I'm tired of being treated like "the unwashed masses"

When did XDA become the land of "just wait while we sort this out for you". I came here to get my hands dirty. I came here to **** up my phone to all kingdom come in the name of hackery. This is ridiculous. Everyone shared what they had and everyone knew the risks. Now we have threads getting closed because something might brick radios? I've bricked much worse and lived. I've never seen a community so stifled by moderation and developers caught up in a secret-club-house mentality.

While I agree with you..can we please post this in the right section?

In the hopes that this topic gets taken seriously, I'll add a comment that's actually relevant.
I've been standing by and watching this whole froyo episode play out without much comment because I'm relatively new to the community, but I totally agree with OP's mentality. XDA is about hacking, hacking is inherently risky. All people have to do is be very clear about the risks and there's no reason to hold anything back.
The "but there will be a flood of noobs" excuse is a complete cop-out on the part of the developers and the moderators. The solution is very simple: Have one clear and concise guide to un-bricking your phone stuck and take a firm "you're responsible for what you do" stance.

Amen, thats what I liked about the rhodium, the forums werent congested with childrens ****. Back to business.

Every forum does usually take that turn.. but posting **** in the wrong section doesn't help.

Epic forums are ridiculous,man I wish I got the Vibrant insteead.Yeah Epic progress is slow but if someone dont want to release something for whatever reason its their right no to do so,and after trying out these froyos is see why they don't release them.Just wait when devs polish up these froyo leaks I'm sure they will release them.
But for people that want betas devs should post beta test versions on twitter for those that can't wait,so these forums wont be havin all these bull**** ass posts.

If they don't want to release it then don't talk about it either. It's just crowd whoring and adds nothing to the forum. If you don't want to have people yelling at you for not releasing then don't drop hints that you have something they don't.
If they didn't basically tease us we wouldn't be aware there was anything we're missing.
Mods try to remember you're here to keep things civil. Not censor things like some xda big brother. I can see cutting out piracy threads. But the dk05 threads don't fall under that in most countries.

The secret clubhouse mentality by the devs regarding cooking their own roms needs to stop. Simple as that. It completely goes against the entire point of Open Source and a lot of the time they are violating the GPL as well as other licenses. I've had it; I'm just going to start reporting GPL violations to the FSF and let their lawyers deal with you if you want to be stupid.
And for those devs who get pissy because someone took their work, modified it, and re-released it? What do you think Android is in the first place? It is a flavor of Linux. Just like how Ubuntu is based off of Debian or CentOS is based off of RHEL, they're all derivatives of each other all the way to the same common kernel source that is still, to this day, maintained by Linus Torvalds. So stop having hissy fits over "stolen" work. You stole it in the first place. Plus, you're required to make sources available. Why is it so hard for you people to get that through your head?

Hiding and keeping stuff from the community is completely against the spirit and purpose of this place. But, ya know, it's what happens when the egos are the ones that get their hands on it first.

Heh nothing else seems to get the idea that this is a community and the code isn't theirs through their heads. Maybe this will. You'de swear these guys were windows devs. Closed solutions cannot be implemented from gpl code. Derivative works must be shared according to the contract you agree to when using gpl code.

I think you are pushing it a little too much..they are not violating the GPL..the GPL does not FORCE people to distribute content they received..it just ALLOWS a person the right that once the content is received to distribute it...an example would be the DK05..once he got his hands on it, he automatically had the right to legally distribute it...
BUT Android also is not fully under GPL..the kernel I think is...Android itself is under the Apache License.

Everybody needs to just calm down. As far as I've checked Froyo still isn't out officially for the Epic. You guys are getting all worked up over some leaked beta software and licensing issues that really wouldn't apply to software that was leaked. There will be plenty of quality offerings when the official software is released. Samsung/Sprint haven't release the software or source yet. Just because you own the phone doesn't give you the right to have their internal beta software. If an xda dev has it and feels that it isn't worthy to post on the forums, that is their right. Somebody was b*tching about GPL infractions. Sure, ROMs derived from the released versions need to be compliant with the GPL. As far as leaked beta software, the dev could be breaking a NDA (non discloser agreement) to post any code or software they have obtained early. Doing so as a developer, is serious business and not to be taken lightly. Any stuff we get on the forums early is bonus, but NOT your right.

We will all sing a different tune once froyo is released officially and roms are being pumped out everyone will be happy until we find out we aren't getting 2.3 lol I just think people are tired of being on 2.1 and getting a bit antsy..patience

When froyo was leaked for the evo the roms never stopped coming. Iwas hoping to see the same here..there's talk of bugs and what not so we HAVE to wait(I don't mind) for an official release before we can talk about what direction the epic dev community is moving in

[PETITION]Sign if you want to make your own decisions about potentially unsafe leaks!

UPDATE: In the potential circumstance that a leak has been watermarked and job(s) are at stake then I think I speak for everyone in saying that a ROM should not be publicly released unless the watermark has been removed (if that's impossible, then it still shouldn't be released). This petition is not unique to the DK05 leak; it goes for any leak that is not watermarked. The reason I am posting it now is because people have cited bricking problems over watermarking in DK05.
This thread was made to unify and organize the voices of those who feel that it is our own responsibility to decide whether or not we should flash potentially unsafe ROMs, specifically leaks.
We feel that it is NOT the responsibility of the developers or the XDA staff to protect us from potentially unsafe ROMs.
We have seen that at least some staff, and at least some developers feel that it is their responsibility to protect us from potentially unsafe ROMs.
We would like to firmly but kindly remind these people that we and we alone should decide what gets flashed onto our phones.
We would like to remind them that we can and will take full responsibility for whatever happens when we flash these ROMs.
We would like to remind them that we can and will use the various guides to restore our phone if something goes seriously wrong.
Finally, we would like to remind them that those people who don't take full responsibility for flashing a potentially unsafe ROM can and should be dealt with through methods that do not impact the community at large.

Signed... I don't understand what the problem was with releasing dk05? I am running it just fine. Now if I remember correctly we could brick our phones from flashing to anything not just betas. Isn't that what the devs always put in the op "I do not take responsibility if your phone gets bricked due to flashing this rom" or something along those lines. I do not see why nothing could be said like that and just gave us the damn leak in the first place.. oh well though, I got it anyways. Thanks.

All the excuses we have been given r just that...excuses...how about we as a community educate..well ... What the OP is leaving out in this "petition" is the fact that these leaks are watermarked with specific code that allows "the powers that be" to easily discover the source of said leak.
So basically, everyone signing this "petition" is demanding that developers share their internal/confidential leaks with the public because you have a selfish sense of entitlement, and don't give a rat's a** if someone loses their job over it. Behavior like this, which is 98% exclusive to Android, is precisely why I waited several years before leaving Windows Mobile.
/end my rant as an Android user and someone with a common sense of decency. The preceding post was done not as a Moderator, and is strictly my personal observation.

While I agree with you 100%, when developers post all over the forums and brag about roms that they have and how awesome they are while refusing to share with the rest of us, that is pretty ****ty and does nothing but piss people off. This has happened with EVERY SINGLE LEAK. Even in the thread where the DK05 rom was leaked, the very people denouncing the leak were bragging about having DK17, i mean seriously? The reason that this behavior didn't occur with Windows Mobile was that the devs actually EXPLAINED to their users what was going on and updated them instead of keeping them in the dark. I have no problem with Devs not releasing the roms, but if you are going to brag about having them to the rest of the forum, you better start a damn thread and at least give us updates on what the rom fixes or breaks and the cool features that Samsung is including in said rom.

Even if it's only a thread, you are still demanding. And unless you are that dev's significant other or their boss, you have absolutely no right to do this.

Finally a reply with an argument... Here is the deal. Even if they are hitting you in the face with the leak, that still does not entitle you to have it nor you have any right to demand it. Period, there is no way around it. Nor you, me, the other admins, or anyone in this place can force a dev to do otherwise.
As for the "teaser" threads, I agree... I personally don't like those as more often than not, they are used to drive up donations, which is why Rule 11 is currently being amended to prevent this from happening. It is like eating a 12 oz stake in front of a starving child, not cool. However, there is a thin line between a teaser and a closed beta. This was supposed to be a closed beta, and it ended up being a leaked leak.

Please don't assume that this is about DK05/any watermarked leak (if DK05 is in fact watermarked). I've updated the first post.
I'll take this opportunity as my 1 post to sign my own petition. Everyone else please return to normal.

Well what is the real case here because I also read a post saying that the exact same korean dudes info is on the SPRINT stock di18 which,if true, would leave all argument moot. So maybe someone will be kind enough to try and confirm compare stock di18, dg27 etc

The point of this petition is that people don't want to be "protected" in that way..it is unrelated to the watermarks or the demands...It is understandable if something is not released due to a watermark that can effect someone's job...BUT if the said case is merely "its for your own good cause you can brick your phone" thats what the petition is about and strictly that..lets not bundle multiple issues in 1.
That said, this should have been a poll rather then people responding as it was bound to get discussion within it >.>

Heres the part about the "Korean dude" whos name is on DK05 and DI bklah blah whatever.All that is is the name of the machine that built the build in the first place thats all it is nothing more its not the owner of the leaked build just the name of the machine that built it.

Its a petition..to try to express the beliefs of the community..as stated its a different issue from the watermark or demand..if the dev doesn't want to release thats fine too..its their choice..but one thing we do demand is respect as based on rule 2.5 (if I am interpreting it correctly)...so we don't want an excuse of "We aren't releasing it because it will brick your phone and you won't know what to do" kind of thing...

i haven't posted very much in these forums, and don even have an epic yet. i plan on getting one in feb and was doing research since i haven't been on a stock rom for more than a day in years.
that being said i just wanted to say that no one owes any of us anything. the devs in this community are not here to be your slaves. non of us have any right to ask when a rom will be completed, demand any leaked information, or even have access to this site at all. i don't know about you but i haven't paid a penny for this site and I've gotten plenty of benefit by using the information here.
I just want to say thank you to all the devs on these forums and keep up the good work. i look forward to flashing a customer rom on my future epic as i have on my kaiser, rhodium and aria.

You are not out of line in wanting respect, once it has been earned. For the record, I am not trying to say that is the case here. But resorting to demands and petitions will not help the overall situation. If you or anyone else feels like someone is behaving in a questionable or suspicious/cocky manner, please use the Report Post option, and we will review and address the situation accordingly.

I must say, it sounds like you were harrassing the rep.
A Guy my brother works with was just complaining about his Droid X due to the 2.2 release he received two weeks ago. I understand why the devs want the release but for the rest of us, patience will serve us best.
There is a GPS fix on the forum. Do some searching and enjoy the fruit of our developers' labors.

Dude, you are a freakin ignorant dumbass. The only people that have info on the ETA of the 2.2/2.3 update are the Samsung developers and Verizon rom builders, not customer support. Please do yourself a favor and shutup or work a customer facing job to realise how it is to be not in the loop.

I really hope you're joking, but judging by the rest of your posts, I'm sure you aren't. In the admittedly short time I've had playing with iPhones, I can honestly say that they're absurdly overhyped. They really don't do anything better than any other phone on the market. Plus, Apple is content with repackaging the same thing(more or less) time after time with relatively minor tweaks and adjustments to keep their consumer base hooked. The iPhone isn't going to save anybody from anything, because by the time it actually comes around to Verizon, there be even more advanced phones on VZW(dual core, 4g, 2.3, etc). The iPhone will just seem antiquated by comparison(to the ones that actually give a damn about phone hardware/software) and that's an honest fact, not me being biased or a fanboy. This is just my 2 cents, it's kind of ridiculous for you to come and post that in an Android phone section of the forum. On topic, I have to agree with bwheelies. Working in an area where I have to deal with irate customers daily really gives me another perspective on things like this. It's really difficult to answer questions people have when the info hasn't trickled down to me and they continually press the issue and get pissed about it.

I'm really starting to think that a moderator on here should create a general rants and raves section like Craigslist, that way if we want a good laugh or to read something completely rediculous, we could go there instead of it flooding the important forums. People like you should be banned from here. Do us all a favor and search next time, you will see that there are at least 3 other posts almost identical to yours that you could've given your 2 cents two.

Honestly I would hang up on you too. Why is it that people are so rude to customer service reps? Just imagine if you had to deal with people that are rude while you're doing everything you're allowed to, to try helping them. She's not the company, she had nothing to do with the software or hardware or the timeliness providers divulge.

Guys The iphone will always lack in hardware sooner or later to Android.... a new android phone gets announced every day. But since the iphone was released no new phone has beat it in total hardware performance. And as far as doing anything better than android.....well it just offers more. what good is a OS when there are no applications on it.

You think we know everything and that we just like to keep information from you to piss you off. We tell you what we know, and we often don't know much since we're JUST customer service reps. We're not the software developers, we're not corporate, and we often learn about things just before you do as the consumer.

EDIT: Actually I think they are suggesting that Samsung is updating its Epic 4g page. Hopwever, when I follow AC's link it just goes to a blank page with a little form at the bottom asking if I was satisfied with the content. I said "no".

This announcement of EB13 is good for us Epic owners, but that does not effect all Galaxy S owners. I think the better news is that John is here to make sure we don't have another debacle like this whole Froyo update. Samsung realizes the influence we have and to have a line of communication between a Manufacturer and a dev forum is unprecedented.

IF the poll he is compiling is the 'big news', then if it actually bears fruit, that could be useful. Not sure that is the announcement. I think he shot himself in the foot promising an announcement, maybe official collaboration between him and svetius is a big deal to him, but until it bears fruit, it's not that impressive to the average XDA user. This leads me to believe that the poll may not be the announcement, just another part of the work he is trying to accomplish here. Give him a shot, and dont ***** about froyo, he said its on the list, wait and see what he does.
Silly flaming about froyo on here is only going to get threads closed, and give him an excuse to ignore the issue. If you must, do it on the social network sites, or PM him, then you can get your temp ban, and threads stay open...
As speculated in one of the general threads, (ran out of thanks if I didnt catch it), he MAY be sent here as a distraction, to keep us off twitter, FB, and the other retarded social networking forums. He is from that dept, maybe he is cleaning it up by distracting us...? Kind of an elaborate conspiricy, but who knows. Those that have been doing the twitter/FB campaigns, dont let up, it may be working... but keep the crazy comments there, as it will draw more attention to the unrooted masses...

The first part of your post was spot-on....the above though is way too tinfoil hat and outside the realm of the feasible or credible. There's no way anyone in a position like his is going to come here or elsewhere to simply serve 'as a distraction'. Frustrations especially amongst we Epic owners are understandable to a point, but the above manner of thinking goes beyond frustration and crosses the line into bizzare paranoia.
It seems fairly obvious and certainly logical what's happened with John to this point, and in hindsight predictable too given the angst here; he came primarily with the hopeful purpose to collaborate with the people actually doing ROM/device development here, to try and establish a relationship with these folks perhaps to mutual benefit for both current and future product/customers. Unfortunately, the initial implementation came a bit too soon and without enough forethought and, it seems, without communicating his intentions and initiating a dialogue with the XDA owners first. That, combined with (a.) some obvious communication 'ambiguity' (at best) on John's part and (b.) making the mistake of thinking such a dialogue should be brought forth and attempted with the open masses of the entire membership of XDA down to the end user level and all the kneejerk 'angry white noise' therein, proved to be a disaster.
None of that means the desire and effort behind what John/Samsung is attempting is without value or merit though. And fortunately, it now sounds like they're going to try isolating his interaction purely with the dev/material contributers that actually matter, and hopefully they'll do so privately as well to keep everything filtered from the mob mentality so that an actual civil, mature interactive process can take place. Besides, a great deal of what he was barraged with in the central 'General' thread were issues that are mired on the carrier level anyway at least when it comes to the remaining GS phones still lacking Froyo.
And honestly, any information the end users want to hear, if he can even provide such, would be better received and trusted if its handed down through already established devs & moderators in each forum who have the history and respect of the membership at large to some degree. Otherwise you get what you've gotten the last 24 hours; a mindless, angry lynch mob mentality of kneejerk frustration being directed at one sole employee who (a.) had nothing personally to do with the cause of said frustration, and (b.) furthermore actually dares to come in good faith & intention wishing to bridge the divide. Sometimes, the hounds become so rabid and lose their minds so much that they try to gnaw off the good intentioned hand that attempts to try and help or feed them, and that's pretty much what happened in John's case.

Although it would be cool, I highly doubt that XDA is doing and hands-tying here. The ball has bee Sammy's court for a while now.
XDA has been walking the walk, not talking the talk.
If the 'huge announcement' was to announce the efforts of "collaboration", fine, we can move forward.
If a MOD came and commented YAY or NAY, then they could close this thread, and it's purpose would be served.

When I think of "huge announcement", I think something really relevant to the target crowd that either appeases are very much wanted need, or announcing something crazy that gets everyone excited.
If either of these things fails to happen, I consider this a major PR gaffe, that could be saved be some out of the ordinary effort by Sammy.

When i first read this i was stunned, i unloaded a lot of frustration out in another thread but that didn't do anything other than make me feel better, temporarily. I have another year with the Droid X and don't want to just put up with it until i can upgrade. I've enjoyed my Droid X very much and would like it to continue that way but the development on it seems to be dieing. I still see there being much more to do to the device, considering Gingerbread leak was just released and rooted. I don't know how many people flashed the leak but i have... and it makes a huge difference in performance. I am no dev or anything, the most knowledge i have on this concept is rooting, flashing roms, and sbf'ing when something goes wrong. So i just want an idea of what everyone else is doing now that P3droid has said what he had to say. Do you believe it?

This is my question ...why would someone who had this info release a "leak" of the rom they can track down? And still have links up for d/l?
If that was me id advice people not to upgrade to GB and wait for an official release then figure out how to root it... just how they figured out how to root the nexus s g2 mt4g atrix thunderbolt ...its possible ..

I agree with 100% jeezy. I understand why Verizon would be upset about the tethering, but we all do pay for UNLIMITED data. Verizon is just upset that we found a loophole instead of paying for their wireless tethering. And it is a little fishy that P3droid will be the one person to give us a leak and then immdiately tell us this information. I did take a peak at his twitter the night that he posted that information and aparently he was drunk...hmm.... No disrepect to P3Droid, he may be telling the truth about all of this but we can't tust anyone anymore, especially after the recent rumor that someone cracked the bootloader.

And there is 70 views on this thread already and only 2 votes. Please people, we want everyones input on this topic. Obviously other people are curious too if there are already 70 views lol. If you want to comment and give your opinion, thats great too, but all i ask is if you make those 2 clicks to vote.

If someone honestly truely believes this and not just from a fear campaign I pity them. Verizon and Motorola are coming off saying they don't care if your Zoom is rooted they will upgrade it anyways. Also every Verizon rep I have talked to have no clue what I was talking about and the most recent one went a step farther and claimed it would probably have been a breach of contract on their end.

Honestly, until I see some news on it, it's just a rumor. I did not upgrade to GB because I would rather wait for some development, but the bottom line is that this is just a rumor.
People have beat the whys, ifs, and hows into the ground so there is no reason for me to talk about them.
If you're so concerned that you have to make multiple threads, polls, and cry to your mother, SBF back to stock and enjoy your stock ROM as best you can. If you were on GB and this is true, VZW already has your MEID so you're ****ed one way or the other. So the only thing I can say is just chill out, crack open a beer, go to work, watch some baseball, jerk off... whatever you do in your spare time that relaxes you. If this whole thing is going to happen it's going to happen and worrying about it won't solve anything. You're already screwed on your current phone if everything P3 said goes down.
Most people here know there are certain risks involved when they mod there phones so if this all goes down, I'll just buy a new one and deal with the wenching from my wife. **** happens; deal with it.

I've been using custom ROMs since the days of WinMo 6.5. Unfortunately, my first phone was not hacked due to lack of interest. I think it was the Samsung SCH-i760. While it was not hacked, people were sending this $600 phone bricked under a warranty replacement. I'm sure not as many as the Droid X's being sent back from complete noobies coming here and bricking their phones, but I digress.
Warranty replacements due to tampering are nothing new; it's been going on for YEARS, even prior to Smart Phones. In fact, I remember people warranty replacing their RAZRs trying to get rid of the Verizon UI.
Whatever happens, happens. Just go with it.

Honestly if everything is true and we will be no longer be able to make our droid Phones OUR droid phones I'm just going to get a plan with a cheap carrier and use this as a multimedia device and leo it mine.

You are very correct. You can do whatever you want with your device and Verizon cannot do anything to your device about it. HOWEVER, they can do whatever they want with THEIR service. As stated in the terms of service that EVERYONE here agreed to, in section 2 part d of reasons they can terminate or suspend your service, if you " modify your device from its manufacturer's specifications" they have the right to stop providing you service.
So yes you can modify your device to hell and back but they DO NOT have to give you service for it. So all of you can stop saying Verizon had to tell you something or can't do this. THEY ALREADY TOLD US.
