Hi,
I have been following the steps required to root the G1, and have obtained root, up until a point. However, when trying to plug my G1 into my OS X machine to copy the remaining required files over to the SD, it has caused a kernel panic on every attempt to do this.
Before, when my G1 was at CRB43 (UK phone) it interacted just fine, so I dont know why 1.0 is causing this problem.
Anyone got any ideas?
Mine isn't the same version as you (Haykuro's Hero) but yesterday I plugged in my g1 to update my phone and it BSOD my Windows 7 build Funny, but ya I'd also like to know what would cause this, though its only done it once.

I doubt its the G1, everytime something like this happens to my mac, its always the mac's fault. Could be something corrupt, try installing Onyx. Its a mac maintenance prog. Run the automation setting and see if that helps.

Another good thing to try is go into application/utilities/disk utilities and run a permissions check on your drive. I've fixed a kernel panic that way before.

It's all inclusive. It will prompt you to close everything except onyx too, so make sure you have everything saved. Its a great program!
Thanks for the tips guys, but still no joy. Plug G1 in and mouse pointer just freezes instantly...
Hey, you mentioned you have root to a point...
Since it seems we might not be able to fix the comp problem ( at least without some drastic steps like reinstalling the OS X possibly... ), can you tell us your goal with your phone? Are you trying to connect it so you can flash a different rom, or just trying to sync it with iTunes? Could you just buy a card reader and get to where you want to be?
I imagine you want to connect it to complete some sort of rooting process. If thats true we may be able to help you overcome the rooting issue.
If it helps, I have been running the Rogers R2 rom along side Leopard, and I don't have any troubles with them connecting.
Does anyone know if it would help to install the SDK? IDK, maybe there's some sort of drivers etc, that need to be reinstalled?

There are no drivers for the linux/mac sdk, so that won't help.
One other suggestion is to click on the apple in the menu bar, go to "about this mac", click on "more info", scroll to the bottom of the list and select logs under software. Choose the system.log and look for any indications of what the failure may be there. My guess is you have another usb device connected that is causing a problem. I had issues with my microsoft kybd/mouse and had to uninstall the stupid M$ software that came with it to get around a kernel panic (unrelated to the G1).
If you want, you can post the log here for us to look at.
ive noticed this with ubuntu, windows 7, windows xp home and mac whenever i mount the sd card over usb, any of the os'es freeze/crash -

Wow! Thats insanity.
Maybe unrelated, but I had to install a special ext2 format utility for my mac to even recognize the ext2 partition of my sd. And even then, it really didnt like mounting that partition. Never caused a kernal panic, but def slowed things down a lot.
Totally off-topic, but I love how Windows crashes are dubbed "Blue Screen of Death", while Mac OS gets "Kernel Panic".
Kernel Panic. lol
Sounds like a cartoon character.
yeah, sounds very Evil Orval Redenbacher-ish.

turns out its an issue with the HP mini 2133 i found others that have the same problem....after two hours of tech chat with HP problem persists....
macbook has always been finicky with the ext2 partition even with the ext2fs driver and macfuse....odd to me since mac is usually friendly....
Anyone running this? and if so, how does it work as far as development stuff goes. I just dont want to lose ADB and everything. I have a spare HDD lying around so I may just swap them out and install on there, or I could fix my old laptops LCD and get that system running with windows 7... regardless, I want to try before i buy lol
anyone got their own $.02?
PS- mods feel free to move this to the correct forum if need be, I wasnt sure where I would post a question like this as it regards to the Dream and the computer side of things...

Everything works on my x64 install (and it's where I do all my development), and I assume RC will work the same.
I was originally using Vista Home Premium and am now on the 7 RC. First off, there was a small problem applying to a group of Vista users that caused them to have a lot of problems installing ADB drivers, me included, in fact it was so screwed up I ended up completely messing up my computer and having to do a system restore and after a few hours was finally able to get it to install. Once I installed Windows 7 RC, I connected my G1, went to Device Manager, clicked on the G1 and installed the ADB drivers, and done. However, for me, I am unable to mount my phone as a mass storage device to access the SD card, in order to do this, I have to disable USB debugging on my phone, and it works, then reenable it again later to use ADB.

You shouldn't need to back anything up. Windows 7 RC doesn't require a clean install, it can back everything up for you.

Right, but one of the reasons i backed up now was so that when Windows 7 is actually released, i wont have to do it then seeing as how it will be in the middle of a semester for school and such. The 7 RC installs an "upgrade" so I should be in good shape as far as directories and all that go right? meaning i wont have to go into windows.old to find items i have downloaded and flashed to my current build on my g1.... they should be preserved... i would think...

They will be, and that is a good point as Microsoft doesn't offer an upgrade to Windows 7 OEM from RC, which is a bit annoying.
so i told myself before i started the install that if i got one error, i would stop right there and exit setup... a quarter of the way copying files it stopped and said that the files could not be copied blah blah... i think i may just wait til the OS goes public and upgrade then =P
mods feel free to trash this thread now... thanks to all you guys that chimed in to help!
I use virtual box or vmware and "xp pirate edition" to do all my adb work...
Hey guys, just an FYI-
Giveawayoftheday.com is featuring the above listed download for 17 more hours. This is NOT warez, as multiple companies allow free downloads for a 24 hour period. My advice is to download and activate this software FAST, as there are only about 17 more hours (as of this posting) to activate it. I've found PPM 9.0 to be very easy to use while partitioning, repartitioning, and formatting my card.
It's quicker than typing it all in console
Go HERE
There's also a link for 64bit system users on that page. Happy downloading.

I second that. PM 10 is awesome for PCs, but I wouldn't use it to partition my G1. There are partitioning tools built right into the latest Cyanogen's recovery image, and scripts around it to make it easier to use.
Helpfull for noobs.. Nice find.. WIll this work for the G1? The trial ones would only partition your local drives C:\
cheers
partition manager provides an easy way for the windows user to create the correct paritions in the correct order on any sd card so is valuable in this instance.
also aside from that its brilliant if you want to move a complete operating system to a new drive, it does this with vista and the machine wont even ask for reactivation.
anyways thats way off topic...
its definately worth using instead of Gparted if you havnt got a linux based setup.
PEACE. THANX.

It's funny how things work differently for everyone. I'm running Vista x86 and never had issues partitioning my SD card on my g1. Anyhow, some may find it useful.
Just downloaded and saved I'd rather use cyanogen's recovery image though
Thank you Sr. I do find it useful .. I have always used Paragon to partition my G1 with no problems at all..
awesome man. thanks for that site. after going through some of the stuff they have given away, im gonna check it daily now. Yesterday was driver magician
Thanks for the tip! Paragon Partition Manager is the best partition software I've ever used!
real men use the parted cli
Thanks for the software, but I honestly don't like it. I prefer just booting into linux to use GParted or popping in a GParted Live USB stick

Trust me, I do the same. I keep it bookmarked in my cell and on my PC
Just to let you guys know what has happened to me in the past with paragon. I was able to use it and was very simple but 2 times out of the 3 or 4 months I used it something went wrong with the partitioning which caused my pc to crash. Thus leaving me to reinstall the OS all over again. Good thing I kept everything backed up though.
Thanks for the find, unfortunately im downloading at 15kb/s. I feel like im using aol from 95
Hi,
One year ago, I successfully installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview. Since its asked me for license, I've bought Win8 Pro but the problem is that it won't let me keep my files in the installation. The only option Win8 install shows is the clean install as "nothing".
How to install Win8 Pro with keeping my desktop, files... ?
Thx in advance !
Are you are trying to upgrade from a beta copy of Windows 8 to the final retail version? I don't think that will be an option. You'll need to back up your files to a USB drive or something and do a fresh install.
Yes indeed. Why wont that be possible ?
The consumer preview is an unfinished version of Windows, it's possible issues with that could carry over with an upgrade to the retail version and cause head aches for Microsoft or anyone else that has to troubleshoot any problems that might occur.
I would expect that "keep my files (but not my programs)" would be a valid option, though... very odd if it is not. That's basically still a clean install, it just moves everything from the old OS (except your personal libraries) to a "Windows.old" folder.

From what I've read, you will have to do a clean install. Microsoft wants to make sure none of the preview stuff is mixed in with the official release files.

That generally means there was an error while it was updating to Windows 10. I would recommend updating your BIOS (which worked for my computer) and/or update important drivers. Unfortuneately, there is no one size fits all answer to this problem (to my knowledge).

Essentially, your computer goes through a few steps when it is starting up. First, it loads the BIOS, which is stored on a chip on your motherboard. Then it loads an OS loader. Then it loads Windows. You can see here for more on the process (if you want an indepth look). When it is loading Windows it goes through a few steps, as mentioned in that post. Normally, when there is a problem with booting, you can try to go into Safe Mode by holding the F8 key. You should give this a try. If that doesn't work, you have bigger problems. At that point it is very likely that Windows is broken such that the built-in tools are not able to , and you will have to recover or re-install. You will then probably want to create recovery media.
EDIT: As to a log, I do not think you would be able to find one. I don't know of any error checking at that level, since it hasn't loaded much of the operating system. Of course I could be wrong.

EDIT: I just looked at the files on the sd card, there is files with text in them:

Backup=Yes
Info.Rec=0,10658775040,4859101184

And another named "location" on folder "WIMBoot.backup":
[WinRE Location]

On the second one can't i just put another location and install a full brand new windows on it?

Update:
They sent me back a replacement tablet with 8.1 on it and forgot to send back my 32GB SD card. Just a tad miffed. I know I'll get it back, but am extremely concerned about allowing the new one to try and update to 10.
_____
Gave up and got an RMA to send it in for repair. Should get it back with Windows 10 loaded on it. FYI - the standard warranty is only 90-days, and I'm within that timeframe, so it's covered. Hope yours is as well, but not sure how they're handling this for out-of-coverage units.
I also same problem. Please help me to get my table PC again.
