thunderbolt... - Fascinate General

I tried the Thunderbolt for 2 weeks and returned it and this is why... its about twice as thick and ALOT heavier than the fascinate. Battery wouldn't last all day when I barely used it while my fascinate would easily last 2 days with little use or a full day of heavy use. The screen on the fascinate looks a lot better than the thunderbolt. Another thing I noticed was that the thunderbolt was always a lot hotter then my fascinate even when it was at its regular clock speed and was regularly at 110 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. So if anybody is thinking about getting the thunderbolt I hope I saved you the $35 restocking fee.

Nice to hear that the grass isn't always greener!

Kernels will help with the battery life, and I've used it and I don't mind the heaviness at all. The main reasons why I'm not bothering to upgrade to it is because the screen isn't as nice, and the GPU doesn't seem as good as the Fascinate's. To expand on that GPU point, I used Neocore on my sister's Thunderbolt and my Fascinate at the same time, and my Fascinate performed smoother and quicker, however the final FPS score was apparently better on the Thunderbolt's, which I found strange. However visuals don't lie, while benchmarks sometimes do (especially quadrants).
Overall, I'd just wait for a decent dual-core phone on Verizon, rather than upgrading to the Thunderbolt. Galaxy S II anyone?

Hopefully they will update the Galaxy S II a little more often then they have been doing with the fascinate but I think Samsung's hardware makes up for everything

Im probly still goin to get one I would like more oppinions tho some ppl love it and some hate it xD I won't know till I try it my self

I havent had 2 weeks worth of trial with it, but my Daughter just got one. As with every phone, it has it's ups and downs. I agree with most of the OP, but it has some positives. The front camera for one, the 4G for another.
It is like heaving around a brick though in size and weight compared to the Fascinate.
I am not switching to anything anytime soon, but I would still wait awhile to see what the community does with the customizations before i would choose anything...

ha I don't care even if Galaxy 2 has 2ghz triple core, I wouldn't buy Samsung phone again. I'd rather have faster update than better hardware.

That might be because the fascinate is framerate limited to ~60 fps, it won't go above 60, even if the GPU could run it faster

Battery life for me has been similar to my fascinate and it was worth switching just to be able to use data while I'm using the phone. My area won't have LTE for another year but I use a lot of data and getting an unlimited plan while verizon still offers them seemed prudent.

I do find a few of the Atrix's features pretty interesting, the fingerprint scanner is definitely badass, but with MotoBlur as the UI I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

What they probably meant to say was that Sprint is ideal because lack of competition. It only really has like 3 high end phones...And a lot of people have owned at least 2 out of those 3 at one point or another. Put the Atrix over on Sprint and guess where everyone would go...

Keeping the fascinate...

Ive decided to keep my fascinate even though have an available upgrade. Thanks to our excellent dev community here, ive never been happier w/ what's floating around in my pocket. I use it for everything, and its been easy to root and flash. I think im gonna wait for the second wave of the next gen phones.

Good Choice you've made there.
Just think there will be plenty of more phones soon that would be much better than Thunderbolt =D
Yeah it's not really worth an upgrade IMO until LTE is widespread and dual core phones are established.
The current generation of 2.2 ROMs are shockingly fast, stable, and battery thrifty.
I'll still give any vzw rep a hard time for the meagre support this phone had received, but secretly I am really pleased with the latest superclean. Thank goodness there was no exodus before the EB01 roms were so thoroughly tweaked.
It's thinner (ok slightly) than a thunderbolt and fully unlocked. I love that I can save it from the brink of brick with Odin. It'd be nice to have dual cameras or LTE but I have no justification for bailing before Q3 or Q4. I want a higher resolution screen and perhaps HDMI out.

I totally agree. The Tbolt isn't a bad phone, but I think having the "latest thing" has hyped it a bit more than its worth, especially with 4G not being everywhere. I checked it out at a Vzw store, and I love the size of my Fascinate compared to the tbolt. It fits a pocket a lot better, its just so small and thin. Screen is better too.
Overall though, I think waiting for more competition is a solid choice, but of course I don't blame anyone for wanting the newest phone out there, especially if they have 4G in their area.
Thinking about waiting for the next big thing makes me think about all the new phones coming out for T-Mobile. Too bad they'll be internet-less smartphones later on....

There is no reason for upgrading f right now if you have a current Gen top tier phone. It is going to be a while before developers start making apps for dual core phones or apps that require a lot of processing power.

I had an original Droid before the Fascinate. A lot of good qualities but the weight drove me nuts. Newer phones like the thunderbolt weigh quite a bit more and you feel it. With the ROMs we have now, it's hard to justify an upgrade.

[Q] Shift on Verizon?

Hi, I have a few questions about the Shift.
Will it work on Verizon? This is the most important to me, as I don't want my crappy DROID 2 anymore.(Great phone, just encrypted bootloader is no good to me)
Does it have the same processor as the G2? That's what I heard a while ago.
What's the GPU like? I like some mobile gaming, not really intensive gaming, but I also like nifty graphically accelerated features.
How much RAM does it have?
And what's the battery like?

1. Through some unsavory processes I shall not discuss, it could be made to work on verizon, but 4g would never work
2. Same processor as g2.
3. Works great, smooth as butter.
4. 372MB shows in android status for me
5. Battery is fantastic for me. at least as good as my way underpowered hero, and far better than an evo or my wife's epic.

I'm not worried about 4G. Would it get 3G?
As danaff37 said, the processor is the same (though a different SoC to support CDMA) and packs the same Adreno 205 GPU. Though not as sexy as the Nexus' SGX540, it's a decent enough GPU and plays everything you could find in the market smooth as butter.
As for the memory, not sure what's up with the reporting as I've seen 384MB bantered about as well, but all the hard specs show 512MB.
http://www.htc.com/us/products/shift-sprint#tech-specs
The battery life is nothing short of amazing. No, seriously. This thing will last you two days. I use this phone for business and pleasure, and as my alarm every single day and I honestly get two days out of a charge. Freakin awesome in every way. I love this phone.
If I could change anything, it would only be the LCD - upgrade to SLCD or AMOLED or something with a bit more pop. The screen is fine and definitely isn't anything to complain about, but there can always be something to improve, right? It's also worth noting that it is a rather heavy phone.
Honestly it can be done but its highly questionable from a legal stand point as it involves swapping the esn with one from a verizon phone along with all the other epst data. You can thank verizon for that. Back in the day they could have just added the esn to their database like metro pcs does and sprint used to do. Then reprogram for their network.

Your thoughts on Gingerbread release for the Samsung Vibrant.

Hello,
Just wanted your thoughts on the Official Gingerbread for Vibrant.
Do you think it will ever come?
Do you even care?
Any feedback is appreciated .
Cm7 is gingerbread so its already out lol
Need help with cm7? Pm me I can try to help
I don't think about it because I don't care. Gingerbread for the Vibrant 3G is the last thing on Samsungs list.
i have cm7 so i could care less! i will be getting the hercules in a few months anyway
The Gingerbread ROMS are already pretty smooth and nice so I no longer care about the stock one which they seem that don't even WANT to update.
Whatev's when I get the chance I will be buying the SGSII.
...When it doesn't cost a lung for me lol

Probably not coming since the Galaxy S 4G is essentially the successor to the original Vibrant. It would be a terrible sales decision for T-Mobile to support the older model, especially when the two are almost identical except for 4G, an FFC, and the lack of internal storage on the 4G.
I hate u guys.

Sorry, but current dual cores devices are useless and equally as fast as the Nexus S since ICS is yet to be released to optimize Android for multicore devices. You may as well get the one phone guaranteed to get ICS which will increase the Nexus's speed as well. The G2X looks like its not getting ICS and the Sensation would be bogged down by Sense again. Galaxy S2, maybe.
No offense because the 2.3 Roms out right now are smooth. But they straight murder the battery life. Why have a mobile device if you a charge every 8 hours.

No, I held out hope because Samsung promised and promised and promised, and there was a BIG media hullabaloo about the lack of timeliness on the 2.2 update.
Samsung has had exactly ONE press release saying they're putting 2.3 on "all" Galaxy S phones and nobody in the media is talking about a lack of update. Basically, it's as if no-one cares, Samsung included. Only a few people on forums are making any fuss about it, and everybody knows forums in general fly fairly low under the radar.
I still say we're not going to see it, and even if Samsung delivers it before the end of the year, it's far too little far too late. I have no desire to reward their failures and apathy with more purchases.
edit: Oh, and you can thank the ****ing SGS 4G for the lack of an update. IT'S getting 2.3 leaks left and ****ing right, and the rumor is from devs in the know that there isn't even 2.3 source code in existence for the Vibrant.

You are right the good thing about dual cores is one core is incharge of one process and other core incharge of another process. This would probably be best for me as I am constantly studying in school, and switch between apps really fast and single core just cant take from browser to xxxx app to xxxx app and back to browser without it getting stuck!?
If you got like 15 apps and just use it for ROMS and GPS and shiny fast things then by all means stick with the Galaxy S.

Can't you just search for the beats audio software mod that's been zipped up and flash it?
Criticism I heard/read about beats audio is that it's mostly software enhanced "gimmicks", E.Q stuff etc, and can be flashed to most phones...

I love it. It's the fastest phone I've ever held. More responsive than my Note. Screen is perfect size. Beautiful look and feel. Just awesome.

Definitely an upgrade over my Epic. Outstanding battery life and improved GPS is all I really ask for in a device and I got it.

Switched from the epic 4G touch and don't think that is is a huge upgrade. Still an awesome phone though but it was over hyped. Jumped from sprint to t-mobile due to data issues and don't regret it at all.

Love this phone. Came from a Captivate and the difference is like night and day. It's like when i went from ps3 to sli 580s.

I've heard the "Beats" audio, it's mostly enhanced bass and tweaked treble. Was not extremely impressed.
As for my new GSIII, I like it. Came from a flashed GSI. The improvement is alot more than coming from an older laptop to a state of the art one...
Yeah, I rooted it a few hours after getting it.
I came from the Aria, so the difference is pretty significant. I will say that I think the screen is ever so slightly too large. I think 4.3-4.5 inch displays are the perfect size.

Came from a gs2. Ran aokp and fluxxi kernel and it was smooth.
But the gs3 beats it by a mile.
Gps is faster. Battery life is way better. Data speed (lte) ****s on hspa and I love the screen... Plus the camera is very nice.
So overall the difference for me is pretty big.

Not A huge update over my Int galaxy note but I love it!

Happy, mostly... Wish I wouldn't have had the evo to play with first, grr... That camera knocks this one's dingle in the dirt, the display is much nicer, and the devs are killing that thing, lol, I'm sitting here with my rooted phone and thumb up my arse wishing I knew how to dev cause we have not one Damn Rom... On the other hand I do like playing with Samsung as it's a tad different than HTC. It feels maybe a little better than evo in my hands, in a strange way, the phone feels a little cheaper so I'm not as worried to use it like it's intended. This thing gets hot and has performance issues and hopefully all my "issues" are all software related... It does have removable battery which is huge for me as I like to keep a few extra batteries charged and ready to go, HATE to be tethered to a wall. The sound on this thing is really loud and clean, really appreciate that... The digitizer is a bit spastic at times but that might just need tweaked as well... It does have 2GB's of ram:-~ lol, I don't know any Sammy devs either, did they all go to evo??? Lol, Need to flash something, going through withdrawals:-o I also don't have any of the display having the black spots or weird colors so maybe I got lucky for once... Ramble, ramble...

I have an evo lte too and it's screen + camera is beautiful. I just got my s3 in today and I'm sure they will be more devs when everyone is actually able to get the s3. I mean I pre-ordered mine on the 7th and it didn't even come until today with all the shortages.
Give it time, the devs will come here =)
