Hi guys,
Apologies in advance for my question/problem which is probably retarded simple to fix, but so far I haven't been able to, and it's driving me nuts.
My Nexus 7 is fine, it's the Gmail app that is driving me crazy. The Gmail sync turns OFF for no reason in the Gmail app settings, thus I don't get any notifications. I have to turn it back ON manually, like 6 times a day, and it's driving me nuts. Sometimes it works, but most of the time it simply doesn't.
The app works fine with my Galaxy S i9000 running 2.3. Neither of my devices are rooted.
If anyone has any ideas or can help I'd greatly appreciate it.

To be honest, I think this happens with android devices in general, one minute ill be getting my push notifications, the next they just wont come through, then randomly they'll start coming through again.
Well that's pretty... lame. I have everything sync'd up perfectly so I was wondering what it could be. A bit disappointing tbh.

Try verifying / setting Gmail Sync under Settings > Accounts > Google > your gmail account.
Thanks for the tip, I just checked there and everything seems to be just fine. Then went into my Gmail app to see that sync was off just 10 seconds later, lol.

Is anyone else getting delayed pushes from Gmail? The time I receive the email can vary anywhere from instantly, to minutes later.
I've been doing testing by comparing it to K9. K9 consistently gets every single email instantly.
Anyone else experience the same problem?
Yep. I get mines on my tablet before on my Nexus 4

Gmail has always, since 2009, done this to me. Anything that comes directly into my gmail account I get almost instantly but any thing from my forwarded accounts takes up to 30 minutes as gmail doesn't querry the other servers that frequently. I haven't found any way to make gmail querry my other email servers more frequently.
Op, is this just on WiFi? Or does it also happen on mobile network?

This happens to me with WhatsApp
This is on WiFi with a very strong connection. I don't have service yet so I can't test mobile data yet.

You are probably just losing your WiFi connection. Google it. A few of us on here have the problem of losing connection to Google services after a few minute of screen off while on WiFi.

No I'm not losing my wifi connection. My original post states that I am doing the exact same test with K9. K9 gets it instantly, gmail always lags behind.
This happens more frequently on the N4 than any other Android device I've owned. Something is up with the Google Sync on it. On both wifi or HSPA(AT&T), my gmail is delayed, google voice too. Yesterday, I had a message sent to me on purpose to see how long it would take and waited 40 minutes for it arrive...I had to manually refresh Gmail for it to show up. I've gone through all the auto-sync and sync settings in gmail and in settings(data usage and google account). I'm running CM10.1 nightlies on it, so I wonder if it's on that end. To try this, send yourself an email, the first one might push...send another one in about 30 secs to 1 minute after you send the first...it won't show up immediately like the first one did...If the first one showed up immediately at all. Seriously unreliable push...gFail.
I have the same issue with my N4. Is there a fix for this? I have to manually refresh gmail every time. My tablet gets the emails much faster.

Do you happen to be using a custom rom or stock?
I'm tempted to flash back stock to see if it's an issue with CM 10.1 nightlies.
A temporary fix, which I'm using, is to use a different email client. I'm using K9 and it gets the emails instantly. However, I'd rather use Gmail's app since the interface/interactions are much nicer.

Not sure that's a CM 10.1 issue or not. Coz I am using vanilla jelly bean (4.2.1) and updated my gmail app to 4.2.1 as well, having the same issue.
I setup the same Gmail address on stock e-mail app using exchange server settings, email pushed and notified me almost instantly. So I suspect that's a glitch of the gmail app.
So I think I have found a preliminary fix for it. I have read other threads about sycing problems with Gmail, but can't comment on those. I sometimes keep Google Now on when on Wifi, but turn it off when out and about. I think this MIGHT be causing a lack of sync. When I checked to see if my gmail was synced it was not.
I have since kept Google Now off and see that I have no problems with getting my mails in as they come. It is faster than my tablet now.
Hope it helps.

I have tried, still no joy, i even tried to factory reset my Nexus 4, but still having freaking bad delay...
hooking onto the same WiFi, my iPhone and the One X+ both get the push email without delays. Even more worrying is that my One X+ is also using GMail 4.2.1. I starting to worry that is a hardware issue? (coz my frd's Nexus 4 do not have sync delay)
Hey guys, I have been having a problem with Google Sync for some time now and wondered if anyone else
has the same problem. For me the auto-sync no longer works for any of the Google services, most noticeably gmail. On my old DHD and the N4 when I just got it, emails would appear on my device almost instantaneously after being sent no matter if I was on 3G or Wi-Fi or if phone was asleep. For last couple months the phone would sync emails about 1nce a day and since I need to know when new emails arrive, I'm forced to force sync from either Google sync in settings, or by clicking refresh from GMail itself.
I googled this issue many times and there seems to be a lot of people with the same problems and many different suggestions, I tried the ones listed below, but nothing works and if anyone knows how to fix this, please let me know!
I have 3 Gmail accounts and my auto sync is turned on from both the quick toggles in notification bar, the power widget (don't use it just wanted to see if it would help) and from data usage settings. I'm running AOKP ROM milestone 1 but this problem as far as I remember happened on other ROMs too. I also do not have any power saving apps installed. I also have about 1GB of free memory. I also disabled browser sync under someone's advice.
Doing a clean flash of a ROM does help for couple of days, maybe a week, but then always the same thing happens. Clearing app data for Google apps might work, but I'm not sure if it will last and prefer a more permanent solution.
So does anyone have similar problem and/or knows a fix?

This is not a new problem for me- I've has this problem over a month, ever since i came from stock.. Googgled the hell out of this too! I've built my own ROMs- i work in IT for a living! What am i missing??
Okay, I'll Tell you all the obvious things that I've checked that should make it work..
yes I have gmail sync checked under accounts
Right now I'm using aoip lollipop(so some of what I say below may be features it or lollipop has), but I've used aosp, aokp both on kit Kat- with the same problem.. deleted app data for gmail, reinstalled from play store..
In the gmail app I have gone to settings, clicked my gmail account, made sure it says notification enabled, notify all emails, chose my tone- even went into each label and turned it on.. I should be getting a ding every five seconds! Silence.
Even went into settings - under privacy, filter notifications, there's nothing listed. Under sounds and notification, I found gmail, and even set it as a priority notification.
I've hit volume up and made sure it says all.(it shows me to chose no notifications, priority, or all)
I get 0 gmail notifications.
So.. In stumped. I used to be annoyed by how often gmail would go off- but now I really need it, at LEAST for a few labels!
Hell, I'm getting notifications in this XDA app.. Why not gmail?? Oh, there's a Facebook one right now! Grrr...
Please, someone help, and no I'm no noob, so don't be a condescending jerk about it either.. I see too much of that on here anymore, which is why I've gone a MONTH+ trying to figure it out myself, before posting here..

Bumping this.. As a recognized contributor who has helped many people, I get inbox messages all the time.. Is there no one here willing to help ME out, the one time I actually need it!?!?!?
I'm on PAC ROM 4.4.4(different ROM than when I originally posted, same issue), no notifications for gmail with it turned on, picked a sound, and turned on notifications on EVERY label- I GET NOTHING - not on several other kit Kat Roms.. Download, reinstall, clear data.. Nothing has worked!
My email is incredibly important to me, especially right now.. Someone, please read above post and help me out..

I noticed that I'll get an email notification, then look at the notification on my lock screen. If I don't open it, and just turn the screen off again, I'll get repeat notification sounds every 10 mins for the same email message. Its especially bad when im listening to something in the car or at work and I can't immediately swipe away the notification. I want to turn this repeat notofication off because its really annoying, but I can't figure out how. Anyone know??

I know it's been a while, but did you ever figure this out? I just added some work alerts to my Gmail account and this has been driving me nuts - it's great to have it alert me every 10 minutes all night long that something happened for 1 minute at 2AM, but I'd love to be able to make it stop. It only does it for Gmail for me, not for my Exchange account that's also configured in the Gmail app.

Okay, so MAYBE... maybe some useful information on this?
I went into the Gmail settings online - through the Gmail web interface. I saw that IMAP was enabled, and I disabled that there. After that, any emails that came into Gmail seem to only notify me once, as expected.
So, I can't say that's 100% the absolute solution, but if your problem was in Gmail, it's something to try?

Ok so this doesn't seem to work for me. I still get the repeat notifications at seemingly random intervals. Just out of curiosity, do you have POP enabled or disabled? Also, don't we need IMAP enabled to be able to access emails from another email client (i.e. the Inbox or Gmail app)?
I have POP disabled as well.
You don't need IMAP enabled for the Gmail app. Other apps maybe - I guess it depends on how they talk to your Gmail account. I thought it needed to be enabled for the mail client on my Windows 10 machine to talk to it, but it's still working with IMAP off, so I guess not?
Hi all,
Apologies if this is the wrong place to post this but u couldn't find a relevant forum... On my 6p my Gmail all is not pushing email notifications through to me live a they come. I am having to open the app up and then pull down to refresh the app and then they will all appear.
If I leave it long enough eventually they will all come through. For example the other day I left it too see what would happen on a weekend day and at around 4pm my email went from nothing to flooded with emails going back as far as 5am.
If I use inbox it works fine but I prefer the Gmail app. I have even gone to the lengths of factory resetting my phone to see if that helps but it didn't.
Does any one know a fix for this please? Thanks in advance for any help.
yea it's a known issue. Google says they are working on it..

Try going to "App Notifications" and select "Priority"
For me, it needed to be whitelisted in the battery optimization menu. It seems like doze or app standby is killing the app.

It's funny, I can't seem to get mine to update the main account on the phone but every other account on the app sends push notifications. My work and school emails actually notify me of emails but my Gmail account just wont work...
I been noticing the same thing on my 6p looks like once you open Gmail it starts pushing after that.

Tried that and no change. The only push notifications are if I sign out and then sign in to another phone!
My Gmail (v6.01....) was working perfect until I updated to the lastest build (MHC19I), then Gmail stopped pushing notifications. I read on the google forums in the link posted above that reverting back to Gmail version 5.7... would fix this problem and it did. So, I turned off auto-updates for Gmail and will remain on version 5.7 until Google fixes this issue.
