from the article said:
Patent experts said Samsung, whose Galaxy devices have become big challengers to Apple’s iPhone and iPad, stood a good chance of winning a temporary sales ban for Apple’s iPhone 5. “The wireless technology patents are stronger in terms of intellectual property rights than design infringement claims. Without using Samsung’s wireless technology, it’s impossible to make smartphones with mobile telecoms functions,” said a patents lawyer in one of South Korea’s biggest law firms.

Even though I doubt Samsung will win any kind of a suit against Apple, I think it's time a company stood up to them and gave them a taste of the same medicine they have been forcing on everyone else for years. Apple is not the IP police, nor should they file suits for things that vaguely look like their products. If the competitor's "knockoffs" are selling better than Apple's own devices, that's the fault of Apple and not the other company.

Looks like its starting. Samsung has filed with the hauge to stop the sales of iphones and 3g ipads in holland. The way they randomly pick countries to start injunctions is baffling to me.

To modify a quote from history, "I think Apple woke a sleeping lion."
There is at least a possibility that the patent case will be decided against Samsung, so that products that are similar to the iphone, as decided by a judge who seems receptive to Apple arguments, may be removed from the market by Apple.

What do you think that would mean both for the Epic and for future Android phones?

First, a lot of Samsung fans will not switch to Apple, so Apple's profits won't benefit.
Second, if the impact is large enough, Samsung could face financial troubles, which will be passed on to the consumers, at least to some degree.
As a possible third result, Apple will realize that they are a part of that consumer base, when the iPhone components produced by Samsung suddenly become more expensive
This would probably cause iPhone prices to increase, ultimately resulting in Apple screwing themselves

Apple can turn into a squirrel and come get deez nutz
So far the only impact it had was telling me that Epic 4g was the best selling postpaid samsung android phone of all time
Other then that, at worst Samsung is going to receive a fine. I don't think the courts plan to do any form of mass ban due to disruptions it might cause economically.
For one Apple has yet to actually prove damages.
I should clarify, my thoughts are what I consider to be the worst case scenario - the point was that, at worst, Apple will be hurting themselves more than Samsung or end users, because I don't know anyone that has ever said, "Well, they won that frivolous lawsuit, so their product must be better, right?"
Even if Apple succeeded in tanking every Android manufacturer (which will never happen, but if they did...), too many Android fans are also Apple haters - we'd go back to feature phones or older before we cross over to the iDark Side

Isn't this a jury trial? It is too early to tell because samsung has not had a chance to present their defense.
Edit:
Samsung just won a big win,

By excluding these, Apple has to redo their reference material that uses the international SGS models. This makes proving trade dress violation much harder for Apple.

It was always going to go south for Samsung sadly.

More reason to boycott apple for life.
This is outrageous and insanely crazy, 1 billion is way too much for Samsung to pay.
I guess Google and android will be next. i used to like apple and their product but after these series of events, frankly im starting to resent the way they deal with these things and wish that google will blow them sky high.

Don't worry guys, Samsung won't pay a penny.
Everyone knows every feature or design on the iphone has been seen at least once on a different device.
They will appeal, and as stated - A U.S judge & and jury isn't gonna side against Apple.
Apple is god in America, most of their sales are there, here in the UK Apple isn't even the 2nd biggest phone supplier, never mind the first.
Rounded corners
Grid icons
Icon docks
Centre button
Full touchscreen
They have all been done before apple, and the fact they can patent such rubbish shows how biased that country is.
Not to mention the blatant infringements that Apple have, notification bar, dedicated background downloaded, WiFi sync, even their icloud, imap, siri, imessage etc are all copied features from other devices.
Why do I still get the feeling that all suppliers who actually do the creating & innovating are all gonna boycott apple....
Too many manufacturers, too many consumers are for Samsung, Google & Android & I really do believe that the Googarolla case against Apple is 'just the start'
The case means nothing really, was always gonna get an appeal - but it will bring all consumers, manufacturers etc closer together against Apple - no doubt about that. (everyone knew this result before it started, U.S legal system wouldn't do anything differently, the fact apple got away with everything even on clear infringements & copying just shows this)

Apples international market is already destroyed, last figures shown were just 16% global ios share - and U.S was no doubt a big part of that.

This is big problem for Samsung in US, most likely no tw and design changes if Samsung want to sell phones in us from now on.
An appeal is unlikely to succeed, the chance for that to happen is very low.
at least it's not the full 2.45 billion they were looking for.
..on another note- This has nothing to do with the Galaxy S3
I like the idea of Jury trials in principle but this case just how out of touch and self serving the US legal system really is.
Because what the Hell are12 random people expected to know about patent law? and how do you expect 12 people with no legal training to be anything but biased towards Apple when blind dumb patriotism is hammered into Americans as a kid with flags hanging out every window and now those people are expected to judge fairly against this Asian country where most Americans know so little about what's going on outside their own country they'll probably think Samsung is run by Kim Jong-Un.

This verdict (and possible future verdicts against Google) isn't the doom and gloom the media is making it out to be. Worst case scenario is slightly more expensive Android devices because Apple will be forced to license under FRAND. Still sucks though.
Yet another reason why I am never ever buying another Apple product. They have patents over industry standards. Samsung is inevitably using those functionalities - similar to how Apple put their own proprietary skin over Xerox's graphical user interface.
Does anyone know what patents were prove to have been infringing? The radio said they were stupid I.e 4 icons on bottom of home screen and other things that have already been changed in newer versions, of touchwiz and ICS?

Also things such as pinch-zoom and double-tap to zoom. Also the 'bounce' animation.
The ridiculous point is that there is plenty of prior art for most of these touch interface aspects dating back decades before Apple's patents. However, Apple was allowed to patent them relating to capacitive screens only.
The USPTO really are a bunch of imbeciles for awarding some of those patents in the first place. Nothing new there.
My personal hope is with the fact Mr. Jobbs is out forever and for good.
Soon Crapple Ltd. will become only the patent troll and not an R&D pusher.
We should expect their inevetable decline and demise in few years.
This was actually the expected outcome. You think that American juries deciding between finding an American or South Korean company guilty in an American court would go against said American company?
Let's narrow it down even more. Silicon Valley juries in a Silicon Valley court deciding that a Silicon Valley company is guilty? No chance. Just like the South Korean court decided both was guilty, but Apple more than Samsung.
Things like this should be decided in a more neutral zone, methinks. Europe comes to mind, since the verdicts of courts there clearly show no obvious bias at all. Everyone gets to win some and lose some. That should get them talking of licensing rather than litigating.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zd-dqUuvLk4
^ I saw this in another thread, and IMO it's definitely worth watching.
Sure most of it is common sense, but what if the jury watched this video before they made their decision?...
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
actually the whole case seens stupid to me.i do not know any other company which acts stupid as apple about its patents.and many patents seem to be quite stupid.
shall we have round screens now because apple says so?no because apple has a patent for this probably too
europe seems to be a better place for a real decision.
A good read that somewhat confirms my earlier assumptions.
And effects of the verdict doesn't seem to be in Apple's best interest, what with Apple basically admitting that Samsung is the same as Apple...
According to USA Today, Samsung lost the vast majority of the substantial patent violation issues in the CA suit with damages of over $1B awarded to Crapple.
Unfortunately, it looks like Samsung is in pretty deep poo just about now. It won't affect OG Epic users, as we are using EOL hardware. But for those of us considering upgrades it might have some impact. I'm thinking long and hard about buying an SGS3 or any other Sammy product right now. They are going to be a mess for at least a year while all of this patent stuff gets worked out.
Anyone else have thoughts on what kind of impact this might have?

I just want to get a Samsung Captive Glide, switch to Net10/Straight Talk, and call it a day. I have no idea what this means as far as downloading or updating apps or updating the system specs or whatever. But that's all I want until the NEXT powerful Android with a keyboard comes out.
Right now I just have the Epic 4G, and when I get $500 I'll get the Captivate Glide. I hope by then nothing hinky happens when I try to activate then unlock it.
The only effect it will have will be Apple's attempt to go after companies like Motorola & HTC. Pinch-to-Zoom is on every android device, I think and they will most likely use this victory to add fuel to their nuke android campaign.
There will be a lot of change to the android software and a lot of change android phone designs that are rectangular.
And last F*** Apple.

How much different can a phone icon look and still be recognized as a phone icon? Was apple the first company ever to make something rectangular with rounded edges? Were they the first to make a user interface with squares? How can they patent this stuff and sue over it? Its the most generic stuff. Ridiculous. And they sued their largest partner, who makes about 90% of the components in the iPhone/iPad. Apple seems to be done innovating. They take features from Android and then try to make them sound revolutionary. Then, they sue the companies actually innovating and make their products delayed or taken off shelves. The iPhone 1 was revolutionary and really made the smartphone market the way it is today (everyone has one, not just geeks or business people). But they haven't done anything since then. They've made the camera better, screen a bit better, and changed processor.
