Thoughts on selling S3 for Nexus 4 - Galaxy S III General

I saw today that the nexus 4 was released and it's only 300....In my area I could sell my gs3 for 500 instantly... What are the pros and cons to getting the nexus over my GS3
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app

I probably won't, Nexus 4 looks nice but LG, I hate LG.

Pros,
Not Samsung - Source code available?
Cons
Slightly smaller screen? Though its only .1"
16GB fixed storage is the biggie for me

I'm also debating selling my s3 for the nexus 4. Especially if we can't get the sources from Samsung soon because we won't be able to run 4.2 smoothly without.

I think I will have to pass on this one. N4 seems really nice, but 16GB without micro-SD is ridiculous.

I think the galaxy s3 i9305 with LTE and 2gb ram is better!

I'm going!

Its in their buzz word of the eco system blah blah blah.
Hate buzz words!

i will never ever get a LG phone again. ask anyone who got a lg optimus 2x or 3d. there software and updates are ****

The updates won't be coming from LG, they will be directly from google.

I want to get rid of my s3 im hating the software updates and the fact its not stock its all that touchwizz crap. how much an s3's go for unlocked?

I just ordered my S3, it will arrive in a day or 2 (europe unlocked version for €490), but this Nexus 4 seems tempting, but first we have to see it in the wild.

thats all i want is a nice stock feel and knowing ill get ota when google releases it. i was apauled with how the s3 got jelly bean branded got it before the unlocked did

I probably won't sell my s3 as the main reason I like the s3 because the huge screen, I have used the HTC one x and 0.1inch is noticeable and with the on screen buttons taking up a good amount of the screen on the nexus 4, it shoots up a bit of a problem. I have terrible vision without glasses even though I am 18 and with the s3, it is the first device I can use without glasses. Also storage, google doesnt have google music in the uk and i have over 12GB of music on my phone and numerous games and video. I have filled a 32gb micro SD card and most of my internal 16gb on my s3, 16gb by it self just isnt enough for me. I am though planning to sell my galaxy s2 and galaxy tab 10.1 to get that new nexus 10 32gb. That screen and GPU look like a beast

I'm just waiting to see what the cameras like (after the appalling low light pics of the last nexus) then I'm all over the nexus 4.
Well... I'll let a few people on here get it first and see what faults it has first, and maybe wait till they have been fixed... But then I'm all over that nexus!

Sell sgs and get nexus s?

Should I sell my galaxy s and get an nexus s?
Has anyone else done this and been happy with the change?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
I was also thinking about doing so. But I also don't know.
There arent so many differences, are there? Display (no gorilla), LED flash camera, and I think lots of updates in the future for the nexus s.. hmm..
I live in Germany, the Nexus S is not yet available here. The price of Nexus S is also important for me. I don't want to pay more than 70-80€ after selling my Galaxy S.
But I heard the Nexus S will cost about 500€ here.. so don't know..
I think the working gps and all the latest google updates first are making me want to change.
Dont like the idea of no gorilla glass.

Isn't that what screen protectors are for? I would never not have one on my SGS.
As for selling my SGS and getting a Nexus S, I think the only advantage would be that since the phone is a Google phone and Android is a Google OS, updates would be quicker. I would figure that Google would spend more time and resources on the OS in their own phone.
As for the LED flash, I find that my SGS takes great pics in a dark place. If I need a flash, I will use my Canon SX10.
Here is a small comparison of the two phones.
Nexus S - No Micro-SD card slot
Galaxy S - Micro-SD card slot up to 32Gb
Nexus S - Bluetooth 2.1
Galaxy S - Bluetooth 3.0
Nexus S – No camera smile detection
Galaxy S – Camera smile detection
Nexus S - WVGA (720x480) video
Galaxy S - 720P (1280×720) video
Nexus S – No FM radio
Galaxy S – FM radio
Nexus S – LED Flash
Galaxy S - No LED Flash
Considering the Nexus is a newer phone, it should have had the AMLOED 2 screen and a faster CPU, but since it doesn’t, it basically has the same technology as the older Galaxy S.

so, basically our SGS is good enough to remain having it
I don't even bother to use screen protectors. Is it that important? I'm using a phone case insead.
I don't use a screen protector because of the gorilla glass display, imo there's no need.
Still with your SGS, Nexus one isn't nearly as good as is made out for the price they're charging.
forgot a few
nexus s : newer os gingerbread
galaxy s : froyo 2.2.1 latest
but as for google apps. the galaxy s at least mine with 2.2.1 now has latest google maps 5.0
also
nexus s: led flash but no night mode ...
galaxy s: no flash but night mode for low light that works fairly well
big one - i think this technology is cool and will take off soon.
nexus s : near field capabilty rfd
galaxy s: no near field capabilty
also
galaxy s: avail basically in a configuration for all carriers
nexus s: currently only avail. for T mobile 3g frequencies.
yeah the Galaxy S is way better phone at the moment
until next year new bunch of new phone releases
but for people with phone carriers running on 1700 / 2100
Nexus S is the best choice, i can't find anything better that turns on 1700 / 2100
the next best choice is the Samsung Vibrant (Tmo 1700/2100) but lacks the front facing camera, but it has the microSD slot
just keep in mind you dont have to buy every single new phone out there.
There will be a lot of better phones coming out next year i would defintely go for htc's dual core phone next year (if there is one)
wait for possible release of LG's DualCore processor phone that might be released to T-Mo in spring!
We sure are gonna see some crazy phones in 2011.

Well i think we already have a software problem, even todays hardware is not really utilized imho. I dont see any reason to buy faster phones in the next year as there wont be any software exclusively for the few fast phones sold.

True.
As for the screen protector, I would never go without one. For the few dollars they cost, why take a chance on scratching it. Gorilla glass or not, it can be damaged.
Besides, when they are free (just pay for shipping, about $3 in the states and $4.50 to Canada) it doesn't make sense to not have one.

For me its easy. Nexus s is not better then sgs.
Just external card is a big must and its very bad that nexus s don't have it.
Then the screen. Wtf.
I would never use a phone with a screen that's not as good as sgs has.
Screen protection?? You must be joking. Why would i ruin the phone with that?
Its like buying a sport car and only drive on Sunday and on first gear.

You'd lose so much money in the process for 2 phones which were released within 6 months, you'd be throwing away money. If you have plenty of money, go for it.
But otherwise, the changes aren't significant..

The Nexus S might be a worth upgrade for Desire owners, or those people having lower-end phones. Not so much of an upgrade for SGS owners for sure!
yeah...for me i will not waste my money for that nexus s...it is same for me to downgrade the phone..for me..i will wait for next year..2011 is a bunch of crazy phone.from what i heard, samsung is develop another galaxy s using dual core.is it true or not,i`m waiting for it

Wrong analogy. Your sports car analogy would be like using my phone on Sundays and only for making calls.
What about buying a new car and having the underbody rust proofed? Protect the part of the car that gets the most abuse.
You use the screen every-time you use your phone. It is the one part of the phone that gets touched, pressed, swiped, pushed, etc. I wouldn't want my nice clear screen to have scratches all over it. IMHO

Considering moving to the SIII? Share your thoughts!

Hey everyone!
So as we all now know, the galaxy s III is coming to sprint by the 21st, and many of us are considering moving to the SIII for our upgrade. I personally hope to get one on the first when my upgrade hits. How bout u guys? Would u switch? Have u already decided? Why or why not? What r u most excited for? What will u miss from the NS4G? Any thoughts welcome!
I'm personally very excited to experience its speed, camera, and huge screen as primary things, with the other enhancements coming in second
How bout u?

Totally getting one through my work but I'm upset its not going to be the quad core version. North America got screwed out of that in favour of LTE speeds. Anyone know how the dual core will benchmark compared to the quad exoynos?

I pre ordered the gs3 within 5 minutes of sprint putting up the pre order page. So yes, I am getting excited about this phone. This is kind of unusual for me because I don't normally get excited over release dates.
I am looking forward to pretty much the same things as you. The big screen, more speed, 2gb ram and I miss the memory card slot I lost when coming to the ns4g.
There is really only one concern I have and that's with having to use Odin. I have many bad experiences with odin and even the thought of using it again gives me a little apprehension.
I can only hope I like the gs3 as much as I have the ns4g.
_______________
Just Flash It !!!
I ordered mine about 2 min after Skunk ape. I've never had an issue with Odin myself and consider it an advantage of the Galaxy phones.
Yea I hear ya, personally I've had great experience with Odin so I'm not too concerned about that...I haven't pre ordered the phone only cause my upgrade isn't till the first . The dev community should be great since it seems to be getting supercharged with some of the best of the xda community going to it . I'm going for pebble blue myself, the white seems too glossy and not elegant, I love the way the finish on the blue looks, but of course gotta see it first

Benchmarks are so close you won't notice a difference. The dual core used has wider cores to allow more information to be passed through. The quad core doesn't have that technology yet so we're actually better off. Plus better battery life

Galaxy S III!!!
I love my nexus s 4g ever since cyanogenmod 9 has a stable version my phone has not messed up too much. i experienced 2 random reboots in the last 3 weeks. battery life is good. I was gonna go with the galaxy note because of the 5.3' screen but since i seen the galaxy S III even though the screen is only 4.8' it's better than my 4' screen. another thing that snagged me was not that it's not gonna be dual core it's the fact that it's gonna be the first phone with 2gb of RAM it might be a little sacrifice from the quad core it was supposed to be released with. to me i think the galaxy S III will be a great phone. yes they have bugs but everyone knows the verry first set of phones will have issues. thank god my contract ends this november so this way i can save up get the $250 32gb version and only pay $50 with my $150 discount and also i will be able to get some accessories for it like the wireless charger because that is set to come out 3 months from now. since my contract ends in november i will be able to get it. another thing that got my attention to galaxy S III is that they use gorilla glass 2 on it so it can protect against cracks. And when i get the phone they might have better accessories released by then like cases skins and maybe the otter box. i used to own the htc evo 4g but i went through 3 of them cause i had the white one so sprint said at the corp. store do u want to wait until another evo 4 comes in or do you want to take the nexus s 4g so i took it and ever since i did i like samsung smartphones now the camera runs better and smoother than that crappy htc ones they suck. well this is my reason to switch to Galaxy S III i hope u liked it.
Haha what a response, but very realistic and full . Thanks for that! Tho I must warn you that actually with an upgrade it is 200 dollars, so unless ur getting 150 from selling ur nexus, don't expect ur upgrade to get it lower, since 199 is the price after applying upgrade numbers; outside upgrade it is higher than 500 dollars.
To respond to the one who asked about quadrant and speed in quad v dual, I've read many many reports on the issue and it seems that the snapdragon s4 coming to the U.S. actually tends to outperform the quad in most areas, proving that more isn't always better. Also the s4 is based on a newer chip architecture than the quad as another person mentioned earlier. This means not only do we get an edge in the whole technology and in speed, performance, etc, but we also get a nice battery boost vs the international version because 2 cores takes less to operate than 4, S4 is also more power efficient, and finally, we have a really nice battery not to mention 2gbs of ram, so I personally expect highly impressive battery results, even with it being an lte phone, since at launch lte will be off anyway, giving us the performance boost and battery boost of the dual core, newer s4, more ram, all on a highly loaded battery built to handle a quad or a dual with lte on.
Does that make sense? U see how its practically a win win for us?

I'm probably gonna hold off until the next Nexus device. I'm really curious as to what the next Nexus device will look like. Hopefully by then the prices will drop for the three year term (yes...I'm in Canada -_-).
I waited on the Nexus S and it ended up being a single core device with specs identical to the Galaxy S released about one month before the first dual core phones.
So I waited until MWC 2011 to see what the SGS 2 would look like, as I was excited for that. I wasn't let down, aside from the lack of resolution update. But no AWS for a long time and when the T-Mo version came out it wasn't even the same device anymore.
I got a cheap Nexus S and so I waited on Nexus Prime / Galaxy Nexus. It looked amazing externally, but internally the specs were anemic. Most of the performance gains were software based, and basic things like camera were a downgrade.
So I waited on SGS 3, thinking THIS WOULD BE IT. Nope.
It's literally an SGS2 HD with two extra cores and overclocked gpu. It also looks far inferior to the Galaxy Nexus and even the SGS 2 - not that I care about aesthetics much but glossy plastic? Really?? One X has it beat on display quality and aesthetics, but unfortunately lacks microsd, removeable battery and has inferior camera.
Software is something that both OEMs pimped, and would be the first thing I would remove.
Next Nexus device is that low cost Tegra 3 asus tablet coming next month, after that who knows? I want to see what the Sony "Mint" superphone is, as well as the first LG phone with their new 5" 1080p panel.
Once again, my "next phone" is another 4-6 months out.
Being techbeard is suffering.

Honestly all the specs we could've expected came in the s3 aside from things like flexible display, which were really not ready for production anyway. As for plastic design? See the blue, and hold it before you say it feels cheap. And it is far from an HD sgsii. Granted its not as far of a boost but we shouldn't have expected another amazing jump, nonetheless this is quite an uograde, and as u showed, the siii wins out because of things like removabale battery, tho build quality is generally better on htc, Samsung has an impressive galaxy track record not to mention the development aspects of being able to use odin vs struggling aginst s off

I thought a lot of jumping in the Galaxy S3 but my Nexus S4G still great so I'm just going to hold out for the next Nexus this late fall or winter & if sprint doesn't improve with this network vision I'm off to T-Mobile faster speeds with there Hspa+ I've been with Sprint for 10 years!! Back on subject the Galaxy S3 is going to be a great phone with tons of Roms remember this time all of the carriers Galaxies will be identical except a few things like radios & apps so it be great to develop & port things all have same name no more E4GT or S2 skyrocket just Galaxy S3 pick a color & carrier they will also have sane CPU, gpu 2gb ram identical

Is it worth to sell my Galaxy S3?

Hey guys!
Really excited about this phone, but here's my list of drawbacks.
1. No LTE (Not too big)
2. No Micro-SD (Kills a lot of it, but I can squeeze.)
3. No physical buttons means less screen estate :/
So with these problems present, I really want this phone because of the Quad Core A-15's and the Adreno 320.
So is it worth it to sell my GS3 for $450 CDN for a $379 Nexus 4?
Im in the same boat
Me too.
I have a international GS3, and I plan on selling it and honestly, I'm looking to get just enough to cover the cost of the N4. I don't I'll have a problem with getting $375-$400 out of it on craigslist, what do you guys think?

Not sure why you would? I have the ATT S3 with AOKP. LTE + SD Card + fast updates from our awesome devs. Its a nice phone, but why would you get it if you have an s3? What difference is the processor gonna make unless you play heavy games.
If you like the on screen buttons you can disable home + capacitive on your S3 and have the nexus style on screen buttons with a custom rom. And the s3 has a bigger screen.
Unfortunately, Nexus devices have always been about compromise, so you just have to ask yourself two things.
1. Do you need LTE?
2. Do you need more than 16gb of storage?
If you answered NO to both of these questions, preorder one with the rest of us!

Value for money, Wireless charging, 2GB of Ram (Am using international S3), sharper display with higher resolution and PPI (320), sleek black finish and sturdy build (Corning Gorilla Glass 2 on both front and back):fingers-crossed:

Im thinking about selling my att sgs2 on clist...it has minor scratches...im thinking I can pull 300 for an unlocked no contract used phone since they cost 200 with a 2 year contract..am I asking too much?

I sold my sgs2 skyrocket for 250 like 4 months ago. Really depends on who you get but idk.
Sitting on these forums trying to make the same decision. I turned off lte on my gs3 to see if I could manage and realized my lte connection was terrible where I live and only slightly better where I work compared to att HSPA+
Every aosp ROM I install has a volume bug (apperantly happens in some phones and not others) otherwise I'd be on it now.
Direct updates would be awesome. I'm on contract for another 1.5 years with att, so I'm not saving money going to straight talk without paying an etf.
I've realized I only use 600mb or my 3gb plan, so using the cloud won't be a big deal.
I have a feeling like I'll get the nexus 4 and then need LTE or the extra space and completely regret my decision.

as for me i like to use the device for a bit and see it in person before i keep/sell/return
i love my GS3 im keeping it..will get the N4.. when the time comes ill give my GS3 to my mom/dad/sis
such great phones.. plus you will get lots of dev support on N4
The storage is a bit of a problem, seeing as I do like to have lots of stuff. But 16GB's gonna be enough. 5GB Music, 3GB Apps, 2GB OS = 6 still free .
As for LTE, I barely use it because of my data cap and the horrible battery drain it has.
As for the processor, I like to future proof my device, and with Quad Core A-15's and the Adreno 320, this thing is gonna be a beast.
I do love the design, black on black with the glass finish.

Sadly you're calculation is wrong...
I've got a 16GB INTL. S3 and have like 11.25 Gb available.
I guess because of stock android you'll probably have around 13gb

1. who cares.. honestly.. who really gives a ****..
2. people arent too happy about this, i can see why, but 16gb is something that can easily be adjusted to
3. lol youre taking like half an inch off the bottom, not a big deal at all..
in my opinion, for the price and the "nexus" tag, this phone is more than worth it. it destroys the s3 and oneX

Is Nexus 4 good?

Considering its not from Samsung, and LG isn't the best brand. Is it worth an upgrade from galaxy nexus to nexus 4? I purchased the gnex for 500 $ (dumb me) and nexus 4 is now selling for 299 $ only? WTF? What is the downside of it?
No microsd slot. Other than that it looks great.

If you want a faster CPU, better/bigger screen, more RAM, etc., then it is definitely worth an upgrade. Downside of it, is that it isn't available yet.
Considering it's not from Samsung you will not have squeaky plastic or inverted back menu buttons just to make it different, and no closed source software

I can't beleive we're weeks away from 2013 and they're making 16gb phones with no microsd slot...this is ridiculous.

Yeah lightpsycho! I love the Nexus series I love Google but i really don't understand this!
This kind of attitude has always baffled me. I don't like a certain device so let me spend my time in THAT devices forums so I can tell people about my dislikes?? Come on, bro!

if it was from samsung i wouldn't buy it, cause they would make another crappy plastic phone. I had S3, S2 i know their build quality
LG is good at hardware nobody seems to complain about hardware but yeah software :silly: but in nexus we will get it from google itself
so it win win in hardware and software both side
Haha okay sorry if you were referring to me!
Got it!
Cheers!
Also, it looks more elegant than the Galaxy Nexus.
Heck, it looks so good I would lick it.
Really, the only downside of the Nexus 4 is the limited storage options.
Besides, Google Music solves the low storage option for music, and you can always use something like Dropbox for extra bits and pieces if need be, leaving the onboard storage for videos and whatnot. So for most users, it should be plenty.
Must say I can't wait to get mine. For the first time I have the option of rooting the stock ROM, job done! That said, will probably end up going with a custom ROM in order to have custom buttons and slightly improved performance and battery life.

I wasn't bashing on this phone directly, I was saying this from a general point of view. I like Nexus devices. They have great specs and I consider them as near-perfect devices. I'm just saying we shouldn't be limited storage-wise anymore.

People seem to always mistake, build quality and feel of the device. Samsung phones look and feel plasticy, but their build quality is very good, the Galaxy S2 is propably one of the most durable smartphones, after 1,5 years of usage without a case and countless drops, it's still n pretty good condition, unlike for example the HTC phones of some of my friends wich look like s hit (volume button missing etc.)
The reason that im still glad the samsung isn't the manufacturer of the new nexus is the fact that I'm sick of power hungry, oversaturated, screenburning Amoled.

What are you talking about?
The only true weaknesses of this phone are the lack of LTE and the low storage options. But if you are on t-mobile and use more cloud based storage or just not too much of your internal memory then it's a great phone.
The Nexus 4 has one of the best processors on the market (Qualcomm SnapDragon S4 Pro), 2 GB of ram (galaxy nexus has 1GB) and an improved camera over the galaxy nexus. The internal battery is 2100 mAh which is the same size as the extended battery for the galaxy nexus or 300 mAh more than the 1800 mAh standard battery of the galaxy nexus. Also the battery on the Nexus 4 is "serviceable" because you can replace it by removing the screws on the bottom of the phone. It's obviously not something you can do on the fly, but it is something you can do yourself. The battery life on this phone in theory should be fantastic compared to the galaxy nexus because not only does it have a larger battery and a more efficient (and faster) CPU, but it doesn't have LTE which means that is one less radio to be killing the battery. I've heard some people say that the battery life has been poor but I read a review just yesterday and the reviewer said you might be able to make it 2 days with minimal use. Also keep in mind that this is on "beta" software, It is not the final version of Android 4.2 which will be released on the phone starting Tuesday and I've heard they plan to send an OTA to the existing phones on Sunday.
I plan on buying the phone. probably not on Tuesday, with some restraint I will make it a few months before I buy it and look at real user reviews.

Thinking about these 3 phones

Hi, I was thinking about either getting these phones for T-Mobile:
LG Optimus G
Nexus 4
HTC One X
Which one do you guys think is the best one for the price? I don't really care about features, just the specs (But they're pretty much the same)
Because I play a lot of high-end games and stuff. yea.
Thanks in advance
Personally I'd go with the Nexus 4.
In terms of Specs the Nexus 4 and the LG Optimus G are literally the same device, I believe the LG Optimus G has a higher resolution camera but the Nexus 4 has a higher quality camera.
The One X might be slightly better for gaming because it has a tegra 3 but from my experience it makes the general android experience feel sluggish outside of gaming.
The Nexus 4's gpu keeps up well enough (assuming it doesn't beat it, I haven't checked benchmarks purely speaking from experience), and you get a vastly superior android experience.
On top of that there's the "feature" that the Nexus 4 will always have the latest version of android, but if you prefer Sense over AOSP that might be another reason to get the One X.

There is a 8GB and a 16 GB version and no micro SD slot. It's a toss up, it depends what you want. Sometimes you can't have everything, you have sacrifice something. The micro SD slot which the Nexus 4 doesn't have does not bug me. 16 GB is enough for me. I don't listen to music on my phone nor do I store videos such as movies and stuff, got a mp3 player for that. I'd rather get the fast updates from Google and stock Android.
It all depends on you OP. What DO YOU want?

Nexus 4, plain and simple. ASOP is the best android, no question. The nexus 4 will get all the latest versions of android faster then any other phone on earth. Its the best phone if you want the best android experience. Don't worry about storage either, 16GB is actually a very decent amount.

I don't have a soul. I have an N4. Go for it.
My one x got stolen recently, and it forced me to get a new phone. I bought a nexus 4, and I need to say that nexus 4 is a God in comparision with one x much smoother, runs cooler and has much better battery life. Don't think about one x, if you've got a chance, get a nexus straight away

When i was first looking at the N4 as an option i was worried about not having a SD slot, but have now been using my N4 for almost a month now and I still have 9GB free on the phone
BTW the nexus 4 that T-mobile is 16GB which is decent imo and my only other worry was not having the LTE on it but the HSPA+ is pretty damn good here where i live i see 7mb-15mb down which im also happy with , this phone is by far the best phone i have had in the last 5 years .
Correct me if I'm wrong but getting a HTC One X is rather difficult, isn't it? It stayed very few months on the market and got superseded by the One X+. The one X+ has a bigger battery and comes with 64Gig onboard. I saw very good deals for that bad boy recently. If you don't mind messing your hands with Custom ROMs, the One X+ and AOSP Android should be a sweet combination.
However, stock-by-stock, the N4 would be the winner. I think the only points where the One X+ would win over the N4 are onboard memory and that curved Gorilla screen. I just love the way the One X series look
The HTC One X lags while playing Need For Speed Most Wanted, Moderm Combat 4 and some games
Nexus 4 / HTC One / Xperia Z / S4
