[Q] Device won't shutdown or reboot - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
Im running SlimBean 2.7 on my device and normally in companion with francos kernel. Earlier this evening I tried another kernel, faux Mainline Edition Max @ 1.4 GHz Quad, GPU @ 512 MHz. The installation went fine and the deviced booted up as it should. I played some Batman for about 30 minutes and had no issues whatsoever.
A few minutes later (after I was done playing) the device freezes. I can still turn on and off the display but it wont react on anything else. So I hard rebooted the device pressing the power button for 7 seconds. When im all booted up I decide to reboot into recovery to revert back to francos kernel and this is when all the spookiness starts.
When I try to reboot (or shutdown) it get stuck at "Device is rebooting/shutting down...", when I try to boot in to recovery with the volume keys pressed down the bootloader starts, but when I choose recovery the device freeze at the Google logo. I then read somewhere to try the same thing with the USB-cable plugged in to the computer, so I tried that. Sadly the bootloader only starts up, but the device won't react to neither pressing the volume keys noir the power button.
Also have tried to reboot in to recovery using the menu in ROM Manager and also in francos kernel downloader app, but same thing happends here, it get stuck while trying to reboot.
Any suggestions on what I should do?

I had same issue and had to finally get adb to get into recovery once in recovery I restored back up and was good from there. It was very weird though.

Adb did the trick, thanks!

Issue with Rooted Nexus

I rooted the Nexus a few days ago and everything was working fine had to do a reboot this evening but all it does now is sit at the Google padlock splash screen and it won't go any further.
I've tried going into the boot loader and running recovery but it just goes back to the Google padlock splash screen.
Is there anything I can do to resolve the problem and try and recover the Nexus or is it bricked?
Any help would be much appreciated.

This is "normal" behavior (the bootloader needs to be fixed). Just hold power until your tablet turns off and then you can turn it back on again. Other methods for accessing recovery still work, like the reboot menu of a custom ROM or an app that can reboot into recovery like Quickboot. If you can't get your tablet to boot correctly though, then while your tablet is connected to your running computer, try to enter recovery from the bootloader and it should boot into recovery.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1766475 <- if u have tried everything on the tablet, and still not working, than this tool will solve ur problem, it install a stock version on it and data will be wiped
hope this help,
cheers

Worked a treat once connected to the USB on my laptop and got into recovery and restored the Nandroid backup, then restored my data and system backup from Sunday with Titanium and was back up and running in half an hour.
Thanks

[Q] Nexus 10 Bricked :/

Hey,
I need some help with my Nexus 10, it's stuck at the moment.
I ran fastboot oem unlock via the Samsung Google Nexus 10 ToolKit 1.3.0 (updated for 4.2.2) and as soon as it was done it rebooted and was stuck...
Booting normally it gets to the bootlogo and just sits there forever, going round and round and round.
If I try to boot into fastboot it shows that it's unlocked but I can't change change to recovery using the volume rocker it's just a solid static screen, only choice is to start which boots back into the normal boot logo.
I have no way to use adb or fastboot... it's just stuck :/ How do I recover/unbrick this?
Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm on the xda-devs irc at the moment and we've got so far... but still its messed up.
- Recovery is dead (can't get into it atm, orange triangle guy every time)
- Flashed stock via fastboot and unrooted, but on reboot I get the triangle guy.
- I can boot into unsecure roms (temporary)
- I can boot into temporary recoverys, clearing cache works but davlik cache and factory reset doesn't work both say "failed"
I'm currently awaiting the guy whos been helping me get back from the shops.
From what I remember you need to either install something or run a command after "oem unlock" for security reasons. Android wont let you boot back into the OS until you have wiped all the data after the unlock.
The orange guy means it's working. There's a button combo to hit at that screen to get the recovery to boot. Once there do a factory reset and your done.
That's why toolkits sick, they teach you nothing and when they break your stuck

Can you flash a factory image to it via fastboot?

The pressing 3 buttons at once; cycling to recovery... method wasnt working because there was no recovery accessable what so ever and temporary recoveries weren't working.
That's what a few guys in IRC said too about the toolkits haha
Thankfully some guy by the name of YellowGTO spent some time helping me out and we finally got there in the end, he's awesome and extremely patient

Okay, updates for everyone just incase someone else gets the problem.
- Factory Images via fastboot flashed fine but never stuck, just kept returning me to triangle dude.
- Fix permissions, did nothing
- Restoring stock recovery did nothing, I still couldn't get to a recovery.
- Temporary recoveries only had limited functionality.
I decided to unlock an already unlocked phone again
I flashed stock, Ran file permissions
Used the temporary recovery to clear the cache/davlik (previously didn't work)
I re-rooted, Installed TWRP 2.4.4.0, this finally stuck.
I double checked that it had stuck by booting the system, rebooting into recovery, powering device of and powering it on to Android. It was all working perfectly.
I then made my backup and put a custom rom and kernel on, it's working lovely now.
It seems that somewhere during the oem unlock it messed up some partitions or something resulting in recoveries and flashing not to work/stick.
Good to hear it's working for you. The issue is that the stock N10 bootloader does not wipe the data partitions correctly as it should. So after an unlock you need to go into the stock recovery and wipe it. Boot once, then go and flash all your flasheys

That's the thing, the recovery wasn't available in any way shape or form and temporary recoveries wouldn't wipe the cache... the oem unlock went wrong somehow even though it had full power, wasn't interrupted or anything.
I'm glad it's all working now, I thought the device was completely dead at one stage.
I think you had the problem almost everyone runs into:
As you can see in the video, you just have to try for a bit to actually get the recovery menu to open - My heart dropped a little before I knew that as well

Stuck on google logo

Hey guys
i just wiped all my data and tried to reboot my nexus, but now it's been stuck on the google logo for ages...
trying to flash to stock + unroot with nexus toolkit doesn't work, any way to unbrick it?
please help...
do you have fastboot driver installed?
Step 1: Power down your Nexus 4 (hold the power button until it shuts off) before rebooting into fastboot mode. You can do this by holding down the the Volume Down and Power buttons simultaneously.
Step 2: Connect your device to your computer. Open up a terminal or command prompt, and navigate to the folder containing the fastboot program.
Step 3: Type fastboot devices into the command line, and you should then see your device’s ID, which means fastboot is setup correctly.
now go back to Nexus 4 toolkit. Flash back to stock.

not booting after flashing something or modding something is the easiest of all to fix, just reflash the rom(gapps and kernel too if need be), no need to wipe anything. since i test all the trinity kernels before any get released, and pre-kernels, i get many that dont boot my device or bootloop(among some other funky behaviors), reflashing a good kernel always works
I left my phone for a few minutes, and when I picked it up it was bootlooped again, and i had to use fastboot again. What should I do now? Maybe a factory reset would help me. I don't want more unexpected bootloops. :/

Try another rom. You might have downloaded corrupted zips. Also, make sure you flash the things you need first. Eg, flash rom and gapps. Don't restore anything if you're using titanium backup. Try restarting the phone, see if it gets into a bootloop. If it doesn't, then try restoring apps from TB. (if you use TB.)
Hi!
I´ve got a big problem. Today i flashed the new PA version, but it seems that the download had some issue. I could install it but after a while, I wanted to reboot the phone and it got stuck at the Google logo. I can only access fastboot mode and recovery.
So the problem is, i made a full wipe, so i have no rom on the sdcard anymore. Also I am now able to enable the debbuging mode. I tried every toolkit i couzld find, but everyone needs debugging mode enabled. windows doesnt recognize the phone ( it says unkown device). So i tried to install the adb drivers, but nothing happens.
i wanted to try to push a rom with adb on the phone but it says no device found. i am such a noob, i hope some can help me.
thx

Not sure if this will work for you, but its worth a try. Attempt holding the power button while its booting up to allow it to turn off (do not let it go when the screen turns black). Then hold volume down and quickly release and re-hold the power button.

The bootloader is the fastboot screen
There you should be able to use ./flash-all.bat (extracted from the stock rom)

[Q] Bootloop

I installed Asphalt 8 on the G2 only to find out the graphics settings only go up to low. I looked for a fix, and found I could get access to high graphics by changing the model in the build.prop file. I think I must've entered another model nuumber for a supported phone wrong somehow, rebooted and now it's in a bootloop with the LG Logo. Can I change the build.prop WITHOUT wiping it and installing a fresh stock ROM? I'm rooted and have TWRP & Busybox.
check the location of build prop then crate a buildprop cwm zip. U can reuse one fron another device. However put in correct buildprop and correct location of this on device in the script, then flash though recovery. It should boot then. Edit it in notepad++ though.

in many threads there speak about how to get into recovery. Go search at least the kernel thread where you got it from

Try holding Power+Volume Up.
If that fails, go to download mode by holding Volume Up while you insert your USB cable. Follow the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476

I fear that during a boot loop there is little you can do.
And, as the battery cannot be removed, you need to wait for the battery to die! Then you power on to TWRP.
Power + Volume Down until the LG logo disappears and appears again. Let go of Power+Vol Down for a moment and press them back again. Should bring you to a white screen asking if you want to factory reset your phone. Press Power button to confirm and it should then bring you to recovery.

I've done something bad to my phone (tried to do a factor reset from within TWRP) and now I'm trying to get out of a boot loop myself... When I do the Power+Down trick to rest, it doesn't safely enter recovery and wait for me to do stuff, it launches some sort of recovery/reset script and reboots into my boot loop again.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I was on stock firmware, rooted, with TWRP 6.3.2.1.

You don't have to wait until your battery dies in order to shut down from a bootloop. If you hold all three buttons down, it will force shut down your phone. Not sure how long you have to hold it, but I believe you hold until after the LG logo disappears for the second time. It worked for me yesterday after I bootlooped my phone when I mistakenly enabled Thermal Daemon Mitigation instead of High Temperature Property in the Hidden Menu (don't ever do that). I'm not rooted, so I'm not sure if the function still works the same, but if you can get into TWRP after the phone is shutdown, then I believe that's the only way to do it.
