Unlocked Nexus 4 HSPA+ 21 or 42? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

T-Mobile confirmed their version runs HSPA+ 42, how about the unlocked version from Play Store directly?

http://www.tmonews.com/2012/10/t-mobile-confirms-nexus-4-hspa-42mbps-connectivity/
Update: According to Google’s press release, the Play Store Nexus 4 does in fact have HSPA+ 42Mbps connectivity as well, it’s the Play Store specs that are incorrect.

There isn't really any evidence that it is. Would be nice if true. Engadget is reporting the unlocked version is 42mbps.

They're the same phone. The only reason T-Mobile is the only carrier selling it is because they're the only carrier that'll sell you an unlocked phone just like they did with the Nexus S when it came out T-Mobile was the only carrier that would let you get it subsidized under contract. AT&T just didn't feel like subsidizing the price for an unlocked device so they're making you buy it elsewhere if you want to run it on their network.

It would make no sense for Google to sell the Nexus 4 on their website and only allow HSPA+ 21 instead of 42.

Technically it'll still get the AT&T HSPA+ 21Mbps, just that you're losing out a little bit since the phone could easily reach 42Mbps on the right network without a hit on battery life.

You obviously don't know Canadian cell phone carriers. Bell removed FFC's from some Samsung phones. Did you notice... 3 year contract. AT&T ... 2 year.
Think AT&T is bad... at least you have real choice in the states.
yea canadian providers are the worst! - I do love Wind and Mobilicity though
As an american living in canada the US has far better cell phone service, I just wish motorola made a version that worked on wind because that's what I use... 40/mo for unlimited voice/texts/data is too hard to beat =)
Still, it's nice to see they're releasing it so soon after the US release, usually canada has to wait MONTHS for a phone to hit their side of the border.

They are great. If you live in a metropolitan area. I'm juuust outside Oshawa, the Wind Zone ends 3 blocks from my house. Not good if I'm getting say groceries and need to call home to see if my wife needs something.
Or travelling. As much as I hate Rogers, my data usage in the states comes off my monthly balance

I'm in Halifax and was about to outbid someone on ebay.... a few questions though:
1) So, can I purchase an unlock code for it?
2) Also, what GSM/3G bands will it support?
3) Finally, no 4G??
Pretty sure you can get an unlock code for any phone out there... just a matter of price. In Toronto you can just go to pacific mall and a ton of places can get it for 10 bucks or so. There's some online sites that work too but it's a bit riskier.
It'll most likely be the same exact phone that AT&T has in terms of hardware since Bell/Rogers/Telus all use the same 3G frequencies now.
And for 4G... does any carrier in canada even have 4G yet?

It's like how AT&T is doing it, calling their HSPA+ 4G.
I was wondering about rooting the Atrix. The AT&T version is already rooted, would the same rooting method work for the Bell version? Would this only work if they have the exact same firmware for 2.2? I remember when I manually install updates for my Nexus One, I had to wait for the AT&T update to come out since the firmware was different than the TMo version. This was before the versions were merged. So I'm wondering if this is the case? Or does this have no relevance?
Will be getting the Bell's Atrix on the 17!
will this work on tmobile's 3G?

What that basically does is TMO and ATT will SHARE the spectrum, meaning their phones have to have the same bands, and you guys know that ATT gets most of the cool phones and TMO usually gets nothing but Galaxy S series as its top of the line phone.
That's really good news, i actually like it.
discuss?
Is there a list of what towers TMO received.
Does this mean i can use an unlocked international phone with 2100 mhz HSPA+ on t-mobile and still get 3G?

I honestly can't answer that, but just opinion wise, i think thats a no. International phones have different bands than that of ATT or TMO, but if ATT gets a phone that we don't (iphone) we SHOULD be able to use it.
They aren't sharing spectrum, they have a roaming deal. Which is totally different.
T-Mobile has had some nice phone though, didn't we have the first dual core? The Sensation, Amaze, G2X, and SGS2 are all top of the line.
Just curious though, wouldn't this mean that At&t's already terrible data speeds will become worse, since more people will be using the same spectrum?

Most of the current international phones are compatible with ATTs 2100 mhz HSPA+ network. Not LTE though. But i think what this new arrangement is to use ATT towers only for roaming where tmobile towers are not available. All t mobile phones do support the 2100 band, so that makes sense. But Att phones cannot work on tmobile 3G/HSPA+ 850 mhz band.

Yep. I wouldn't go buying an AT&T device just yet. They're not merging their networks. They're just letting TMo customers use their network in some areas. This isn't a full frequency overlap of the companies' networks as the OP is implying.

T mobile nexus 4 vs play store nexus 4

Will there be any difference between the 2? Is the one from the play store able to work on all of t mobiles frequencies? Thanks.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
By looking at the specs on the Google play store I'd say the lg nexus 4 should be able to operate on any north american providers gsm/HSPA+ services.
from the info out so far, it seems like T-Mobile's version will support their 42 mbps HSPA+ network while the Play Store version is only 21 mbps.
with that being said, i find it hard to believe that Google would sell this phone with 2 different radios. this same line of thinking is one of the reasons Google didn't include LTE on the Nexus 4.
i'm hoping (and assuming) that the Play Store version supports 42 mbps. if not, at least maybe some software hack could unlock 42 mbps access.
ugh, i just bought the Note 2...now debating on whether or not to return and get the Nexus 4.

I'll be ecstatic if t-mobile includes Wifi UMA calling for the Tmobile release.
The T-Mobile version will be sporting the 42mbps radio, I'm torn between the Galaxy Note II and the Nexus 4. The Snapdragon S4 Pro is better than the quad core Exynos. I love the blacks on AMOLED screens since I watch movies often the screen size would be nice.

Given this, there's absolutely no reason to get the contract version. You only save $150, while the cost of a contract can easily exceed $1000.

A few people seem certain that there is only one version of the Nexus 4 so no difference if you get it from TMO or the Play Store. A couple of links like the one from tmo news suggest the same info from a Google Press Release but none have linked to or published the press release so we can't be sure.
So there is still not certainly from my point of view and a chance that the Play Store version will not be a TMO 42mbps version. However if that's the case, you will still get 3G and even HSPA+, it will just not be as fast. To be clear, based on feedback from others, you might get 5mbps where someone with the 42mbps version is getting 8.

As far as data speeds go, you will get hspa+ and nothing more. Varies from place to place but for me averages around 5mb
