[Q] Windows Media Centre - Windows 8 General

Hi all
I have upgraded to Windows 8 Pro using download media. I then took advantage of this offer:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/feature-packs
I received my key by email and followed the instructions to run the "Add features to Windows 8" wizard and enter the key.
The wizard accepted the key and I was prompted to restart my PC to install Windows Media Centre.
After my PC restarted I could not find Windows Media Centre anywhere. As far as I can see it has not been installed.
The "Add features to Windows 8" wizard has now disappeared so I don't know how to resolve this issue and get Windows Media Centre working.
Has anybody else encountered this problem? If so, how did you resolve it?
God bless

It should be at the far right of the Start Dashboard. If it's not pinned try searching for it as it should have gone on.
Roland

if you changed user accounts after installing it, it will vanish off the tiles, right click in metro on anything other than a tile ( blank desktop space) that brings up the lower task bar, click on "all apps", right click on WMC and click on pin to start and pin to task

Not in "All Apps"

Hi dazza9075
It's not in "All Apps". I can't find any reference to Windows Media Centre on the system other than in the about screen which now says "Windows 8 Pro with Media Centre".
Any suggestions?

well, the actual location of it is
%windir%\ehome\ehshell.exe
you could go there and make the short cuts, paste them to your desktop and pin them where ever you want them

Worked it out

Hi all
I worked my problem out. Prior to adding WMC to Windows 8 Windows Media Player was disabled through the "Turn Windows features on or off" applet. As WMC depends on WMP, if WMP is disabled, WMC will start off disabled as well.
Once I went into the "Turn Windows features on or off" applet and selected WMC, it asked me to select WMP also, and now it works.
Thanks and God bless

I had this problem - here's what I did...
If you haven't got Windows live installed - download the cab form here and install:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3631409&postcount=3019
After install if "Windows Live" still hasn't appeared in your Titanium, do this:
Go to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\CHome\CWindowsLive
Change the "Disabled" key from 1 to 0.
Hope this works for you
I didnt want to open a new thread, but is there any way of making any google quries right through Titanium ?
Ive looked for it for quite some time, but there doesnt seem to be anywhere I can find one.
windows live
hi! i install windows live on my hp ipaq voice messenger its install but not started why???
if you dont see it in titanium then I wouldn't go mucking with the registry if you don't know what you are doing... in the windows marketplace theres a homescreen customizer... just download that and you can add what you want to it.

Hi People
I'm searching for a great remote desktop mobile for my new HD2 and have problems to find something good.
I'd love to install LogMeIn, but i suppose is impossible at this moment,
This Night i found this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFiDZ_wBAtM&NR=1&feature=fvwp
I suppose is from RDM plus, i install a demo version 3.7.6 and it is very different compared to the Remote desktop mobile from youtube Video.
Where can i find the remote desktop mobile from youtube video?
Need your help, please
Thanks
That's the remote desktop client that comes with Windows mobile 6.5. It's in your start menu, in the tools folder
boss the remote desk top shown in you tube vedio is same as in hd2 .........
its not different ........
Logmein - Ignition works just fine.
or as the others just said - just use the one that came with your HD2.
just wondering whether anyone could help us to set it up step by step...
also just wondering do you have to have a router or it can also work on wireless USB broadband (thats what i have)
I used the theme in our forum for this, but I didnt succeeded with it, because Im using PPPoE internet and when I set everything, their appears conflict and the internet drops...
I found the app already, but what I'm looking for is how I can setup the use of a remote desktop gatewayserver?
The server I address is an IP-address, but in the Windows 7 setting, I need to specify this gatewayserver.
I'm no admin, so I can't install something @ server side.
Thanks for your help!
Koen
PS I was even trying to run only Remote App, instead of Remote Desktop...

First off - well done on getting it working
Secondly, install BsB Tweaks (if you haven't already) as that will let you fix both zooming and auto-rotating in it.
In BsB you can say you want to add an app for either zooming or rotating (you do them seperately, but it's the same process). You'll have to shake the device to let BsB know which app to make changes for. Just make sure you do it on a connected session (in remote desktop), NOT the login screen. They're 2 different things.

Windows SideShow BT connection problem

Hi all,
Using Windows7 x86 Ultimate and I am trying to connect HD2 (factory ROM) to a PC.
I´ve already solved de missing BT driver (used Microsoft Corporation Mobile Device Driver).
But Windows Sideshow does not connect.
I got Sync and file transfer working. It seems “well paired”
Even previously I had it working with Qtek S200 and Vista.
But now it all sucks big time.
Any clues?
Thanks in advance.
You need to enable SideShow using the local group policy editor, gpedit.msc

Thanks for the tip.
I followed this how-to
1.Type gpedit.msc in the Start menu’s search box and then press Enter.
2.Navigate to User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, and then select Windows SideShow in the left column of the Group Policy editor.
3.Double-click Turn off Windows SideShow in the Settings section of the Group Policy editor.
4.Select Enable and then click OK to save the changes.

But it was already ok
Even, the icon is not present at the control panel of W7. I had to search and then copy a shortcut.
I believe there is something wrong with the drivers used by W7.
Any other clues?
Is it a Windows Sideshow problem?
Did W7 stop supporting Sideshow?

I gather from the developer preview page on the Microsoft site that this will only work on Windows 7 if initially paired with a machine running Windows Vista!
Also, the Sideshow control panel applet is only visible if a sieshow gadget has been installed. However one can open the applet by searching for "Sideshow" in the Help and Supprt, and navigating one of the resulting links.

Thanks!
Nevertheless, pairing 1st with a Vista machine is not an option.
I had found the WSS applet in Windows7, but the problem remains.
Too bad, it was such a great way to control a HTPC with windows7...

Install Windows XP on HTC Shift - your update please

Hi everybody, I'm new to this HTC Shift forum. I've bought a short while ago one HTC Shift s/h, it works all right, but I am very unsatisfied with Vista, even after the F3 recovery it is so slooooowwww!
Therefore I would like to speed it up by installing Windows XP (for which I have the necessary license).
I did my good reading on this forum, but almost all the threads are 1 or 2 years old, some of the links are already dead, so I did not come to a firm conclusion on whether Win XP works completely OK on the HTC Shift. I've been reading about problems reported in connection with certain drivers, touch screen, wireless, Shift Control Center, SD and SDHC cards, switching resolution, WMP, etc which I don't know if have been sorted out or not.
So it would be great if somebody could confirm me if installing Win XP leads firmly to a positive result. Pointing to some updated links for the appropriate downloads would be the other great thing that I would appreciate.
Looking forward to your soonest answers!
Thank you so much!
I have installed Xp only on my Shift long time ago, everything is working faster and better.
Keep in mind you will not have Shift Control Center anymore but a directory with shortcuts to switch BT,WiFi,Reset Snapvue,Etc.
Also Gsensor is great with Screen Rotation.
Follow this link to install WinXp - contact me if you encounter some problems.

As Wireless Connection Managers for wifi and BT I know 3 tools that are doing the job in XP for specific brand notebooks: HP Wireless Assistant, Dell QuickSet and Asus Console Utility. I wonder if any would work on the XP Shift. I will let you know once XP installed and running, probably next week or so. About managing the 3G modem, I guess this will stay on "manual". I have no idea about how to bring up the Snap View hard-reset button.
On the other hand there were some links on this forum, all broken now, for DL an XP adapted Shift Control Center. Did that piece of sofware really exist and work fine or was it just a bluff?
Hi again everybody!
Just one question before I stat the xp install: performing the HDD Format operation during xp install would distroy the Vista recovery partition or not?
A quick answer would be appreciated and would help me a lot!
Thank you!
From what I remember Hdd format would not destroy Recovery partition as it is hidden and read only. You would need to unhide and make readable to change it.
Than about Shift Control Center for XP you will have the ability to:
Wifi Control
BT Control
SnapVue Reset
Snapvue EnterBootloader
Sound control
This is my improved version.
I was planning to make a Control Center GUI with C++ but always delayed who knows maybe one day I will find some free time will surely post.

About the Shift Control Center for XP, when you wrote "This is my improved version" did you mean that you actually have it and you can load it somewhere for public use or that you just listed the features of what you planned to be?
Anyway, if you still have the "traditional version" of the Shift Control Center for XP mentioned several times on this forum, I would much appreciate if you could attach it to your next post or sent it to me via PM.
Thank you and have a nice week-end!

[Q]Hacking Windows Media Center on Windows 8 Enterprise RTM

I have Windows 8 Enterprise, yes,a legal copy from where I work. It does not come with Media Center, NOR can you use the method to "Add features" as it does not work on the Enterprise version. I have searched this to death. I have a valid Windows Media Center key from Microsoft but, there is no place to enter it.
Has anyone found a work-around to get Media Center working on Windows 8 Enterprise ?
I would of posted this in the Q&A area but there is no Q&A for windows 8 and this is more of a hack than a supported method.
This actually belongs in Windows 8 General, not here.
Nevertheless, I will answer this for you... Did you visit http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/feature-packs? I assume you did since you say you have a Serial Key, correct?
When you actually get that email, press Windows-W (Settings) and type "add features" and click the "I already have a serial key". Paste in your key and press next/follow prompts and reboot your PC and now you have Media Center.
I love how this lseidman clown is on some "well, as a matter of fact" bullsh*t.
lseidman, if you took a few seconds to read the question instead of being a ****, you'd see DavidinCT mentioned that method does not work.
DavidinCT, I did a few Google searches using "windows 8 enterprise media center" and it would seem that the Enterprise version does not have WMC.

Right...seeing if anyone found a work-round for it to be able to install it. I know it's officaly not supported but, wondering if there is a "hack" to get it installed.
If it installs on pro, there must be a way to get it to work on Enterprise....
It would stink to have to install and pay for another version just because I want an app, i already have rights to. See my point ?

I understand that his method it wasn't successful but on SOME Enterprise TechNet Key's it HAS worked. You can "Google" that. Also, since you both use Google, you'd notice Microsoft never claimed WMC would work on Enterprise. If you're Norweigan, it'll work on Enterprise (without TechNet Enterprise Key) or so claims of that being true.
In the mean time, I would use http://www.team-mediaportal.com.
FYI: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_8_editions - It explains it very clear.
Last thing, since you're on Enterprise, have you tried Windows To Go (Windows "LIVE") to see if you can do it on the bootable?

Unfortunately as Microsoft has said from early summer, only select editions could obtain it/use it. I understand your issue and desire to run something you purchased. When you checking out did it not mention your system wouldn't be compatible?
I am just curious, how come you had to pay for it? I thought till January you are able to obtain WMC for free? Did the offer end early or they screwed everyone and forgot to mention it?

Let's be clear, I have -0- interest in Media Portal, I was a Windows Media Center MVP for 2 years and I have a cablecard tuner in my desktop computer. Windows Media Center is my only option and I am very happy with the feature set I get from it.
I made this thread in "Windows 8 Development and Hacking" for a reason, to see if someone found a way or a HACK to get it installed in this version of Windows 8. I'm sure it's possable but, how ?
It actually says in the documentation that Windows Media Center will not work on Volume License editions.
I'm going to try the retail Pro from MSDN.
I'm interested in this too. I depend on WMC while I'm also interested in using DirectAccess to a domain I have setup on a couple servers in a datacenter. DirectAccess is a enterprise only feature. This version bs really irks me with 8. 7 ultimate gave you everything no limitations. 8 there is no version that doesn't have some limitation.

Just to clear this up you can't add media center to ANY Volume License version of Windows 8. I installed Windows 8 Pro thinking I was all set just to find out that Pro VL has the same limitations that Enterprise does.
No where was it stated by MS that Pro VL wouldn't be able to "add features".
As of now I'm stuck with a crippled version of 8 Pro. It's like Windows 8 Pro "lite" or something.
**edit**
I've found that if you have a retail copy of Windows 8 Pro that your VL MAK key will activate it and then let you add media center to it with no issues.
However if you have already upgraded to Windows 8 Pro VL I can't find any way to install Windows 8 Pro Retail over the top of it while retaining all of your files and settings. I'd love to find a way to do an in place upgrade but I can't figure out a way to do this.
Could someone post a few screen shots of the new Windows Media Center? Just to see what I'm missing out on being a Windows 8 Enterprise user!

Ah, that's okay then! The Windows Media Center for XP/7 isn't really necessary for Windows 8 (except for the DVD playback and TV privileges) because of the built in Music and Video apps. Glad to know!

codec limitation. Install codec pack shark 007 for windows 8 and x64 component. Then run as admin both config program, used the recommend settings. Then, WMP will be able to read anything and will be the default for nearly all video type. Be sure to activate the stream capacity of wmp and enjoy on your xbox.
Although I'm actively trying to get my hand on a retail copy of W8 not vl to check how the install is done and try to see if I can port it to a vl version.
