As seen here a video by whitehawkx: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szyp00_EvSU
The SSG2 Epic 4G Touch has proper CRT off/on capability. Not a white screen flash; it actually warps and colour separates the screen before performing a vertical compression. The ROM seen in the video has enabled the CRT features using the same functionality that JKay provides for us on the non-4G version.
When we enable it on our phones, we get a full white screen and then vertical compression only.
I copied the surfaceflinger modules from a stock Epic 4G ROM to a KK5 ROM, and CRT on and off performs the vertical compression on an INVERTED IMAGE. I suppose this is something to do with hardware differences between the devices but I am unsure how to investigate this further.
Any thoughts?
I've attached a cwm update that replaces the libsurfaceflinger modules in /system/lib. This will require root and clockworkmod recovery. I applied this to CheckROM RevoHD v4 (KK5 2.3.6), but I expect it to work for most current rooted ROMs. Please perform a full backup from recovery before you apply.
Looks like this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362354, is on the same track. The live screen rotation is also enabled. I checked the Epic 4G libsurfaceflinger modules and it seem they are of the exact same size as the ones taken from the Galaxy Note in that thread. I guess they are the same modules used. Doesn't really help though does it
Could you please perhaps create a zip to restore the files as they were? Seems far more sensible than restoring a full backup from 5mins before

Ive flashed that fancy screen rotation and it works like a charm i dont know why people are having issuea. Works 100% here. I might try flash this crt if it will be as smooth as the video u posted .
looks like an iphone but powered by android baby!!!!
I have got the fancy screen rotator also installed. Can confirm it works well. Am on kk2.
Waiting or this also to be integrated. The solutions now are not really good.

If you look closely, when you turn off the screen, it will flip vertically first. The rotation effect is great, but we are looking for a perfectly working CRT effect that doesn't flip vertically.
The other thread about the 'rotation mod' is simply the same as what I have done here as the functionality for the rotation is in the same files at the CRT effect, except they have copied the two files from the Galaxy Note. I have copied them from the Epic 4G Touch, but it seems they are the same as the files from the Galaxy Note.
I was thinking about making such a thread. Nice, I totally agree. Looks like we are very close to fixing that CRT animation for good.
The Epic 4G Touch also has a Exynos processor right? The only difference is a larger screen. Why would it work good with that device and not with the S II?
Nice to bring this into the light.
Please some developers fix the mirrored CRT
It isn't that bad, it's more decent than the one in CM anyway
Great

Thank you for this mod, its far better to the standard crt effect. I'm on Rarity ROM 4.0 but looking to flash a newer ROM!
hey,
def. make a nandroid backup before trying this.
when i copied the files over via root explorer OR flashed it via CWM my phone stuck at the SGS2 screen. could easily ressurrect it via odin...still annoying.
I have already made a proper fix for CRT-off animation. It's already merged in TeamHacksung's ICS repos, and I submitted it also to gerrit for GB/CM7.

I think we should stick to a Samsung based ROM here, are you using a Sammy ROM? KI, KJ, KK, or is it CM7 based?
If you are on KK5 that's strange, but don't worry I've definitely seen that before. I have a feeling that on this device, older CWM versions handle the updater-script differently, and don't automatically set file permissions on files that were copied, or they don't mount the system partition properly. As far as using root explorer goes, that worked for me but I had to make sure that I applied rw-r--r-- permissions to both libsurfaceflinger.so and libsurfaceflinger_client.so after you copy them to /system/lib.

I tried creating an updater-script that backs up the current files to the sdcard and another that restores them using busybox commands, (just for fun), but it didn't work properly. Anyone had success with this?
Anyway, I have attached a cwm update that installs the original files from the XWKK5 2.3.6 build. See attachment below.

Awesome, so any chance this could be built into a Samsung based ROM, or does it only apply to Cyanogen? It would be awesome to get this working on our sammy custom ROMs before the forums get swamped by AOSP ICS hype

You need root to write to /system, so you would need to flash a kernel that gives you root. So a rooted stock ROM, yes, but not an untouched stock ROM.

Sorry by untouched I meant that it hasn't been modified by flashing. Yes it should work with KK2.
Please do a full backup first in cwm recovery in case you can't boot. See this great guide - 5. ClockWorkMod - How to Backup/NANDroid (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125282)
I've messed about with the bootanimation source code and it now shows full screen, however it is still stretched out, but the boot anim looks much nicer full screen.
Flash the attached in ClockworkMod if you want it. Disable check for signed zips, as it's not signed. Should work in Alpha0 and Alpha0.5
v0.3
- Force full screen and use all of texture
- Checked with other bootanimations for correct orientation
v0.2
- Animation rotated to look less squashed
- Flashable in CWM
- Download changed source code (/frameworks/base/cmds/bootanimation)
v0.1
- Make boot animation full screen
- Hard coded values ( )

This is NOT a bootanimation.zip replacement, it replaces the /system/bin/bootanimation binary.
Please try flashing in clockworkmod again, I've updated the file so it works.
flashed the 0.2 version via cwm and it worked flawlessly. Thanks!
Thanks! It looks much better now.
Flashed no problem. Looks great - thanks!
I have wondered why Dalingrin didn't fix it before releasing the first alpha.
As a side note, the boot animation is hardware accelerated using OpenGL ES, you could actually do some real 3D stuff when it boots, but it'll probably make the boot longer.

Hello!
Since there is a fully working CM7 for Bravo (thanks Quarkx), does anyone know how can I port an existing ROM from Defy (example: WhiteRabbit 1.3 which is based on CM7)?
Anyways, here is the link of TweetyPeety's ROM: WhiteRabbit 1.3
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1510063
Thanks!
When I port Defy roms, I start by replacing the radio files with the ones that BravoMotorola posted in an earlier thread, adding in Quarx's camera libraries, editing media_profiles.xml, and editing the build.prop. There are a few apps included with some Defy roms, like Torch and Rom Updater, that are completely incompatible with the Bravo, and they need to be removed (or never used...).
I've attached a CWM compatible zip that removes the Defy radio, Defy camera libraries, Torch, Rom Updater, media_profiles.xml, and build.prop and replaces them with BravoMotorola's radio, Quarx's camera libraries, updated media_profiles.xml, and a CM72 compatible build.prop. I've tested this with various Quarx, Epsylon3, and Maniac103 CM7 nightlies and always had success.
If you want to use this for other Defy roms (not CM7 based) either remove or edit the build.prop accordingly and check\modify the updater-script to ensure it's compatible with the rom you want to use. By modify the updater-script, I mean to either add or remove apk's or libraries your custom rom may or may not have.
The libraries included are for Gingerbread roms and won't work on Froyo or ICS. Don't bother trying cause you'll bootloop at best, flash the sbf at worst. If anyone is interested, I can make a similar patch for Froyo roms, and an ICS patch for radio and apn settings. And don't bother asking about ICS camera, I've tried many, many, many library combos and no camera or bootloop. Your best bet on ICS camera is to donate to Quarx.
Install the included zip AFTER installing your rom.
Good luck on your Defy rom porting.

I've been using the White Rabbit 1.3 rom for the past 6 hours or so and have really been enjoying it. It does have a few issues though. The apn settings for att are incorrect so it won't connect (same as CM9) and I can't get usb tethering to work at all. At first, the phone recognizes usb as being connected, then when you enable, it instantly disables and the phone will bootloop every 5 minutes or so. Not really bootloop, but it does reset to the boot screen. It really sucks because this is a good rom I'd like to use but usb tethering is a must for me. Other than the tethering issue, this seemed to be stable rom and its worth trying it out.
I've included a patch to fix the camera, apn problems, and an edited build.prop. Install the rom as usuall, reboot to change to 2nd_boot, go to recovery and install the bravopatch-whiterabbit1.3.zip.
Does anybody know which program controls usb tethering? I suspect usb.apk but I'm not sure. Since I haven't had any problems whatsoever with Epsylon3's 20120212 nightly, I'll try using it's usb.apk and hope it works.
I tried upb.apk and usbd from 20120212 with no success, but it did stop the bootloop issue. I also noticed that this rom was based on KANG 20.02. I've never used or ported a KANG rom, so maybe the tethering issue is kang specific? I'll flash a kang rom tomorrow to check.

work full..
Edit
3g and Usb Tethering don't work. My apologies on that. I only use wifi and 3g only when necessary. Data plans suck. Calls work with good signal, not sure about texting, don't really text much.
It's fully working if you don't require usb tethering . The touchscreen in the installer is sometimes unresponsive when pressing the next and previous buttons, but the menu key works as next and back as back. No other issues with the installer. While it may have been wifi and running a lot of crap in a short time as a basic stress test, I thought the battery drained faster than usual.
The rom is worth checking out. I really like its theme and set up more than anything.

After typing all of the below, I realized I for got to ask--Did you enable signature verification by accident or have a bad download? I've been using the cm72 patch since the day Quarx released a proper bravo rom and haven't ever had a bad zip error, and the white rabbit patch is identical to the cm72 patch other than the build.prop and apns-conf.xml. I'm not sure if it matters, but I've only used the wr patch with the recovery from epyslon3's latest cm72 nightly 0212.
If its the patch for white rabbit, remove the build.prop from the patch and remove the line
"/system/build.prop"); from /META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script. We probably had conflicting installer options. Once you reboot after updating both zips, make sure to boot into 2nd boot like the installer says...although 2nd init booted it up just fine after the initial post-install bootloop last night for me.
You'll also need to edit the build.prop for the camera and device settings with the ones I included. You also need to make sure do delete strings for flash under OLD Tags as well.
I have a habit of editing the build.prop manually before flashing a new rom, and the one in the patch was also the build.prop in the white rabbit rom, both times I installed it.

Tried out latest KANG cherry pick today and its usb tethering works, 3g doesn't however. Tried multiple basebands and replacing radio with no luck. The att apn wasn't correct, and fixing didn't help.
Also, the 3g on White Rabbit doesn't work either. Anybody here port a defy cm7 after 0212? Other than these two I really haven't, and I'm wondering if newer defy cm7's are bravo incompatible, glithcy, or just that the KANG cherry picks don't like us.
I've also since downloaded the White Rabbit patch from here and didn't get any zip errors. Here's how I installed if anybody's interested:
reboot recovery
select WhiteRabbitEdition-1.3.zip
English
Install Type->Custom
Rom Options->Full Wipe, Moto Defy MB525, Google Apps, ICS Standard
Tweaks Options->AGPS Version, CM7 Stock, Off, Gingerbread, Standard
Style Options->ExDialer, ADW Launcher, CM7 DSP Manager
No other changes
Exit Installer
apply bravopatch-whiterabbit1.3.zip
reboot to bootmenu
set 2nd_boot to default
reboot to bootloop
remove and insert battery
power on
enjoy
I just realized I downloaded it wrong. Working great! Thanks!

Does usb tethering and 3g work? I never had them working with White Rabbit. To be specific, does turning on wifi then using usb tethering work. I use my phone as a wireless nic instead of running an ethernet cable through the house to my linux box. Kinda hard to update debian with no internet.

How were you trying to make the camera work?
I've also heard good things about that rom, just haven't bothered trying it yet.
Also, the latest quarx cm7 nightly is pretty stable. Using it now... my earlier cm7 patch works, but a new line in build.prop is needed and the apn-conf.xml from the white rabbit patch is required unless you like setting up the apn each time. Actually, I've had to change\fix the apn-conf.xml for every cm7 nightly after epsylon3's feb 12 nightly. epsylon3's feb 12 nightly is a real good rom to use if you want a good defy rom to use. I used it as my primary rom till quarx's latest 7 and I'm switching to epsylon's tomorrow.

That's the problem, that patch was made for cm7 only.
The steps to PORT CAMERA ONLY to any GB ROM.
Does not work with MS2Ginger2.1
Do everything preflash.
Open WhateverRomForDefy.zip in Archive Manager
Under system/etc, delete cameraCalFileDef5m.bin & cameraCalFileDef8m.bin, and replace mot_ise_imager_cfg.bin & media_profiles.xml from cm7 patch
Under system/lib, replace libcamera.so, libcamera_client.so, & libcameraservice.so with the same from cm7 patch.
Edit build.prop for camera like in post 7 under the OLD Tags. While the post is for WR, the camera changes are the same, & all changes are almost at bottom of build.prop. If you can read, you'll see them....
If the above doesn't work, whatever rom your trying is either
That's how I port roms normally. Again this is bare minimum camera. If that doesn't work, you\we're up the that creek with that rom in regards to the camera. FYI, I do all my rom edits with Archive Manager and GEdit\JEdit on Debian Linux. I'm not sure of the Windows alternative (7zip and Notepad++ I'd imagine) cause I haven't used Windows for anything more than SuperOneClick and other Win exclusive\non-wineable apps since XP was released....Win2K was awesome, I miss it.

Captivate currently had TWICS. Its base code from cm9 with TW launcher and Samsung gs3 add on with devil kernel. Running this o my cappy. Super fast and stable. Just an outstanding rom.
Can someone port this to vibrant please!
What are you looking at shortbus......
*NOT SURE/CONFIRMED
But since it is in the line of the original galaxy s, I think you can just flash it, and then change modem/kernel/key layout, which is done by a script (forgot what its called in our development section)
ok, i found it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1623840
Using that, you SHOULD be able to flash any Galaxy S ROM (except the 4G)
If it doesn't work, nothing will go wrong, most likely you will
1) boot loop
2) key layout will be mixed up(easy fix)
3) no connection (change modem/kernel)
*you said this was TWICS, make sure it is ICS and not just themed to look like TWICS.
Link to rom please?

extract the rom to a folder then go to /extracted folder/META - INF/com/Google/Android from there open updater-script and remove all getprop lines
come back to META - INF folder and delete all three files
zip the file and flash it in recovery
NOTE:- to edit updater script use jota text editor(android), notepad (windows)"
It's in the patch's thread.
Do that.
I followed the thread exactly used jota changed everything and tried again. It just aborts install. I haven't given up. Gonna try again tomorrow. It beat me tonight but not for good! Thanks for everything x.

firstly I want to tell you that because of not having a vibrant to test the patch is in beta
what you can do is open updater script with jota text editor and remove all those getprop lines from the script and as a security step what you can do is press menu button then tap on file and tap on line break then select (lf for android/Linux) save the file go to meta-inf folder and remove all those cert files
zip the package again and flash no need to sign it again for further help you can ask me also in the patch thread

Thanks for input. I first tried it using a captivate port and it would install then I would run patch and it wouldn't boot past vibrant screen. Then I got the original galaxy s rom that the cappy rom was ported from. It gave the error so I proceeded to change the file as per op instructions. It would abort install with but no error status. I did it twice to make sure. If I changed all the get prop from i9000 to t959 would it work?

you should not replace them instead just remove them
after flashing if it gives error then reboot device and with any root explorer app go to /cache/recovery and upload both the files I will see what the error is and then I can troubleshoot better
So guys I'm the twics porter to the cappy twics will soon be called remics I've been a part of a team that took over twics and I will soon be releasing to captivate

Do you think it'd be possible for you to release a version for Vibrant as well? Since not much will have to be changed from Captivate.
Just modem/kernel, and possibly build.prop

and what about uploading the error log from /cache/recovery
I took the twics add on from mr.mad for gs1 running cm9/slim and flashed on my vibrant running gummy 1.2.6 and it got stuck on boot . I reflashed gummy without wiping and now have all the apps from add on except for tw launcher. I guess that's a happy medium until we can get a port.

Just go to that file, copy it and paste it into your SD or something, and then upload it from there.
Because I have flashed a new rom and kernel the recovery log doesn't have the abort/error info...
Posse magnet......
I've been searching for and learning about custom boot animations for my Sprint SG4. I'm running Sacs custom 4.4.2 rom, NAE. It's rather bewildering for a newb like me, but I think I've figured out how to actually display custom boot animations.
I came across this thread explaining how to create a custom boot animation in the qmg format:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/how-to-make-change-boot-shutdown-t2224639
So that seems straight forward enough. Should this work with the Sprint GS4?
Are there any good lists of boot animation collections? There are a number of custom animations out there but they seem to be scattered around. Is there a more comprehensive list somewhere?
If I understand the above thread correctly I should be able to take any custom animation I find and modify it to work as a qmg file.
Seems like something fun to waste my time on...
Here's some, there's a bunch out there.

Rom Toolbox has a bunch. Some are better than others. I'd be curious to see what you make.

Thanks for the link. Does ROM Toolbox work with Samsung devices that use the qmg extension for boot animations?
In any event, I've found a flashable zip that enables the use of bootanimation.zip files for the boot animation instead of qmg. This way is much easier. The link in the OP is for creating custom boot animations using Samsung Theme Designer (qmg).
I think I'll post a tutorial sometime soon showing how to use bootanimation.zips on the S4 (instead of qmg). I spent the last several days searching, searching, searching for something that turned out to be surprisingly easy to do but the info just wasn't all together or concise.

The boot ani creation thing I've had on the back burner for a long time. I keep getting distracted by other things. I don't know much about the qmg process yet, I just use roms/kernel combos that support custom anis. I have this evil dead gif animation of a crawling hand I'm dying to use as a boot animation so I should start reading up.
