I would be pretty much interested in the following: What is your guys experience with the well known lag of the note? After several weeks using a rom the note gets pretty laggy after standby sessions...evertime I unlock my note I have to wait a few seconds, until an app starts. This happened to me with stock & several RocketRoms & Kernels and I found many people sharing these experiences.
Will this change with ICS?

I've been using Chainfire's repack for a couple days and it's sped everything up immensely. There's still the dead minor stutter with scrolling in some apps, but all in all it's definitely a huge change.
I'll probably flash Rocket's 1.5 now that the SMemo is working and has the stock ICS messaging app, but is devoid of most of the bloat.
Gonna see if HW acceleration still brings everything up to snuff with a deodex'd rom, too.

You´ve mentioned the stock messaging app, one more question in this context: I haven´t read anything about the calendar...are we able to use the stock cal as well or am I still bound to the S-Planner (which I kind of dislike in comparison to the beautiful ICS one )? I didn´t give the memo integration in the calendar one single shot, don´t need it (yet)...
I've been using ICS since the chinese leak came out. First I used that and then, when Team Rocket ROM came out, I switched to that and have been using it since.
I also have used ICS CM9 alpha by maui for about a week as a daily driver.
All in all, there is a serious speed boost and everything looks nicer (IMO), yet there are also still bugs. The most notable for me is lack of "use wireless networks" setting for GPS location. At the moment the only GPS app I use is Foursquare (since my car is in service now, so no navigation for a while), and I have troubles locking on to GPS. It takes forever (meaning it takes minutes) and sometimes doesn't lock at all. This is in contrast to CM9 alpha I tried before, which would give me a quite good location in a few seconds.
The calendar is ICS stock, I think.. At least it looks like that.
What I don't really like is that there is no stock "contacts" and "dialer". It's a personal preference, of course, but I really like the ICS original apps, especially contacts and phone, which give you hi-res full-screen pic of the person calling. This one doesn't.
All in all, if I compare GB on Note to ICS on Note, ICS is definitely faster, smoother and generally way better. You have to suffer a few bugs and a few Force Closes here and there, at least for now..
If I compare the new leaked ROM and custom ROMs based on that with the CM9 build by maui, I must say that CM9 definitely would win if it didn't have the current major problems like camera not working and a bit more FCs than on leaked one. CM9 alpha seemed smoother and cleaner, it also had stock AOSP ICS apps and for the GPS issue - CM9 locked on almost instantly (2-10 sec, even indoors), way faster than any ROM on GB I tried, it also seemed to have a bit smoother animations and effects. One notable example would be when pinch-zoom-out is used in browser. If you watch a demo/review of proper ICS (for example, Galaxy Nexus) where you can see pinch-zooming in browser, when you zoom out, the previous full screen stays visible as a block, yet the new zoomed-out portion is not yet visible. When releasing fingers, the non-visible area fades smoothly to readable text. (hard to describe, so just watch a video if you don't understand what I mean). In CM9 Note does this, but in the new leak it doesn't fade - the area just suddenly appears.
To sum it up, I'm not going back to GB anymore, using Team Rocket ROM now but waiting eagerly for a new release of CM9 by maui.

I've tried Chainfire repack and Midnote. I prefer Midnote - it solved a few things like apps update on every reboot, notification bar prompting for updates and the fingerprint changed to N7000 instead of I9220.
Midnote is the choice! Definitely!
Gona start flashing soon! But im gonna wait for a few weeks for a stable ics rom

MidNote definitely. I tried RR 1.4, 1.5 & Midnote and Midnote was smoother by a mile. Stuff just works too. GPS, Bluetooth, Camera, Videorecorder, Market, Dialer, etc. I did make a bunch of mods, removing apps, adding others e.g. video player (instead of second gallery) Titanium backup also works awesomely.
BTW anyone thinking about coming from GB to ICS DO NOT USE CWM TO FLASH AN ICS ROM OR KERNEL. You must use Mobile Odin or PC Odin (careful of PC version it will raise your binary counter & give you triangle) or else you will not obtain complete root, and it will be a headache and a half to reflash backwards then forwards again.

Can you give an example of this? Do you mean games that previously couldn't be installed can now be installed?
Thought I'd update.
I haven't tried MidNote so I can't compare but I've been running RR 1.5 and it's fantastic.
Buttery smooth and everything works as intended. Using ADW EX has never been more enjoyable. Used Titanium to remove a lot that I didn't need as well as restore everything and it works without a hitch. I've had solid performance on Wifi too. Bluetooth does seem a touch fickle but that too could be attributed to a low battery on my MBW-150.
The only issues I've had thus far would be that you can't set a wallpaper with forced HW acceleration on and the resolution is reduced when setting the lockscreen wallpaper for some odd reason. Nothing overly major though.
I might try MidNote if I'm really in the mood, but for now I'm pleased with how it's all set up.
I have been using the imilka's TOM and so far I haven't had any big problems. Of course there are some major and minor bugs to be fixed but the de is working really fast on this rom.

yup i would have to agree with him. this rom is by far the closest we can get to cm9 or stock ics. it does have minor bugs such as usb file transfer and video player, and few extras, but everything else works flawlessly. camera works, all other apps work, faceunlock, etc, very fast and smooth. he has even made a flashable zip that can transform the note into an actual tablet form. he had some bugs in version 1, but he fixed them in version 2 (and i must say, the developer is really fast). although there are fc bugs in tablet form, but i'm sure he's going to fix them in the next day or two.
i tried cm9 for couple of days, but the lack of camera, usb mount, and some others took me off it.
before imilka's rom, i was on romow v1 ics. it worked pretty well. but as its not really full clean aosp ics, i couldn't deal with it. although it is pretty much ics themed, except the dialer, messaging, and contacts. but it is smooth and stable nonetheless. faceunlock works, which is really cool.
all other roms (midnote, rocket, etc) i can't deal with. the themes are all kinda "in your face" and i hate that. not really sure about the smoothness and stability on those so can't really comment on that as i havent flashing them really. (maybe once or twice to see how it is, but quickly restored to original rom)
by the way, i hope the devs don't take offense. a little criticism never hurts, and opinions matter

I used redpill recovery to install midnote - worked great, and I didn't have to mess about with odin.
The step by step instructions in the midnote thread were brilliant.
midnote 2.0 for me is smooth and fast for me, fix some of issue that repack has, weird that they are some minor force close at first few boots after flash, then they are gone later. although fixed at 1.2ghz, it definitely smoother than GB clocked at 1.6ghz... havent tried rocket rom yet, but midnote 2.0 is great for me
Hi everybody! I have some "newbie" questions about CyanogenMod 9...
1. Is it really faster compared to stock ICS? I haven't overclocked the processor and my main problem with ICS, is that the default launcher has a little stuttering some times and it's not absolutely smooth. In CyanogenMod9, the "Trebuchet" launcher is almost at the same level in terms of "movement flow".
I had Nova launcher previously and I'm thinking of installing it again on CyanogenMod 9...will this be a right move?
2. What else is better than the stock ICS there? Ι already use that marvelous power widget inside the notification bar, but, except some similar workflow tweaks, I can't see anything else...any feature list compared to the stock ICS 4.0.4?
3. Why the torch toggle-in-notification is disabled in settings? (the pre-installed torch seem to work perfectly)
4. Screen brightness gets increased when there is a lot of light around, but It doesn't decrease its brightness when I go in a dark room again...Am I doing something wrong? (I haven't touched those sensor filters etc...)
Can you please help me? I'm not a developer and I'm mostly concerned about a smooth and fast experience.

There is no right move. Do whatever it is you want. Your phone won't explode if you install the "wrong" launcher.
2. Take a look at the popular roms in the dev section and repeat #1. Or look at bedalus's benchmarks if you're really that apprehensive.
3. probably hasn't had the bugs worked out.
4. again, maybe a bug. After you flash a couple of roms I'm sure you'll see that you can get #3 and #4 working.
More doing and less thinking. As I said, you have a nandroid to fall back on.

1. If you read carefully my post (sorry for my bad English), you will understand that I already have tried CM9 v6.0 and that was the reason I wanted to know more, because I don't see any performance improvement over stock ICS 4.0.4 on my Nexus S. Am I wrong? There must be some objective reasons except my judgement.
2. I was talking specifically about CM9 features.
3. I figured that with the torch...it's probably not ready yet. I can't find any post about the brightness though (there are so many options there which I don't fully understand and brightness never works as it should).
4. I don't want to flash other roms...I have already flashed Wildestpixel's roms and I didn't see an obvious performance difference too...
For trebuchet if you check (or unchecked I forget) the join with apps setting it makes the launcher just as smooth as gingerbread
Well, I switched from Bugless Beast today to latest CM9 nightly (15.4, not the KalimochoAz version posted on here).
Haven't tried CM9 for a while and it surprised me, speed wise and stuff integrated in it. I'm a fan of stockish ROM's, that's why I used BB since ICS came out. What made me stay is:
- integration of BLN & Voodoo sound, meaning I don't need to run those 2 apps in BG (saves memory ofcourse, I'm a sucker for optimization)
- BigMem is quite noticeable, also RAM free right after clean flash is about 200MB (vs 140MB on AOKP, which is the ****tiest, meaning when I use the apps I have in BG, there was constant launcher restart - low on RAM)
- seems like internal storage speed is faster, I noticed level loading on Where's my water game is perhaps the same as on GB (was waay slower when ICS came out)
- nice UI optional goodies in the ROM but still without AOKP "lets **** everything in" bloat (battery %, power key camera shutter, custom autobrightness levels, T9 dialer). Wanted those on BB, where they were out of question, since BB is more stockish.
- no weird governors, OC or voltages, just ondemand/cfq as on stock, don't use deep idle
So for me, it's a good sweet spot between stock and custom ROM.*

I've used BB for months & AOKP for 2 weeks, both on SimpleKernel, which is basically stock with added BLN&Voodoo. I don't fiddle around with OC/Governors. Those are my observations and I don't intend to debate "why you didn't use "xxkernal v.9302".

Today, I'm trying out the 1200 OC, works completely stable so far, playing with the phone over half an hour now. 1400 rebooted after couple minutes. Try it out !
About brightness decrease, you need to enable it in extra auto-brightness settings at the bottom.

Thanks for the tip! Do you know what actually happens when "system update" detects an update? What is it actually after? An official post 4.0.4 update or a CyanogenMod update? Also, what happens in each situation? Can it be updated OTA?

K, back to stock values, because after some time on 1200 sensors stopped working.
Nope, OTA won't work, the update is for CM I think.

Now the only thing left is search key mod foe recent apps to be modded with cm9 v6 cuz I tried the latest and it wipes out a lot of my options.

Screw benchmarks, usage experience counts and it's not measurable.
Agreed those who actually perform better in bench mark end up being a nuisances. If u want a daily driver stick with cm9 its glitch free.

I'm using CM9. Last rom I tried was AOKP build 32, but I went back to CM9.
Seriously, it's like treacle! I'm about ready to root and install gingerbread.
Dialler takes forever to come up, when I tap the search button it takes many seconds for the keyboard to appear.
No-one else seems to mention this problem?
I have very few apps installed, and certainly no bloatware like task killers, etc.
No, you aren't the only one. Our phone is just a bit too old. All we can do now is bear with it until we upgrade.

Jelly bean is slow as **** for me. I guess most of the people just can't notice that jb's animations and reaction time when touching the screen is just delayed.
I've been frustrated with my nexus not acting fast untill i tried one combination. I'm i9023 user and this combo is just perfect for my phone. No input lag whatsoever, no animation lag, everything is just fast and instantly responsive. Give it a try and tell me what you think.

Use it with apex launcher, because trebuchet may lag when opening app drawer. To avoid dialler lag, i suggest using exdialer, it's downloadable from the market.
Please try that and let me know if I'm the only one who sees the difference
Even the keyboard is just faster than on jb. Scrolling, switching between windows, statusbar is more responsive. Try and tell me what you think.
Sometime I wonder how come poeple say jelly bean is faster than ics. First impressions are good, but after very short time of usage jelly bean is full of slow ****. Every rom based on jb is just slower than this combo.

Nope. No problems here. Phone is fast and stable, although a little struggling with battery life, but like I said before somewhere in these forums, life is full of tradeoffs.
Yes this thing is slow. Its actually kept me from being involved with the phone. I don't add different ROMs or anything anymore because they all feel to heavy for this phone.
I'm just counting down the days until the next Nexus is released.

For all of you who are not happy with the speed of Nexus S, try using this rom -

I can assure it is definitely much faster than the stock ICS or jellybean ROMs. If you have been using the stock Nexus S ROMS, you will see noticeable difference in the colours. They are much better on this Xperia ROM and does not have that yellow shade. I love the ROM and believe me I have tried almost every ROM available on XDA for for Nexus S.
Though there are 2 issues, for which I haven't found any solution, it blocks the calls coming from unknown numbers and you do not even see a missed call. And you can't use the default screen locks. But apart from these, the ROM is rock solid, never crashes or hangs, everything works fine and it is ultra smooth.
If you think your phone is running slow, I highly recommend this ROM. Everyone should give this ROM at least a try.

I don't really notice a difference speedwise between ICS and JB. They are both a little slower than GB was, but not unbearable. The added features of ICS/JB are well worth it IMO.
Overclocking a little bit can help, although it can hurt battery performance a bit.

Agreed. Current combo keeps up with wife's combo. Don't know what the OP is talking about. See sig for both setups.
I agree with jellybean being kinda slow. However, i dont know if it's just the rom's were installing on our device, cause i kinda remember stock JB being pretty fluid which is kinda making wanna go back to stock again
GB was stale, solid, and best battery life.
I miss having a flashlight app that worked and better battery life.
ICS and JB have been ok up until I started having power button issues last week.
JRO03L update seems to have fixed the majority of freezes, crashes, and power button issue.
After the reality has set in, I would have stick with GB
no problems here. aokp jb build 2 and beladus marmite 4.4 kernel combo is running smooth on mine.

Are you implying that every end-user of android phones should learn to root or install custom roms/kernel to get a DECENT experience? While I'm content to see Google supporting a device almost 2 years after its release (Apple does that as well btw), I'm kind of feeling disgusted about the overall user experience, laggyness, crashes, random reboots and decreased battery life. I wish Google released a FINISHED product/operating system and not leave its customers in a sort of beta-testing fog.
I'd suggest backing up your data and wipe your whole device like a madman. Format.
And start from scratch with the rom of your choice

Memory management is the problem...
I think the problem has to do with the way memory is managed in ICS/JB... I still can't find found a recent ROM that will keep the launcher in memory no matter what. That's terrible for user experience! None of the task or memory manager apps in the Google Play Store seem to help either.

^ this. I was having a bad experience with JB as well until I formatted my sdcard. And I'm not talking about wiping from CWM. I'm talking about mounting it as USB storage and formatting from a PC.

Let me start off by saying - I have never rooted or installed any custom roms or whatever on my phone. The reason is that I just wanted a phone and not play around with it anymore (playing around = more can break).
Since my SGS3 notified me about the JB update and I installed it via OTA i literally started hating my phone. Here are multiple reasons why:
WiFi does not work. I have the same N-router I had before JB and since then my phone couldn't log in to my WiFi network - always stuck on "authenticating". I then configured the phone to use a static IP and not DHCP and it can connect successfully to my network - but I have NO internet connection. I now my router is fine because it used to work great before and my Nexus 7 as well as ALL other devices work without a problem. I refuse to downgrade my routers speed to B- or G-speed.
Google Calendar won't sync. Under Sync -> Google, for more than a week it says "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly.". Mail and Contacts etc. sync just fine. Calendar on my Nexus 7 syncs fine too. ****ing annoying to not have your appointments visible.

F*cking hot! Using it to text someone real quick - the phone gets really hot at the bottom. What the F is up with that? I'm not playing a game or watching a movie or whatnot. 1 minute of WhatsApp makes my phone go toast. On ICS i had to really push the phone to become hot.

And what if after resetting the phone the WiFi still doesn't work - am I supposed to use my mobile data to download all those apps (Google Search is like 10 MB, other apps are no little fly either). It adds up (time + money).
That Google Nexus 4 is starting too look really good right about now. But I'd rather keep my Samsung. Although I'm probably NOT gonna buy any Samsung phone again any time soon.
You are just bad luck for been updated with faulty firmware.

I don't know if I'd agree with all the issues you're having, but is have to agree with you on the fact that Sammy jellybean for the s3 is not really that good...I've tried all of them including stock odexed and deodexed, wanam, insertcoin, omega, etc etc... they're all great roms, but the base is still Sammy jellybean, and battery life sucks when compared to ics. Also, app performance is better on ics based Roms. The buttery smoothness also lasts for only some time after boot and gradually the UI status stuttering, as do the launchers, whether touchwiz or third party... probably the reason why I'm still on an ics Rom.

Thanks for the valuable info mate. Is there no alternative for us to use jellybean?? Will AOKP/AOSP or Cyanogen Roms help?? I am on Jellybean base currently. ICS was a lot better

AOSP based Roms are definitely good options to official Sammy jellybean, but the problems are with closed source drivers etc that are not available to AOSP Roms. So stuff like tethering, camera, etc will never be as good as the official firmware...
Best thing is for Sammy to develop a jellybean update with these issues fixed... till then I guess you should stick to AOSP/AOKP for a better jellybean experience.

That's why I have dual boot. Paranoid as primary for performance; smoothness (and only 160 MB to download !! plus google apps), and a Sammy ROM as secondary for tethering when I need it.

Let's wait for a wile... Sammy promised to public some sorces. Will see in just a week what it will be.
Bad side - most good programmers left developing cm10 for sgs3...
So not many who will be able pick up the cm10 flag and rise it again even if Sammy will public sources..
I had the same problem until yesterday, when i decided to factory reset my phone. Used TitaniumBackup and took about 2 hours to restore everything :|
Now it's much much better. I had to restart my phone about 2~3 times a day before. I haven't since resetting.

I returned to stock rom because it has a better battery life than wanam his. But i love it. I dont have any problems you mentioned. I wish the best for you and I hope you full whipe and flash again. This would propably fix all your problems.
Also to people who are restoring apps with TB, i stopped this method because I am convinced it does more harm to the rom than good

To each his own I guess... but I believe the battery is much worse on jellybean as compared to ics on Sammy Roms...and apps behave much better on ics too.
As far as project butter is concerned, UI smoothness is nowhere near what jellybean promised at release... still stutters badly at times... ics feels more at home on the s3, at least with the current lot of jellybean releases by Sammy

Me too... Went from great phone to hate phone. JB just brought me more STOP errors. Even gallery now stops 1-2 times a week.
I hate the grey topbar. I have a bug that when i exit an app, i can see the shadows in the icons slowly returning back instead of beeing instant in ICS.
The phone is also slower. Project butter is just not there. It's like samsung took that out...

Happened to me when I had my Galaxy Note. Did an ICS OTA update and everything went wrong.
Now, I'm using S3, I am now using custom ROM and happy about it, faster and lighter with no problem at all.

Restoring from TB is just a personal weirdness, I have the idea that pushing all that data into /system sometimes corrupts. I prefer a clean install from Play.
Also i have seen dozensbof people restoring ICS apps and data and complaining the Rom is bad. Thats why I prefer people not too.

Either root and install a custom rom or wipe data and setup from scratch.
Every now and then software can and will be broken by an update, it doesnt matter if its samsung/android, windows, or even ios - updating can go wrong. Go ahead and get a nexus, even though the chance is slim its possible that the same thing happens when the next update is pushed out.
Im not defending samsung at all, obviously it sucks having to wipe data to fix the problem, but in the end it will solve it - as well as rooting and installing a custom rom will.

2- s-memo and stock browser eat battery disable them.
those two should fix most of ur problems if they dont it's a app u installed.

I have noticed that my phone has become quite slow. My Nexus S is a contract phone and I think I have had it for almost 2 years. When i first got it - it felt snappy. Around that time, I did things like install kernals, custom roms, bootloader unlock etc. Then I went back to the stock rom.
I dont mind wiping the memory etc. As long as the important stuff is backed up like messages and contacts - everything else can go. I can reinstall when needed. So my question is - what do I have to do to regain the performance. Should I do a full reinstall? or install a custom ROM? or should I get a new phone (my contract ends this month)

well, if you get the possibility, I would definitely go for an different phone. I don't know your budget, but I would go for a quad(/dual)-core phone, as mobile software seems to become heavier on a faster pace than before. I advise you this, because else your next phone will feel like your nexus s after two years, but than in one year. Of course this is just a prediction, so do whatever you wish to do

I also recommend this combination if you just want preformance. :good:
However, in my opinion, ROM performance is device dependent. What's fast for another may/may not be fast on your device. So be sure to try them all when you got time

Well yeah, but the fact that person A gets 4.5 hours on screen time with the same ROM/kernel and exact same settings won't mean you will also get 4.5 hours on screen time. The same goes for smoothness.
A question like "what's the fastest ROM/kernel combination" is very difficult to answer. But I think you can't go wrong with the rasbeanjelly/marmite combination. I suggest you make a NAND backup and try the compilation I posted to see for yourself.
I've been troubled by this issue of gradual performance degradation in android custom Rom/kernels ever since I came to android from a non-smart phone. I've asked about it before, but nobody really had a good answer for exactly why it was happening. It is likely related to something in custom kernels though, that's my gut feeling. The more reboots and freezes I'd get, the worse the system would run. Like you said, starting over from scratch always helps, but it really sucks having to do this regularly. My search for long term stability has brought me to cm 10.0 stable. I use the stock kernel, and don't mess around to much with advanced or performance settings. You won't get nearly the performance or battery life of other configs, but I've found the system runs just as smooth on day 60 as day 1. I actually have come back from a galaxy nexus to my ns4g cause of how useable the phone is, and how much I like the smaller size. So I disagree with the earlier poster who said to look for a new phone. I think you can definitely use this phone till the next android is version comes out, provided you don't use a lot of resource intensive apps.

Its not that money is an issue, but the problem is that if I do get a new contract I will be stuck in that for atleast 2 years with any new smartphone. The thing is that the nexus S is perfectly fine for my mobile needs. I just wish it could be a little snappier, as one of you have said already when getting a new phone its much better to get one that can be with you for 2 or more years - therefore it makes sense to get a good one. I will most likely wait for the new phone from samsung that uses the ARM big.LITTLE chip.
I just checked my phone and it seems I must have relock'd it when putting the stockrom on. I have not done this custom rom stuff in a while, not sure if the scene has changed much. Is the rooting process using adb recommended for mac's?
If you have many apps installed, it can be a quick performace boost if you uninstall all the apps you don't use or don't need. Keep the apps you use regularly, delete those you don't remember when was the last time you used them. I had some games and utilities which I froze in Titanium Backup (same as uninstalling except you don't lose any data and it can be reverted with one tap), since then my phone feels as new.

I think the rasbeanjellybuild MDO on 4.1.2 is faster. 4.2 was very laggy on my device. There are not so many functions in this rom. But that's my opinion. Kernel: marmite of course and the tweaks from brainmaster are for smoothness very well too.

I was in a similar position, except for the contract. I wiped everything, installed CM10 stable and uninstalled a couple dozen apps I was not using. Performance is ok again. Some battery issues, but I hope that with a new battery I can have the phone for some more time.

I'm running Jellyshot with marmite 7.2.1 at 1.3GHz OC.
For me it's the perfect Rom / Kernel combo. The setup is pretty stable, incredibly fast and I got around 2-3 hours battery time, which is about as much as twice as stock.
I personally wait for the next Nexus device, because even today my nexus S with this setup can compare to 80 % of the smartphones in my vicinity.

I'm not really attached to my apps and data. The only thing I hate is asking everyone for their Wi-Fi passwords again. But I could easily back them up. I just don't because I'm lazy. If you want, you can back up pretty much anything with Titanium Backup.
My process? I first download everything I'm going to flash, throw it all in some folder on my sd card (most of the time I just keep it in the download folder). Then I don't make a NAND backup. That's right. #YOLO. No, just kidding. Like I said, not really attached to any setup at all. If I flash a new ROM, that means I don't care about my previous setup at all. But a NAND backup doesn't really take that long, and it's really easy to restore, so I would just do it if I were you.
I always restart after flashing. If I have to flash 5 things, I restart 5 times. Don't know if this helps, but someone taught me this once, and I've been doing it ever since. After I've flashed everything, I connect to Wi-Fi, download one or two apps I frequently use (whatsapp, my favourite browser), and then that's it. All other apps I download only when I need them.
i downgraded from 4.2.1 to apex 4.0.4
Now i have more then 170 mb ram free with most of my apps open!!!
with matr1x kernel cfs it seems to be great at gaming
I'm a little surprised to see so many NS users complaining about poor performance on 4.2.1. A lot of people seem to have become convinced that a single core cpu isn't enough to handle Android smoothly anymore, but I think they're just yearning for unachievable WP levels of UI sheen or they're flashing the wrong zips.
bed's Marmite kernel has been so well-optimized since its 7.1.6 incarnation that even a dirty-flashed ROM laden with 200+ apps feels usable. Having said that, it really does help to do things as cleanly as possible: full wipe, manual format of system and data, wipe cache and dalvik, reboot recovery; flash your ROM, flash gapps, and flash your chosen kernel once only (resist experimenting with different versions), then fix permissions.
For about the past week and a half I've been using tchaari's 4.2.1 build of Slimbean + Marmite 7.1.7, without an overclock, and it's remained consistently smooth and responsive well beyond 100 hours of uptime.
One thing which has in the past slowed my phone to a crawl is the SD card. There are some flaky versions of ClockworkMod which will leave corrupt blocks on the external storage after creating a NANDroid backup - Media Scanner hates this and so do the apps living on your SD. I've experienced this a couple of times and reformatting the SD is the only way to restore performance. Not sure if people are still suffering from this without realising the cause, but I now refrain from making NANDroids and just rely on Titanium Backup and everything seems to run smoothly.
Anyway, install Slimbean, flash Marmite 7.1.7 (or try out 7.3), and don't for one instant consider purchasing a fragile Nexus 4 or any other oversized power hungry droid.
