[Q] ROMs - Selection and Other Questions - Acer Iconia A500

Hi Guys,
I've got a stock A500 and due to the conflicting reports as to whether Acer will provide an OTA update to Jellybean, I've decided to flash a custom ROM as there as some minor quirks that are starting to bug me.
Anyway, I've found the thread to explain what to do - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1205204 - but it's left me with a couple of questions.
Selection of ROM
I can see at http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1136 there are links to various threads relating to custom ROMs such as CM10 Jellybean, AOKP Jellybean and CM10 Jellytime etc.
1) These have other topics scattered throughout so I was wondering if there's a page that summarises the various JB ROMs out there with a link to their topic page?
2) Without knowing each of the developers, how does one choose which ROM to use? Is there such a thing as a "vanilla/Plain-Jane" JB ROM?
3) Each of these topics have the first post outlining the ROM with a link to the zip file. Does the author update this link in the 1st post if there's update to the ROM or do you need to read through all the posts to see if the author has an updated link?
4) Once you've installed a custom ROM, how do you know if there's updates? Does the Update in Settings work or do you need to manually come back to the topic and see if the zip file is updated?
ROM/Kernel
At http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1205204 it says that you need
external SD card, root rights, unlocked bootloader (if you're on stock ICS), custom recovery and a custom ROM of your choice.

Yet further down it talks about Custom ROMs and Custom Kernels.
1) What are the differences?
2) What does a Kernel do?
3) Do I need this or just the ROM?
Thanks
PS - Not sure if this topic is better suited to be in http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1136, but since it's a question, the rules say that it should go in the Q&A section.

[Q] Modaco kernel download / help installing latest Modaco ROM

Hi there.
I am looking for an alternate server to download the latest Modaco kernel from. The downloads provided in the original thread are on a server that I am told does not support resume and the download tends to cut out between 10-20%.
Original thread I'm referring to:
Samsung Galaxy Tab / Galaxy Tab Android Development / [KERNEL] 26/Jan r3: MoDaCo Custom Kernel for the Samsung Galaxy Tab
Due to lack of post count I was unable to ask for one in that particular thread :/
Assistance is much appreciated.
Bump? Still having the same issue, and run into errors when trying to update to the Modaco custom rom, so I wanted to try flash to this kernel first.
My bootloader is not locked, and I have tried to apply the update via CWM but no luck, so I really want to try this kernel. Anyone?
This kernel should be flashed using ODIN. It is later when it get it installed along with CWM your will be able do updating via CWM.
Yes, but i cannot flash to this kernel when i cannot properly download it from the above mentioned thread.
Just keep trying. I had to type those stupid quotes like twenty times until I got the complete download.
You might find this helpful http://Droid-den.com/phone-guides/p...co-rom-and-kernel-on-samsung-galaxy-tab-guide
You can get a copy from here http://bit.ly/myroms
My server 99.99% uptime

i9100G - Root + CM10 install help. Firmware confusion!!

Hello People,
Let me begin by stating that I am very very new to Android rooting and custom roms (actually, this is my first time ).
I have a SGS2 i9100G. I have attached the screenshot of my phone software details. I have searched on the internet and XDA but am unable to find or maybe understand how to root my device and install CyanogenMod 10 (JB 4.1). Whenever I reach a post which seems like the way to root my device, it talks about firmwares and modems which are different than what my phone has.
I would be very very greatful if someone can sort this for me and provide some links and steps on how can I successfully root my phone and install CM10 (JB 4.1). Thanks a lot already as I know people will start replying in no time
Cheers
Sorry. I think I posted this question in the wrong forum. Please delete it. I am posting it in Q&A.
Sorry, Again.

[Q] stable jelly bean rom for xperia arc s?

can anybody suugest which is the most stable and powerful rom for xperia arc s?
i have already unlocked my bootloader, rooted and installed the cwm in the phone.
i would require the download link as well as the instruction can anybody help me out?
1. Go check the development section instead of asking here. The only few JB ROMs available for Arc/S are CM10 based ROMs.
2. No point asking for best ROM, everyone has different requirements that are satisfied by different ROMs.
(layman terms - different people have different opinions on different ROMs)

Just to add - There is no stable JB ROM, because we lack of libs, that are needed for further upgrades.
IMHO, FXP's CM10 is the most stable JB for our Arc.
First do not ask questions in the General section.
Second remember what popthosegaskets said above.
OP as stated from above....also do not create multiply threads on the same topic...

[GUIDE][HELP][NOOBS] Answers to the most frequently asked questions!

This is just a few of the questions asked many times.
I will keep it updated, it's not perfect right now, but it is a start.
[Q] Why am I getting the Custom Lock Screen and or a Padlock on my screen?
[A] You did not flash the correct CARRIERS kernel for your device.
[Search Hint: custom lock screen, padlock]
[Q] I boot and get the Yellow Triangle Unauthorized Screen.
[A] You did not flash the correct CARRIERS kernel for your device.
[Search Hint: Triangle, Unauthorized]
[Q] Is my device unlocked? Do I need to unlock it before I can flash custom roms?
[A] Only ATT and Verizon have locked bootloaders, ALL OTHERS ARE UNLOCKED.
[Q] I am a noob, where do I begin?
[A] There are many guides to start with, but these 2 are perfect for noobs. READ THEM!
1) [HOW-TO] The All-In-One Root/Backup/Flash Guide - [I337 & I337M]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2314494
2) [GUIDE][INFO] The beginner's info thread (aka. the noob helper)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301762
[Q] What is loki doki, and what does it do? [FOR ATT & VERIZON ONLY]
[A] It bypasses the Samsung signature/security check to allow the kernel to flash. Kernel and Recovery are checked at boot. So, if you flash loki'd kernel OR loki-doki after rom flash the kernel will boot. Of course the Recoveries are already loki'd, even if they are, flash YOUR loki kernel.(this needs to be done after EVERY rom flash).
[Q] How come I post a question and I do not get many replies?
[A] To get more people responding to your questions, Identify your device in your question. Keep in mind, as the replies start coming, it buries the original post with that info. USE THE USER PROFILE TO LIST YOUR DEVICE FOR EVERY POST! I can not stress how important this option is.
[Q] I try and boot, and it just hangs at the Samsung logo.
[A] In most cases it is just as simple as flashing the correct kernel for YOUR DEVICE.
[Q] I tried flashing with a recovery and I get errors messages flashing.
[A] Check to make sure the file is not corrupt, Try using a differnt recovery method.
[Q] My question is, is there a way to remove the mf3 update?
[A] NO, there is no way to go back from the new MF3 update. There are rooting methods in the forums here, but until a fix is developed, you can not flash custom roms.
MORE WILL BE ADDED!
If any of this helped you...please use the THANKS BUTTON!

Custom OxygenOS

Since previous development thread was closed, I've been getting a lot of pms. Everyone thanks for the kind words and for offering me help. Thumbs up for this great community.
The reason I didn't post the link was because my laptop or my upload server let me down. At least that is what I saw when I woke up.
No big deal, thought I would upload it upcoming weekend. But as we all might know, today oos 2.2.1 was released. My custom oos was based on 2.2.x, so I was thinking to rebuild this rom again based on the latest software. Meaning it will take a couple of weeks before it will be ready.
So far this briefing. If you have questions regarding this rom, for now please ask in this thread.
Link to original thread:
COSX
To the features, just add the viper4android... And try to make the files app show the root directory too.
I feel you should post ur 2.2.1 build directly when its ready..take your time and i do support what u stand for!! and if possible add network speed indicator
Since there was no answer to this on the original thread, what do you mean by theme support? Layers?
I'll be patiently waiting for your release
But, for playing purpose, are there any guide somewhere to create a moded rom from a stock rom ?
I've been looking but all i could find was from 2012
I don't think it's as simple a remove/add apks from the rom zip :cyclops:
Request
Please donot remove the stock oos camera which has manual focus iso exposure .... __/\__ please
