1st day with the Note 2 - Galaxy Note II General

This won't be a lengthy post in anyway just something to share my initial thoughts. This device is absolutely awesome! It's everything an android device should be and more. Packed with features, lightning fast, an amazing camera and the best screen I've ever had the pleasure to use. I have no complains at all. It goes to prove how far Android has come and as we all know it'll only get better.

I just can't get over the sheer speed of the thing. The speed it loads apps is just phenomenal
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium

I don't have one yet, but I am curious to see if it maintains speed after 50-100 apps are installed.
My 2+ year old Samsung Epic 4G has GREAT speed out of the box with no apps on it, then it starts to slow wayyyyyyyyyyyyy down once I load the apps.

I have my 64gig microsd swapped with internal memory and its filled with apps. I have few pics. No video and few music. Only 5gig space left on thr card.
And its still lightning fast. Im guessing its not just the cpu but that 1gig rxtra ram is to thank for as well

thunderbolt...

I tried the Thunderbolt for 2 weeks and returned it and this is why... its about twice as thick and ALOT heavier than the fascinate. Battery wouldn't last all day when I barely used it while my fascinate would easily last 2 days with little use or a full day of heavy use. The screen on the fascinate looks a lot better than the thunderbolt. Another thing I noticed was that the thunderbolt was always a lot hotter then my fascinate even when it was at its regular clock speed and was regularly at 110 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. So if anybody is thinking about getting the thunderbolt I hope I saved you the $35 restocking fee.
Nice to hear that the grass isn't always greener!

Kernels will help with the battery life, and I've used it and I don't mind the heaviness at all. The main reasons why I'm not bothering to upgrade to it is because the screen isn't as nice, and the GPU doesn't seem as good as the Fascinate's. To expand on that GPU point, I used Neocore on my sister's Thunderbolt and my Fascinate at the same time, and my Fascinate performed smoother and quicker, however the final FPS score was apparently better on the Thunderbolt's, which I found strange. However visuals don't lie, while benchmarks sometimes do (especially quadrants).
Overall, I'd just wait for a decent dual-core phone on Verizon, rather than upgrading to the Thunderbolt. Galaxy S II anyone?

Hopefully they will update the Galaxy S II a little more often then they have been doing with the fascinate but I think Samsung's hardware makes up for everything
Im probly still goin to get one I would like more oppinions tho some ppl love it and some hate it xD I won't know till I try it my self

I havent had 2 weeks worth of trial with it, but my Daughter just got one. As with every phone, it has it's ups and downs. I agree with most of the OP, but it has some positives. The front camera for one, the 4G for another.
It is like heaving around a brick though in size and weight compared to the Fascinate.
I am not switching to anything anytime soon, but I would still wait awhile to see what the community does with the customizations before i would choose anything...
ha I don't care even if Galaxy 2 has 2ghz triple core, I wouldn't buy Samsung phone again. I'd rather have faster update than better hardware.

That might be because the fascinate is framerate limited to ~60 fps, it won't go above 60, even if the GPU could run it faster
Battery life for me has been similar to my fascinate and it was worth switching just to be able to use data while I'm using the phone. My area won't have LTE for another year but I use a lot of data and getting an unlimited plan while verizon still offers them seemed prudent.

Updraded to note from s2 review

I receive literally 0% lag and I can play n64 games that I couldn't on my S2. Battery life is better, better GPU, and ICS is gonna make this thing run smooth as butter.
If you are receiving lag, you probably haven't tweaked your system yet.

But this phone is 100% about the huge, high res screen! That puts it in a class completely above the GSII. I had both and the Note's not an upgrade, it's a completely different and IMHO much more desireable device!

Talking specifically about hardware, the main difference from the SGS2 is the screen. So what more did you expect? I'm really curious..
P.S: For me in the mobile tech world, 1" is a huge upgrade. Like going from 3.5" to 4.3" which is 0.8" upgrade. Then imagine going from 4.3" to 5.3"! Now that's an upgrade! Also the "lag" is a software-based fix. So no worries.
Going from a 4.3" 800x480 resolution screen to a 5.3" 1200x800 screen is a HUGE upgrade.
I expected the device to be much more zappier than the S2.

I understand you completely. And I do agree with you on the lag because other users report it as well. But is it really fair to compare a 7 months old phone gone throught many updates/optimizations with the Note?
As I said before the SGS2 was not as fast as it is now when launched. Anw it's the Note "fault" for the lag. Nothing a good update/optimization of the Note cannot fix.
So enjoy your great device and optimize it to your needs.
I really think the op bought the device for the wrong reason.

Anyone happy with their GS3

I got my gs3 and so far everything good not big upgrade compare to what I had, just the network but then again that's one of the major consideration on smartphones, phone is fast, camera great, 64 gb plus 16gb of storage and loving everything even the screen and the color (pebble blue) I see a lot people complaining like always when a phone is release(first is where the f*** is the phone and after they get it, does your phone do this?), anyways anyone else out there happy as well?

Can't you just search for the beats audio software mod that's been zipped up and flash it?
Criticism I heard/read about beats audio is that it's mostly software enhanced "gimmicks", E.Q stuff etc, and can be flashed to most phones...

I've heard the "Beats" audio, it's mostly enhanced bass and tweaked treble. Was not extremely impressed.
As for my new GSIII, I like it. Came from a flashed GSI. The improvement is alot more than coming from an older laptop to a state of the art one...
Yeah, I rooted it a few hours after getting it.
I came from the Aria, so the difference is pretty significant. I will say that I think the screen is ever so slightly too large. I think 4.3-4.5 inch displays are the perfect size.

Came from a gs2. Ran aokp and fluxxi kernel and it was smooth.
But the gs3 beats it by a mile.
Gps is faster. Battery life is way better. Data speed (lte) ****s on hspa and I love the screen... Plus the camera is very nice.
So overall the difference for me is pretty big.

Happy, mostly... Wish I wouldn't have had the evo to play with first, grr... That camera knocks this one's dingle in the dirt, the display is much nicer, and the devs are killing that thing, lol, I'm sitting here with my rooted phone and thumb up my arse wishing I knew how to dev cause we have not one Damn Rom... On the other hand I do like playing with Samsung as it's a tad different than HTC. It feels maybe a little better than evo in my hands, in a strange way, the phone feels a little cheaper so I'm not as worried to use it like it's intended. This thing gets hot and has performance issues and hopefully all my "issues" are all software related... It does have removable battery which is huge for me as I like to keep a few extra batteries charged and ready to go, HATE to be tethered to a wall. The sound on this thing is really loud and clean, really appreciate that... The digitizer is a bit spastic at times but that might just need tweaked as well... It does have 2GB's of ram:-~ lol, I don't know any Sammy devs either, did they all go to evo??? Lol, Need to flash something, going through withdrawals:-o I also don't have any of the display having the black spots or weird colors so maybe I got lucky for once... Ramble, ramble...

I have an evo lte too and it's screen + camera is beautiful. I just got my s3 in today and I'm sure they will be more devs when everyone is actually able to get the s3. I mean I pre-ordered mine on the 7th and it didn't even come until today with all the shortages.
Give it time, the devs will come here =)

there are always optimizations that can make thing a little better. most of the optimizations(like dalvik) on nexus phones would be propritary. plus the cpu is a more recent revision(among other things).

I agree. Android should be optimised for the Nexus range ONLY, like Apple do with iOS. Only then will it ever be a perfectly smooth experience.
If other companies wanna put out 15 Android phones a year, then they should do their own optimisations to ensure it runs properly.

They do do their own optimizations... they optimize their Android manufacturer skins (TouchWiz, HTC Sense, etc)
It may feel faster but that's only cos of the transitions HTC have added in, they have minimised many that are in stock android and sped up a few as well, thus overall giving the illusion that it runs faster :L

S4 worth the price?

Hey guys!
I am planning to buy a HTC One or a S4. (Oh another of those comparisons)
Well, the One is sold at SGD 488 (USD 385) for the 32 GB version, while the S4 (GT-I9505) is sold at SGD 578 (USD 457) for the 16 GB version.
Is the S4 really worth the extra price and lesser storage space?
I only have 8gb SD cards around, I care for heavy gaming like MC4 and GTA VC and good ROMs. I also take pictures and videos quite often, and I DO care for a SUPERSMOOTH UI and GREAT BATTERY LIFE.
Which should I get? Thanks in advance.

I don't own the HTC One, but I just hate its ugly face with the 2 ugly speakers on the top and on the bottom. Even its build quality seems to be what some people call "metal Premium"(that always make me laugh), its performance and its uni body design just doesn't appeal me. However it seems that its screen and its camera are very good.
Battery wise you can always get a second battery and a dock. This way you'll always have a second fully charged battery with the Samsung.
With the HTC, you'll have to rely on the charge of a single battery and/or frequent chargings.

I understand that the Nexus is very cheap and affordable when bought from the Play store, but in my country Singapore, it is not that cheap as there is no Google Play services available here apart from the app market.
Thanks for the suggestion though..

I have had the Nexus 4 too and in smoothness and speed when opening apps and widgets it is much faster than the S4. But then the N4 doesn`t have a 7GB rom + features But i missed some very usefull features offered by Samsung that i like to use and after a while i found the Nexus 4 a bit boaring. So overall i would say that the S4 is not fully worth the price of 650 euro`s that for 369 euro`s the Nexus 4 is a very good phone and offers the latest updates by Google.

During intense gaming, do any of you get any lag at all? I know the S4 has a great GPU, just wanna see it in context.

I run all my games flawlessly, a little lag happens rarely sometime, but globaly, it runs everything perfectly. I have the i9500 octacore. I don't try the i9505 one. From all the review and test I saw, i9505 suffer from little lag using Air features and has less fps in games. I tried Zombiewood(gameloft) on i9505 and i9500, when there are a lot of zombies who appear, the i9505 become really laggy whereas the i9500 still run flawlessly.
Well I am quite satisfied with mine.. I must say that it is fast enough and even faster with custom roms and kernels...
Camera is pretty good... Not in the dark but then again does not matter much
Quality of video is great and the sound is okay..
I have had an HTC before and it was okay but so sadly built...
The screen here is great... I have no problems with mine

I'm currently using unofficial 10.1 cm , and I'm really happy with it
Do the games experience frame drops when many instances are on the screen like what madawcisrich said?

Off topic.. I used Sony for years.. Love their design and UI... Which is why I have modded the stock message app so it has the smileys from Sony.. Just wanted to share as I saw your username
On topic... I use faux kernel and deodexed AME2 rom... There are custom roms but I loose my LTE no matter what I do, with the deodexed rom from djembey I can mod it as I want and I have pretty good battery life... All that can be black on my screen is black almost. As amoled don't use power on blacks

Thanks. Can someone using the GT-I9505 post the answer to my last question? Thanks! 3D performance is one of the deciding factors of me buying the S4.

3D performance.. i have not had any games that lag or anything...which one did you go for ?
I went for the S4, decided that I needed the 13 MP camera. Can we change the speed of animation to be faster (when opening apps, switchong between apps, etc) to be like the One's? I hate the speed of the S4, makes the phone look slow when it is not.
