Hi, I have a few questions about the Shift.
Will it work on Verizon? This is the most important to me, as I don't want my crappy DROID 2 anymore.(Great phone, just encrypted bootloader is no good to me)
Does it have the same processor as the G2? That's what I heard a while ago.
What's the GPU like? I like some mobile gaming, not really intensive gaming, but I also like nifty graphically accelerated features.
How much RAM does it have?
And what's the battery like?

1. Through some unsavory processes I shall not discuss, it could be made to work on verizon, but 4g would never work
2. Same processor as g2.
3. Works great, smooth as butter.
4. 372MB shows in android status for me
5. Battery is fantastic for me. at least as good as my way underpowered hero, and far better than an evo or my wife's epic.

I'm not worried about 4G. Would it get 3G?
As danaff37 said, the processor is the same (though a different SoC to support CDMA) and packs the same Adreno 205 GPU. Though not as sexy as the Nexus' SGX540, it's a decent enough GPU and plays everything you could find in the market smooth as butter.
As for the memory, not sure what's up with the reporting as I've seen 384MB bantered about as well, but all the hard specs show 512MB.

The battery life is nothing short of amazing. No, seriously. This thing will last you two days. I use this phone for business and pleasure, and as my alarm every single day and I honestly get two days out of a charge. Freakin awesome in every way. I love this phone.
If I could change anything, it would only be the LCD - upgrade to SLCD or AMOLED or something with a bit more pop. The screen is fine and definitely isn't anything to complain about, but there can always be something to improve, right? It's also worth noting that it is a rather heavy phone.
Honestly it can be done but its highly questionable from a legal stand point as it involves swapping the esn with one from a verizon phone along with all the other epst data. You can thank verizon for that. Back in the day they could have just added the esn to their database like metro pcs does and sprint used to do. Then reprogram for their network.

I would not get a phone that can't handle an SD card. The S looks sweet but thats it IMO. I had a Fascinate and I swore I would never get a Samsung device again because of the lack of software updates. I had an INC and liked it. Its all a matter of taste. I have had a Droid X and the original Droid and out of all the phones I like the EVO the best and my second would be the original Droid..go figure.
if you go verizon, get the thunderbolt.

Well honestly I think the Nexus S us a great device! it just comes down to what you like & what you need. Some people say to wait for Dual-core phones but personally I don't like the idea. So it's all up to you, when it comes down to it. Also take into account that the Nexus S didn't have a SD card slot, but not a big deal to me

I tried the Thunderbolt for 2 weeks and returned it and this is why... its about twice as thick and ALOT heavier than the fascinate. Battery wouldn't last all day when I barely used it while my fascinate would easily last 2 days with little use or a full day of heavy use. The screen on the fascinate looks a lot better than the thunderbolt. Another thing I noticed was that the thunderbolt was always a lot hotter then my fascinate even when it was at its regular clock speed and was regularly at 110 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. So if anybody is thinking about getting the thunderbolt I hope I saved you the $35 restocking fee.
Nice to hear that the grass isn't always greener!

Kernels will help with the battery life, and I've used it and I don't mind the heaviness at all. The main reasons why I'm not bothering to upgrade to it is because the screen isn't as nice, and the GPU doesn't seem as good as the Fascinate's. To expand on that GPU point, I used Neocore on my sister's Thunderbolt and my Fascinate at the same time, and my Fascinate performed smoother and quicker, however the final FPS score was apparently better on the Thunderbolt's, which I found strange. However visuals don't lie, while benchmarks sometimes do (especially quadrants).
Overall, I'd just wait for a decent dual-core phone on Verizon, rather than upgrading to the Thunderbolt. Galaxy S II anyone?

I havent had 2 weeks worth of trial with it, but my Daughter just got one. As with every phone, it has it's ups and downs. I agree with most of the OP, but it has some positives. The front camera for one, the 4G for another.
It is like heaving around a brick though in size and weight compared to the Fascinate.
I am not switching to anything anytime soon, but I would still wait awhile to see what the community does with the customizations before i would choose anything...
ha I don't care even if Galaxy 2 has 2ghz triple core, I wouldn't buy Samsung phone again. I'd rather have faster update than better hardware.

That might be because the fascinate is framerate limited to ~60 fps, it won't go above 60, even if the GPU could run it faster
Battery life for me has been similar to my fascinate and it was worth switching just to be able to use data while I'm using the phone. My area won't have LTE for another year but I use a lot of data and getting an unlimited plan while verizon still offers them seemed prudent.

G2X bootloader is wide open (Cyanogen's next device!), Sensation is locked. So choice is pretty obvious.
I haven't decided yet. I need to see some reviews and "usability benchmarks" (ie: how well the devices respond in general usage). The Vibrant puts down good benchmarks, but fails in everyday usability (it's laggy to respond, even with bionix, voodoo kernels, overclock). I think Samsung's source is to blame; they just can't write good code.

Yeah but that's why we flash in the first place, to get our phones working the way they should have shipped. Though I understand, I'm slowing down a bit on the constant flashing. I just wouldn't expect a phone that works just the way you want out of the box. Though to answer your question, the G2x seems to have the lasting power, with vanilla Android, Tegra 2, a swift 2.3 update planned, and an unlocked bootloader if/when support is dropped and you decide to flash it to extend its life. However, I've heard some QC issues, bugs with it, not that HTC doesn't have its own problems with that.
Does the g2x have its own forum now? I saw the optimus 2x forums, but I dont know if its for the g2x. I wonder if its already out in europe because there are roms for the phone.

The non removable battery isn't a deal breaker believe it or not! Just look at most tablets........they got a set combo that you can press if you get stuck in a bootloop or whatever
I would go with the one x if I was on At&t BUT that's just me.............shop around that's my advice to you dude! At the end of the day, we're not the ones that are going to be stuck with that phone....is YOU! I could tell you get this, get that BUT you got to like it........everything else is a matter of opinion!
GOOD LUCK!!
Awesome thanks for the fast responses. And that was my big worry with the removable battery that I wouldn't have any option if I got in a boot loop or a rom acts funny and I need to hard reset. If there is a hard reset feature then I think I'm sold. But I'm still not sure lol.

I got an evo when they first came out and have flashed everything to it. My HTC EVO 4G(I love saying it) has been an incredible phone but I recently upgraded to a Galaxy Note and I Love it. Its huge just like the evo used to be huge but I am used to it now and all phones feel tiny. The pen believe it or not is actually pretty useful, its fun to draw with but I also take a lot of notes and it has helped me out immensely with my business.
Yes its a tad slower than the htc one x and I do miss sense, but I need me an ext sd and removable battery. If i didn't like options i'd get an iphone. whats up with that HTC? that's seriously the reason I went with the Note.
but I recently bricked/semi bricked/softbricked my Note upgrading to ICS and that sucked but I fixed it and finally got the new official ICS and cannot be happier. I installed nova launcher over crapwiz and now im in heaven.

I heard that too, but I dont think mine feels cheap at all the build quality is good and the parts on the inside dont feel too quick. Sometimes i cant believe how much faster it is than my EVO. I am able to run anything like grand theft auto really smooth. I do have the international version which is faster that the ATT version so that kinda suck for the OP.
and the new evo doesnt have that feel of being or having something that no other phone has. When the OG Evo came out it was one of a kind nothing could compare to it. The Note is the only phone that really stands out to me, More than the Galaxy s3 since its a bit similar to the htc one x.
Thats just me though, I like big phones. and i cant stress this enough that you do get used to the size unless you have small hands but my 8 years old niece can use it just fine.
i left to AT&T for the galaxy note - if you have LTE in your area it is SICK!

SGS3. NO DOUBT. its fast, flawless, performs flawlessly, the software and user interface is amazing, the Samsung version of a way better siri, and the touch sync to other sg3 and just all of that. The e4glte, honestly the user interface is garbage, after having an EVO, sense is boring, and the LTE looks even more boring than sense 3.0. The sense clock is the only cool looking thing and I have it on my evo. I say you would be a fool to get the E4G LTE. 2 years or boringness and blandness. SG3, 2 years and maybe just save your upgrade because you love the worlds best phone to much.
The decision??? Lebron went to the Heat. I am going to sit back and watch how the development takes off, one of the two will draw more attention, just need to wait and see. Going to let the development make my decision!
I think the heavyweight developers seem to be heading to the sgsIII.Plenty of good ones on the Evo, don't get me wrong, but I would give the edge there to the Samsung.
Me personally I have had really good experiences with HTC and I actually care less about exactly who is doing what on the custom ROM scene vs how good is the handset. Samsung may have the edge in many categories there too, but I use my phone as a camera a lot and the camera is looking pretty darn good on the Evo.

Idc about roms anymore. When I get the gs3, it will be flawless and would need no root or changes

I personally prefer HTC over Samsung, mainly because I owned a Samsung Moment.

It depends where you live. So everyone, please don't say which ever is better because cell towers in some states work better than some in others. My HTC radios suck compared to Samsung phones around here on Sprint
Sgs3 or LG eclipse 4g LTE, only phones I'd consider upgrading too until thus years nexus pokes it head out

Because it's a last generation device, why would it be in a next generation equation? That's like asking why the ET4g isn't in the equation and its better than the gNex

Lies! Mine did once. Don't blame the phone, its the battery maker. HTC just sticks their name over the makers
thanks evil! I wasnt tracking generation devices..just knew I liked the gnexus, im far off of an upgrade anyway..sgsIII looks BOMB though!
