Colour contrast ratio ? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone...
I've 3 phones...
Xperia arc S
HTC one X
Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Now when i compare any 1080p movie from you tube at full HQ n full brightness of the respective phones ... this is what i noticed...
HTC one S has the best colour combinations contrast ratio n colours..... second cones Sony xperia arc S ... n lastly came the Samsung Galaxy nexus....
The display on GN was quite not satisfying.. I dont know why.. but there wasn't good colour contrast in it.... the colours weren't rich as the other two...
DO YOU THINK THIS WILL BE THE SAME CASE IN THIS NEXUS 4 ?
Please discuss this or lemme know coz yes.. I'm just one another person thinking to buy Nexus 4..

I was just about to post a similar thread. GNex had the PenTile arrangement of pixels, and a SuperAMOLED Display (which had defects and all). But the Nexus 4 has a totally different display technology. I hope someone will be able to explain the difference (as I don't exactly know the difference myself).

Look at the Anandtech review (scroll 3/4th of the way down). The Nexus 4 is looking to have the highest contrast display they've ever tested, even higher than the One X.

OP didn't day anything about his gs2 he is just sharing the information on a open forum. You shouldn't tell him what to do! I'm sure he is old enough to make his own choices.
and a lambo is faster than a golf...
xperia x has a different resolution so it has a bigger pixel density therefore the images looks better.
But, because there is a but, SGSII has better a better display, better blacks, better overall contrast ratio because of the super amoled plus display.
Next time gsmarena should try to compare comparable phones.
The S2 doesn't have a 720p resolution. When SAMOLED HD+ is released, then that'll be a fair comparison (ish)
Compare last years device to one barely released this year. Newer device has slightly better display than Last Year's device. Massive Woop!!! I AM TEH SHOCKED!!

Yes. and he is old enough to not aware that sgs2 is 1 years old "enough" for this comparison.

The Screen Resolution of Tablets

With the exception of the iPad (2048*1536) and the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity (1920*1200) most tablets including the 7.7 have a screen resolution of (1200*800).
The same screen resolution (1200*800) is available on the galaxy Note with a 5.3 inch screen. So a 7 inch screen such as the 7.7 would need a resolution of (1750*1160) to equal the Note. and a 10.1 screen would need a resolution of (2286*1524).
When I decide to buy a 7 inch tablet then I would want the screen resolution to be at least as good as the Note. How long do you think it will be before the next 7.7 has improved screen resolution to match the Note?
The Note is actually 1280x720,a small difference true. Edit: shouldn't trust my friend even though he owns a note... It is 800
But the bigger difference is that the Notes screen is Pentile and the 7.7 is not. Using Pentile to get higher pixel density just feels like cheating to me. Higher pixel density is supposed to make things more crisp, but a Pentile matrix does the opposite.
And the other two you mentioned aren't amoled, so they can't really be compared either.
I cannot give you a technical answer but I own both the note and the 7.7. The resolution on the tab is just superior. Put the two next to each other in a shop and you will see the difference instantly.

Hi Gaugerer, 7.7 actually has resolutions of 1280x800 instead of 1200x800.
Also, I agree with kishd. Put a Note and 7.7 side by side you can see clearly that the pixels in 7.7 are arranged in perfect grid, while the pixels in Note are arranged in pentile matrix, as in SIII.

The Note is not 1280x720. It's 1280x800; just like the Tab 7.7. I have both.

Thanks for your replies and for correcting my Note screen resolution. It seems that most of you are happy with current resolutions on Android tablets, but I wish we had iPad3 dpi for it would help with my charting and multiple windows.
Of course the more the better XD
We are hardly some fanboys who would defend its short-coming
Having said that, resolution is not everything. You would like to look at contrast and refresh rate, as well as how pixels are arranged. The overall watching experience depends on these as well.
But if you don't want to digest too much technical detail, just go to shop and try it out on your own

Please tell me N-4 screen as good as One X ?

I sure hope the screen technology on the new LG Nexus 4 is as good as, or close to that of the HTC One X screen ?
I have the Galaxy Nexus, and international One X, running CM10 Nightly's on both. There is absolutely no question whatsoever, that the One X has by far the superior screen technology, over Samsung's 720p pentile AMOLED screen on the Galaxy Nexus. The One X is easier to see outside in daylight, the image is more crsip / sharp on the One X, and reading texts in e-mails and news webpages is also far clearer and more detailed on the One X. Only thing the Samsung screen has on it, is the deep blacks and cartoon colors, that's it.
I know the Nexus 4 uses IPS technology, similar to that of HTC's One X. I am not even asking for the Nexus 4 to be better than the One X's screen, I will be a happy camper as long at it is at least the same quality and clear image.
Whats the verdict ?
I read somewhere that they are very close in quality. Hard to choose which is best, so I wouldn't worry!
some say yes
i think probably not, but close
They're basically even. I wager some reviews will say its better, but overall they'll be a draw.
I'd say it's better. IPS is amazing.

Looks like you can afford it, buy it and put it side by side then let us know. I would go to a Sprint or ATT store, they have both the One X and LG Optimus G.
Screen
They should be very similar, the only difference I could see from the Specs sheet is that the Nexus 4 has a resolution of 1280x768 and 320dpi vs the One X's 1280x720 and 312 dpi.
its better afaik...
768x1280 vs 720x1280
True HD IPS plus vs Super IPS2
plus the contrast is greater
OT:
If I'm not mistaken, the SLCD2 screens in the ONE X are made by Samsung, and now they even makw SLDC3 1080p screen like showcased in the HTC J Butterfly.
I don't understand why Samsung keeps using their inferior (Screenburn, low Brighness, inaccurate colors.., in most cases higher power usage) Amoled screens
in their top Smartphones.
The Galaxy Note 2 with an 5.5" 1080p SLCD3 would have been amazing.

You are COMPLETELY mistaken - Samsung don't make the one x screens at all.
Sharp & acer make the screens available on the ONEX (with Sony making a few that seem to be U.S AT&T version only)
Sharp is the warm yellow variant
Acer is the cool blue variant
Most say sharp is the better version.

Panel IDs for HTC ONE X
Sharp 0x294000f
Acer 0x4940014
Sony 0x1810
Sony tends to be US AT&T only for most, international devices are either acer or sharp.
So, you can forget Samsung making these screens.

S4 vs note 2

can anyone tell me which phone is best for gaming s4 or note 2?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda app-developers app
both are good..
Since 4 is obviously a bigger number than 2, I would test them both yourself and then decide which you like best.
Personally I will go for note2..
There isn't any game that lags in note2
Battery-3100mah, undoubtedly above good
processor-very good(quad core)
Ram-2gb (same as s4)
Why not s4? Here's why-
Expensive than note2
Poor battery compared to note2
Phone heats up very quickly on hard gaming(it becomes so hot u can't even touch it)
Small screen(depends on u)
Not actual octa core (2Xquad core)
Rest is ur decision..I investigated a lot before choosing among both and then bought note2
S4 is more powerful in benchmark results so i guess it will be good for gaming
5 inch screen is not too small lol and also screen resolution of S4 is 1020 while its 720 in note 2
S4 is easy to hold with one hand for one hand operation i.e typing/texting
the only advantage of note is bigger battery and extra 0.5 inch screen

S4 cause it has better CPU and more important a faaar better gpu(the essential part for gaming) that support also OpenGL 3.0 +better display.
Note 2 also has good points (bigger screen and better battery) but overall the s4 is better for games.
Sent from my iPhone 5 using Tapatalk
Well the S4 has more than twice as many pixels to shuffle around so it really needs the extra power. While the S4 has a sharper display (441ppi vs 265ppi) the Note2 is slightly bigger (5,5" vs 5.0"). If you have no need for the S-Pen I'd say, go with the S4... just make sure to keep a spare battery available.
Anyway I'd suggest you to wait for the s4 advanced, that will have a massively better gpu and a 20/25% better CPU(s800) or if you can get the the s4 lte-a (same as the s4 advanced but already on the market, HK and Korea only) that it is also 32gb ver.
IMO the best thing to do is wait a month to buy the s800 devices that will come out(Xperia z1,lg g2, note 3, nexus "5", and the htc one max)
Sent from my iPhone 5 using Tapatalk
The Note 2 has a bigger screen but less pixels, s4 a small screen with more pixels. So the video peformance is not very different because the s4 needs more power to manage those extra pixels. And of course personal preference.
simply wait for Note 3 :good:
The battery on the Note 2 will easily last more than a full day even if you use your phone a lot. When I had the s4 it struggled to get to the end of the day. The 1080p screen uses a lot more juice than the 720p on the Note.
S4 is more powerful for gaming though that being said the Note 2 is still a beast.

I've said this before, and I'll say this again,. you won't notice a difference in 720p vs 1080p unless you obsess over it and has a perfect vision. I have seen nothing different comparing both hand in hand, text is slightly crisper if you are being very anal about it. What you ought to consider though is price, if you use it for gaming, and the screen real estate vs one handed use.

But you have to consider that most games are played at 720p even on the sgs4 so the difference(even at native resolution) is huge.

Actually the case is not as simple as "1080p is 2.25 times more pixels than 720p"..
Let's count Sub-pixels on Note 2; there are 3 sub-pixel for each pixel thus giving us the number of 3 x 720 x 1280 = 2764800
Let's count sub-pixels on S4; there are one blue sub-pixel for every pixel and there are one red and green sub-pixel for every two! pixels giving us the number 1920 x 1080 = 2073600 blue sub-pixels, 1920 x 1080 x 2(for red+green)/2(for sub-pixel sharing)=2073600.
In total = 2073600+2073600=4147200 sub-pixels.
The expected ratio= 2.25
The real ratio= 4147200/2764800=1.5
Still, the GPU has to push every image rendering for a 1080p calculation. This is why the power is wasted. It calculates everything 2.25 times more than a 720p GPU just to be able to draw it inon a 1.5 times sharper screen.
I am not against a 720p pentile screen because it pushes the 300ppi barrier so it can be more sharper for human eye in certain conditions, however a 1080p pentile screen with a "false/fake" 441ppi is just overkill for both the battery and the GPU..
I had the same choice. But am not a big gamer.
Went for the note 2 because:
- better battery
- bigger screen
- S pen
- cheaper

There are obvious (minor) plusses and minuses to either one in terms of gaming. I think you should take everything that's been said and determine whats most important for you to have...bigger screen, more pixels, better CPU, etc. I game but wouldn't classify myself as a big gamer...I've used both and I think the experience is comparable.
For me is better Note 2 for play.. The bigger screen is a big help and is different to see. My friend, when they see me to play, say that like a different phone that theirs HTC one or GS4.. And also, with the same game, i don't see difference about power...

Ive gone to s4 from note 2. Not much difference gaming at the min. The screen is brighter on s4 and is sharper but I still miss note 2. Although im feeling better with size in pocket and like design better.
Would I go back to note 2? Yes easily.
Ps battery lasts all day on s4

Do you like to use MHL to output your phone's screen to a TV? If so, I very briefly got to try my Note 2 vs an S4 a few days ago and the latter struggled in Epic Citadel (as an example). In general terms the Note 2 felt slightly smoother everywhere when using MHL too (although the S4 can power the MHL adapter by itself which was quite a cool feature, though obviously the battery nose dived pretty quickly!).

Note 3 1080p Pentile Display

is only slightly better than Note 2's non-pentile 720p display.
As a former Note 2 user, I tell you this:
To avoid further disappointment, please do not compare it with iphone 5's display.
Thank you Samsung!
As a current Note 3/Note 2 user, I completely disagree.

As a former Note II user I think you're out of your mind.
Here's text from both.

Here's a detailed review from DisplayMate who makes the equipment all OEMs that use displays in their products use to test them.
The Galaxy Note 3 has the newest generation of OLED display technology. The Lab tests show that it is better than the Note II in every measurement category, and also comparable or better than the display on the Galaxy S4. It has double the resolution of the Note II, which is a major improvement, but the most impressive advancement for the Note 3 is its significantly brighter screen, which hits an incredible 660 cd/m2 in high ambient light, the brightest mobile display we have ever tested in the Shoot-Out series. An impressive achievement for OLEDs!
OLEDs need to continue improving their power efficiency, which is critically important for mobile displays. We measured an impressive 26 percent improvement in power efficiency between the Galaxy Note 3 and Note II. While LCDs remain more power efficient for images with mostly white content (like text screens, for example), OLEDs are more efficient for darker content because they are emissive rather than transmissive like LCDs. In fact, Galaxy Note 3 is already 31 percent more power efficient than the Full HD LCD Smartphones we recently tested for mixed image content (that includes photos and videos, for example) with a 50 percent Average Picture Level, APL. If this keeps up then OLEDs may pull ahead of LCDs in total power efficiency in the near future…
