[Q] How many hd tegra games can fit in 10-11 GB. - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i was just calculating the space i would need and i came up with 11-12 for how many gb's i would have for games. Is it enough for at least 3-4 tegra hd games with space to spare? when does the nexus 7 stop allowing you to download apps. I heard someone saying the last 3gb cannot be used for app installs. Is this true or is it only a few megabytes left when you cannot install more apps. I feel the nexus 7 16gb may be just enough with room to spare.
Thanks for the answers

The 16gb has 13.24 gbs of usable storage. If I were you I would wait a bit and see if a 32gb one comes out. It's very likely. Just check the general section.

i would say you can have at least 12 HD tegra optimised games.

8gb or 16gb.

Going to be asked sooner or later so why not?
16GB. Although this whole $50 for 8GB and $100 for 16GB upgrade in the smartphone world really bothers me. It's just expensive.
I will probably go with 8. I always go with the cheapest version of any phone I get in order to upgrade to something down the line that much easier without losing too much, if any.
Plus I keep my phones VERY clean so I don't have a bunch of clutter with music, movies, and games. I probably have around 200 songs, 1 movie, and emulators for gaming so I won't come anywhere close to 8gb.
Wait till they discontinue the 8gb version and release the 32gb version. They have done it with the Nexus 7.
I predict 8gb version will only have around 6gb of actual storage space, in order word, it can't store nothing. Even if you don't need more space, buying the 8gb version will lose its value for resale in the future imo, especially if a 32gb version come along.

I'm weak willed and can't hold out to wait for a possible 32GB version, so I'm going for the 16GB as soon as it's released. 16GB barely cuts it, but if I try hard enough I can fit all my data onto about 13GB. Hopefully the formatted space is at least that much :/
I have 12.27gb available on mine. But I only use about 5gb including 3 ROMs backed up and about a gig worth of mods, and about 150 pics/vids. I don't game much (leave that for tablets) and I stream through Spotify/G Music.
Originally, i thought 8gb wouldnt be enough but it actually would be OK for me.

Does anyone what the breakdown of 'internal storage' versus 'phone storage' will be?
Internal storage being the space where apps can be installed.

This won't be exactly the same but to give some idea...
I have a 16gb 1X and 12.27 available. 2.34 GB internal available and 9.93 gb available on sd

If I remember correctly from using the Galaxy Nexus, since it doesn't have microSD, the entire space (16gb) will be available for apps installation. Though someone should confirm this.

You can do what ever you want with all of the remaining space. Apps, storage, whatever.
After having a Nexus7 8gb i won't be making that mistake again any time soon.

True this less the space used for system apps. Since ics the storage has been just one big chunk unlike the previous gb and lower where there is a dedicated partition for system apps, usb storage, etc

I have nexus 7 8gb version and have barely filled it and I use it daily.
I have my iPod for music and stream media within the house from computer or Netflix.
Also taking advantage of Google music's 20,000 cloud storage, think the music matching service is something that is very underated!!
All I will have on phone is a few tidbit games (angry birds etc) and any important photos and stuff.
8gb will be plenty imo.

different with a phone IMO than a tablet.
I have a 32GB Xoom - I use 16GB if that - a large chunk is on photos/videos (around 6GB)
I have an Evo3D with a 32GB sdcard - I use 20GB of that. Again a large chunk is on photos/videos (around 7GB)
all my music is via Google Music
I worry that 16GB isn't going to be enough.
I wouldn't feel so bad if all the games available stored their save data in /sdcard/... rather than /data/data
Annoyingly it feels like you _have_ to root to get access to transfer or backup saved data.
e.g. angry birds, world of goo, sonic 4 ep 2 (oddly sonic 4 ep 1 saves on sdcard, but ep 2 doesn't)
I wish all developers of games would follow some guidelines on where to store the save files.
I can't decide. I don't use my phone for music or films and my HTC Desire doesn't have anywhere near 8GB being used. That said, for the price and the fact that it doesn't have an SD slot, I'm still tempted by the 16gb

I will hands of buy even 4 GB version but with expandable storage if Google release it
Other wise it is 32 GB when it comes
32gb... or any gb with sd card...google hear us
I'm in for the 16. I keep a very clean phone, too, but I envision situations where I'd fill it up with a video (I've done this with previous phones at family holidays).
Definitely get 16G
on 16G Nexus 7 and GN I constantly run out of space and I am a clean guy - upload and delete all photos, videos, etc and still get Out of Space warning from the system. A few games you may decide to play and boom, each taking 1.5G-2G - your space is gone. I assume next year we will see games taking more and more so we will be hitting the limit with 16G even sooner.
BTW 16G devices show around 12G space total, so 4G must be taken by system apps or for swap space or something similar.
Even if you do not play any games today and use iPod for music - what if you decide to change that tomorrow, or store a few photos/videos. 8G will not last you enough and you will be longing for a new decide quickly, so that $50 savings on extra 8G may come to haunt you.
16GB, though I'd happily pay more for 32 or even 64.

[Q] RAM Usage

The Nexus 4 comes with 2GB ram, that's awesome. What I want to know, however, is how much of that is actually available after booting? I was looking at my girlfriend's Galaxy Nexus, which has 1GB ram, and she has just under 200MB ram free with Android 4.2. Does this translate to 1200MB free on the nexus 4, or does it simply gobble the ram that you have up, regardless?
As the nexus 4 isn't available unless you pay extortion prices on ebay, I need to find out if it'll be worth waiting for, or if I should simple settle for a 1GB phone.
I havent rebooted the phone for a couple of days now. Also im using a live wallpaper plus a couple of services like skype/lightflow/facebook etc etc.
The multitasking on this device is unmatched. Do not settle for a 1GB RAM device .

:crying: That's both what I was hoping for and what I was afraid of. I don't want to settle for a 1GB device, but as google is completely unable to deliver this phone, I may soon not have a choice. It also doesn't help that my colleague at work got his nexus 4 the other day... Perhaps I'll just have to bite the bullet and get it off of eBay? Any sellers in Berlin, Germany wanting to part with theirs?
never run out of ram or even gone below 500mb free ram on the n4. even with ****loads of apps, games and heavy duty work running in the bg...
I know what you mean. This phone is such a great device and the price is unbelievable, but the problem lies with actually getting one(unless you live in the US). I myself had to get one through a relative of mine who lives in the US, and i had him send it all the way to Jordan .. Its worth it though ^^`.
If you could get one off ebay for like $50 more than the Play Store's price, get it. My opinion …

Bit the bullet
In the end I bit the bullet and got mine on eBay. I ended up paying a 110 EUR premium, but that's only 11 EUR more than I would have paid if I'd gone to the store and gotten a GSIII, and that only has 1 GB of RAM...
I just hope that I get what I think I'm getting, and not a box of spiders or something...
At boot, i usually have about 1.4gb free with about 130 apps

The adreno 320 GPU can handle almost anything, I don't get any lag on HD games such as Real Racing 3. The RAM isn't an issue, 2gb is more than enough. I got 12.92 GB available storage on my 16GB unit.

[Q] Nexus 7 maintenance apps for Lags?

I just read this http://androidandme.com/2013/06/opi...-from-the-best-to-worst-tablet-ive-ever-owned
I was wondering about that as well; aside from continued use, the lags are more evident when it reaches the 9gb mark.
I have a 32 GB ram Nexus 7 and seriously; out of the 32 GB, we actually only have 27.5 GB storage.
I usually need more than 9GB of storage free space so i can have a buttery smooth performance.
Estimate 9+ gb to 10GB which means i have 17GB left to work with.
So far, I only discovered 2 worthwhile apps in battling this Nexus 7 predicament for non root users.
Clean master and Forever Gone.
Clean master is a great app for clearing files and releasing load from the 1 GB Ram.
While forever gone seems to work better than restore factory settimgs., it is somewhat slow and inconvenient.
Anyway, is there any other way to have better performance out of the Nexus 7?
Up to how many GB of free space you leave off before it starts to lag?
There was a discussion about this on AAA last week, but no real conclusions as to what might be causing it. One thing they mentioned was the possibility of the flash based storage "giving out". One guy commented that there are no real garbage collection routines present, so without a lot of free space, storage must be manually erased before being written to, and that can take a lot of time. This is why SSD's have garbage collection or trim routines running at idle to erase unallocated blocks.
It sounds plausible as our tablets are either being used or sleeping, with no real idle time for garbage collection to occur. Of course this is all conjecture at this point. I certainly see more lag in my upcoming 1 year old N7, but nothing like the unresponsiveness originally reported by folks filling up their storage, nor the symptoms described in the article you referenced.
But when mine goes belly up, I plan to move to an iPad. The tablet experience on Android pretty much sucks IMHO, and in the better part of the year in which I have been using it, it hasn't got much better. Of the hundred + apps I have on it, I can count on my fingers how many of them are actually optimized for a tablet.

A little worried on Available RAM

We know the Adreno 330 takes a lot of RAM, it says in this video only 2440mb of ram is available.
That doesn't shock me. What shocks me is after the guys is running the video and in the screen shot it says available ram.
Note 2 610mb available :good:
Note 3 270mb available!!!

What do you guys think? Will this be an issue?
My htc one X has more available RAM than that! and its horrible at multitasking :crying:
That's shocking where is all the ram gone looks like little pacman inside the phone has been busy crunching all those megs of ram ouch.
Yep !
Same problem here. I think that we'll need to wait the root for the N3 to clean up trash apps.
No need to worry.
I made a thread about it since I saw a screenshot of CPU-Z stating that were only 14% of free memory.
But I was reassured in the thread I created since I got some details regarding the overall free RAM you can get on boot : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=45750359&postcount=19
So you can expect, straight out of the box, an average of 1Gb of Free RAM to play with at your leisure !
There's already a thread on it and all things related to ram was covered so no need to continue this again.
No need to worried. I am the user of Note 3, didn't face any RAM not enough yet since purchase start use yesterday.
I myself just tried out a note 3 in a Samsung Mobile Store and it has about 1Gb of free RAM after clearing the memory. If you let the phone run without doing anything you just loose 200Mb.
Plus Android's VM ans the launcher take 400mb!

The Nexus 10 is suppose to have "2GB" of ram, but my Nexus 10 only have "1099"

In later software releases, they decided to allocate more of the ram to the video. Search this forum for a more detailed answer if interested.

I remember finding this out a few years ago and being pretty upset at the time. The tablet advertises 2GB of RAM, and yet about 1GB of it is only usable for the expected advertising purpose.
It's like me advertising my computer has 12GB of RAM, meanwhile, 4GB of that is dedicated to the GPU (which on it's own isn't really a problem, but it would make more sense to advertise 8GB)
Even then it would still be 12GB.
Let me get a little technical.
If you have an APU based PC, the GPU is on the same die as the processor. So when you use the GPU portion of the APU, it will use the RAM. How much? It depends on the load.
You can still use all of it though, so it isn't a problem. When you aren't using the GPU, all of your RAM is available.
