I must say, I have been burned by Samsung with the OG Epic (got it for my wife, and EASILY my worst decision, technology-wise), and I vowed never to return. However, Evo LTE vs SG3 is a very debatable decision.

"Personal build choice" is my real decision maker. I really, REALLY like Sense, and Sense 4 is a great improvement. Whenever I upgrade, I will definitely be monitoring my 14 day swap period from Sprint.
I'll keep on reading different posts for different opinions from the developer's point of view. Every one that I know who actually have a SG3 only tell me that "It is nice. I like it."
Seriously...not very helpful.

Honestly I hate flashing on the sg2 only for the sole fact that I don't do it when I'm out of the house because I'm worried I will forget what recovery kernel combo I'm using and emmc brick it, its not as nice to flash on as the evo. But the better screen and dual core processor are what make it great. Its a multimedia power house for me.
My second sg2 arrives tomorrow but I'm still going to rock my og till it dies for good.

So your saying its hard to flash the SG 2?I love my OG,dont get me wrong, this is the best phone i've used by a long shot and i love the wide variety of roms/kernels and mods and its easy to develope on.
And a second question...must you flash different modems according to the rom, just like the Samsung Epic? In my experience with the Epic, modems and recovery images must be flashed using Odin, which means I need a computer. Very annoying, especially when a new rom is acting up, and I'm not at home to use my computer.

So your saying i cant wipe everything and reinstall a nandroid??Unless i'm at home near a computer??If thats the case, then ill stick with my OG.
Unless your using a kernel and recovery from source, its best to Odin to flash just so your safe. I have mixed feelings about Odin. But no don't have to flash a modem, most roms I see come with one.
Its not hard to flash, Odin does some of it for you. You just have to watch what your flashing, if your on a leaked recovery/kernel and you wipe data it factory reset then you can brick your phone. Its mainly going from ics to gb or a different ics. I know they just got a official ics ota a few months back which helps.

Don't get me wrong...Odin makes life very easy. I easily flashed a custom recovery with no preparations at all. However, I NEED a computer. That's my biggest issue. I know that there is a mobile Odin, but the Epic is my wife's phone, and mobile Odin doesn't help if the phone goes bonkers on her.

My wife has the E4GT. I rooted it a couple of weeks ago in about fifteen minutes time. However, you pretty much have to use Odin (or Mobile Odin, which is a paid app from the Play Store) for flashing, etc, and Odin, to me at least, is pretty foreign, having used nothing but HTC devices for nearly three years now. One thing I do like about Samsung is not having to deal with S-on or S-off. The SGS II is a nice phone with lots of potential, though. The screen is bigger and better than the OG, and it's running a 1.2 Ghz dual-core versus the OG's 1 Ghz single-core. The SGS II doesn't come with a SD card but the slot is there should you desire to use a SD card. The camera is also better, as well. Like everything else, though, it all boils down to personal preference.

Ok, so here's a question for everyone. I don't want to litter the forum with yet ANOTHER thread about your options.
I want to upgrade my phone, and I am deciding between an EVO LTE or SG3.
However, my funds are a bit tight...so should I settle for the SG2 or the Galaxy Nexus?

But I will never leave my OG. It's like a part of my body!
sorry for the OT. Here's my answer though : Well if you have the money to get an SG2 well go for it the other people explain it why. :good:

I see the last thread with questions like this was from March, so I just wanted to get the latest about the EPIC...
Are there GPS, wifi, or keyboard issues or these are fixed by one or multiple ROMS available?
Are many devs still working on this device or had it been somewhat abandoned?
is CM7 pretty good without major bugs ?
will the battery last a full day with most ROMs with regular use (i.e. checking email, some web browing, maybe an hour of music streaming, etc)
Netflix works on some ROMs, right?
I have a Hero with CM7 and I like, but amazon still has (and BB just ended yesterday) free EPIC for upgrades, so thinking about getting one. I would get the EVO, but it's still $150 almost anywhere and at that price I would rather pay $200 for the E3D...but from $0 to $200 there's still a big difference
Thanks in advance

The Epic is an excellent device. Pretty much any issue we have has been fixed by the great devs here, but remember that the E3D and GS2 will be available soon. You might wanna wait and see first.

1. No problems with those in almost any ROM.
2. Devs are still around and work is still being done.
3. CM7 is still in Alpha 4 but its being worked on by TeamHacksung.
4. Cant really answer about batter since there are more factors than the ones you mentioned like signal quality in your area. Battery has gotten better though.
5. Yes, Netflix works on some ROMs.
Side note: Hero development was and still is pretty big compared to the Epic, dont expect the same amount of development for it.

Thanks for the answer, but wow, Hero has more development than the Epic? I wouldn't have expected that. I was going to get the Epic from BB yesterday, but the one I went to sold out and the next one only had two and I ran out of time, so I either get it from Amazon or wait for another sale
The Epic is a very awesome device and is adequte for your your eveyday uses on top of mods. The Epic has tons of ROMs, themes, and other customization tools that have been worked on the past few months which made many of them "bug free". The full QWERTY keyboard comes in hand which really makes this device "EPIC".
If you are a real hard core developer and wouldn't mind living without the keyboard then I would recommend the Nexus which is very simular but with monster hardware, like the dual core processor for increased speed and performance. The down fall to these new devices is that there has not been as much development put into them yet, so customization is not as optional compared to the "Epic". The epic is an advance telecommunicational device not a cell phone but unfortunately there are more cell phone users on the sprint network that don't understand the power of the Epic. I hope this clearifies your decision. I hope that you decied to live the "Epic Life".

Nexus S has dual core? Since when?
Also, Hero has more development since it was one of the first Android phones for Sprint, it was one of the nicest ones for its time and it was an HTC phone. Samsung tends to keep away developers. After the Evo came out, a few devs jumped ship to that but there were too many devs to let the phone die. Hell, look at Deca, I was so happy when he said he got an Epic knowing all the stuff he did for the Hero, I still cant wait what he can do for the Epic.

The keyboard was a big factor for me in choosing the Epic over the Evo. I still think I made the right choice, but I *never* use the keyboard. It's just too easy to type with swype. Whenever I ultimately decide to upgrade, it will be to a phone with no keyboard.

If you root it, its a good phone.
GPS Aids is a must, GPS is golden now.
4G only works outside...
The Viper Rom is the best, just use Root Uninstaller to delete the teams bloatware.
Dont overclock (only fun for benches), its not worth the battery lose/glitches.. Just use setcpu to change the governor to Performance.. Alot of games play good with Performance gov. and clocks set to as low as 400 mhz.
Only complaint: No gyro. Dont give me any lines about this! I wanna play Nova with a gyro not a touch screen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I WILL MOVE OVER TO IPHONE JUST FOR THe GYRO, if still no phones/apps on android support it in Nov.
the keyboard is great for using Terminal Em. or punching in passwords. But ya it might not be worth the bulk..

So I'm positive everyone see's this question all the time. But they always judge it on the stock phones. Well I'm looking to get one of these phones, but to ROOT them. Which one do you believe I should get and why? I'm also looking into battery life even though buying an extended battery isn't a problem. Also which rom do you think is best for your pick? Thanks in advance.

And then look at the rom and root options of both. HTC is on a whole nother level.

This. And I own an Epic (my wife has the shift). I'd never trade my Epic in for anything, at least at this point, but yeah the Epic forum is full of complainers, trolls, and guys with tiny wangs (or so I assume with how they have to constantly act like king s**t in the forums all of the time). And shift has a ton more devs, plus working cm7. But the phone itself is sweet, and faster (in my opinion, with the right rom), and has an independent number row. And the screen is bigger and looks nicer. I could go on and on about differences, but I've gotta run for now.

From everything I've heard, the CPU in the shift has the edge on the Epic, but the GPU in the Epic edges out the Shift. If battery life is important to you, I say hands down go with the Shift. I easily get a full day every day and my friend with an epic is always asking people for chargers, even changed all his backgrounds to black to save battery (doesn't save on LCD but on LED it does). He does everything he can and still struggles for a full day out of the thing. Now I speak from what he's told me, I've never owned an Epic myself. Overall I've been thrilled with the shift, does everything I ask of it with no lag and no complaints.

I certainly had this issue on stock rom on the Epic. I couldn't even make it through a work shift without the battery dying. But custom roms on the Epic blow that out of the water. I now can go a whole day of moderate usage and still have around 30-40%. But I don't know, I'm guessing with a custom rom the Shift still kicks the Epic's ass battery-wise. My wife is running CM7 (which the Epic may not see for a looong time), and I don't ever see her reaching for a charger or complaining of the battery. And being of the female variety, she tends to use a lot of the live wallpapers, widgets, etc...

The Shift now comes stock with Gingerbread from Sprint. There is no way to root it. You are SOL. I pulled all of my hair out when I figured this out.
Turns out Android (maybe not "Android", but the current ecosystem) sucks hard. Suckers like you and I come online and see threads and guides about rooting that simply won't ever work on our devices because they've been manufacturer updated. And sites like this don't seem to give a damn -- at least update the root "guide", mods.
Quite worthless. Don't fall for this BS. The Shift is again unrootable, just like almost all updated phones from Sprint. Chances are, with the devs having moved on or got lucky enough to have an old version of Android when they got theirs, all new ones will remain unrootable forever. #@(*$

You need to take a breather my friend. The stock 2.3 will get rooted in time, just like the 2.2 did. "Unrootable forever" is just an ignorant statement. If all you're gonna do is rant and rave a bunch of misinformation, please keep the post to yourself.
Back on topic...
I have a shift and purchased the Epic for my wife.
The Epic display is nicer, and the epic actually feels lighter (and is?) Than my shift. It also has more keys on the keyboard.
However, on stock ROMs my shift seems faster and has better battery life. UI's are a very personal preference, but I much prefer the HTC sense and overall software stack vs Samsung's touchwiz. It just seems to work better.
I've beeen running custom ROMs on my shift and most of them work well. About ready to try a custom ROM on the Epic to see if it works better...

ive been very happy with both my shift and the dev community here (who have turned me from an ignorant n00b-lout into a root-user) and all those who have helped me try and solve my problems.
As for rooting gingersense, it will happen soon enough, just give the devs here some time.
My wife has the Epic and I have the Shift 4G. I can't stand her phone, and she can't stand mine. Tho we both take our phone's off the charger in the morning and when we drive home, mine still is in the green where she has to use the car charger going home. If you google 'phonearena *phone model* specs' you'll be able to see some of the differences between the phones. I was stuck between the Transform and EVO Shift myself a week ago when I picked up my new phone and silly enough the EVO won because HTC shipped it with a word processor app (I'm big into using my phone for rough draft documents). This was the big seller for me since I came from using winmo which always came with a mini version of MS Word.

Coming from a Samsung Moment, I would never buy a Samsung phone product ever again. What a piece of garbage. Plus it sounds like the current Samsung phones still have non working GPS. Stay far away from that junk. Check out the SDX forums for some more Samsung info outside of here.

Yeah my wife had a moment damm that was a effin pos! they should stick to makind displays for tv's and phones and such.lol
EVO Shift all the way. Couple off friends have moments, one has a Transform, and a couple of Epics. All of them are constantly regretting their decisions to buy these phones for one reason or another. More support for the Shift, and development. Plus it's hellua great out of the box. But of course my opinion is biast. It's hard not to be, the Shift is way better.
I chose the shift and I'm liking it so far but now I want to kno wats a good rom for gingerbread and a good kernel to use and wats a good screen protector cuz I might keep it after the months over

If you want completely stock x99's GB rom here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127169
Then MikShifted-G another GB based rom heard nothin but good reviews about this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1150481
The bad news is that HTC hasn't released the source for the kernel used in GB so you won't be able to OC any of these rom's. But MikShiftede is pretty quick from what I've read.I haven't the chance install it yet to give you first hand knowledge.
Alright so how good is the cm 7.0.3.1 for daily use or are the nightlies better to use as a daily driver

You would do better going to that thread and asking there as I haven't tried cm 7 on the shift.

samsung transform does NOT compare to the evo shift!
I just upgraded from the transform to the evo shift and love it!!
I had shift182 rom ext4 on my transform and nothing helped the speed (or should i say lack of) issues.
Evo shift is the way to go, night and day difference!
Hope this helps.

So I just bought the Evo Thursday unaware I can't root the phone. That was the main reason I bought it was to root it, but now it seems im screwed. I need help deciding should I get the Nexus s or keep the Evo, I did some research and the Nexus sounds great and I know it doesn't have a sd slot but it has 16gb built in. Im using a 8gb card and not planning on upgrading. So what should I do I hate a stock phone and most of my apps is for a rooted phone. What would you do?

you should wait until devs find an exploit for evo, its way better than the NS4G
You got 30 days to return it so you could wait, there are some rumors that a few devs are close to getting root on the Evo 4, or just go ahead and take it back. It's really up to you. I liked the Nexus but the fact it didn't have a removable sd card makes me not like it, maybe thats a dumb reason but thats why I didn't like it.

I have both, the NS4G is without a doubt better. There was a issue with the performance of the radio for some people, and that was a major gripe for some people that I think would stop be me from fully recommending but it's a getting updated to Android 2.3.5 with fixes to the radio on Monday.
It's waaaayyy too late to get the EVO 4G. The NS4G is half as old and the tech while slightly better/same (and in the case of the GPU, way more), will get STABLE updates through 2012 I bet. You'll feel a lot better having a NS4G late 2011 - early 2012 guaranteed.
Way better is a little bit of a stretch, but you will be better off with a ROOTED evo. But its anyone's guess when s-off will be achieved with the new h-boot so if you need to be rooted the Nexus is a good choice. I own both phones and I wouldn't keep an unrootable GB evo, no way. I got lucky and scored 2 new in the box s-off evos last weekend so my Nexus is on the nightstand till we get the ota to hopefully fix its only downfall, a horrible radio. Upside of nexus is no workarounds for GPS to work running aosp, it always works and no battery issues that I've experienced. I've tried every GPS driver and fix on my evo and android sytem just kills my battery. If I don't install maps and turn off location and GPS battery life on the evo is as good as the nexus.
Just wanted to chime in since I do own both phones. I'd get a nexus for now and if you don't like it, you will have no problems getting a mint s-off evo down the road.

LOL! Def go with the NSG4g.
http://www.infosyncworld.com/reviews/cell-phones/nexus-s-4g-review/12017.html
My cousin just traded his EvO in for NSG4G.. and he won't look back. Plus its a google phone, its faster, better hardware, and better screen. You have CM7, MIUI, and other custom Roms as well. Just my 2c.

Thanks for the video and reply I love what im hearing because I had a MT4g and all I used was CM7 because I cant stand sense so this is perfect for me. The only real plus I have for the EVO IMO is the screen size and camera but I dont take many pics maybe a couple a month if that so I think I will do the trade in.

Thats was a concern going in was the EVO too old to be buying
FWIW, the Nexus S line is pretty old too, but still younger than the EVO.
My vote is for the Nexus S 4G. You already said you don't like Sense. So it makes 'sense' to just get the NS4G. Like others have said, you have 30 days so you could wait and keep the EVO and hope for root if you are sold on the phones hardware.

Great idea and if/when all is fix I can root because sprint will charge me 35 extra to restock
Here's my two cents.
On topic, Nexus s.
Off topic a bit, if at all possible go with the evo 3d.
It is the 4g with more ram and processor than the nexus s and the 4g. The 4G is a year old and past its prime. The NS is 6months old and not as good as the 3d.
Back on topic for a lower price the NS4G is the way to go.

I owned two Nexus 4g phones and sold them both (returning to my Evo 4G) for the following reasons:
-radio issues = miserable battery life! No joke, 5-6 hours with moderate use. I get twice that time with the Evo 4G. (The new OTA update is supposed to help with WIFI and 4G, NOT 3G, which is where part of the problem lies.
-feels cheap! flimsy, hard, slippery plastic does not feel good in the hand.
-the screen is not better than the Evo 3D. Nexus colors are over saturated, so skin tones are RED, etc. I guess some people like that, but I prefer more accurate colors. And the screen have a green tint.
I suggest you do to a Sprint store and try them out side-by-side. That is the only way to really compare them IMO.
If the ns4g doesn't have synergy then it just isn't cool.

Thanks guys Im going to wait about 25 day to see what develops with the Evo and if nothing I'll have a few days to see whats out there because I see the Photon is due out July 31 and it has a dual processorfor a hundred bucks more....it could be a epic win
I'd grab a nexus s. It'll get software faster than any other phone and its got super amoled screen.

Do not listen to this advice. It couldn't be more bias and wrong. I would say get the nexus s if you like aosp roms. If you want sense then you will need to wait until an exploit is found for root.

I am aware that the devs are hard at work to find a root method for og evo users and they will most likely find one but just out of curiosity what would you do a root wasnt found? Would you get a new phone? What phone would you get would you buy a rooted phone off craigslist?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
yes, if a sprint phone comes out that would be worth upgrading to and has root, I would be inclined to do so.
I wouldn't because its still a excellent phone for everyday usage ..

I ve been looking @ this photon. Not a bad phone and has been rooted. I would switch
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
I know that this question has already been asked before, but I am too lazy to search for the thread.
No, I would not go out of my way to upgrade and/or replace my phone just because it doesn't have root unless an easy way to do so presented itself. I would prefer to have a rooted phone, but since I will likely be waiting for a new generation (i.e. not this current refresh cycle, including the EVO 3D, Photon 4G, etc.) of phones before I do a replacement, any new phone I get will probably not be rooted right away (or if I get an iPhone, the issue becomes moot) so it makes no difference to me.
If I get an Android phone the next go-round, it will almost certainly be an HTC. Aside from the fact that I just like their form factor and think they make quality phones, they seem to have the support of a large portion of the dev community so whatever the FOTM HTC phone is will be what I get.
That Photon looks pretty fancy.
My wife got the photon and it just seems generic to me. All the widgets are plain Jane...I guess I've just grown acustomed to sense..

Which is already confirmed to not currently support the EVO 4G, nor is there a projected timeframe for when it might. Most of us assume it never will, because HTC wants to encourage people to upgrade.
Nope! cuz I waited for a long ass time to get this phone and regardless if there's root or not my phone is still the **** and compared to a blackberry...Mmmhmm Naaw I don't think so I'll die before I go back to that

Nah, I just got this phone at the end of June when Sprint was allowing 2 year upgrade resets. LauncherPro Plus allows me to hide the bloatware in the app drawer, and it runs really smooth for being stock.
If I get bored I could always activate the HTC Touch or Touch Pro, I regret trading in my Moment though; Still quite a bit of development going on with it.

I have actually been honestly taking a hard look at their newest QNX operating system and thinking about whether or not that would be something I could see myself moving towards. I have a BB for work and while it's substandard compared to my EVO (a lot of the reason is that the BES settings for government phones are very restrictive and lock out a lot of features) there are some things that just can't be beat about it. For example, I haven't plugged it in to charge it for three days and it's still got almost 75% of its battery left, and I get a lot of emails and phone calls at work.
I don't know. It would be a hard sell, but I have been thinking about it.

Yeah, my BB is a trooper; been carried around the house by a great dane with no negative impact.
I'm keeping the Evo until I am eligible for an upgrade, or it dies.
If it goes the way of the dodo, I would probably go back to my hero, until the next HTC phone comes out.
I personally would go get a evo3d or epic touch i used to not b into all this rooting and flashing roms but i love trying to find the next new tweak to make my phone more powerful damn you xda!!! damn you!! Haha jk

I think a lot of people on this site don't face the issue you do since they've been active on the site and didn't foolishily upgrade to the latest OTA when it came out.
I think it's safe to say the majority of the people here in the EVO section still have root
