[Q] Windows 8 Taking Up 138 gb After Fresh Install - Windows 8 General

I did an upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro RTM by doing a clean install of Windows 8. I kept no programs or settings. I have installed absolutely nothing except the Boot Camp drivers I need since I'm running Windows 8 on a partition on my MacBook Pro. The partition is 201 GB and of that 201 GB only 68 GB is currently free. As I said before, I did not install anything else. Is this normal? I read that the requirements for Windows 8 was 20 GB.

Can you figure out what folder is taking up 100+GB? Just go to c drive and right click properties on each one.

solved the problem. There is a Windows.old folder, which kept all my files from Windows 7. It's taking up 107 GB. I'm currently removing it with Disk Cleanup.

I thought disk cleanup would have just deleted it. It's taking very long to do whatever it's doing.

Yeah disk cleanup is pretty useless to people who know what it deletes and where to find it. It takes forever to scan what its going to delete.

Windows.old has some stuff in it which is very difficult to delete conventionally. High level permissions/system files/etc can get in the way. That's what Disk Cleanup is for.
Once it finally loads, remember to click the "Clean up system files" button, with the little administrator badge next to it. Then wait for it to load all over again.
Sometimes (?), Windows.old only appears there.

I guess I wouldn't know that, since I format before installing windows anyway.

[Q] Stop Windows 8 from " Picking System to Boot"

Background: So I was running Windows 8 Built 2400 and I wanted to upgrade the new built. I decided to Download BluePoison and download windows built 8400 from there. I put it in a bootable USB and ran it but something when wrong and didn't let me install it. So I decided to go to windows 8 official website and download the official windows. I install it and everything work then I rebooted.
Now when my pc rebooted It let me to a blue screen where its gave me 3 options: (1) Windows 8 Volume 2 (2) Windows 8 Volume 2 (3) Choose Options { can remember exact name }. When I choose (1) it boots up regularly. When I pick (2) it gives me and error that windows can run cause a file its missing ( Im pretty sure this is some left over from the installation that fail)
So does anyone know how I can stop thing and just let windows boot into option (1) automatically
Open explorer, right click Computer, hit properties, hit advanced system settings, then hit the settings button in the Startup and Recovery group.

if its installed to a different partition then right click in the bottom right corner of desktop to give you the quick menu, go to disk management and delete the no longer needed partition.
It would be wise to make sure you know which one it is, check in My computer, you will see the drive you are currently using Windows from will have a blue windows logo on it. Then expand your existing partition to use the space
If you somehow installed it on the same partition or it just went wrong then check for Windows.old folders, its unlikely that Windows will have installed to the same folder
Also hit Win-R to bring up the Run dialog box
type in MSCONFIG
Goto Boot
select the dead OS and delete it

nope, I wouldn't delete any of them
if you want to be sure, open up a command console
type in diskpart
then type list volume
it will give you a list of all your volumes.
if you can copy it or take a screen shot and post it here we can take a look
The drives you have listed tho look like valid partitions that HP would install for recovery purposes so whatever happened with the other install it doesn't look like it changed anything other than messing with the boot config.

[Q] Why Windows Explorer crash when renaming file through MTP?

I can copy large and multiple small files TO the Nexus 4 no problem with MTP.
Copying FROM the device to PC is always finicky. I resorted to qtADB for that.
But whenever I tried to rename a file or folder thru MTP, Explorer hangs and not responding. I have to kill it via Task Manager to gain back control.
It's getting really annoying picking up my phone just to rename a folder.
For what its worth, I use Windows 8 64-bit, Nexus 4 with AOKP build 2, franco.kernel r68-test.
Any body can help me?
Thanks in advance, guys.

I don't think I have your problem but regarding recovering from Explorer hanging (which I have experienced before for x other reason with MTP) I find that the hanging will stop once the phone is unplugged. That should be a less intrusive way than using the Task Manager. Let me know if that method works for you too.

I also use AirDroid and all is fine.
But when I want to copy, let say 5GB worth of FLACs, Wi-Fi is just too slow.
MTP is a ****ty protocol, but I do understand the need for it. Android doesnt use FAT32, hence the MTP.

On my previous LG Optimus L7, Explorer crash when I copy multiple files to the device. I had to resort with the ol' and trusty method of USB card reader.
It's alot better on the Nexus 4, though. Copying files to the device is all good. Copying from the device and renaming files are where the problem lies.
I hate this. At least iTunes is somewhat reliable for the iPhone.
Granted, MTP is necessary for phones without microSD slot, because Android use EXT file system which not readable by Windows. To allow USB Mass Storage mode, the manufacturer has to partition the phone storage, one is EXT for Android system and apps, the other is FAT32 for user data. We also hate that configuration, since it will limit app storage.
But I still hate how unreliable MTP is.

I have same problem with my Galaxy S3.
I looks like that the root of problem is Windows 8 64-bit. I didn't have such problem when I used it under Windows 7 64-bit.
To me, it took more than 20 minutes to rename a file. Well.. As you expected, Explore was not responding.
However, once finishing renaming successfully, there was no "not responsing" to rename files until detatching my phone.
windows 8 is definitely the problem, I have all kinds of issues between android phones and Win8, where I never had any issues before "upgrading" to win8. I wish i had a solution but i dont. Maybe it would be easier to rename the files using a native file explorer, if you are rooted.

It's NOT a Windows 8 problem. I Have exactly the same problem on Windows 7 Pro 64 (I have a Nexus 4, btw). And now in Windows 8.1. Crashing all the time... MTP and Windows SUX!!! This problem don't happen in Ubuntu 13.

Same annoyance here, but for once I let Explorer "hang" for up to 2 whole minutes while renaming a folder, and I discovered it finally did rename, just requires patience.
hi guys,
i know this is an old thread..
i was just curious to know if someone has already got a solution to this.
i can confirm, that this has to do with windows 8-64bit.
i had never experienced any problems with MTP and windows before windows 8-64bit.
Sorry to bump such an old thread but did you guys solve the problem? Did you find some kind of workarround?
Thanks in advance
I can't believe this is still a thing. Absolutely infuriating.
Yeah, I would've hoped this would be fixed by now. The only work around I found is just to create the folder name you want on Windows and drop it into Android. Then use Android to delete the old folder.
If you're moving old files to the new folder from Android. Then you want to use Android file explorer to move the files you want to it. If you use Windows to do it, it's going to take a while, as if you're copying new files from Windows to Android again.
Any word if Lollipop would fix this issue?

Lollipop has not fixed the issue........ Is there a solution somewhere that I've missed? I've been searching since I upgraded to 8.... I know this is a very old thread but I can't find anything....
I don't have a complete solution but I've discovered a workaround. When renaming a file, rather than clicking outside of the text area after typing the new name, instead press enter to confirm and it doesn't lock up (in my case). Been having the same issue with my S3 previously and S5 currently ever since I've used MTP.
I have this problem only one solution for me is F2FS. But I'm on FlexOS with OnePlus and it does not support F2FS
Guys, the problem still continues.
I try to connect my G4 in Win 7 and 8.1 then renaming the new folder, but it still makes my Win Explorer not responding

? Windows 10 on a WinBook TW800

I have a WinBook TW800 from Micro Center. I wanted to load Windows 10 on it, has anyone on here done this? Maybe you can give me tips\pointers on how to go about doing this; is the update method better or would a clean install be the ideal way? Thanks for your help in advanced.
Well I got my answer today while trying to do it via the update way. I got an error that my tablet wasn't able to upgrade because the OS is compressed something about Boot WIM. SMH.

I'm having issues too. I don't think the 800 has enough space to do the install. The 801 seems like a better option due to the 16gb of storage, vs the 8gb on the 800.

I will try it this some time this week. Thanks.
No luck
Apparently I can't because the memory is full so I basically can't do anything with this POS. I can't back it up or restore it or add anything to it, it actually runs out of disk space when uninstalling stuff.
I successfully installed Windows 10 on my TW-801 I first installed internally (internal installation failed) and then installed again via the sdcard (so you have to burn the win image to the sdcard for the second install in addition to doing the download for the first install). The second time Windows 10 was activated. I am also running Ubuntu with VMWare on a virtual machine on this tablet. Windows 10 is alot better than 8.1 on this tablet. I think even though the internal installation fails it saves the Windows 10 activation code and the second install works because it is not a download and is directly from the cd or in this case the sd. Also, during the first download (that fails) two files are created on the c drive that I copied to the sdcard that I had already burned the win image on it - I don't know if that did anything or not.

but i found new way to install Windows 10 fo Phone for any non-supported phone (for all Lumia’s with SDCard enable).
Ok, let’s do it!
Please: DO WITH YOUR OWN RISK!!!
***Requirement***
– Windows Phone 8.1 (Denim or 8.10.14219.xxx is recomended)
– You must have preview for developers installed before to continue with these steps. (Download Preview for Developer from store)
– Have more 300MB free space of Sys Space
If you not have enought space, Flash your phone with Nokia Care Suite of Lumia Software Recovery Tools (you can check here http://forum.xda-developers.com/windows-phone-8/general/how-to-flash-nokia-care-suite-5-t3044200 )
– Internet connection and WiFi
// Hack Your Phone!
Download Hack Tools.zip here
www.4shared.com/zip/9WPofdrGba/Hack_Tools__WP81_.html or see attachments
1. Deploy Custom_WPSystem.xap tool
2. In Hack Tool.zip, the Custom_PfD.xap file, save/place it in sd card.(just place, don’t deploy it!)
3.Now open Custom_WPSystem.xap tool. At startup you can see “SD Card permissions” as red color. Now click that , browse and select SDcard (just SDCard!) to apply permissions.
4.Now you can see “SD Card Permissions” as green color.
5.After changing SD Card permissions click on browse xap button.
6.Browse and select Custom_pfd.xap from SD card and click Apply XAP Button.
7.After successfully applying custom_pfd tool to preview for developers goto Preview for Developers apps.
8.Now your phone is hacked and you can edit registry of your WP8.1.
// Change the registry key
9.Browse to HKLM\SYSTEM\Platform\DeviceTargettingInfo | you will see green bar as “You can edit here!”
10.Change these values of some this key.
– Change PhoneFirmwareRevision from default to ->>02055.00000.14511.22002 and click the write button.
– Change PhoneManufacturerModelName from default to ->> RM-984_1006 and click the write button.
– Change PhoneOperatorName from default to ->> 00-IN and click the write button.
Thanks for djamol about the WP8.1 Hacking
// Here is the trick!
11. Then, go to windows insider app and Tap “Get preview build”
if you can’t see any build available for your phone, try to “open windows insider then select sign in with different account > Sign in with Microsoft Account. After that login back with same windows insider account” and then choose the build what you want, you can select “Insider Fast” or “Insider Slow” about what you want to try.
12. Download the update using WiFi!

At first I was able to log in the insider then get the update, though, after downloading and half an hour of spinning wheels, I was getting an 08xxxx error whitch was common on early updates of wp8.1 due to lack of space. So I cleaned up the phone to factory specs. Now, I'm not able to log in the innsider app, as when I input username and password, the app craches. Even if there's no tweak at all.

That generally means there was an error while it was updating to Windows 10. I would recommend updating your BIOS (which worked for my computer) and/or update important drivers. Unfortuneately, there is no one size fits all answer to this problem (to my knowledge).

Ah, I missed it was in a loop. I hate to break it to you, but if it is stuck at the loading circle, it could be a very low level problem. Do you have recovery media?

What do you mean by very low level problem?
No i don't,
I got the win 10 files on my flash drive, can't i see if there a log or something that say what is the error who caused this?

Essentially, your computer goes through a few steps when it is starting up. First, it loads the BIOS, which is stored on a chip on your motherboard. Then it loads an OS loader. Then it loads Windows. You can see here for more on the process (if you want an indepth look). When it is loading Windows it goes through a few steps, as mentioned in that post. Normally, when there is a problem with booting, you can try to go into Safe Mode by holding the F8 key. You should give this a try. If that doesn't work, you have bigger problems. At that point it is very likely that Windows is broken such that the built-in tools are not able to , and you will have to recover or re-install. You will then probably want to create recovery media.
EDIT: As to a log, I do not think you would be able to find one. I don't know of any error checking at that level, since it hasn't loaded much of the operating system. Of course I could be wrong.

I don't have any data on this tablet, so i might just do an re-install, do i just need to put windows on a usb stick or do i need to do something else?
EDIT: I just looked at the files on the sd card, there is files with text in them:
"rollbackinfo" in folder "Rollback":
[Flow]
CurrentPhase=SafeOS,Start
CurrentOperation=32,end
OperationResult=2147943792
[BootEntries]
DownlevelCurrent={2D27CA4F-9B99-11E3-9D11-9483277031A5}
DownlevelDefault={2D27CA4F-9B99-11E3-9D11-9483277031A5}
[BootManager]
Timeout=30
[OldOS]
ConnectedStandby=Yes
Compressed=Yes
[RecoveryPartition]
Backup=Yes
Info.Rec=0,10658775040,4859101184
InfS=0,240123904,10418651136
And another named "location" on folder "WIMBoot.backup":
[WinRE Location]
Partition offset=10658775040
Relative path=\Recovery\WindowsRE
On the second one can't i just put another location and install a full brand new windows on it?
i guess you have access to another PC, if so use the media creation tool (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10) to create a bootable USB stick and try reinstalling win 10

Update:
They sent me back a replacement tablet with 8.1 on it and forgot to send back my 32GB SD card. Just a tad miffed. I know I'll get it back, but am extremely concerned about allowing the new one to try and update to 10.
_____
Gave up and got an RMA to send it in for repair. Should get it back with Windows 10 loaded on it. FYI - the standard warranty is only 90-days, and I'm within that timeframe, so it's covered. Hope yours is as well, but not sure how they're handling this for out-of-coverage units.
I also same problem. Please help me to get my table PC again.
