Nandroid question. - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I may be able to convince my gf to take my Nexus tablet so I can upgrade to the 32gb version. Is there anyway to restore my nandroid from this one to the new one? Or anyway to restore my titanium back up to the new one?

When I changed sd cards in my phone from the 16gb to the 64gb card, I copied my entire sd card to my laptop and then transferred all that data to the new card.
But in this case, I would try to copy over your nandroid to a computer and try that. Or do a synch to dropbox or drive and then resync to the new N7.
It can be done, just gotta figure which would be the best/fastest route.

Yes, you can copy the entire folder "clockworkmod/" to your computer, and then put it back [in the same place] on your new tablet. I'm not sure you can do it in MTP mode, you might have to use "adb pull /sdcard/clockworkmod/ ./clockworkmod/" and then "adb push ./clockworkmod/ /sdcard/" on the new one...
However, only 1 thing comes to mind. I have heard reports that new Nexus 7's preloaded with 4.1.2 were not able to flash a rom unless the rom had been updated somehow to be compatible. I can't remember much more than that.. not sure what ROM you're on [which should be stock 4.1.2, or custom rom]
That being said, to be safe I would recommend instead copying the /sdcard/TitaniumBackup/ folder instead, as I don't see how that method can fail.

I'm running AOKP, build 5. Also using TWRP. I think the titanium back up idea works fine. Thanks guys.

No need to push via adb.
only copy the folder in mtp. it will work without any problem.

Ok well I just said "you may have to use and," I didn't say you had to.. I said this because I mostly use adb, because MTP does not work well on Linux.

I returned* my 16GB this morning. I took a full Titanium Backup and a full TWRP/nandroid then copied everything (most everything at least) from the internal SD to a 32gb microsd via OTG. I don't expect to have much trouble restoring it to the replacement. Already did from first 16gb to second, when screen got weird first time.
Note that TWRP puts the backups in directories that are named to identify the individual device. Not sure what the random-looking name is, but you'll need to figure out the right name for the new unit and move the files or TWRP won't see the backup to restore.
* Screen was getting bad and wal-mart was willing to take it back and refund my money. Intending to replace with a 32 or 32/3g sometime soon.

Titanium should be fine. I will just root the new device, start fresh and restore my apps.

[Q] ClockWorkMode Directory

I am getting new (I guess refurbish) epic since this one wont charge my question is when rooth the new phone should I erase the old directory of the microSD card
or what where the old root is and worked fine. My curent phone I odin back to default before taking it back.
dito33
You shouldnt have to erase anything on your sdcard if your keeping it.If you need to send the old phone back first, just keep the sdcard,I would... And you should Odin phone back to stock if it still has a charge.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Thanks, yes I want to keep it. Is the old root stuff will not interfere with the new since it would open new directory and get confuse since there is already one. I already took back the phone to stock.
dito33
Your sd card isn't rooted lol
All the stuff on there is fine. That's the beauty of an sd card! Its made to move stuff from one electronic to another just incase.
Just throw it in the new epic, root and restore anything from your nandroids!
Then agin, idk if you can restore to different phones...I've never had to lol

yes you can restore to different phones...
my story...
my first epic i rooted and Clockworked it.. make a backup..
used it a month or so played games etc..
phone started to fail to rotate when i turned screen to the side.
sprint said i needed a new phone.
unrooted. got the android ID with a program from the market since i read i needed it for a few things. i was worried about a few games and since that used my android id to identify my for my player states ie. world war and ninjas live.
got a new phone..
used android id changer to change the id of new phone to the old id for my games and etc..
didnt think it worked since world was was starting over..
so i was pissed and was going to reflash over.
went to clockwork and low and behold i saw my old backup from my old phone.
used it to refresh my new phone.
my games picked up where i left off on the old phone.
my android id is the same as my old phone also
Thanks again, I am not sure if I make it clear, my phone start acting and escalated to not charging properly and I am getting new phone. My card contains old root backups and directories from clockworkmod, when rooting the new phone, with root directories there already my concern is if gonna be some problems since the clocworkmod creating new backup (update.zip) directories etc.
dito33
No you're gonna be safe.
Clockwork mod is just gonna use the same directories, if they're not there then it'll create them

I hate having to restore

Does anyone else find it very time consuming to have to reinstall all of your data after every rom wipe? I find my self never leaving a rom for awhile because of the whole set up process including the Google set up.
It takes me an hour.

I suppose Ti is best, but I haven't seen a ics friendly one available on the open seas
Nandroid? I only have 1 one my phone and thats 2.3.3 stock.
They take long to make, then they just sit there wasting space. Its not like you can just go back to them lime nothing, because by that time they'll be outdated.

Titanium is definitely ics friendly. If you have pro (or on free.. idk), set up filters with your must have apps. When you clear data ans flash a new rom, it will verify your TB account and restore settings, including filters. Just toggle the filter and do a batch restore. I was in the same boat you were til I started doing this.
And yes, TB also has a feature to restore apps or data, extracting from a nandroid backup.
•°NS4G • ICS°•
Or you could use es file explorer. Just go to the app manager button on the central screen, by pressing it it shows up all ur apps. Choose which ones you want and back them up. After flashing just restore using file explorer in the same manner...
The apps can also be found on the sdcard under backups/apps.
Astrofile manager does exactly the same job.. your pick.

With Titanium Backup I can be back up and running in about 10 minutes.
Sign into Gmail
Sign into Outlook
Download TB from market
Restore apps and data
Done
Does anyone partition using cmw? I think its possible to some how do that, like save Ti as the drive, so all you have to do is just sign in to Google rather than having to download it.

just save a copy of a TB apk to your SD.
Thats if the custom rom that has a file explorer preloaded. If not has to download also from market
Another annoying thing Google doesn't add to OS besides a restart option is a built in file explorer

Wrong. Even the free one lets you create a flashable zip.
Moreover, you could make it build as a regular update.zip or even make it install as a system app or an user app.

Noob question...flashed phone for first time yesterday and performed a backup using titanium free. When I flash a new rom don't you usually have to wipe data first? Would this not wipe the backup from your phone?
Thanks in advance!
It stores a copy in a folder called TitaniumBackup. If you wipe the SD card (or storage for us) that is different.
It is a hassle having to reinstall an app like Chase that requires a confirmation text. TB (Pro for me) makes restoring login info, etc a snap. Worth the $.

Noob replying to a noob (so pardon me, if i stumble):
When flashing a new ROM, you wipe - system, dalvik cache, data and boot ( perhaps not reqd.) Wiping SD card not required when installing new ROMs, unless it's the first time, and you're putting CWR on a Nexus S... However, some developers do recommending a full SD Card wipe as well. I assume you copy the Titanium backup folders to your PC, and copy it back before restoring.. Haven't tried that yet..
---------- Post added at 11:53 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:49 PM ----------
Probably will have to buy Pro, since it's getting to be a pain to restore my apps, with the permissions for each one...
Somehow, TiBackup doesn't seem to restore my homescreen settings, though I remember reading somewhere that it should do that as well..
Also, learnt the hardway not to try restoring Call logs and Messages when moving from a GB ROM to an ICS ROM... Boot loops with 2 ICS roms (Nexusbeam and Brainmaster's )
So, what all can you restore using TiB with your eyes closed?
I am still new to this phone, but with the Evo we had a zip file that wiped the system, data, cache, etc instead of remembering which ones to wipe. Maybe there is something like that for the Nexus?
I only restore apps, so I am not much help outside of that. With TB Pro all you have to do is click batch and restore all the apps with data automatically while you sit there and wait. I generally restore user apps only, maybe someone else can chime in with advice on restoring settings?
There is also an option to save backups on your drop box account, but I don't.
I am a flashaholic, one of the reasons I bought a used NS4G was because I was bored with the Evo. Titanium Backup (Pro) makes it fast and easy to restore apps and data when flashing new ROMs.

Can't backup my phone? Confused.

Hey guys. So I have unlocked and rooted my Nexus 7 using the root toolkit. All is well, have been running rooted apps etc. I have bought and installed ROM Toolbox Pro in order to backup my tablet (among other things), but it will not allow me to do this. When I go to make a backup of the current ROM (it is stock 4.1.1, unlocked and rooted), I get a warning that states "We failed to connect to ROM Manager".
Seems like I need ClockWorkMod Recovery installed? How do I go about putting this on the tablet? I don't need to start from scratch, i.e. unlocking and rooting all over again do I?
Sorry if this seems like a stupid question. I always managed to install custom ROMs on my Desire HD, I'm just a bit stuck here.
Also, when I persisted with the backup, disregarding the error message, the boot screen was a little dead Android with a red exclamation mark. Holding power button down allowed me to reboot the unit though.
Thanks
EDIT: Just found this guide, which, in the instructions, says to unlock and root first THEN proceed to install CWM. Would I be right to follow this guide?

Hmm I must have done something wrong. Installed CWM Recovery, tried to use ROM Manager to create a backup, it gets like 90% through then says there was an error backing up data. Now when I reboot I'm told that I'm running out of storage space? Before, I had like 2gb free, now 153mb? Have found where the backup files were saved, only ~20mb so that can't be it. Hahah this is neverending

You need to free up more space before you make your backup. Delete the backup folder AND the blobs folder. CWR now uses blobs folder for differential backups.

Making replacement identical to original

Hey guys, so I asked this earlier and didn't get much response but maybe if I'm more specific I will.. I'm getting my replacement N7 tomorrow, and my current one is running MoDaCo jr6 and I want to make the new one exactly like my old with as little risk as possible, so my idea is this :
Root new one and install MoDaCo
Backup ROM on current N7
Place backup on new N7
Go to advanced restore and restore data
then set everything else up manually
Easier: boot into your recovery, make Nandroid backup, copy folder from location (for cwm its on the sd card under the folder clockwork mod. Put that on the new one and restore the backup from there. It will be exactly like your old one.

The new all share app in stock JB rom has option to sync your account with an online storage. use that to sync with your drop box account you will be giving 48GB for 24month. Here is the mail i got from dropbox after sync up. Took 4hr for the email to pop in my mail box.

YMMV, but worth a try. Good luck

Can the apk for the new allshare app be used on a 4.04 based rom (LR9) with PhilZ kernel?
Alternatively, if I make a nandroid backup of my current setup, flash this and register with this rom's version of allshare, and then restore the nandroid backup, will it restore everything - kernel and all?
Thanks!

I wish it had been so easy. I made a android backup in tar format on my sdcard. Notified that it was successful. Proceeded to wipe the device, caches, etc... and then installed the leaked rom, got my Dropbox upgrade, booted back into recovery. When I went to restore, I was informed of an MD5 mismatch. I don't know if this is related to different versions of Cwm (6.0. 1.2 vs. 6.0.1.4) but I am now facing a clean install.
Is there any safe way around the MD5 mismatch?

Well, seeing as my HTC promo upgrade has recently expired for my dropbox account I can answer that one.
No - you will still remain on the free account (or whatever paid level you were at previously) - except you will be blocked from adding more files until you free up enough space until you return to the pre-promo level. So if you were on the free 2gb account before, you will need to remove 48gb worth of files from your account before you can upload files again.
All of your files will be safe and accessible in the meantime - not to mention that you will have an offline copy in your dropbox folder.
Who cares about completing 7 steps. Its better to use sd card. I don't see any use as dropbox is not like sd card, where you first upload than downlod.its time consuming process.

I doubt..AFAIK, you will get the promo only once for a device..I mean, it will be definitely recording your device's IMEI etc etc..so by flashing another ROM, you may not get the promo again..I haven't tested this personally though..
