16gb Nexus 7 pausing media, movies music and youtube randomly - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I wonder if anyone can help, this is starting to drive me wild, and has been doing it on and off for some time now
for example I will be sat on the bus listening to music or watching something long on youtube, or even a movie........
and the nexus will suddenly pause the media, without input or movement, just pauses it
this can happen in my pocket, bag or hand.
it mainly happens with music, as thats what i do the most - it could listen to 20 minutes or 20 seconds before pausing again - it is stock and using all of the stock apps
at first i thought it was faulty headphones - so swapped them, but it still happens,
could it be the headphone socket??
any ideas?

This is the very same that happened to me after rooting my n7 except the pause was within 3 to 6 seconds. The only thing that worked was Spotify. I restored and un rooted and ever since it's working.

Seems common amongst Android in general. Did this on my HTC Amaze as well as my GS3. Don't do it often enough to concern me....yet.
Mostly with music, not so much movies.

Bluetooth Speaker Issue (Big Jambox)

I have recently bought a Nexus 7 and discovered that it appears to have problems with its bluetooth connectivity. I often use my Big Jambox to play music over bluetooth from my laptop and smartphone such as Spotify and had zeros issues. However, when using my Nexus 7 with the Jambox it intermittently cuts out on a regular basis, no matter the distance, location, or presence of other interfering bluetooth signals. I originally thought this only happened when the screen turned off on the Nexus 7 but it actually happens all the time.Is the Nexus 7 known for a 'weak' bluetooth, is my specific one likely to be faulty? Has anyone else had any similar issues? Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers.
Edit: I have exchanged the Jambox thinking the issue may have been that. However, the issue still persists with the new one.
Can you describe the "cutout" in greater detail?
Edit:
Just played a 9 minute song with the Nexus in one room and the iHome speaker in another room (50 feet or so).
At the 8 minute mark there was a small instantaneous snap sound. That was all. Overall I feel its very good.
I've been using mine with a Bluetooth receiver hooked up to my home stereo and it's working fine.
No issues with my Bose soundlink, or HTC stereclip I've been paired with.

Looks like its my Nexus 7 then. I'll have to exchange it. Thanks for all the replies.

Are those with working A2DP audio, playing content over WiFi or stuff you've previously downloaded to your N7? I seem only to get problems when WiFi is pumping data. Maybe the current implementation doesn't let Bluetooth and WiFi play nice together?
I, too, have the same problem.
Are you connected to any other Bluetooth connection at the same time? This is the only time I ever have a problem when streaming in the car.
Exchanged my Nexus 7 and the new one works flawlessly. Original must have been faulty.

Hmm, I'm wondering if there is an issue with my nexus 7. I've been complaining on another thread about getting bluetooth mic's working. But I noticed the last few days when I'm at work (I work in a busy downtown core) in certain areas I always get skips/stops in the music. Like it always happens in the same spot. There's one corner near my work that as soon as I approach it I know I'm going to get skips.
I thought maybe it's how I'm holding it, but near my home I can walk with it in either hand, almost swinging it back and forth and I cannot make a skip. But every morning/night going to/from work I can guarantee I'll get skips. This is with wifi off and bluetooth not looking for other devices.
I know bluetooth and wifi share some of the same range, even though I have wifi off, in the area I'm at there are numerous wifi hotspots and providers blanketing the downtown core with accessible wifi. Could this cause an interference issue or do I have a bad device? Besides bluetooth issues my device is flawless and counted myself as one of the lucky ones.

YouTube buffering a lot

Hi,
I noticed on my Nexus 7, YouTube app buffering quite often.
Compared to Galaxy Nexus, on the same network.
Is there anything to improve this?
I am running stock rom and rooted.

I noticed this on both my gnex and N7... dunno why I have a 30Mb line... -_-

i think its a youtube thing. ive noticed on my evo lte, nexus 7, and my ridiculously over powered computer all on a 25meg line that it will only load so far ahead on videos and sometimes end up buffering. up until a month ago ish i would click a video and the whole thing would be loaded in a few seconds
My YouTube app gets stuck buffering constantly. I tried dumping and reinstalling but get the same problem. I remedied it by using a browser. No lag or buffering.

Weird, I don't have any issue with the Youtube app on stock 4.1.2 playing HD Big Buck Bunny in Landscape. How often it stop to buffer, for those with the issue?
The new youtube app suck. When you browsing in portrait mode, you only get one single column for (info, related and comments). The old youtube app 4.0.23 have 3 different tabs for each one.

It stops for good until you click the hd button. It will then start back up in standard definition and freeze again down the line somewhere. I thought I had it fixed by just using the browser but that freezes as well. There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason why because sometimes vids play flawlessly.

I got this too..doesn't matter which video..it all buffer! It seems like the video download is much slower n the YouTube app. I have tried different wireless router s and even set a test one where my N7 is the ONLY device on the network. I have 18mbps line.
Got to the point I stopped using the N7 and just used my Note. Strangely, this issue doesn't happen with my old iPad 2.
I have a strong belief (in my case at least) that the N7 is picky about certain routers... At home my YouTube app is an absolute dog, unusable anytime - thus resorting to the Chrome browser which is ok for non-HD. However, at school and a number of friends houses, it works like a charm. So I've come to that conclusion of something to do with the router compatibility...

If it's the router why do all the other streaming apps work fine? It's YouTube.

Yes, its the YouTube app, all right. Netflix, Hulu, Crackle and others don't buffer.
Just came to say that YouTube on the N7 sucks balls.
YouTube buffers way to much

Necro-bump
Just wanted to necro-bump this and say that it's still a problem (despite tons of app updates since this thread).
Original nexus 7 constantly buffers via the youtube app if HD is selected. If I turn off HD, the video doesn't buffer nearly as much. My network is not the problem; I can watch HD videos on youtube with my computer just fine (no buffering issues). Even SD videos in the youtube app buffer, whereas if I load youtube.com in chrome on my N7 and watch the exact same video in SD as what I was trying to watch in the app, there is zero pausing to buffer (and I can see the buffer bar constantly grows).
I am also of the idea that the tablet is sensitive to router types; I don't know why this is, but wifi reliability on my nexus 7 went down at home after I flashed our router to dd-wrt firmware (all other devices on our home network have been the same). Haven't investigated this further. All router settings seem to be identical as before the flash.
Why I can stream HD videos on netflix (and other apps) just fine on my N7, but youtube chokes...it's a youtube thing--either the app, or something on their backend. It's frustrating as hell, and despite the nice form-factor, I'm regretting getting this nexus 7 as much as I regretted trying the KFHD...lol.

necro-bump as well i guess.
Still a problem running 4.4.4 on my rooted nexus 7 (2012) and latest youtube app. The thing is like 2 days old and I have no other apps installed yet.
The weird thing is that rebooting the device "fixes" the problem for like 5 minutes. After those 5 minutes it goes into super slow mode again and starts buffering at like 1mbit or less for 720p quality. Most of the time it plays 2s, buffers 5s, plays another 2s, buffers 5s again, plays another till I feel the urge to just smash the table into the ground.
It's like it forgets to buffer while playing the content it has already buffered.
Incredibly aggrevating considering this problem is almost 2 years old now and there are multiple google group posts about it, some with 100s of entries. All the replies from google are "alright, thanks for the feedback, we passed it on" or "thanks for the feedback, there is a new update, tell us if it is fixed"...

Bluetooth Impressions

I wanted to get some community feedback on the Bluetooth drivers for this phone.
I've noticed several times that my jawbone icon will "cut out" for 5 to 10 seconds periodically. Doesn't seem to happen at any consistent interval with no consistent trigger. I've tested the same headset with a nexus s, and a blackberry bold 9300. It works fine with the other 2 phones.
I've also seen my Nexus 4 exhibit the same behavior with my car stereo, a clarion CX 501. It acts like it's buffering a song, no audio, but it definitely isn't my network connection because it's doing it with local content and the song doesn't actually pick up where it left off, it clearly just keeps playing on the phone with no Bluetooth output.
It's probably worth noting that it doesn't actually lose the Bluetooth connection, it just stops transmitting out of nowhere. It still stays paired and connected.
Also mostly unrelated... It doesn't seem to hold a Wi-Fi connection very well when Bluetooth is active.
Anyone else seeing similar behavior?

works quite well for me on Stock. Are you using a custom ROM?
No issues here. CM 10.1 with Franco's kernel. Never had issues stock either. Using through Microsoft Sync in my car.

I'm 100% stock. Wondering if it's related to hardware at all. I figured it was software based on the symptoms but if no one else can reproduce it I might start to pursue an RMA

This device has better Bluetooth than stock gs3 and note 3 drivers. It always skips on Bluetooth while playing music with Samsung devices. While in this device, its flawless!

I currently use a LG-HBS700 bluetooth headphones with the N4 and so far, it's been working great, I've noticed its not so much the bluetooth thats the problem, but certain podcast apps that have trouble responding to the bluetooth controls on my headphones. So far, connection has been really good, I used to get occasional dropped connections with these earphones when connected to my iPhone, but no such issues with the Nexus 4.

That's really interesting. Your experience was the opposite of mine. My nexus s was really great with Bluetooth.
I find it interesting that this was moved to the Q&A section... Just because I asked for impressions and people answered doesn't really mean it's a Q&A thread. Hopefully it'll still get enough traffic here to get accurate impressions.

Stock, but rooted and unlocked. BT at first was not stable. Had to pair and unpair all my devices for it to stick. Only had to do that once and from that point bt have been stable. Using Parrot Neo Minikit speakerphone, also my jabra pro 9470 at work, and using the HTC Stereo clip to stream wirelessly via aux port. No issue now.

Thanks for digging those up! That's awesome. Hopefully there will be something in 4.2.2 that corrects this issue. You really brought some hope to me for this phone. Honestly bluetooth was the biggest complaint I had... I can live with the non SAMOLED screen and mediocre battery life... but the bluetooth has been driving me nuts!

[Q] Netflix flicker

When I am streaming a Netflix video the screen jumps/flashes/flickers but only for a millisecond. After a few weeks of enjoying this tablet I finally nailed down what is actually happening. One frame of the video from <minute past, reappears on the screen; just for that millisecond. (I am not using millisecond in its exact technical length.)
Now this may be happening at other times but last evening is when I recognized the frame which I had already seen, reappear within that millisecond; it may be appearing in other venues too but I don't recall such.
Anyone else?
I have the same issue. Very annoying. Combined with the random crashing issue, I'd say that the Nexus needs a few more app/software iterations.
I was having the same issue when I was watching supernatural on it, it scared me for a sec when it did that, as I was watching a scary episode but yeah this only happens with netflix. Because earlier I streamed a cricket match for 8 hours straight on mx video and it was fine.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using xda premium
I watched a lot of Netflix this weekend while traveling (tethered to my phone). Never once did my screen flicker.
I have seen this as well. I wonder if its got something to do with the Netflix app itself because other video apps don't exhibit this phenomenon. Also in stock ROM I never experienced this but I sure am on CM 10.1 M1.

Skipping during bluetooth streaming

I've found when streaming music over bluetooth there will be occasionally skips but only when the Note 3 screen is off. I've fixed the problem temporarily by keep my screen awake.
Anyone else experience this issue? Kinda reminds me of problems some folks experienced with the 2.2.

Google Play Music Stuttering Over Bluetooth
This isn't restricted to Verizon or Galaxy Note 3 devices. I thought it might be mostly Samsung related but I'm seeing this same trend on other mobile devices as well. This is a Google Music issue that is tied in with the Equalizer and Bluetooth. And it's not merely "Skipping", it involves a split-second fluctuation in volume from low back to normal that gives the impression of skipping, hence why I refer to it as "Stuttering" for lack of a better word.
It's driving me insane and making me see why people are always raving about Apple's iPhone. When I had it for over 2 years, there were no issues even remotely related to problems such as these!
i experience this too. drives me insane. i've troubleshooted everything i can, and the phone hardware or OS is all i can blame. can we get some development on this?:crying:
I am having the same issue with my Note 3 but it is happening without using bluetooth. Just playing music and no matter what music player I am using , it is skipping. I am rooted with Alliance ROM. Not sure how to fix this?

But iphone got no freedom of flashing roms. You get the same iOS in every device it's disgusting. With Android we got freedom to do what we want when we want ya somethings break but when the dev breaks one feature he more then likely fixed a few others. work in progress. Couldn't pay this guy to use a crapple.
