTS (and subsequent revisions) standard. For those of you who don't know, UMTS is basically the first publicly deployed iteration of 3G mobile communications, and it's the internationally adopted family of tech standards which includes later revisions all the way up to the HSPA+ of today.
When I lived over in the UK for a few years, I distinctly remember being able to pick up phones which featured video calling right out of the box. This was over the then new 3 UK network, back in 2003! So, when Steve Jobs announced how new and revolutionary FaceTime for the iPhone was back in 2010, my reaction was "b!t(h please! There ain't nothin' 'new' or 'revolutionary' about that ****! I was making video calls 7 years ago, and I didn't need to be tethered to some damn wifi to do it neither! New and revolutionary... my @$$!"
Here're the questions:
Why do no AT&T phones include a native video calling function from the dialer?
Why, when I buy an imported phone, which DOES have the video call function available from the dialer, does it not work, even when calling someone else with the same functionality on their own phone?
Why, when they operate an expansive UMTS/HSPA network, do they apparently not support what is supposed to be an integrated feature of the UMTS standard?
Nay laddie!
Don't you know that Apple invented video calls when they introduced Facetime?
Regards,
A Revisionist

You are correct, it does have everything to do with AT&T, so going to the AT&T forum will do me no good to help. The problem is, AT&T does not, and never has, liked the idea of carrying video-call traffic over their network. What I'm trying to do here (if it's even possible) is give AT&T the proverbial middle finger, and use video calling anyway.

I was wondering about Native video calling support also. Calling customer service was a waste of an hour. So called tech support woman who was hacking violently into the phone the whole time literally had me go into settings and turn on airplane mode on the phone I was talking to her on. She called back a few minutes later wondering why we got disconnected. A few minutes after the phone call ended I had no data. I called back to find out what the problem was and they told me she put a note on my file that I requested data to be turned off, when all I asked was if there was a specific app that integrated into the native video calling.
any luck finding a way to use the integrated video calling button the stock dialer?
