[Q] external storage for games ? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since the Nexus 7's internal storage is not good for big games (GTA, NFS, Batman etc.) , I would like to move data of these games to a USB stick which I use with SitckMount.
Is this possible ? IS there an app to move data to USB storage , or should I move it myself ?
What should I do if I move manually to run it from there ?
Thanks.

I've had to move most of the larger game data files to an external thumb drive. I had bought a load of games during the last Play Store deals and there's no chance of fitting them all on the N7. Because I usually only play one or two games at a time, I just move the data back and forth as needed. It's a pain in the arse but it works.

Nexus 7 storage expansion for games

Hi,I myself own an 8gb Nexus 7.But I have come to realise that there is only 5.9GB of usable storage. That is not enough for me since I like to play those high-end games with good graphics like Nova 3,but they take up a lot of space. I was wondering if there was any way to work around this?
Yes I do know that you can use USB OTG. But is there a way to make the system "believe" that it is the actual storage so that I can install the gigantic game data into the USB storage? For example there is GL to SD ,which is an app that you can move the game data to the sd card instead of the internal storage. So I think it should not be a problem for the devs to come up?Please help!!

Moving Games to Ext SD

My daughter installed all her games on the internal storage, now can't install additional games to it. I put in a 32 gb Micro SD but don't know how to move the games to the external storage, i found different move app 2 external apps but none of them work. Does anyone know how to move apps or I can install new games directly to the external SD ?

I've tried 4 apps so far on my tab 2. App2sd, Link2SD, GL to SD Directory Bind
the 1st 2 just did not work. GL to sd works but its limited (im using the free version). I have a lot of games, i do not have a count yet but at least 15. when im in GL to sd it only shows about 10 of them.... my number maybe off but nonetheless i cant move all my apps
i just recently (literally like 5 min ago) was able to get Directory Bind to work. This video helped a lot. Except he did not point out that when you start the app, in the bottom right hand corner the button needs to be on (minuscule but made the difference).
I hope this helps.

Give FolderMount a try.

Nvidia Shield updated to allow game saves to external sd card!!

I just got an update notification from my Nvidia Shield, the update contains the following:
1) Ability to move select apps and game programs (apk files) from internal memory to the micro sd card!!
2) improved Miracast streaming
improved PC streaming stability, gamepad detection and wifi performance!
3) Support for Tegra developer tools
Downloading the update now, good thing that I have a 64 gig card, now it's time to put it to good use!!
Great job Nvidia!
Update** Ok guys, the official news from NVidia about the ability to move complete game data over to the micro SD cards is shown below. Looks like they are working on it:

I don't see how some random Chinese tablet manufacturer can figure this out, but nvidia can't.
Nvidia Mod Reply: Its not that we cant, its that it requires some new code to be written in order to support it. Which we are working on for a future update.
Glad its getting good support i just got mine delivered here in the uk today.
Nice. Updating mine now.
Moving of games didn't work for me. It barely decreased the file size on the Shield. I looked at the SD after, and while there are a couple files there, they aren't the main game files. So the 2+GB games I have, are still on the Shield instead of the SD.
-Edit-
According to NVIDIA "Only APK files get moved." As most games have download after the fact, this doesn't quite help much.

Yes I just saw that as well. Gave me 300mb back. Not really useful just moving the apk.
can we update with root and unlocked bootloader ? also folder mount is doing a great job moving apps to the sd card so that's not a big deal
Nvidia deserves a round of applause for this one!

Yes. You will have to reroot though. The bootloader will remain unlocked.
DAMN YOU @MRCANNADY! haha
I was JUST ABOUT to start a thread... But I see that there are two new threads about this. (I think yours was the first)
I did make a video on the update too!

Just use Foldermount then you'll have plenty of space.
Arf, still audio latency....

What game did you move because I dont think it can completely move whole the game data into sdcard. I try for mc4 that have 1.9gb but shield only move 400mb.

It just moves the apk not the game data.. It is nice that they try but the apk is not the data hog.
I can not reroot. Need help. My PC don't recognize it. I installed the drivers already
yeah, I just noticed that it's only moving certain games/files...hence the quick transfer speeds
I think this is an android issue though, however, Nvidia stated on their official Shield forum that they are working on a a work-around..fingers crossed
CAN anyone help me??
I uninstalled and reinstalled Bard's Tale. This time it asked me where to put the files when the large download started. I chose my external card and it put all the 3.8GB of data there. I am going to try to uninstall Vice City next and do the same and see if it lets me put all on the external sd card....
Don't forget to click that Thanks button if I helped in any way.
I recall a poster saying you could move data as well. Poster did not know what they were talking about?
This makes more sense. The irony is it only helps with older games that had bigger apk files and no data folder. The trend now of course is huge data folders and small apk files. Apps2sd is a semi hollow option as a result.

Foldermount issues

Has anyone else had issues using Foldermount?
I've got a rooted Mojo and I'm trying to save space by moving data to an attached USB flash drive.
The game I tried is Virtua Tennis. I can move the obb data to the external drive (approx 380mb), the files pair and I get the green drawing pin, so I think I'm good to go.However when I try to start the game I get a message saying I need to download 400mb.I dont know what I'm doing wrong.
Does anyone know of a better app than Foldermount, or are there games or apps that cannot be moved?
Loving the Mojo apart from this pain in the arse.
After moving the data and the pin goes green reboot mojo. Them play the game. Easier way to reboot since your rooted is download quick reboot from the play store

Great app, and I second the notion: Reboot the MOJO and your app should work. I have very little on my MOJO anymore...everything is pinned through FolderMount.

This is strange,
I move the files, click the pin to go green then reboot.
After reboot, if I try the game immediately it runs , however after a few moments delay I get a message on the screen that folder mount has kicked in and mounted the pairs with no fail, and from that point it won't work.
When I try to select the game I get the error message that data needs to be downloaded.
I tried it with GTA 3, which involves moving approximately 1.2gb of data to the external drive. When I try to play the game it automatically starts to download all the data from the net again.
I Just don't get it.
I'm using the free version of folder mount, is this wrong?
I've every intention of purchasing the premium version providing it works, but at the moment I can't work out where I'm going wrong.
Thanks for the heads up on the reboot app by the way, very handy
As for moving games to the external drive, and creating the perfect scenario of mega app storage, I'm at a bit of a loss

The path to the drive is /mnt/usbdrive.
I don't believe it will show up however unless it's fat32. ( I may be wrong )
Don't launch the game until you see that folder mount message. Then launch it.

Yea I noticed that. I turned on my MOJO and forgot to wait for the stupid foldermount message to show up, and then all my data was gone.

[Q] newb here cofused about my storage

I installed a game on my Verizon S5 (xcom enemy unknown.) Since its such a big game, I wanted to move it and run it from my SD card. But my phone will only move about 60mb of the 3.72gb of game data. How can I move all of it over to the SDcard? I only have 10.6gb of internal space available for applications and games... surely this cannot be right.
pictures are attached below.
I'm afraid that's as good as it gets without a custom ROM.

You may be able to do it with an On The Go (OTG) adapter and an external USB drive (thumb drive). I have tried using an OTG and thumb drive and it worked like a charm, but I wasn't playing games.
