Can I change the radio on a CFW? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I am fairly new to modding and would like to ask a quick question that may be simple for some of you.
I have a MT4G "Glacier" and I did some steps found on this forum to root and install a custom firmware on my phone. For the past two weeks, I must have installed about 28 ROMS. Yeah, I know... I have too much free time.
Here is the issue. I have not found a single rom that can do it all. With some roms, my 4G speed don't work. With others, my screen flickers too. The last one I installed, doesn't have sense. No matter what I do, I can't get a rom where my 4G speed works, which I can't live without since I use my phone as hotspot all the time.
The rom that I like the most was [ROM] [ICS] Glacier_One_V_1.3 (9/24/2012) because it has BEATS audio, is based on ICS and it has sense 4.0 which looks and works great. I would love to find one that has all the bells and whistles like this one, but where I can still use my 4G speeds and my screen is not flashing all the time.
I understand that the RADIO is what controls the WIFI, cell signal, etc. Can I update the radio, for one that currently works under Gingerbread into this rom without messing anything up?
If so, how will I go about it and what things do I need to get? Please keep in mind that I already flashed back to stock and I am very comfortable with flashing now, but I don't know much about what goes inside the ROM itself.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Manny

Let me jump in before Jack shreds you for ignorance. The radio IS NOT part of your ROM and has nothing to do with your wifi, gps, the space station or anything other than cell reception (as much as software can). Changing it can be beneficial, but is also dangerous. A failed install means a permanently broken phone. Explain what you mean about not getting 4G.

Appreciate you saving my skin there. Sorry for my ignorance.
What I meam by no 4g speed is, my signal bar on the top right of the phone, almost always reads 4g and get fast browsing speeds on my phone. I can tether my internet to my laptop and it runs great on my stock Ginger.
The moment I go to custom ROM, I can only get 3g and is not just display issues, because the speed is slow based on speedtest.net.
Makes sense now?

Hmm, well, I'm not aware of speed issues on ICS, at least not anymore. However, if you're having issues with it you might try a Gingerbread ROM like Android Revolution HD or Insert Coin.
If you plan on sticking with ICS, you might try the "3G Hacks" in Pimp my ROM. 3G and 4G run off the exact same radio, but a value or two in the ROM may, I repeat MAY, affect the speed. What kind of speed differences are you seeing? Are you comparing these at a similar time of day?
Also, holy crap. You said CFW. I haven't seen that term since my old PSP hacking days. Good times.
Sent from my myTouch 4g using xda app-developers app

I am comparing at relatively the same timed, days and locations. Office versus home, etc.
I will flash againg ICS and test your recommendations. Thanks for your help.

Compare 10 runs back-to-back, same time, same day, same place. That would be a good basis to discuss something.
For all the rest: no ICS ROM will work properly for you. If you want stability - drop to Gingerbread.
About the radio - estallings15 already answered you. You're looking in the wrong places.
"4G" mark on the signal bar means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING on this phone. 4G means something where "4G" stands for "LTE", which is a different set of bands and different transceivers. This phone doesn't have LTE, nor does T-Mobile AFAIK. So it's just an icon. But - make sure you have "H" showing instead on custom ROMs (HSDPA mode). It should show up when the phone starts actively using data.

This makes perfect sense. I really appreciate your prompt response and suggestions.
Back to flashing.

[Q] 4g connection issues

I moved to a new apt about a month ago and have a great 4g signal (sprint is my carrier). For the first three weeks the 4g worked great. Now I will be connected to the 4g signal and streaming a video, playing a game, or doing school work and the connection will just cut out. I will still be connected to the 4g signal and have full bars but have no data connection. I connect to the internet with pdanet or wireless tether (I have tried to use my phone's browser as well when this happens and it also does not have data so I know this is not a pdanet or wireless tether issue). I can turn off the 4g and reconnect with 3g service. I will then turn on 4g again and it will take a good 5 to 10 min before it will reconnect and the process starts over again. I generally can get between 5 and 30 min of connection with 4g before it flakes out.
I could not find this issue on these forums anywhere and have enjoyed reading threads on here, but cannot find this issue posted anywhere so far.
What I have done so far:
1.Restore
2.Reset (installed Azrael's rom with Netarchy's kernel in place of stock sense with unrevoked I had before)
3.Updated prl
4.Updated profile
5.Changed the Wimax sleep mode setting from 10 seconds to 300 seconds. I have not had a chance to test this but do not see this helping considering when it cuts out I am generally in the middle of something so there would be no chance for the connection to time out.
6.Contacted Sprint multiple times and been transfered around and got a confirmation number on a ticket for them to check the 4g signal (still a possibility it is on their end, just want to make sure its nothing on my end)
Are there any other settings or things I can try on my end to verify that it is either on my end or sprints end? I really would like to get this working, it is my primary source of internet and I need it for online classes. I have rooted my phone and do have my msl number so if there are any tweaks I can do with these please let me know.
On a final note thank you to everyone who contributes to these forums. This is one of my first posts here but I have been a regular reader since I got my Evo. I am a huge fan of all the work that the devs and posters put into this site. This is a great resource and I am very grateful for any responses that anyone can provide for me.
From the posts that have read 4g problems almost always are Kernel related... Especially Bfs kernels.
Have you tried any other kernel and duplicated the failure?
Net's 4.3.2 cfs kernels work great with my 004 hardware EVO running MikFroYo 4.4 (IMO the absolute best Rom choice for your EVO.

Honestly I just am getting into the custom rom/kernels. I wanted to be able to overclock and get better battery life out of my phone. I did have unrevoked on there but the issue started while I had unrevoked.
Is MikFroYo a sense based rom? I have hardware version 0003. Do you think that this is a kernel issue? I didn't change kernels until after this issue started.

Yes it is sense based. Lightning fast, VERY stable, with an amazing support forum. Again, I brought up the kernel based on what I have read.
Check out Mik's ROM. I can't imagine using anything else!
I've got the same issue and I'm running mikfroyo 4.4 and even have it on steelrom, both sense-based roms. And I have never used a BRS kernel.
Anybody got any suggestions?

Dial pad & HSPA

Hi guys. Since I have got Cm7 on my MT3g slide I found some issues.
The first is dial pad. Does everybody has the same?
And second in HSPA speed. Before upgrading I had nice and fast speed, but now it doesn't get up than 300kbps.
Does anyone know how to fix that or had the same problems?
I'm not quite sure what the problem is with the dial pad, it looks just fine to me. Can you elaborate a bit?
For your second problem, you might want to check your data cap with your service provider. I know for T-Mobile, their unlimited data plan actually limit how much data you can use at 3G/4G speed before throttling your speed to 2G. Best thing to do is know your limit and keep track of how much data you're using.

I'm currently using Simple mobile and I guess the problem in their service. Today I tried another phone and had the same thing, speed doesn't go up than 300. I tried to speak with CSR and she said that they didn't have any problems with their service and the problem is in my phone XD. This is the last moth when I stay with them and then I'm going back to Tmobile.
In my opinion, the dial pad can look better. I don't like the X right on the dial pad button. There are no borders between buttons or a background. It would be better if the dial pad could be like on the second picture)))
Is there any way to customize or change it? Or ask CyanogenMod developers to do something with it?
Thanks!
I highly doubt the CM guys will do much for this device at this point, it was considered "dead" by quite a bit of devs. However, there are a few dedicated (and talented) devs who stayed with us and keep cranking out awesome roms. I'm not sure if you will like MiUI 4's keypad or ICS's, but they are certainly better (in my opinion) than CM7. I know for sure the Salsa rom and its cousin Espresso Sense SS21 have borders on their keypad, but some people like Sense, some people hate it.
In any case, try out some of the newer roms (but make sure you read what's working and what's not) and see if you like their keypads and other features. If that's too troublesome, look for custom dialers in the Play Store, I'm sure I spotted some nice ones before.

Just today tried both of them.
MiUi is a nice neat rom, but with some issues what i didn't have in CM7. Then I installed CM9 and loved it!
Even though it has lots of problems, I decided to stay with it for now, anyway i can restore my CM7 backup anytime.:good:
p.s. CM9 is much much smoother than MiUi.
Glad to see you've found something you enjoy!

Why am I getting no service when I'm out in the street?

I suspect it's the radio. I keep getting crappy signal apparently with the Panache stock recently. It's taken to a new level now with no service out in the middle of the street. Is there anything I can do than try to switch radios? Even right now, I keep getting switched from 3G to HSPA+.

Radio controls all network communication. Just be careful when changing it. Make sure you verify the md5.

I'll verify the next radio I'll download. I don't know which one though. I was comfy with Panache stock. :/

Radio Issue
I have a MT4G running 4.2.2 on LiquidSmooth and I cant get anything over 3g even in areas where I previously had awesome 4g service (on stock 2.3.4). I checked my md5 and it does not match any other radio/baseband's md5. I'd really like my 4g back but I also don't want to brick my phone. Currently my md5 is showing up as 60de66c8b88d27b9a3bbae385b7f71dc and have yet to find one anywhere to match it. I am fairly new to rooting androids ( I had an iPhone for like 5 years and I just got fed up with the limitations even when it was jailbroken) I read a forum about extracting the radio.img from a stock rom but I was still iffy about the md5 not matching. Absolutely any advice would be great. Thanks in advance (and apologies in advance if I somehow posted this in the wrong place or something)

"4G" and 3G use the same hardware. None, I repeat, NONE of the available radios break "4G." What you're seeing is a difference in the icons used. Whereas the stock GB ROM simply shows "4G" when using HSPA+, the AOSP variants show 3G when idle and switch to H/H+ when data is being used. There is nothing you need to change. It's a gimmick that often evokes a placebo effect.

Thanks for the quick reply and thank you again for clarifying that. But when I ran speed test my download speed is showing around 350kb/s when I usually get around 1.5 mb/s. I recently asked my friends in the area that also have t mobile and they said they've experienced a decent loss in speed/signal just in the past month or so. So is it possible that another baseband might increase my signal strength at least? Because if it's not possible/effective than I feel like I'd be wasting time trying to fix my md5 issue.

If you're worried about the radio, download a different one, verify the md5 ON THAT DOWNLOAD and flash it. Feel free to report the speed difference, if there is one.

[Q] Switching between 3G and H is such an annoyance... Any help?

I've read up on this and understand it is supposed to be normal, but man does it make my phone so much worse. Every single time a page loads it has to switch from 3G to H. My reception seems like it sucks so bad because of this. Sometimes it doesn't switch. I get good bars everywhere I go, but it feels like I have terrible reception.
I've never understood radios and such. I'm rooted with the stock rom. Would this be better if I tried cyanogenmod with a different radio? There has to be a fix for this issue.
If you solve this for me, I'll kiss you through the internet.
I don't think kissing anyone over the internet would make them want to help you any more
Its how the phone works, its supposed to switch to 3G to H. H comes on when data is more active.
What radio are you using?

the bars are for your gsm radio, telephone calls. they dont give you an idea on data speeds. do a speed test to see how good of a data connection you have.

I knew the bars are for phone calls, but I'm in the city of Chicago and have a hard time believing my data is as bad as it seems. I'll have plenty of times where it shows 3G connection and doesn't switch to H, therefore no data comes through. I've had plenty of times where I didn't believe I wasn't getting data, so I reset my phone and sure enough - data!
I do believe something could be wrong with my specific phone. I might need to try a full reset or flash cyanogenmod. I just didn't want to do that. Especially without checking with you genius's beforehand!

The radio is .48.. Baseband is Radio. You can go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2087227 and try out other radio to see if you get better reception.
If you're in a TMO 4G LTE area you can try activating LTE to see if you'd like it any more.

I can do that, but I'll first have to figure out how to do it. For some reason my drivers say they don't work and it won't let me flash clockwork mod. I was going to make another post about it after I figured this out. Do you think radio could be the issue?
Also, I am on Tmobile, but I thought LTE didn't really work since it was ATT band 4 or something and only very specific areas had it?

Well, I just found out my APN was the one used when you are on LTE. I changed it to the non LTE version and will test over the next few days. If that was my problem, I'm going to be upset at the Tmobile lady who put in that info.
Please do let us know if it's any better after using the epc APN.
If you flash to the .33 radio, the LTE will turn on and it's very good at holding a data connection. It's just when it's not available and my phone connects to hspa+. I have similar problems as you. My signal indicator works great and its blue but no internet. I'm wondering if i'll need to keep switching apns. I hope not.

Well, I did my commute this morning and there really was no change. It could be a combination of poor data reception areas and slow switching. I'd like to try to flash a new radio, but I don't know how. I can start a new thread about this, but I'll at least mention my problem here. I installed the Nexus 4 Toolkit and went through all the steps to make sure the drivers were installed correctly and such. I did this a long time ago when I rooted the phone. But something is wrong and it doesn't let me flash clockworkmod. It tells me to go through the steps again, which I have tried.
Is there a way to flash a new radio without clockwordmod?

Lte is amazing in Chicago but not as strong in Chicagoland. However, hspa+ is garbage in Chicago but better in Chicago land.
As for cwm, I prefer twrp. You can just download goo manager from the app store and it will install twrp for you. As far as I know you need to use a custom Rom that supports the older radios or else your calling might mess up. I use aokp.

I actually tried that a few weeks ago, before I knew what I was doing. I wasn't able to flash it because I didn't have a custom recovery. I'm glad I went to CyanogenMod though. It seems to be faster and there are little things that make it better than stock.

Let's you drop out the soft keys and replace them with a pop up slide wheel/etc and has a lot of the AOSP and CM features like the quick notification toggles etc.

Personal Radio Victory

I'm a light user and abuser of my Glacier and just hurtled another simple personal victory. So 2 nights ago my data for 4g stopped working completely, with out any reason or me tinkering with any settings. Last 2 days it's driving me nuts, a couple calls to customer service back and forth about towers, and technicians doing magical work behind the scenes the next 2 days. Yea right...
While looking up how to return my devices to S-on / stock boot loader I start thinking this is BS, leading to the thought of looking up other radios.I have yet do do this as normally my service has been fine, but I surely don't want to send MYglacier (you thought I was going to type touch) to another fool to mess with.
This afternoon I installed::: Radio - 12.62.60.27_26.13.04.19 ::: http://d-h.st/S9t ::: MD5 Sum: 220528cbb349dc2f267b54ca3685c9d2
Fast, quick connection, non-stop. I'm excited. Adb fastboot install took like 1 minutes to install and this entire evening my devices has been money. I am in the North East of the US and will add to this thread how the services is when I return home further North. Anyone who has the stock old radio, drop it, this radio is excellent so far in this region.
I will stress the fact that I read through 20 pages of threads from 2 years ago, just to make sure I understood the background behind what I was doing and why. That is why we, well why we should be here, to learn and to share our learning to make these devices live up to their potential. This isn't anything new, but I know a lot of people are looking for direct answers sometimes on specific things. Well here is one. OP with links is here ::::http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2115197

Slimbean 4.3 by coderzs. I was going back and forth between Carbon, but Carbon gives me a lot of force closes in menu's. I've been waiting to catch a day I can post a bunch of logcats for him but now they are looking at 4.4 or whatever is beyond jb.
Slimbean does everything I need perfectly and is setup up exactly how I always wanted my easy to get to options. I dig the black keyboard with the blue accent buttons. I usually don't even need to navigate past my quick slide down menu. Now with the newer radio, this phone is money. I also picked up a battery from Amazon by the manufacturer Anker, it's a 1550 mAh, I just went 1d 3hours on a single charge using it regularly with 9hours of wifi on.
So far I have experienced better serivce in my home, now that I'm finally back, and also at work. For some reason at my job I would always have full bars, but no connectivity for 4g, now that problem is completetly gone. I'm going to also report back when I head into little to no serivce areas like Vermont / New Hampshire.
