Next Tablet

So I recently had and Acer Iconia A100 die and need to replace it. Due to budget constraints I'm choosing between the Galaxy Tab 2 and the Nexus 7.
I'm familiar with the spec differences but I can't pull the trigger on one or the other. Any N7 users want to convince me? Let me know your thoughts... positive and negative...

You obviously already made up your mind to get the Nexus 7.

Whatever you do DON'T buy Galaxy Tab 2 they lag as hell, rather buy Galaxy Note 10 inch or 8 inch.
But if you're still unsure then flip a coin, you will know which choice to make when you realize which side you hope it lands on.

Why do you say that? I've posted in both forums to try to get input from users of both. Is there anything you don't like about the N7?

I only have some experience with playing with the Tab 2 WiFi version at WorseBuy. If you buy the Galaxy Tab 2 7", you will retain two things from your A100: the non-HD screen and the proprietary charging port. The 720p screen on the Nexus 7 makes a huge difference in usage, especially texts will be sharper and easier to read. Having a standard microUSB port is a huge plus because the cable is cheap so you can charge the device anywhere.
In term of performance, the Nexus 7 will be far faster with it's Tegra3. The Tab 2 7" have a TI OMAP dual core 1GHz, my Galaxy Nexus have the same CPU brand, but a faster model clocked at 1.2GHz and the same outdated PowerVR SGX540 GPU. I can tell you the Nexus 7 is a much smoother and lag free experience than the Galaxy Nexus and will handle 3D games much better. I know benchmark don't mean alot to some people, but this should give you an idea: Tab 2 7", Nexus 7. PS. I have heard people complaining about lags on the Nexus 7, well... I simply don't have it.
Where the Tab 2 win is the 3G version can make direct phone calls which the Nexus 7 3G can't, but it also cost more than the Nexus 7 3G. Of course, you already know it have microSD slot, back camera, and you can get an HDMI adapter, which is overpriced imo ($40) and will add to the cost of the tablet. The Nexus 7 doesn't have any form of HDMI out which sucks.
The most important factor for me is the software, and what follows might be a cliche thing you will hear in a Nexus forum. With a Nexus device you will get latest Android updates from Google and a larger developing community. As for the Tab 2, Samsung said 4.2.2 will be the last update and even with custom roms there aren't a lot of developers working on it. Despite what I said above, if the Nexus 7 only had the Tab 2 specs, and vice versa, I would still get the Nexus 7 because the benefits of AOSP, Google updates and many custom rom developers which makes a big difference in long term value.
You can also look at the Asus Memo Pad 10 if you don't mind going with a 10" tablet which is a good budget tablet. The text isn't sharp in 720p resolution on a 10" screen. However it has lots good benefits the Nexus 7 doesn't have, such as dedicated microHDMI out, USB OTG out of the box (no root needed), microSD slot, back camera, and Tegra3 chip as well. Also unlike the Transformer tablets, it have standard microUSB port. I had to return it because the digitizer on my unit went haywire and I didn't know how soon it will get CyanogenMod support.

Thanks very much for that, pretty much covers it all.
I'm really not worried about the lack of an SD card on the N7, I think I can live on 16GB. The lack of a rear camera worries me a little but I think the performance and Android support are winning me over.

Which tablet?
I have an Nexus 7, and i shouldn't know why it is bad. It's a fast and easy to use tablet. Very smooth. It's cheaper than the galaxy tab. But galaxy tab is not bad.... It depends on what you are planning to do with it.

IF it where not from you saying you have a very limited budget i would say with no doubt. Get a Galaxy Note . I have the nexus 7 and Note 10.1 . when im home The Nexus sits on its charger. When im out it goes with me because it fits in my purse. But lately i have been keeping the note under my arm when i go out. I love the Multi window Cascade/ Dual screen mode. You can Run up to 20 apps at one time. Most do not suspend while having another app in action such as hand writing a note on the wacom digitize r . For school or real work productivity . Price verses performance . There is not a tablet on the planet better then the Note.
Now the nexus 7 is the fastest slim sleek device for on the go use. I could never mount my note to the dash to use as a gps. It will NOT fit in my purse It uses a propritary charging port
My Conclusion is a Note 8 might be the best of both worlds. I just cant see spending the 400.00 for one when i have a awesome 7 inch Nexus 7 and a mind blowing Productive Galaxy note 10.1 ..
Maybe think about how you will pack it around .. Portability goes a very long way ..

I just sold my 8gb GT2 7" and I have a 16gb and 32gb N7. I wanted to like the Samsung more, as I usually enjoy their products and don't find Touchwiz as horrible as everyone says... BUT, the GT2 7" had to be the worst tablet I've ever used from a lag perspective. I don't know if it effects all sizes or just the 8gb but you cannot escape it. The stock rom is horribly slow and the various popular roms only help a bit. It reminded me of my old Android phones from 3 or 4 years ago in that you had to reboot it daily as it would slow down over time. My OG Samsung GTP7510 10" i/o tab is faster and a year older.
The N7 was had zero of these issues. Now saying that, the N7 has some cosmetic and power on issues that continually plague many people including me. But, when it's working it's a better tablet.
If you have the money buy a Note 8.0

Note 8.0 or upcoming LG G Pad 8.3?

Hey everyone.
Im gonna sell my Nexus 10 because its too big for me. I cant play games or surf the web comfortably. I use my tablet a lot everyday, much more than my phone, so I need it to be comfortable.
I think 8 inches is the perfect size for tablets, so Ive decided Im not gonna buy the Nexus 7.
So this leaves me with the Note 8.0 or the upcoming LG G Pad 8.3. This one has a 1080P screen and Snapdragon 600 (which Im not sure if its better than the CPU in the Note 8.0).
Both have 4.2.2, 2GB RAM, microSD slot, etc.
Do you guys think I should go for the LG because of the higher screen resolution or for the Note 8.0? It also has better materials, with the back being aluminum instead of plastic. It also has something similar to Multiwindow and another positive is the on screen buttons, much better suited for a tablet than capacitive and hardware buttons of the Note.
I must add I will have absolutely no use for the S Pen. I dont care for that and dont need it, so this will not factor in favor of the Note. Maybe I could even go for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0.

Sounds like you're in my situation. I sold my N10 due to the lag and size and got myself a Note 8. I thought I'd like the stylus more than I do, so I barely use it, even while browsing the Web. I plan to sell my Note 8 for a G Pad once it releases due to the better internals and screen. If you don't care about the stylus, just wait for the G Pad.
The only thing I'll miss about the Note 8 is the multi window feature. It's so nice for meetings if you need two apps open or need to take notes while viewing a PDF.
EDIT: stay away from the tab 3. It sucks.

I think a lot depends on what you will use it for. If you take notes I have to say the Note 8 is a great tablet. The LG looks pretty sweet, not sure the 600 is a step up from the 54xx in the note.

For note taking I normally use the Swype keyboard, so I don't really have any use for the stylus.
The full HD screen of the LG is a huge plus, but there's still no word when will it be available everywhere and at what price.

I know nothing about the LG, but the 8 inch tablet is the perfect size. I much prefer the Note 8 over the Nexus 7.

Yeah. I think 7 inches is too small to use for hours every day at home.

LG G Pad 8.3 to be available October 14th in Korea and other markets by the end of the year.
Price: 510$.
Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.

What about LTE and using this as a phone replacement. I am leaning toward Note 8.0 because I like the idea of using it with a smartwatch.

The Snapdragon 600 is better than the SoC in the Note 8. In fact, considerably so. It is the same SoC as in the Galaxy S4, and benchmarks significantly higher than the Note 8, especially for video. Real world usage though, I don't notice much of a difference, if any. Perhaps it would not be ideal to push a 1080p display though.
If you have no use for the S-Pen, why would you even consider the Note 8? It is only worth the price if you have an actual use for the pen. Unlike the iPad Mini or the Nexus 7, it is not a tablet for the general public, and was never meant to be.

I'm selling my Note 8 for the G Pad. The G Pad has better internals, better screen, better design and materials. I don't use the S Pen nearly as much as I thought I would so there's no point in me hanging on to this. Besides, I'd just put CM on the G Pad, so updates don't matter from LG. If you put CM on the Note 8, you'd be missing 90% of the features.

I'm in the market for a new 8" tablet as well and the only android tablet that currently fits that criteria is the Tab 8 or Note 8.
I'm very interested in the G Pad 8.3 as well but the thing is there any indicator that there will be developers developing for it here in XDA? I don't think LG's software is any good and I'd love it if any AOSP roms are available it.
Edit: wops, didn't realise this is a Note 8.0 forum. Thought it was a place for general discussion. Explains my comment that is not related to the Note 8 at all. Sorry

You don't have to agree, but given it's price point as compared to the nexus 7 and ipad mini, I'm right. It was never intended as a mainstream tab and will never sell nearly as many units as the other tabs I mentioned. If you have no use for the pen, there are cheaper tabs out there.

i agree that the note 8 isn't targeted to the general public. the price and features make it a more concentrated device made for those who need or want the spen and wacom digitizer. a gen pub device price would have fallen in line with other devices. add the fact that promotion on most note products isn't very prevalent.

I've just ordered my G Pad for 314€ with postage in price. The other candidates were the Asus MeMO Pad FHD 10 ME302C (with Intel) for about 340€, and Ainol Novo 9 Spark for 250€. The MeMO Pad is a bit too big for me. The Spark has meaningless high resolution (aka Retina) and it's just an "Ainol"... you know... sh!ty components and stuff.
The ideal tablet size would be somewhere about 8,9"-9", so the LG's G Pad with 8,3" is the closest to it. And for it's price it offers some really nice HW and build quality. I just hope the ROM cookers and devs will like it too
About those W8 8" tablets, I dont know, I don't really trust W8 is enough multimedial and optimized for use on tablets. I prefer Android

Nexus 5 or Note 2?

Nexus 5 released a day back and the specs are not that bad if we see. Now this has given rise to a hunger of having an official google product in me. I use my note 2 like crazy and love it too but I want to see how it feels having a nexus device.
Storage is one thing that still makes me think of retaining my Note 2. I dont use SPen much either. Nexus 5 looks strong on paper and its tempting me. Is it advisable to sell my Note 2 off and get a Nexus 5?

I am in same situation but specs are really a boost from note 2 but major flaws of nexus 5 are storage and battery life....though I really want to see the display comparison....is the nexus 5 display better than note 2's...I know its 1080p compared to 720p but I really saw some 1080p display looking worse than 720p's like xperia z1....
I will wait for some reviews and then will decide is it worth to upgrade..

Next Move will bring us to Note 4.
And the answer is no way to abandon my Note 2.

Performance on the Nexus 5 will be superior. That Snapdragon 800 screams.
The main issue is battery life. A petty 2300mha battery for a 5 inch 1080p display... It's going to suck.

Screen is slightly smaller with more pixels. But it won't be as jumping with colors as it's an LCD type screen vs our AMOLED screens which pop with colors.
The performance will be much better on the Nexus 5. Better processor. Same RAM. Better GPU. More FREE ram at boot.
Now, if I didn't have the Note 2 and I were to buy a new device, I'd get the Nexus 5. But I think the Note 2 is superior FOR MY USAGE. The SPen helps a lot, and the extra screen is great. The screen is plenty packed with pixels for my usage, too. The 2GB ram is great. In fact, the Note 3 having 3GB isn't an upgrade as you have LESS FREE RAM AT BOOT than the Note 2! WTF Samsung! haha. Anyways, RAM is taken care of by the Android OS. But Samsung takes up too much ram to begin with.
With Nexus devices you won't have that issue, as there is nothing at boot extra. It's only Android processes. So it should run much more smoothly. My Note 2 does stutter or lag a little every once in a while, but it doesn't bother me in the slightest.
I don't know... Battery life on both devices are different. Smaller with updated processors vs bigger battery with less efficient display & processor? I don't know... Wait for some battery tests? Regardless, I've never killed my Note 2 in 18 hours except for my vacation days where I'm on a bus or train for 5-6 hours then I get it down a nice amount.

i was also thinking into a change to a nexus but the battery definitely make me consider having my note a year more. i bought the note for screen and battery and mexus doesn't win at any. moreover i dt know any game yet that doesn't run smoothly in the note and the screen difference is not that noticeable since my cousin has a 1080p screen and mine seems to be better also for him.

of course Nexus 5. Note 2 will get its last update with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. But you will have many updates with Nexus 5. If you are not a traveller person, don't think about battery life. Buy 32 gb model and live your days good.

Non removable battery (instant deal killer right there for me), small and non expandable storage (32GB vs the 80GB total on my Note II), small display (even smaller than its 5" since part of that space is taken up by the virtual buttons), no S-Pen, no Samsung SW features like MultiWindow = for a poweruser they don't even play in the same league.
Samsung is doing something very stupid with the Region Lock and something less stupid but that is pissing powerusers and geeks off with the Knox warranty status but the (sad) truth is that the Note III is the ONLY smartphone out there today which I would replace my Note II with. ANYTHING else is INFERIOR to my Note II.

I gass you have very big hands to use note 3 like phone lol

I will get a Nexus 5 for sure to replace my backup phone HTC HD2, and will also keep my Note II forever!! unless otherwise Samsung smoehow try to screw it up with an dubious update,(yes I don't trust them anymore),I've played with a Note 3 at the store but didn't find it much an upgrade to my existing Note II.

I`d go with nexus 5..coming from note 2 user!!

Well, If I were to buy a new phone and the Playstore sold hardware in my country, I'd seriously consider the Nexus 5.
But as an upgrade to Note 2? No way. Sure, it will run circles around the Note in the performance department... but I find that for my use, the Note's performance is sufficient (even though it lags now and then). Even for games, the lower res mens that pretty much everything runs smooth so far. And the lower res doesn't really bother me, as I find the screen of the Note 2 absolutely fantastic... better then that of HTC One, IMVHO. Xperias just can't compare. Sure some text zoomed out can be a tad sharper on 1080p, but otherwise the screen on the Note 2 is just gorgeous.
The S-Pen is usefull... especially for extending menus while browsing the web. That's one unique functionality that only a handfull of phones has and means that some webpages can only be browsed with these devices. Other tricks like video or gallery highlight thumbs are neat as well. And it's good for Excel editing too, especially during a meeting (otherwise it's quite difficult in a zoomed out view - only view in which you actually see a reasonable amount of data).
Storage? For me 16+64 GB is barely enough. Actually scratch that, 16GB internal is definately NOT enough (a bit more than 10 GB available...). I hope an update can allow me to use the external memory for apps. My memory card is almost full as well. So 32 GB altogether? No thanks (even with less bloat).
Battery? It's decent on the Note 2, but I wouldn't call it a stellar performer. So here we have a battery that's smaller by almost a third? And not removable too? I'll pass, thank you.
Plus, does the Nexus 5 even have the USB OTG capability? I remember there were some issues with the earlier models. I like to output video via MHL... love connecting an external USB drive or additional memory card via a card reader and it can be nice to connect external controllers via USB. Is Nexus 5 able to do this all?
Other stuff, primarily Multiwindow and Popup Browser are neat also. Hopefully even Pen Window will be possible on the Note 2.

Think of it this way. Only for a few minor hardware boosts and a new Launcher would you really want to upgrade ?
Note 2 still stands as a power house when compared. And if you like the idea of talking to your phone start using Google Now the experience will be no diff.
On the other thoughts I would love to upgrade to Moto X if ever get an opportunity

After reading all your views I completely feel I'll have that itch with the nexus 5 when it comes to battery and storage Coz both things matter to me. I think my note 2 will stay in my pocket for comparatively good time

I am running the Ditto note 3 rom. .. With 4.3... Note 3 apps and installed the 4.4 kit kat apps on top of it. .
I also have the nexus 7_2013.. which will get 4.4 and is similar to nexus 5.. But I rarely use it. .
I use my note 8 and note 2 more
Why would I need the nexus 5 ?... Note 2 is good enough. .

C'mon!
Oh God! I think it makes no sense at all! Galaxy Note II is a pretty much older device which can still be compared to other TOP devices. Plus, the Note II has got touchwiz, and lots of Samsung applications which are pretty usefule. Nexus devices are a little too poor to me. I think that if you want to try out a Nexus device, you should try the Nexus 7 2013! I think that rocks. Got such a cool display, so incredibly fast and pure Google style. Plus: updates and other Nexus stuff.

Competition from Tegra Note

I have and use my Note 8 for work when I don't want to carry my Win 8 tablet, but this news of the Tegra Note for ~$200 is intriguing - especially with the performance the Tegra 4 will bring at that price. And stylus support? Wow! I'll have to wait and see what reviews will look like.

Honestly I prefer the side-by-side multiwindow that a rooted Touchwiz gives you, though, as that's pretty useful to me when I do use it for work (paired w/ the 2GB of RAM on the Note 8, to the 1GB on this device gives it some edge in the multitasking front as well).

I don't think it is competition for the note 8, I know it is. My wife wanted a note taking tablet and I got the tegra instead of the note 8, which I use. Good pen input is the only reason to get a note 8, imo. If the tegra has decent pen input it will certainly give the note 8 a run for it's money.

By passive stylus do you mean capacitive? I know the Note series and Windows Surface use similar technology found in Wacom tablets, utilizing a digitizer. There doesn't seem to be much competition on the Android side for the Note tablets.

The only reason I bought the Note 8 was for the stylus and thr ability to project it to a big screen(MHL).
I didn't need the quad core processor and 2 gb ram. The work is not that demanding. The microHDMI on the tegra is much better than the MHL.
The Tegra Note seems like an ideal tablet, even 1 GB ram is ok, but I am concerned that the 7.0 inch size could feel a bit cramped.
I expect the Xolo Tegra note to launch in India for about 15K

I think it's great to have another tablet with a stylus, especially at that price point. The specs aren't as high as the Note 8, but I don't think folks will feel that as much as they feel the difference in price. The most important point of distinction is 7 vs 8. The 30% difference in viewing area really matters. Steve Jobs had it right when he said a 7 inch screen compromised a tablet's functionality.

The OP implied that the new Tegra tablet is competition for the Note. That's not the case based on the different styli alone. Anyone who want to write or create with a stylus needs a Wacom one. The iPad can utilize a stylus as well, but it's not the same.

But have you guys seen the last video from Nvidia? Shows a lag free writting and painting with Tegra Note and his stylus, with Galaxy Note we have a lot of lantency. I make beautiful landscapes with my galaxy note, in the start is very good, but it increase the lag as i paint the landscape.

The Note 8.0 is far superior despite anything Anandtech claims. I have no lag with my stylus, and neither have other online reviews.
Plus every 7 inch tablet is crap compared to an 8 inch.

After watching the Nvidia made video demo of it on youtube, the guy tries to act like the tablet apps are Nvidia apps, but they are not. He even demos that "Write" app, which to me looks like his stylus lags when he writes. There is no way its better than the pen on the Samsung Note tablets.
There is also no way a nub tip like that will feel like a pen when writing. But this is just my opinion.

the lag may be due to settings. you can set the pen/stylus lag, (lag is a lot less than compared to Samsung). not sure about note taking, but the TegraN7 is decent in this area. the drawing app seems much better.
i do feel that the stylus for general touch screen use on the TegraN7 is much more responsive than any Samsung i've tried.

Does anyone here have hands on experience with both devices? If Tegra note can provide decent stylus based writing and drawing support (even with capacitative styluses) it's going to be a big deal for student population looking for note-taking and sketching aid...

I don't think the Tegra Note will be any competition.... However... I would like to side load some of those apps onto my Samsung. Any idea where we might find a system dump or pulled apks?

I was looking for something else when I stumbled across this thread so I thought I'd weigh in. I've had an Advent Tegra Note for a day or so now.... Firstly, it's very fast. It makes my Note 2 feel a bit anaemic. However, the screen is poor. I don't mind the resolution but the back light is uneven and colours are very bland. Whites look kind of creamy yellow like an AMOLED panel, but it lacks the punchy colours to make up for that so it just looks bland. My partner's Tab 3 8.0 has a far superior screen in comparison, even though the DPI is lower. This is also my first vanilla android device and I have to say I think it sucks. I think I'd rather have Samsung or HTC's bloatware on balance.The stylus is very responsive, more so than on my Note 2, but of course you just don't have the apps and system wide integration on board out of the box to fully take advantage of it.
Did I mention how fast it is? That really does make up for it so far. It's like a battered old car painted in grey primer that has a v12 engine hidden under the hood. And it's cheap!

I would go with galaxy note 8.0

I would go with galaxy note 8.0 because there are a lot more features it comes with. Also the screen colors do look better and I think it is plenty sharp enough for it size as in resolution so thing will still look good. The tablet is still really fast and should be smooth in hardcore gaming. Also if you really wanted stock android for the launcher (home screen and app drawer) you can just download a custom launcher like apex launcher or nova launcher to customize so it looks just like stock android. which is what I do. And coming from stock android , it gets a little boring after a while so that is why I also use launchers to make different themes.

I've had my Note 8 for awhile now, and like i said in my first post, i think it's great. It is getting to be an older model now and if i was looking to buy one, that factor would lower it on my list considering how fast Samsung abandons its models for upgrades. With ART coming soon to replace Dalvik and the potential performance gains that come with that, i'd want to invest in a device that has a good chance of getting it. One thing i don't trust Samsung for is keeping older devices current with Android versions.

Honestly I prefer the side-by-side multiwindow that a rooted Touchwiz gives you, though, as that's pretty useful to me when I do use it for work (paired w/ the 2GB of RAM on the Note 8, to the 1GB on this device gives it some edge in the multitasking front as well).

NVIDIA Tegra Note 7 is the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0. This tablet is significantly more expensive thanks to the included active stylus technology. A 16GB version of this tablet will run $359 or so.

I have both. The tegra 7 will be a xmas gift, but I've been doing heavy testing, including playing games on it that note 8 can't even play. Really hate to say it but the tegra note 7 is better in every way except the stylus stylus interface for writing. For art applications they nearly equal. Writing is not that great on the 8, though, so the 8 been a big waste of money for what was a business investment for me. I have had other issues with the 8. I also have s S4, and the Samsung gimmicks you mentioned are not usable in my experience. I am unhappy about the fact that the Tegra Note is superior, but I will still relinquish it Xmas morning to its intended recipient. Again, due to several issues with the Note 8, I cannot even use it for its intended use a business tool.

Please share your specific observations particularly with how you think the Tegra Note is better than the Note 8 in writing and almost equal in art or drawing as there are some here who automatically thought otherwise without even trying it out. Seems they are quick to condemn it as if they are threatened by this cheaper yet more powerful competition.
The thing I'm curious about is that difference in RAM. i know as I'm painting with the Note8, and there are more and more strokes on the picture as the piece progresses, it does start to lag and slow down. The Tegra Note is faster, yet has half of the RAM, so maybe it's still susceptible to this issue or worse?

Well it can do most basic purpose you require a bulky laptop for. I.e Internet browsing, facebook, twitter, watching movies, youtube, playing games, blogs, reading books, taking notes, chat, voice call, video call etc.

I think the specs you cite are not for the $200 evga tegra note 7, which has
-microsd
-1 gig ram
- micro sd
- 1200 x 800 ips
-1.8 ghz tegra4 quad
there aren't custom roms yet, but it's rootable and the bootloader can be unlocked. it shares a lot with the nvidia shield, enough that root tools and other work is greatly aided.
I'm using an hp slate 8 just now - same soc, 8 inch, 1600 x 1200 display, no stylus included.
I had it rooted a few hours out of the box and and bootloader unlocked within a day.
It is a benchmark beast, 16k quadrant, 3500 or so on geekbench 2
I'm very curious to get my hands on the nvidia stylus and apps. The aspect ratio is great for me. it is heavy - about a pound - and has a battery about 25% larger than than the note. Time will tell how much that really means.
No ir blaster and no smart wake and a very hard to find/press power button are annoying. I wish it had cap buttons on the bezel, plenty of room for them.
Color accuracy is better on the Samsung - I've been struck by that in comparison to every other tab, using photos I took myself.
Speakers are better on the note - louder and/or better ported.
The hdmi out is going to be very helpful on the hp.

Tablet Recommendation

Right now i have the Ipad 2 and i want to get away from it and move to a samsung product. I have Galaxy s4 and love it. Would you guys recommend this tablet or is there a different samsung tablet you would recommend? or should i wait till something newer comes out?

Recommend what lol? You didn't say anything. I'm not a fan of Samsung but I like the Note 2014. I've been waiting for a nexus 10 refresh but am thinking about other 8 inch options. I'm honestly just as lost as you are. I've never had a tablet and I'm still not sure if I need one

-Bigger Battery
-Screen I'm used to (Since I'm coming from iPad mini)
- Better Colour Saturation (in my opinion)

I would definitely recommend a Note 8 if you're looking for a small form factor tablet.
There are a number of pros to the Note 8 that I can think of, that personally aided my decision in buying one.
- Screen and Device. Slightly bigger than the Nexus 7, and not as big as a full sized tablet. My hands get very uncomfortable with large tablets, and the screen is of a perfect size and weight to do whatever tasks I want to do on the tablet. Not too big, not too small, but just right. Screen is also very easy on the eyes. You would think at 1200x800 resolution it wouldn't be crisp, but in fact the display is excellent for web browsing, reading, etc. I read books and comic books without having to zoom in at all.
- S-Pen. Perfect for writing and drawing. My son and I love playing hangman on it. It's a lot more accurate than using a finger, and since he's young he can easily practice his writing.
- Speed. This tablet has definitely got some power. When I got the Note 8, I wasn't expecting it to be as fast and responsive as it is. It never lags along and is extremely snappy with its tasks -- in the event that it does lag, it can easily be overclocked to 1.7GHz, 1.8GHz or even 1.9GHz with minimal loss of battery power.
- Build Quality. It may be plastic on the back, but it's sturdy, and the glass is top notch. Would be nicer with the fake-leather rear like the 2014 edition Note/Note 3.
- TouchWiz. Just kidding, haha. Nobody likes TouchWiz

EDIT: Totally forgot to mention expandability! Toss a 64GB MicroSDXC inside this sucker and you've got tons of storage for books, music, movies, etc. If you root, you can also use applications like FolderMount to copy large application data to the MicroSD card, so you aren't limited to the internal storage for your apps.

Tegra Note 7 is very similar to the Galaxy Note devices in the fact that it also has an included stylus and dock within the device to hold said stylus. Not many devices come with this feature anymore, and it's something that I wish more manufacturers would employ. At last another manufacturer sees the benefit of at least having option of a stylus there to use if the user pleases, or somewhere to put it in case they don't. As the owner of a Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 myself, I am ever so grateful of the dock on the bottom right of my tablet to stick my stylus when it's not in use. Otherwise yeah, I probably would have lost the stylus countless times by now. But I digress - the fact that NVIDIA includes this feature on the Tegra Note 7 already makes it a tablet to consider, particularly as a rival to the more expensive Galaxy Note 8.0, which costs $349.

While it may not be the greatest tablet, Sprint is offering the 7 inch Samsung Tab 3 for free (technically it's $50 with a $50 rebate) with a 2 year contract. What makes it attractive is that data plans start at $5/mo.

Another thing to consider if you can get the 3G (N5100) model is that you have always on email, web etc.
I think the Note 8 is very good. I'm happy with it and while I want more than 16 GB (actually 9.? if not rooted), I haven't run out of RAM yet.

Amazon's tablets are better if you already are invested in Amazons stuff (like Instant Video or Amazon Prime). Both are cheap and feature excellent hardware options.

I agree with you but you should also consider the screen size (8" instead of 7"). I've compared both N7 and Note 8 and the size difference is quite important without increasing the weight or necessary space for it.
