Thinking about these 3 phones - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I was thinking about either getting these phones for T-Mobile:
LG Optimus G
Nexus 4
HTC One X
Which one do you guys think is the best one for the price? I don't really care about features, just the specs (But they're pretty much the same)
Because I play a lot of high-end games and stuff. yea.
Thanks in advance

Personally I'd go with the Nexus 4.
In terms of Specs the Nexus 4 and the LG Optimus G are literally the same device, I believe the LG Optimus G has a higher resolution camera but the Nexus 4 has a higher quality camera.
The One X might be slightly better for gaming because it has a tegra 3 but from my experience it makes the general android experience feel sluggish outside of gaming.
The Nexus 4's gpu keeps up well enough (assuming it doesn't beat it, I haven't checked benchmarks purely speaking from experience), and you get a vastly superior android experience.
On top of that there's the "feature" that the Nexus 4 will always have the latest version of android, but if you prefer Sense over AOSP that might be another reason to get the One X.

Since I can't post outside links, I just compared the 2 phones on phonearena .C0M

There's also a 16GB version. If that's a concern the Nexus 4 probably isn't right for you.

There is a 8GB and a 16 GB version and no micro SD slot. It's a toss up, it depends what you want. Sometimes you can't have everything, you have sacrifice something. The micro SD slot which the Nexus 4 doesn't have does not bug me. 16 GB is enough for me. I don't listen to music on my phone nor do I store videos such as movies and stuff, got a mp3 player for that. I'd rather get the fast updates from Google and stock Android.
It all depends on you OP. What DO YOU want?

Nexus 4, plain and simple. ASOP is the best android, no question. The nexus 4 will get all the latest versions of android faster then any other phone on earth. Its the best phone if you want the best android experience. Don't worry about storage either, 16GB is actually a very decent amount.

I don't have a soul. I have an N4. Go for it.

My one x got stolen recently, and it forced me to get a new phone. I bought a nexus 4, and I need to say that nexus 4 is a God in comparision with one x much smoother, runs cooler and has much better battery life. Don't think about one x, if you've got a chance, get a nexus straight away

When i was first looking at the N4 as an option i was worried about not having a SD slot, but have now been using my N4 for almost a month now and I still have 9GB free on the phone
BTW the nexus 4 that T-mobile is 16GB which is decent imo and my only other worry was not having the LTE on it but the HSPA+ is pretty damn good here where i live i see 7mb-15mb down which im also happy with , this phone is by far the best phone i have had in the last 5 years .

Correct me if I'm wrong but getting a HTC One X is rather difficult, isn't it? It stayed very few months on the market and got superseded by the One X+. The one X+ has a bigger battery and comes with 64Gig onboard. I saw very good deals for that bad boy recently. If you don't mind messing your hands with Custom ROMs, the One X+ and AOSP Android should be a sweet combination.
However, stock-by-stock, the N4 would be the winner. I think the only points where the One X+ would win over the N4 are onboard memory and that curved Gorilla screen. I just love the way the One X series look

The HTC One X lags while playing Need For Speed Most Wanted, Moderm Combat 4 and some games

Wouldn't be a fair test as my One X has had a replacement screen and it isn't the genuine one.

I found the screen on my One XL to be significantly better than the N4, also the overall experience with CM on the OXL is better than the N4, I sold my N4 after two days and am happily back to using the OXL.

Surprisingly I have to agree. The camera (specifically) on the nexus 4 vs. CM 10 one x (with jb camera) is comparable. While there is a slight nod given to the nexus 4 in terms of low light performance, the nod is really negligible and I'd be willing to bet if I was using stock HOX camera, then HOX camera would undoubtedly be the winner in terms of color reproduction.
The screen on max brightness is bright on the nexus 4, but the clarity, detail, and viewing angles on the HOX do surpass the Nexus 4 easily. I was the guy that was thinking the Nexus 4 would be my next, but after using it, I am left feeling a bit cold and unimpressed. Android 4.2 is a huge leap in terms of functionality of the Android ecosystem, but talking about current hardware, the Nexus 4 doesn't offer too much to compare. Which is a shame, offering a quad core processor, 2 gig of RAM, and everything in terms of operation is negligible to current Android hardware.
Makes one think...

i agree on the screen, it is washed out and not as nice to look at as the htc, the viewing angles are not nearly as good. Colors are not bright and do not pop out. The camera is lackluster, i compared both side by side. everything else is for the most part better. If only i can find a buyer for my 16 gig white htc one x..
Maybe I will switch back when the N4 is in stock, readily available and CM10(.1) is officially available and stable, but for now I don't have a need for double the RAM and CPU especially at a $200 premium.
loads better phone than the one x

Wait for N5 or get S4

I love my N4, but the S4 definitely shows up with some tempting features. Should I wait for the N5?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
You need to make that decision for yourself. I personally am never leaving nexus because I can't stand the crap HTC and at&t put me through, and updates from carriers are extremely slow and unlocking your boot loader voids your warranty, etc. I'm done with it. I can tolerate no LTE and slightly older hardware if it means being the top dog and getting catered to by Google.
In the end, only you can make the choice. There are pros and cons for each device
Sent from my Nexus 4
A typical S3, S4 shopper doesn't know what and Android is, they just buy what they are told to be the other phone that is not an Iphone, the words "operation system" makes them bertstare at you, do you want to be associated with them?
At this point in the game, no matter how powerful phones will get, the N4's hardware will be good for years, we're overkilling our needs currently in my opinion.
It may be behind in synthetic benchmarks and will get left in the dust from now on but seriously, a quad core krait, Adreno 320, and 2GB of RAM? It'll be fine for a while.
Remember, most apps and even probably most games only use/need a basic dual core and a gig of RAM for functioning.
Imo, if you're into AMOLED, then go for the S4. I love Nexus devices, I love theming for them and what not. S3 didn't really wowed me much but the S4 managed to do so, I used it yesterday and I fell for it! Mainly because I'm very much into AMOLED and I love that crisp 1080p display.
If you asked us whether to jump off the bridge or not and we told you yes do it, would have you done it?

My thoughts exactly. I'll be sticking with this n4 until the dubbed "nexus 5" is released. The. Current n4 to the new n4 is essentially an HTC one X to an HTC One X+.
Its not a major upgrade, but its there for people that need to upgrade.. Or just want to

Saw a review of the n4 vs the s4. Obviously didn't pass the s4 in processing power . but they pointed out that most apps don't even take advantage of the speed that the n4 possess. Hardware wasn't that much different. Yes the s4 will have a few magical features like eye scrolling, whoop de do! But the plastic cheap body is still there.

I've owned 3 devices with SAMOLED and all of them have had issues. My SGS died and went green, My SGS II would go orange/Yellow at medium brightness and the GNexus had a slight blue tint. Switched to the N4 and love the screen.
My N4 will be with me for a long time yet. Looks amazing up against more plasticy phones
look at the HTC one before looking at the S4, im getting the One myself tonight.
I'm going to have to agree with most replies posted already. I'm sticking with the Nexus 4 for another year, then maybe getting a Nexus 6 (or whatever that next Nexus device will be called). The phone is so insanely cheap, yet packs the latest and greatest hardware. It's perfect. Yeah, the newer phones coming out like the S4 will have slightly better hardware, but it's been 6 months since the Nexus 4 got released. That happens with every cell phone in the history of cell phones. Heck, the Nexus 5 will probably have better hardware than the S4 when it finally comes out.
I guess what I'm trying to say OP, is make that decision for yourself. All phones have their pros and cons. If I were in your shoes, I would try to wait for the N5, but I can see the appeal of getting the S4. It's a darn-good phone, and you don't have to wait for it to be released. Actually, I was in your shoes a few weeks ago. I ended up getting the Nexus 4 because it's still a solid phone, and I don't have to wait for the Nexus 5 to come out, plus I can get it off contract for close to the price I'd have to pay for the S4 on-contract. There are multiple things you have to consider when making that decision. Some things that helped me make my decision and will help you makes yours is some comparison articles. Google something like "Nexus 4 vs Galaxy S4". The article will be comparing the Nexus 4 instead of the Nexus 5, but it will still be helpful because they usually touch on things like pure Android vs company-customized Android and the pros and cons of each, among other important things.
Actually, depending on how time-sensitive your decision is, I would wait until Google's I/O event to see if they will be revealing a newer version of the N4, or maybe teasing the specs of the N5. That should help your decision.
For me software plays a big part and with a nexus device we will see 4.3 soon, and key lime pie after that. The sgs4 and others will still be on older software.
Sure the Samsung has a better camera, expendable storage, removable battery if those things are important too you then purchase the Samsung. For me 16gb is enough for my needs, the battery lasts me a day without having to recharge, and the camera takes ok shots I can live with that until the next nexus.
Decide what you need out of a phone, only you can decide that, handle the Samsung and see how you feel with it.

Galaxy Nexus owner considering upgrade to Nexus 4

I was really hoping for the rumored 32GB LTE version to be announced at I/O but it seems that phone is a myth. So I'm now considering getting the current Nexus 4.
I'm curious to know if there are any ex-Galaxy Nexus owners in here and what their take on it is. Personally I love my phone for normal use. Running CM10.1 I'm able to do everything--aside from games--with smooth ease. Sadly, Subway Surfers and Iron Man are almost not worth playing on my phone and that's kind of a bummer. I'm also starting to see ghosting/burn-in in my screen, which isn't horrible but I think I'm over AMOLED. The real kicker is that my volume rocker has stopped working and it is the most inconvenient thing I've ever experienced on a modern smartphone.
So, should I upgrade?
I had the Galaxy Nexus and love the N5.
It's a worthwhile upgrade and at $349 the price can't be beat!
I say go for it! :good:

Now, I don't want to start a whole Nexus 4 vs. GS4 GE debate, but I do want to just point out that both phones have their pros and cons. GS4 GE has removable storage and battery, and does have better hardware. Nexus 4 costs about half as much and is still a top-of-the-line phone. Again, not trying to start a debate, but OP, if you're considering upgrading to either of these, I'd say go check the pros and cons. There's a thread you can go to made specifically for debating the N4 vs any other phone. If I find it, I'll edit this post and put it in.

I spent $600 on my Galaxy Nexus a month and a half before it went on the Play Store. I told myself I'd never spend that much on a phone (upfront) again. While I would love the S4GE, I just can't see myself dropping $650 + tax + shipping.

I did and am extremely happy with the decision. I had the GNex on VZW, and even got rid of my service so I could switch to the N4 on a GSM provider. Very glad I did. This phone is extremely smooth and the developer support is tremendous just like our old Gnex. Only downside compared to Gnex is lack of replaceable battery but I really havent run into an issue with this. I have an external battery backup just in case, but havent even run into a situation where I needed to use it. Plus as everyone else has noted the price simply cant be beat. There might be newer, more powerful phones on the market now (GS4, HTC1) but they would run you double to buy outright or you would have to lock in a service contract. In my opinion it just isnt worth the extra money for those, plus they lack the full nexus experience.
N4 has better screen, battery, design, quality.
And of course CPU and GPU is light years away.
After that is camera 2 gigs of ram that makes the super smooth.
So to conclude it is much better than GN.
Stop thinking about it. Buy N4 and sell the GN or keep as a spare.

I did the upgrade a few days ago and I can tell you that it's totally worth it! Even with the upcoming S4 Google version, I think N4 is still a better choice by design and functionality. (Yes, S4 is more powerful in terms of hardware but the button design has ruined everything IMO)

I agree with you. When I first came off of the amoled my Nex4 did look washed out. Once I got used to the colors on the Nex4 I realized how much more true to life they are. Now when I look at amoled it looks like a over saturated replica of colors.
The N4 makes the GNex blow IMO.

S4 mini versus Nexus 4

If you had a choice, which would you buy? The specs are nearly same and S4 Mini has a bit better specs interns of front camera, memory card, 4G and size. While I like the nexus 4 nterms of the android version as I am bored with the Samsung ones. For past couple days I have fixed my mind on nexus 4 but now after seeing S4 mini specs as well as complains of nexus 4 being over heated, im wondering which phone to buy.
S4 mini? Seriously?

The n4 doesn't overheat iv had mine 4 month now total stock too, in terms of comparing it to the s4 I'd rather have the nexus hands down it looks better feels better you get updates months before Samsung the nexus front camera is 1.3 which is more than capable for video calls etc the only disadvantage is the memory and why would you pay over the top for the s4 when you can buy a nexus or 2 even for the price of one of those

Well specs wise it seems to match somewhat:
http://www.phonearena.com/phones/compare/Samsung-Galaxy-S4-mini,Google-Nexus-4/phones/7788,7531
The s4 had a handy size which i liked, so kinda confused now. So looking for good reasons why Nexus 4 is a must buy instead of S4 mini. Im not really a gamer or using the phone for movies. So i just need phone for work use and probably work apps, good video calling (s4 mini has 1.9 Mp front camera compared to 1.3 of Nexus), good interface (in which nexus is better).
Well, it's August now which means we're probably a little over 3 months away from an update so I'd probably wait. That aside, having a nexus device for me is just as much about supporting a cause as it is about owning a phone. Easily unlocked/rooted, timely updates, no carrier bloatware, no contracts and longer supported devices.
I get more freedom and support from Google than I do anyone else. The more manufactures see people use nexus devices, the more likely we will see a culture change. If these things like this don't matter to you, is really just a coin toss.

I'd say if those are your criteria then get whatever's cheaper in your area since both will do the job more than well enough. Personally I'd take the N4 any day over the S4 mini. If you're concerned about the N4's screen size, don't be. I had the same thoughts as well when I upgraded from my 4.3" HD2 but now anything below 4.7" feels small.

buying N4 in 2014?

hello, I was wondering what phone to choose next to use daily and I thought of Nexus 4, but I'm a bit concerning since this phone is quite long in market and should I really think about buying one by myself? Maybe someone could give me advice about this matter?
I would, I bought mine in February. it's indeed for quite some time on the market but it's still on of the best and the support on XDA is unbelievable. I really love this phone!

How could anybody really tell if it's worth it?
Without the information of how much you can get it. How much other newer phones will cost you.... What are coming from.
For example a nexus 4 around 300 us dollars when a nexus 5 is new for 350 doesn't make much sense. But for a different price it can make a lot of sense.
I would say go for a
nexus 5 or a g2
In UAE both are for (400$) now so........
If can find a new n4 then.......
It have to be at 200$ if no, then don't buy it

Im coming from old xperia, so almost any new device would be an upgrade for me anyway.
N5 for $350 would be ok, but it is not possible for me to acquire it for that price (it is somewhere around $500).
I was considering lumia 920 /xperia SP and Nexus4, and all are basically in the same price range.
Well despite it's ****ty camera (compared to other smartphones in the same price range), it's the most obvious choice when it comes to functionality, performance, customization and support. If you can live with that, get a Nexus 4.
There are lots of similar threads, I don't see the point of opening a new one, considering all the phone in your price range are relatively dated ones too.
I bought mine 3 weeks ago and i am happy. 250 euros, new. The N5 is 330 euros.
Camera was bad at first, but the more i use it the better the photos are (call me crazy haha) so the pictures are very nice now. My ex-Note 2 had better autofocus and video, but the N4 camera is better in every other part.
i bought a nexus 4 on 1st january, u can also go for galaxy s3 , its quite a good phone with better camera and display,,
Sure the nexus 4 is a great phone with an unbelievable good support on xda. But i suggest to buy a Samsung galaxy s4, because it has some features, which were for some people are important. For example changeable battery, no softkeys , better display , sd card slot etc. But if you want a very good support and tons of roms then nexus ftw.

I'm constantly switching between my N4 and N5, and the difference is noticable, but only when you have both side by side. Nexus 4 is a very good device as it is, capable of handling most of what you throw at it. If you get a good price for it, go ahead. You won't regret it
get the neuxs 4, i just got a samsung s4 to compare it and i find it terrible, the s4 has alot of features but if your not staying on touchwiz your better off with a nexus, you can get used to not having a sd card.
After having a nexus4 you feel no need to upgrade, the n5 looks nice but i think battery isnt big enough for the 5 inches.

the reviews state its better on battery and faster to charge than the nexus4, reading reviews people expect a bigger battery due to the screen size, comparing other phones with 5inch displays, but vanilla android helps significantly
having a samsung s4, i was expecting the 2600mah battery to last a very long time, it was ok on standby and with touchwiz but all the bloat and features consume power, with the display on it was simple to trigger 1.8ghz and that would drain it faster, under clocking didnt help with UI tearing there are kernels and roms to help but i only like PA
i will wait for hybrid on PA before updating to kitkat
dont bother about nexus 6,7,8,9,10, if you want to future proof by a nokia 3310 and wait 10 years.

but a Nexus 7 and 10 already exist
Yeah it's much faster to charge and much slower to completely deplete the battery. Sure it could've had a bigger battery, but it could have gotten a high price too. People tend to forget the price of a nexus device and expect it to be the best of the best.
The nexus 4 is epic, I bought it in September and it is rooted and has a custom rom on it. It has quite good battery life, really good performance, and it keeps the stock android experience rather than Samsung phones clogging up the phone with TouchWiz.

But if you install a custom ROM like cm or Google edition, then its like a nexus with pure android + changeable battery+ SD card slot+ better camera and display. Don't understand me wrong ( i love my nexus 4 and its smooth and powerful, without any lags). I am not a Samsung fanboy but if i can choose today which phone i should take i would take the s4 or lg g2.

You can wait for a while and buy the Nexus 6.
When will it be released? somewhere around october/november? I'm afraid that would take too much time.
Trust me it's a great phone even today. I bought mine around Fall 2012 and although I had to change the battery once, it is still running extremely smooth with Kit Kat 4.4.2. I recently upgraded to an iPhone 5S but gave my dad the Nexus 4. He says it's really speedy and at times even faster than the iPhone. Good phone for the price.
