Upgrade to official ICS 4.0.3 - Huawei Ideos X5 U8800

Hello Friends
I myself purchased this cool phone with some serious hardware, and so you'll agree that this phone doesn't deserve a gingerbread. Thankfully, Huawei came out with the official ICS and it is now available for download here
I tried to find a proper tutorial to update to ICS but was facing a problem with the standard method, placing the app in the dload folder of the root sd card, shutting the phone down, removing the battery and then vol+/vol-/Power method.
I however found out an easier method to update, which is explained as below. Note that my phone is working fine, without any hiccups whatsoever.
Also note that I was on official GB 2.3.5, which can be downloaded from here, and installed using the same steps as below. I recommend to be on the latest GB firmware, although I'm not sure if that's the necessary condition.
Another thing is, I tried the below steps and was able to successfully update my phone. Whatever you do is at your own risk. This is a fairly simple and harmless method, but Murphy's Law applies everywhere
Backing up your data is, as usual, recommended.
Steps:
1.Download the ICS update from the link given above.
2. Extract the file. There are 3 folders named step 1, step 2, step 3, each having a folder named dload and each having a update.app file.
3.Open Step 1 and copy the dload folder and paste it in the root directory of the sd card. If you're confused which is the root directory, check this article out. http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20120315022047AAEuZhU
4. Turn off the USB storage.
5.Breathe
6.Go to settings - storage - Software Upgrade - Choose from SD Card.
7.Make sure you have charged your phone sufficiently. and confirm
8. The procedure should take some time, do not panic, and the phone will restart after a while. If it shows 'OK Done' but does not restart, pull out the battery and start the phone normally.
9.Connect the phone to the computer via mount USB Storage again, delete the dload folder. Go to the folder where you extracted the downloaded ICS update file, open Step 2. Copy the dload folder and paste in the root directory of the SD card as before.
10. Repeat the same procedure, as Step 5 and Step 6
11. This step should take a bit longer, so dont panic.
12. After it is successful, the android robot will appear, asking you to sign in and all. You might think this is it, but the procedure is not yet complete. I encountered some bugs here, like force closing of some apps. Hence, the Step 3 update file is important.
13. Again, connect the phone to the computer, mount usb storage, and repeat step 9. Only this time, copy the dload folder of Step 3 and paste in the root directory.
14. Repeat step 6.
15.I didnt get an automatic restart this time, so I pulled the battery out after getting a 'OK message' and put it back in booted the phone. And here you get the official ICS with a taste of Huawei
Sign in, and enjoy.
You can also root your phone for Superuser access, with the help of this article : (Check the root section) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1736650
I'm new here, so if I did anything wrong please feel free to comment or correct me. Thanks!

Yep, but thought this would help many users who would struggle with the other method.

Im curious to know how you posted in the dev section with under 10 posts...

As I said I have no idea where to post this.

This is for u8800 PRO not the u8800. I really hope X5 U8800 non pro users don't follow your advice.

I guess this thread needs to be moved to U8800 pro section...

It was posted in the u8800 section before the mods moved it here.

install system app without recovery

Ever wanted to install a system apparently but to lazy to shutdown to recovery just to reboot back to android becouse you forgot to move the flash file someone else made to the root of the SD card? Yea me too. I can't for the life of me remember where I got this info from so I can't take or give the credit.
Step 1 Get root explorer from the market (Very usefull tool)
step 2 Extract the zip if its in a zip or leave it alone if not.
step 3 Longpress APK. and copy.
step 4 Goto System/app and click R/W at the top of that screen then paste.
step 5 Long click another apk already installed and look at the permissions.
step 6 Long click your new apk and mimick what you saw in the other one.
now just click it and install wig the regular package installer.
In step five you will find that user, group, and others will have read checked and User will have write checked. If you can remember this then skip step 5. I keep it simple and look every time.

Much easier root here

Here's how I did it, hope it works for you. LOTS OF STEPS BUT THEY ARE EASY TO FOLLOW, I HOPE.
1- DOWNLOAD:
<- adb need not be previously setup
2- AFTER YOU DOWNLOAD THE FILE, MAKE A FOLDER IN YOUR DESKTOP AND CALL IT "ROOT" OR ANY NAME YOU WANT. NOW OPEN THE FILE YOU DOWNLOADED AND COPY THE FILES TO THE FOLDER YOU JUST MADE.
3- CLICK LINK OR COPY AND PASTE IT TO YOUR ADDRESS BAR.
ONCE DOWNLOADED OPEN IT AND COPY THE FILE THAT'S IN THERE.
NOW GO TO THE "ROOT" FOLDER YOU MADE ON YOUR DESKTOP AND PASTE IT THERE. IT WILL ASK IF YOU WANT TO REPLACE IT, SAY YES.
4- GO TO YOUR PHONE AND CLICK ON SETTINGS/APPLICATIONS/ DEVELOPEMENT/USB DEBUGGING, PUT A CHECK MARK ON THERE.
WHEN YOU CONNECT TO YOUR PC MAKE SURE THE USB CABLE IS SET TO "CHARGE ONLY"
5- NOW CLICK ON THE FILE YOU LAST COPIED TO THE FOLDER YOU CREATED ON YOUR DESKTOP. THE FILE NAME IS "ROOTER".
ONCE IT'S OPEN CLICK "STEP ONE" AND FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS THERE.
ON STEP ONE IT WILL TAKE A WHILE FOR THE FILES TO PASS TO THE PHONE SO SIT TIGHT.
ONCE IT'S DONE THE PHONE SHOULD RESTART IN THE BOATLOADER. AGAIN, FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE APP.
IF IT DON'T RESTART IN BOOTLOADER DO THE STEP ONCE AGAIN.
6- IF IT ALL WENT GOOD YOUR PHONE WILL BE WIPED CLEAN JUST LIKE WHEN YOU FIRST BOUGHT IT. SKIP ALL THE SETUP STUFF AND CHECK THE USB DEBUGGING ONCE AGAIN ON YOUR PHONE IN SETTINGS....
NOW JUST DO STEP 2. ON STEP TWO YOU WILL GET AN ERROR, JUST CLICK STEP TWO ONCE AGAIN AND YOU WILL BE ALL GOOD. AFTER STEP 2 IS DONE YOUR PHONE WILL NEED TO GO THROUGH SETTING IT UP AGAIN. JUST SKIP ALL SETTINGS, THAN CLICK ON THE
USB DEBUGGING ONCE AGAIN.
ONCE THIS IS DONE DO STEP 3. FOLLOW INSTRUCTION ON THE APP. STEP 3 GOES PRETTY FAST, ONCE YOU SEE AT THE END OF THE APP THESE WORDS ""Flash ClockworkMod Recovery". RESTART YOUR PHONE, YOU MAY HAVE TO RESTART THE PHONE 2-3 TIMES BEFORE YOU CAN SEE "ROM MANAER" IN THE APP DRAWER.
HOPE IT HELPS.
Anyone try this? I may give it a go later when I get home.
I updated the steps, hope it works for you guys. Just make sure you follow the instructions on all the steps in the "rooter.exe" app.
I get my TB today. If someone tries this method please report results.

i agree. if someone trys then i will...im not brave enough. especially if adb doesnt need to be set up.

Updating HBOOT 08x to 1.01.000 on HTC Wildfire (including Rooting & S-OFF)

Hi guys
I just updated my HTC Wildfire from HBOOT version 08… to 1.01.0001 and I ran into many problems on the way. I’m just writing this guide to help out any other people that are in the same situation as me and don’t want to be searching Google for half a day finding solutions to every tiny problem. Please note this worked for me but I cannot guarantee it will work for you so follow this tutorial at your own risk!
Step 1: Find the RUU that has HBOOT 1.01.0001
I used RUU_Buzz_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.22.405.1_Radio_13.55.55.24H_3.35.20.10_release_160191_signed.exe which you can find here.
And more specifically the download link is here (Credits to 3xeno for the RUU list and uploads).
Step 2: Extract the rom.zip from the RUU
There are many ways of extracting rom.zip the method I used is:
1. Run the RUU installer.
2. Go to your windows temporary folder.
3. Search for rom.zip
Another method that will definitely work and you can be sure you have the correct zip file is given here.
Step 3: Create a goldcard (easy way)
I found that flashing the above RUU was impossible without a goldcard and after lots of searching I found a link for downloading the GoldCardTool - a software that automates most of what you have to do and saves you lots of time.
Note: You need to format your SD card so backup anything important and then go to
Settings -> Storage -> Unmount SD Card
Then hit Erase SD card.
Now you are ready to create a Goldcard.
You can download the software here and follow the instructions in the readme file, they are very straight forward.
Step 4: Prepare the ROM for flashing
Rename rom.zip to PC49IMG.zip and place it on your SD card (in the root folder of your SD card ie. No folder within the SD card).
Now reboot your phone into the bootloader. Mine always starts with FASTBOOT in focus and I have to press the power button over BOOTLOADER to get it to scan the SD card for PC49IMG.zip. Once it finds the zip file it will open and parse the file and then ask you if you’d like to update. Press volume up to confirm then DON’T TOUCH ANYTHING.
Once the update is complete reboot the bootloader and make sure the HBOOT is 1.01.0001. Once that is confirmed you can boot into Android.
Step 5: Use AlphaRevx to get S-OFF and Clockwork recovery
Before you use AlphaRevx you will need to make sure you have the correct drivers.
Download the HTC Fastboot drivers which you can get here.
Also download Superuser which you will use later from here and copy this onto your SD card when you find the time!
(Credits for the links go to the guys at unrevoked for their wiki)
Now it’s time to get the Revolutionary software.
Go to http://revolutionary.io/ and download Revolutionary.
Now plug in your phone and make sure USB debugging is on, if it is not then go to Settings -> Applications -> Development and Enable USB debugging.
Now extract and run the Revolutionary software. It should open a command prompt and it will walk you through the installation, the serial number that you give in the website is given in the command prompt (it is not the same as the serial number on the back of your battery!). If you find an error right from the start it probably means you don’t have ADB drivers – Google sdk can help you out with that one. At the end of the installation it gives you the option to download and install Clockwork recovery mod – say yes (Y) to this option!
Step 6: Rooting your phone
Now that Revolutionary is complete you can reboot your phone into Clockwork Recovery. Select install application from zip file. Choose to select the zip file and then find the Superuser zip file that you download earlier (Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed.zip) and install it. If you forgot to put it on DON’T reboot your phone just go to the main menu of Clockwork Recovery. Go to mounts/partitions (I can’t remember the exact name) and at the bottom it says “mount SD card”. Select that and copy the file over to the SD card and then flash it using the directions given above.
Step 7: Flashing a custom ROM (or Fix for if your phone stops on boot screen)
You can either stop at Step 6 or continue to this step and flash a custom ROM.
To do this boot into Clockwork Recovery and do the following:
1. Wipe data
2. Clear cache
3. Clear Dalvik cache in advanced menu
I found that after I flashed a ROM without doing the above 3 steps it got stuck on the boot screen so please do the above 3 steps!
Now flash the ROM by choosing to install from a zip file. Reboot and you’re done!
I updated to Cyanogen mod 2.3.7 and I just want to throw in that Radio_13.55.55.24H_3.35.20.10.zip worked for me !
I really hope this tutorial helped. I just did it with my phone and it’s working well so I wanted to share what I did. Credits go out to everyone that put up tutorials on how to solve problems and all the download links and especially to the guys that wrote Revolutionary – it is an amazing software keep up the good work !
Cheers guys
Kerren
A very thorough guide and many people will benefit from this.
This is nearly exactly the same routine I followed from a guide which I can't remember where from now lol and very grateful help from 3xeno (yoda) but I don't think I did anything with alpharevx though and also I just flashed my cm7 nandroid after revolutionary to gain my superuser and I'm sure the serial part WAS my serial on phone but can't remember exactly.
Anyway my point is that after reading through your post it brought back the memory of the satisfaction of successfully s-offing my phone. great work.
"sent from me2u"
Cool!
Haha thanks man glad I could bring back memories
When it comes to the serial number I'm not completely sure, I had generated a code from the serial on the back of my battery and that didn't work. I then read the serial from command prompt and it seemed a lot shorter (also I got a code that worked ).
Maybe I made a mistake originally but all I know is that you don't have to rip your battery out to get the serial number - they give it to you anyway .
Thanks very much for the reply!
Ah yes that sounds familiar now.

[Q] first time root and flash

ok so there are so meny threads and videos around about rooting and flashing a new rom, my proplem is that i am not an expert, they all give different info, programs to use ect... im a little nervous that i might use the wrong program or miss something and wind up with a brick...
i am using an acer a501 running android v 3.2
so if i understand correctly i need to.....
1.revert back to andriod 3.0.1 (not sure how yet)
2. download iconiaroot1.3, unzip, copy it to sd card (settings set to allow unknown and debug on)
3.install iconiaroot on tablet
4. open and run iconiaroot
5. now rooted
im i correct? did i miss something?
ok assuming all that is correct can i now flash a custom rom?
if so is the process similar? install rom onto sd card and install?
Correct. Just one step more
6. Before installing custom ROM you will need to install Acer Recovery Installer and flash custom recovery.
Root A501
Download a file manager if you don't already have once such as astro file manager or es file explorer. Also download Acer Recovery. Download both of these from the market.
Step 1. To downgrade to 3.0.1 to be able to root first thing you want to do is download this file here
http://depositfiles.com/files/64bo1ivat
Step 2. Once downloaded it copy the update.zip file into the root file of your sd card. the root folder on the sd card is in the tablets internal memory not an external sd card.
Step3. Turn off the tablet and once turned off press and hold the power button and volume down button. Don't release until you see the green andriod with the gears moving.
Step 4. Once tablet has booted back up check to see which version the tablet is running. To Check go to settings....about tablet...and underneath android version make sure the tablet is running 3.0.1
Step 5. If the tablet is running 3.0.1 then download this file.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138228
This is a link to a xda thread that has iconiaroot-1.3.apk.
Step 6. Download iconiaroot-1.3.apk
Step 7. Before opening iconiaroot make sure in settings....applications that unknown sournces is checked then click development and make sure usb debugging is checked.
Step 8. Now open iconia root and hit root.
Step 9. Run acer recovery
Step 10. Select clockworkmod recovery and instal recovery image.
Step 11. Click this link
http://depositfiles.com/files/vwaavz1pa and download TLSS_A501_3.2_Little_Honey.zip
Step 12. Once downloaded you will have 1 zip file. Rename it update.zip and transfer it do the tablets sd card.
Step 13. Turn the tablet off. Then press power and volume down to run cwm.
Step 14. Once at cwm screen use the volume buttons to go up and down. go down and instal from sd card and hit power to select it. Then select apply sdcard/update.zip then select yes and it will instal
Step 15. Once update is done go back and click reboot system now
Step 16 Go to settings about tablet and double check your updated.
Step 17. Have Fun!!!!
Hey I am trying to root my acer, and ive followed all of these directions up until step 11.. The honey.zip file tht is provided isnt installing. Ive tried installing from the internal sd and the external sd with no luck, I think the file itself may be corrupt. Do I NEED to do this update before I can flash a custom rom?
It looks that Honey.zip IS a custom ROM (don't know for sure).
You're rebooting into recovery and trying to install from sdcard?
Are you receiving any errors? What exactly is happening?
Don't bother renaming to update.zip.... Just select "Install zip from sd card" in CWM...
And no, you can use ANY custom rom at that point...
Remember to wipe all data before flashing
cache - dalvik- battery stats -flexrom etc. etc.
Obviously, you should backup your data previously and then you can restore them

In the guide, Method 2,
3) Now download all three update, data, and public files (make sure you rename the files as mentioned above) and copy them either in the external SDCard inside HWOTA folder or in the PC in the C:\..\HWOTA\update folder.
4) Run the update.bat file as an administrator, It will ask you if you copied the files. Press any key to continue.

1. if I copy the 3 files in SD Card, do I put it in /SDCard/HWOTA or /SDCard/HWOTA/Update ? Why the folders are different in sdcard or pc?
2. If I have all the files copied in the SD card, do I run the script directly from the SD card? or I have to put it somewhere on the pc and run it as admin?
- 2. I tried running the update.bat from pc and it works.
