Lovely tech support (She hung up) - Fascinate General

Look at this great support I got. Copy and pastied responses several times. Apparently we all should call the galaxy hot line or something.
info: Please wait for a Samsung Agent to respond.
info: You are now chatting with 'Elena'
Elena: Hi, thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. How may I help you today?
Customer: My family bought three fascinates in anticipating the ultimate android operating system called Froyo 2.2. When will I get this update? Will I get it this year at least or do I have to wait another year?
Elena: I understand that you want upgrade the device from Android 2.1 to 2.2 . Am I correct ?
Customer: Yes that is what I mean.
Elena: Unfortunately there is no update available at this time for your phone model, nor is there an estimated date of one being released. We are unable to speculate when/if a software revision might be available due to the fact that this might lead to inaccurate information and confusion.
Elena: Should this become available, it will be posted on our website in the Samsung Download Center.
Elena: Samsung is working on these and we will release the software soon.
Customer: Thats not even you typing, you copied and pasted that, I saw that exact response on forums.
Customer: I regret buying 3 of these phones.
Elena: I can understand your situation and how frustrated you are at this moment.
Customer: I will never buy another samsung product again.
Elena: I would have surely helped , if I had any other information regarding them.
Elena: As this is a basic level support we have limited access to our database. I have provided all the information that are available in my database.
Customer: You do have more information, you are with holding it from me.
Customer: Then let me talk to someone higher up please.
Elena: However, I suggest you please contact our Samsung Customer Support Team. You can reach our Galaxy handset support team at : 1-877-392-4252,Mon-Fri: 7 AM - 9 PM (CST), Sat: 9 AM - 6 PM (CST). They will be glad to help you with this.
Customer: Honestly, it 2011, Froyo was released last year and you can't even give me an eta on when I will get 2.2/2.3, thats disgraceful.
Customer: Please if I can talk to your manager that would be great.
Elena: I apologize, if I had the information available with me I would have surely provided you in this chat session.
Customer: Then may I please talk with your manager.
Elena: Tha manager is only available in Phone support only.
Elena: Yes, please contact our Samsung Customer Support Team they will transfer the call to the Manager.
Customer: Do you have the information as to why I DON'T have 2.2?
Elena: I apologize, we don't have that information available in my database.
Customer: I highly doubt that, I know how customer service works. You can make the call for me and find out the information I need, please do so.
Elena: I am really sorry, if I had the access to do that i will definitely arrange a call for you in this regar.
Elena: regard*
Elena: I don't mean to rush you, but I haven't had a response from you. Are we connected?
Customer: Do you have the information as to why the Galaxy S has 2.2 in the UK and other countries but the phones based off of it don't?
Customer: Such as the epic, captivate, vibrant, and of course the fascinate?
Elena: No, I don't have that information available, that is the reason I asked you please contact our next level support so that they will be glad to help you with this.
Customer: Fine
Elena: Is there anything else that I can assist you with?
Elena: It was a pleasure assisting you. Thank you for contacting Samsung Technical Support. If you have a minute, please click on the blue “X close” button to receive a transcript of your chat and fill out a brief survey to help us serve you better. Have a wonderful day!
Customer: Yes

To top it off, she HUNG UP ON ME. I was about to ask if an update would coem to fix gps. Oh well switching to HTC next time.

I must say, it sounds like you were harrassing the rep.
A Guy my brother works with was just complaining about his Droid X due to the 2.2 release he received two weeks ago. I understand why the devs want the release but for the rest of us, patience will serve us best.
There is a GPS fix on the forum. Do some searching and enjoy the fruit of our developers' labors.

Dude, you are a freakin ignorant dumbass. The only people that have info on the ETA of the 2.2/2.3 update are the Samsung developers and Verizon rom builders, not customer support. Please do yourself a favor and shutup or work a customer facing job to realise how it is to be not in the loop.

I really hope you're joking, but judging by the rest of your posts, I'm sure you aren't. In the admittedly short time I've had playing with iPhones, I can honestly say that they're absurdly overhyped. They really don't do anything better than any other phone on the market. Plus, Apple is content with repackaging the same thing(more or less) time after time with relatively minor tweaks and adjustments to keep their consumer base hooked. The iPhone isn't going to save anybody from anything, because by the time it actually comes around to Verizon, there be even more advanced phones on VZW(dual core, 4g, 2.3, etc). The iPhone will just seem antiquated by comparison(to the ones that actually give a damn about phone hardware/software) and that's an honest fact, not me being biased or a fanboy. This is just my 2 cents, it's kind of ridiculous for you to come and post that in an Android phone section of the forum. On topic, I have to agree with bwheelies. Working in an area where I have to deal with irate customers daily really gives me another perspective on things like this. It's really difficult to answer questions people have when the info hasn't trickled down to me and they continually press the issue and get pissed about it.

I'm really starting to think that a moderator on here should create a general rants and raves section like Craigslist, that way if we want a good laugh or to read something completely rediculous, we could go there instead of it flooding the important forums. People like you should be banned from here. Do us all a favor and search next time, you will see that there are at least 3 other posts almost identical to yours that you could've given your 2 cents two.
so fresh and so superclean.

Honestly I would hang up on you too. Why is it that people are so rude to customer service reps? Just imagine if you had to deal with people that are rude while you're doing everything you're allowed to, to try helping them. She's not the company, she had nothing to do with the software or hardware or the timeliness providers divulge.

I'm pretty sure you're directing that at me, so I'm going to reply accordingly. The only thing I did was reply to a troll being a troll. Wasn't really trying to rant, it just came out as that. I don't flood the forums with anything, generally my posts are on topic and direct. In fact, this is the first time I've ever ranted about anything. What exactly should I be searching for? Sherwood trolling more threads so I can just follow him around and comment? That's the definition of trolling. I've derailed this topic enough, and I sincerely apologize to the OP.

The best thing about the iphone possibly coming to vzw, is that it will rid us of the likes of sherwood1.

Yes, the little kiddies need the iLemming.

Guys The iphone will always lack in hardware sooner or later to Android.... a new android phone gets announced every day. But since the iphone was released no new phone has beat it in total hardware performance. And as far as doing anything better than android.....well it just offers more. what good is a OS when there are no applications on it.
Iphone wins in that area.
PS i was the guy that got banned for a few weeks cause i was handing out the Verizon leaked update to everyone...while mods were keeping it to themselves!! I didnt get it from them but they tend to keep things for themselves.
So your welcome, those who talk crap bout me, please show me one thing you offered....
BTW VOODOO the biggest joke in history and people still falling for it.

There was no reason for you to be such a douche. I work in customer service and we can't stand people like you. You think we know everything and that we just like to keep information from you to piss you off. We tell you what we know, and we often don't know much since we're JUST customer service reps. We're not the software developers, we're not corporate, and we often learn about things just before you do as the consumer.
You're not even being a **** head to the right person. You should find the contact information for Samsung Corporate and get a hold of them somehow. They're the decision makers and they're the people who decide when **** comes out, not customer service. I can speak from experience, if you're professional and conduct yourself in a polite manner you'll get results. Once you start being a complete ignorant asshole, we do the bare minimum for you.
I hope you're happy that you made an innocent person's day more difficult because you wanted your stupid software update.

What is with all the FROYO or ELSE crap? Chill!

RELAX. I've seen so many 'i've had it, i want to swim in Froyo goodness' that i want to puke.
Let me start by saying that i've been in this community for a Looong time and even ran my own kitchen website at one time. I have had over a dozen smartphones and love upgrades.
With that all out there, I can honestly say that my fascinate is perhaps the only phone i've owned (I have an intercept too) that i don't tweak much. I currently run DJ05 and with the blackish storm theme along with some hacks to allow me to save off to my SD card and GPS fixes.
I install a new ROM (crap kernal, slapkernal, rampage) and themes on the intercept. I did the same for winmo 5 and 6. But the Fascinate, it rocks! Have others here had the pleasure of playing with the famed Galaxy Epic? Our 3G is nearly as fast as their 4G and they $10 a month for that battery draining beast. Verizon is Waaay better than Sprint, ATT and Tmobile put together. Reception is the bomb. The EPic/Vibrant/Captivate soft buttons suck. You need to press them 4 or 5 times to get it to take.
Look, I all for upgrading, but Froyo doesn't buy me any sort of happiness at this point. I really don't give a squat whether it comes out or not. I don't even pine for Gingerbread. For what? We don't have a video camera on the front, so the best features are moot for us.
The reality is that Froyo and Gingerbread are just performance tweaks. I have it on my Intercept, woohooo (sarcasm). It will make a ****ty phone into a reasonable phone, but it won't make a great phone any better. Do you have slowdowns on the Fascinate? I'm running Asphalt 5 and Spiderman from the Galaxy Tab on the FAscinate without nearly a hint of lag. Oh of course, we have the same hardware, the best hardware currently out on the market. Until the ATrix/optimus comes to the states.
I love this site, but lately it's gotten full of these frustrated posts about a product little know nothing about.
Here's an analogy, if you're driving a 250mph Mercedes AMG, do you care if Mercedes says it's coming out with a new one with an extra 10hp?

I completely agree. If I may share and I mean absolutely no disrespect whatsoever, but you do realize that you have just contributed to exactly that.
Again I mean no harm but in short just don't reply to them. Just my thoughts.
I wanna take a second and defend all those individuals who keep asking questions about Froyo and updates (me having been one of them).
While I think some of the questions are good and intelligent, a lot have been repetitive and can be answered by searching. If that is the case, why can't the "super-intelligent" forum members just ignore them and don't answer negatively? The threads take on a life of their own when member after member comes in to post links to other places and tell the poster that they are annoying and stupid.

BTW I accidentally thanked you.
Seriously though, can you imagine trying to follow the latest development going on while several new guys who keep spamming with "WHEREZ THE FROYOZ YO." It's not easy. It's frustrating. I know I come across as arrogant and elitist, but this comes from dealing with people asking the same question over and over and over again. It's really not that the members here are trying to be harsh.
Having tried to help several users with their issues when new ROMs/development comes out, it's not easy to have to deal with everyone's issues while having to sort through the FROYO threads.
Also if you read the sticky, the moderator posted... STOP POSTING WHERE IS THE FROYO THREADS...
If you can't even read that... I'm not saying that they deserve a flaming, but it's going to happen. This forum has seen countless froyo threads. Search froyo in the Samsung Fascinate section of this forum and you'll see just how many...

Because this site belongs to the "super-intelligent" ones. And keeping a development site free and clear of non-development type threads will keep the "super-intelligent" happy. But gone are the days when users would join and lurk and self-educate themselves and would be aware of the fact that this is a development site for developers and not a place to parrot the latest engaget article about 2.2 on a completely different device.
I myself first came to xda and lurked for 4 months and then I joined in October of 2008 and I kept lurking and reading and reading and google searching and more reading. The first post I ever made was in April of 2009 and it was answering a question someone had. And that's because I identified the fact that this a development site for developers to create and share their hard work. This is not an end-user hacking site. And this is NOT an OH NO I GOT THIS PHONE YESTERDAY AND I DID A BUNCH A CRAP TO MY $500 DEVICE WITHOUT PROPERLY UNDERSTANDING WHAT I WAS EXACTLY DOING AND NOW IT'S STUCK ON THE SAMSUNG LOGO, HELP ME site.
And that is why the "super-intelligent" might be a little annoyed that their little development site has been overrun by people that show little to no respect and actually think that their opinions and parroted news stories actually matter. Or just blatantly create a help me thread without even spending 5 minutes of searching with google to actually mmmm I don't know, but help themselves.
Mom always told me "you made that mess. So now you are gonna clean up that mess"
good day.
+1 chopper and racer...
longtime Lurker and reader myself and it makes me cringe when I see someone with a ton of posts and says "how do I fix (some random problem) without ADB cuz I don't know how to use it"
The actual name of this site is "XDA Developers" I know how to look up engadget on the web when I want to know the latest rumors or news. =)

I agree wholeheartedly, I lurk this forum and occasionally lurk IRC mainly because I'm interested. I have nothing useful to add 99.5% of the time and therefore don't try. Posting this reply is, ironically enough, useless in and of itself and I shall punish myself later for switching from lurker to troll this night.
That said, MY reason for lurking about on all things Froyo/Gingerbread for my phone is that I'm very interested in AOSP-based ROMs for it, and 2.2/2.3 are the OS revisions on which the devs are actively pursuing this accomplishment. While I am a software developer by trade (and I'd like to think a damn good one), I have NOTHING I can contribute to these efforts. I hate Java, I don't know enough about hacking hardware to make functional drivers without proper documentation, hell, I've never even *installed* Eclipse. Basically I am as useless as anyone else off the street would be out here. The difference seems to be that I KNOW THAT. I can't do these things, I don't want to take the time to learn how to do these things, and as a result I have no right to ***** and moan that these things haven't been done (yet). Instead, I sit in awe as others do these things I cannot and wait patiently for the day when I can benefit from someone else's hard work for a change ... and I'm happy to do so. I actually enjoy watching other, most likely younger, developers go through the process of creating something really cool armed with nothing but their own wit and persistence. The end result of their efforts will be something I not only desire for my own use, but will be something I could use to jump-start my own entry into this world should I change my mind and want to actively pursue such a thing.
My phone works great already, thanks to the people here. It runs Android 2.1. It does every single thing I've wanted it to do thus far, with these people's help. Yes, it has some annoyances that in my case would be resolved by having access to a truly stock AOSP-based system, and of course Froyo/Gingerbread is what I'd prefer over Eclair, but I can wait. I will wait. I will continue to donate an admittedly trivial amount of my hard earned money to the developers actively pursuing the end result I'm looking for that I'm not willing to work towards on my own.
I went from Troll to full-on Preacher here ... I can live with that I just hope that the devs here can see that there are people out there that both appreciate and admire them for what they do and hope they can turn a blind eye to the entitled jerks that continue to want something for nothing every day.
End: post-turned-uncalled-for-rant.

Trust me, i hated opening this thread for that same reason. But this is not a "Trash Samsung, I need Froyo" thread. It's the opposite. It's a "I love Samsung for building a badass phone and don't need Froyo" thread.
Here's a response i read from the tmobile forum about their newly coveted Froyo.
" if you want the new froyo, don't bother
i just downloaded it, and found out i wasted an hour on it.
firstly, its laggy... more than eclair.
secondly, it has some things that verify update.zip so you have to use methods that you usally wouldn't use, and flashing another rom is hard because CWM doesn't work."
-GPS got worse for me
-I get the boot up sound even with System Volume all the way down. I don't get any sound for shut down though. Also get a vibrate after 'Goodbye' screen goes away (I don't know if that is a pro or con).
-I can't do a quick reboot anymore.
-The colors seem a little duller to me.
-Avatar doesn't play.
-Stock keyboard doesn't work
-Apps in Market are not stored
Pay attention, it's likely we are getting those same issues, just adpated to our flash camera.

Why post something like that when it's clear that this guy had a fluke update experience? And to say we will have the same issues is sort of ridiculous. Sorry. I never had one problem updating to 2.2 on my og droid as well as my incredible. Obviously there will be a very small portion of people that have a problem with it as this guy did.
I understand the point of this thread is to stop all of the "Where is froyo?" threads, but to start saying we don't want or need 2.2 is sort of silly. Am I happy with 2.1 and how it runs on this phone? You bet. Do I think 2.2 will only improve this phone and take advantage of its potential even more? For sure. It'll come when it comes, but let's not downtalk it in the meantime.
e: Also, to the OP, why don't the little performance tweaks matter? What about the fact that 2.2 should help improve battery life which, in my opinion, this phone definitely needs? And the 250mph and 10hp analogy is really far off from what this is. It's more like a mercedes getting an engine tuneup as well as a variety of other small upgrades to enhance the overall experience of the car. Even if it's not revolutionary as some people believe (and no, I know it's not as I've gone through the update to 2.2 on a couple devices now), why not be excited if it enhances the experience overall?
Like I said before, I agree people should chill with all of the posts/topics about froyo along with all of their nagging. However, there's no reason to talk down about 2.2, either.

Thanks for people like you. I posted something in development about froyo. To me out was a legit development question. Since I did not word it correctly I been flamed for days even after I apologized. I mean its almost like being bait in a fish tank. What kind of taste in the mouth does this give someone new like me. The people that flamed do not know what my potential might be for contributions to this site. I know the moderators are mad that people are sometimes posting in the wrong forum, but that is always going to happen. Not one "real" developer flamed me nor did any moderator. The people that think they are comedians are the real problem in forums like this, not the people with real questions our concerns. Sorry for venting, but some people need to grow up

Samsung/XDA part2

I haven't forgot about you guys. Today we had a meeting with XDA owners via telephone. Were just getting everything ready before we make a huge announcement. I told you guys I'm NOT going to let you guys down. Just be a little patient.
Thanks

Nice to hear from you John. Looking forward to hearing the news.
Interesting to hear.. But I wish it wasn't so "hush hush", because otherwise it starts to feel less of an equal community.
i guess i missed the part1.
what is this all about ?
I guess that instead of making another threads/parts it would be good to pin this thread down.
I, honestly, am very happy and interested in seeing how this cooperation will progress in time (and of course I'm not the only one here).
It's very encouraging to see company such as Samsung to start a cooperation (at whatever level) it gives kind of "legitimacy" to what people do here (although legitimacy might be too strong word, but still).
Either way I'm thrilled to see what the feature brings.
Regards,
Pawel
Hi there, John!
I personally am happy to see this sort of reach from a big company toward the ”little people” who often do more that a giant.
I also am wary regarding any possible positive outcome, considering you still have to overcome a strict and rigid hierarchy, while independent devs here are free to move as they please.
But it's nonetheless a great thing if Samsung really wants to be ”more open”.
Only one question: why, of all Sammy subsidiaries, has Seoul chosen Dallas (or any other US city for that matter), given that the most powerful and fruitful development effort was and still is directed towards Europe (SGS's biggest market to date)?
Cheers and all the best,
V.
Does the XDA-site administration actually produce anything on its own? Most (all?) of the people doing the actual hacking are members of the forum rather than working for it. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with... Coding/Hacking challenges? Can't really see much else that would actually need a collaboration with XDA instead of with the coders/hackers directly.
we're doing something but we won't tell you what!
but it's exciting i promise you!! we've discussed it with VIPs (which you are not part of, noob xda forum user!) and you may or may not see something about it later and it may or may not be exciting at all in the end (such as: oh look we opened a sgs 2 section !11)

Last time someone told similar things I had to pay more tax, the kindergarten was more expensive and the atomic power plant contracts were extended instead of using cheap and tiny water power from Norway.

Straight talk - that's it.
If it is confidential keep it confidential until a result is ready to be announced officially.

hopefully good news to come!
i'll keep this topic open as long as XDA members behave themselves in a polite manner
lets try to be constructive, and make the best of this endeavor with Samsung.
It's not an every day chance that you see Big corporations willing to listen.

There are only two now open, because of all the bashing - I'm cautiously hopeful that this is going to be a great thing, Samsung actually listening.....
I'm sure the bashing and mob mentality being displayed here will endear the manufacturer to this community and force it to listen to us. People use some common sense and stop advertising just how uneducated and uncultured you are. Here we potentially have a manufacturer reaching out and testing the water, hoping to gather information from it's user community to better it's device and service to us but you idiots seem hell bent on driving them off. MORONS!
Thank you so much Samsung for this recognition of our community, it means a lot and we all are thankful. Can't wait to see what comes of this.
Please keep us informed

I'd like to think 2.3, with input and improvements from the 'XDA elite' (I'll name no names ).
But I won't be upset if this is not the case, nothing bad can come of this joint venture...
(and I know I shouldn't, but I had to laugh )
If ever something does come out of this, I think xda should have a "developers only" sub-section where devs can collaborate with manufacturers. Regular users can still read, but only devs can post. We shall leave it to the owners to decide who is a "dev" and who isn't. That should help keep the riff-raff out. I'm tired of seeing threads in the dev section filled with the same stupid questions over and over again.

[Q] "Huge Announcement"?

OK, preface: I don't want your sarcasm or cheeky remarks. I'm sick of reading through irrelevant and closed threads to no avail.
If it were agreeable, would a MOD, or SamsungJohn please comment as to whether the "huge announcement" has been made?
I'm not trying to be negative or anything, but I have my own personal thoughts as to whether "opening the lines of communication" is considered "huge", or even an "announcement". If the powers that be allow, I would like to comment to SamsungJohn about that personally.

EB13 Imminent?
So is this the "huge announcement"?
http://www.androidcentral.com/froyo-eb01-release-imminent-sprint-epic-4g
Android central suggests that the EB13 update is "imminent" and that sprint has been making changes to its customer service page in advance of this.
EDIT: Actually I think they are suggesting that Samsung is updating its Epic 4g page. Hopwever, when I follow AC's link it just goes to a blank page with a little form at the bottom asking if I was satisfied with the content. I said "no".

This announcement of EB13 is good for us Epic owners, but that does not effect all Galaxy S owners. I think the better news is that John is here to make sure we don't have another debacle like this whole Froyo update. Samsung realizes the influence we have and to have a line of communication between a Manufacturer and a dev forum is unprecedented.
IF the poll he is compiling is the 'big news', then if it actually bears fruit, that could be useful. Not sure that is the announcement. I think he shot himself in the foot promising an announcement, maybe official collaboration between him and svetius is a big deal to him, but until it bears fruit, it's not that impressive to the average XDA user. This leads me to believe that the poll may not be the announcement, just another part of the work he is trying to accomplish here. Give him a shot, and dont ***** about froyo, he said its on the list, wait and see what he does.
Silly flaming about froyo on here is only going to get threads closed, and give him an excuse to ignore the issue. If you must, do it on the social network sites, or PM him, then you can get your temp ban, and threads stay open...
As speculated in one of the general threads, (ran out of thanks if I didnt catch it), he MAY be sent here as a distraction, to keep us off twitter, FB, and the other retarded social networking forums. He is from that dept, maybe he is cleaning it up by distracting us...? Kind of an elaborate conspiricy, but who knows. Those that have been doing the twitter/FB campaigns, dont let up, it may be working... but keep the crazy comments there, as it will draw more attention to the unrooted masses...
HOPING SJohn is making such a big deal because he knows something he cant say yet... just hope he doesnt drag it out and announce froyo on the 20th!
This still reminds me of the Fallout3/Vegas on the PS3 BS...
Working nights sucks! I go to bed and all the fun comes and all I find are locked threads after a cup of coffee when I wake up. :/
So how many armchair bandits have actually sent a pm to the xda owner on what we might do as requested? I did suggest a moderated forum where posts are only posted until after being reviewed by a mod. While I'm no dev I did offer to help out with such an endeavour.
Why don't you guys just give him a chance. His hands are tired right now and be can't say anything untill xda allows him.

The first part of your post was spot-on....the above though is way too tinfoil hat and outside the realm of the feasible or credible. There's no way anyone in a position like his is going to come here or elsewhere to simply serve 'as a distraction'. Frustrations especially amongst we Epic owners are understandable to a point, but the above manner of thinking goes beyond frustration and crosses the line into bizzare paranoia.
It seems fairly obvious and certainly logical what's happened with John to this point, and in hindsight predictable too given the angst here; he came primarily with the hopeful purpose to collaborate with the people actually doing ROM/device development here, to try and establish a relationship with these folks perhaps to mutual benefit for both current and future product/customers. Unfortunately, the initial implementation came a bit too soon and without enough forethought and, it seems, without communicating his intentions and initiating a dialogue with the XDA owners first. That, combined with (a.) some obvious communication 'ambiguity' (at best) on John's part and (b.) making the mistake of thinking such a dialogue should be brought forth and attempted with the open masses of the entire membership of XDA down to the end user level and all the kneejerk 'angry white noise' therein, proved to be a disaster.
None of that means the desire and effort behind what John/Samsung is attempting is without value or merit though. And fortunately, it now sounds like they're going to try isolating his interaction purely with the dev/material contributers that actually matter, and hopefully they'll do so privately as well to keep everything filtered from the mob mentality so that an actual civil, mature interactive process can take place. Besides, a great deal of what he was barraged with in the central 'General' thread were issues that are mired on the carrier level anyway at least when it comes to the remaining GS phones still lacking Froyo.
And honestly, any information the end users want to hear, if he can even provide such, would be better received and trusted if its handed down through already established devs & moderators in each forum who have the history and respect of the membership at large to some degree. Otherwise you get what you've gotten the last 24 hours; a mindless, angry lynch mob mentality of kneejerk frustration being directed at one sole employee who (a.) had nothing personally to do with the cause of said frustration, and (b.) furthermore actually dares to come in good faith & intention wishing to bridge the divide. Sometimes, the hounds become so rabid and lose their minds so much that they try to gnaw off the good intentioned hand that attempts to try and help or feed them, and that's pretty much what happened in John's case.
Although it would be cool, I highly doubt that XDA is doing and hands-tying here. The ball has bee Sammy's court for a while now.
XDA has been walking the walk, not talking the talk.
If the 'huge announcement' was to announce the efforts of "collaboration", fine, we can move forward.
If a MOD came and commented YAY or NAY, then they could close this thread, and it's purpose would be served.
As it stands now, you have a bunch of people making assumptions one way or the other and making silly statements accordingly. We all what assuming does... =D
how do you know about my tinfoil hat?! No, really, its all Noobnl and Elvis' fault. Bastards.
I honestly hope John does something more than get special threads and draw attention to XDA. But you had a good idea there....
Any Mod/Admin have any input????
Was the announcement the first post of the 2 or 3 threads SJ started, or were they to lead up to the announcement, and were hijacked by angry SGS users with pitchforks acting like John is Frankenstein's monster??
BTW, did anyone notice the GSM SGS users were much more rabid in the General forums???? I guess its because of their rates/service ratio Seriously though, I thought we were bad...
it is getting all hyped up and will probably turn out to be meh...

Hehe, you can't say "huge announcement" to a bunch of nerds and not have it be something that gives them their techie-jimmies for the day.
When I think of "huge announcement", I think something really relevant to the target crowd that either appeases are very much wanted need, or announcing something crazy that gets everyone excited.
If either of these things fails to happen, I consider this a major PR gaffe, that could be saved be some out of the ordinary effort by Sammy.

We are our own worst enemy

It's really so disappointing to see the reception given to SamsungJohn here in XDA. I know many of you are angry about the Froyo delays, but *****ing out the social media liasson won't accomplish anything.
This is the first time ever, AFAIK, that a handset manufacturer has reached out directly to the XDA community. Maybe it's all smoke and mirrors, who knows, but we won't see anything if we just reject their attempts out of hand.
And I think people need to stop with the notion that Samsung is evil or just wants to hurt users. They're a huge company; it may not have even been on the radar of the decisionmakers that we were dissatisfied.
We're in a fairly recent and novel paradigm where users expect timely software updates--a year and a half ago nobody expected that. You bought a phone and maybe there might be a firmware update somewhere down the road. And out of the millions of people who bought SGS phones, we're just a very small minority. If we want cooperation from Samsung we need to impress upon them the advantages of collaborating with devs, because honestly they're going to make billions either way. If we demonstrate that cooperation will involve crass tantrums, they'll just sell their phones to the millions of people who don't give a crap about independent development. Do we really want that kind of belligerent attitude a la Motorola? I don't know about you, but I'd rather we try to move Samsung towards us rather than away from us.

Agreed...well said...both of you.
I agree that was pretty messed up. It's bad enough all the devs have been scrared away. Ex-da isn't what it used to.
I totally agree. The guy is not a decision maker at Samsung - he came here to try to get feedback about how the company can improve and people just flamed the guy relentlessly. Further proof that there are too many children and buffoons here. It's no wonder that devs loathe coming here. FYI to the guys that tore into SamsungJohn - Krylon had a good conversation with Sammy and they are looking to get in contact with Sombionix as well.
What's not on their radar with a 90% surety is timely software updates. Hardware companies are going to drag their feet as much as possible to provide software upgrades for old hardware, if they do it at all.
I don't meam any disrespect to anyone but I gotta disagree.
Samsung is a huge company but they have also been in the mobile business for quite a while and they have also been known to release products that don't quite work the way they are supposed to, just like the Vibrant and until now there was no post purchase support or at least no usable support or updates... Look at the history of the Beholds and almost any other phone they released.
Releasing a phone like the Vibrant in 2010 that lags out of the box and where the gps issues make the navigation function unusable is just not right. Stock this phone is a joke and after a few days of use it is really frustrating. They are supposed to do a lot more then just release a device after device and look at the sale numbers.
These are very expensive devices and for that kind of money they are supposed to work!
Agree or disagree with me but facts are facts. Not everyone who owns such a device will root or flash their device with a custom rom in order to make it usable. I have played with many other android phones and they all work smoother and stock a lot better than any of the galaxy s series so far...
To list some...
Htc incredible, nexus one, mytouch 4g, tmobile g2, droid x, even htc aria which is not even in the same class as above mentioned models.
If the developers on the xda forums can make this phone perform ten times better than stock, explain to me why Samsung's developers cannot do the same...
I speak for myself, but I am fed up with samsung and their quality control and I can say this was the last Samsung phone I purchased until they do something revolutionary and change my mind...
Isn't someone testing these devices for a week or two before they release them in order to make sure everything works as it should?! If they are then maybe samsung should hire someone from this forum instead...
Also why don't the phone manufacturers just make a survey on the forums for feedback from users as to what the phone should include as far as software or hardware... 2010 top tier android device without a flash for the camera is just wrong and the night mode cannot replace the flash. I do not use the camera as much but just for the sake of it they should have led flash, some people use it and want it, how expensive can it be to do that...
The Super AMOLED display is the best in my opinion for now, but it is not enough to justify the many other mistakes or flaws... The displays on other phone aren't crap either!
Sorry for the long post.

I'm totally sympathetic to the people who are fed up and say #neveragain. But the solution to that is to complain through other channels and then never buy Samsung again.
This rep came here reaching his hand out to the dev community, and insulting him or whining does a serious disservice to everyone else here. I think he came here to try to create a mutually beneficial relationship, not take complaint tickets. Many of us are skeptical, but we think it's worth seeing if anything can come of this (and if you aren't, the actual devs are).

I was one of those that got beholded they flat out lied on that one. Here I am again with the vibrant guessing thats samsung mo to screw ya
This rep was hosed due to his own lack of knowledge, nothing else.
He started off by filling the cool-aid cups and passing them around expecting everyone to drink freely.
"Hi, I'm SamsungJohn and I have some REALLY BIG things for everyone here"
*I'll wisely not mention that I can't answer questions about hardware or software and in fact I can't really answer a single question anyone has*
It was Samsung corporate in damage control mode,NOTHING ELSE.

I honestly do feel sorry for John getting thrown to the sharks by his employer, but I know for a damn fact it could have been handled with tact and finesse.
Oh yea, before the flaming closet dwellers start in....
i.e.
" Hi, I'm John, I work for Samsung, and they have given me the job position of liason with the public.
Now before I go any further, please understand that I am under corporate restraints and NDAs (non-disclosure agreements) so that I can only give so much info and so much data. I do not know yet if they will allow me to give access to unreleased software.
So, within those restraints I will do my best to provide what I can.
Yes, I know a great many of you are upset with Samsung and that is why I am here.
Please go easy on me as I do not own or control the company"
Now, would that really have been so very tough of an introduction ?

It's one thing to remain skeptical towards the guy and his motives but its completely another to flat out accuse him of lying and subterfuge merely because he may have omitted the exact words you need to hear or he wasn't nice enough, etc. It seems fairly obvious to me that if ANY large company was to hold a Q&A session on specifics of perceived missteps, they would choose a much more public forum - not a niche community of developers. On the other hand, if they wanted to incorporate new features or contract out some good developers, they are in the right place.
I don't doubt they (samsung) aren't doing this out of the goodness of their collective hearts, but if this is how changes are effected, I'll take it.
Totally agree with you Kubernetes, people think they'll get something done by impressing their rage upon the messenger. So far all of his threads are closed due to people completely ignoring the instructions and asking for release dates and trolling samsung saying they're gonna tell all their friends to never buy samsung, it's really disgusting if you ask me. I dunno about you guys but I'm the only person I know who cares if samsung releases timely updates...everyone else I know is NOT a power user and could not care less about updates. I think if outsiders say, higher ups in Samsung, were to read those threads they'd see more hostility and uncooperativeness
than a community that's ready to work with them.
Main reason I dislike all the people flaming him is because as soon as I try to ask a legit question, the thread is already locked. Trolls are blaring out people who want to handle this like adults.
Please don't try to put words in my mouth unless you intend to become my wife. I'm a dominating top so consider the job well before volunteering.
At no point did I say that John was lying, yet you say very directly that I did.
Exactly whom is the lier ?
Well honestly the way he was treated was bad, but again that is the way Samsung has treated us from the beginning, but I do have to say something about this section (vibrant) As a whole we fight with each other too much. Just take a look at the 2.2.1 rom release in the development section. It just one big ***** fest, and it is stupid. We need to focus on fixing and making our phones better not our EGO's. If we as a community can't get our collective a$$ together we will just fade away and kill our developer support. There is too much drama. One group doesn't want to work with another so on so forth. If we pooled our collective resources then we could be great.

It Is damage control, but that said, they are (cause they recognize not to do so is suicide) reaching out, but the teaser is just a tactic to buy more time.
I am in the corporate world and I am Senior Exec, So this is just normal proceedings from a business to engage - delay and then reveal what they really are going to offer. That tactic is done cause it lowers expectations so if it is not enough you do not end up with a mass rebellion on your hands. Samsung John is a Big Boy, he knows the rules and expects to hear both happy and hostile comments and takes them like a grain of salt. So there is nothing for us to be ashamed of, he asked for our opinion and comments and we gave them to him.... the good, the bad and the ugly
One other note SamsungJohn released the exact same email in every Galaxy forum, so do not be wooed into thinking he was talking directly to us. It was can statement and a canned response/followup.
This might be his big announcement
I have been a user here four about 2 months and have never posted because I know how to search and I don't want to deal with the egos and the flaming, but this was posted on another forum (has nothing to do with phones) that I use.
"I talked with someone in STA (the division of the company that focuses on mobile devices), no plans at least in the immediate future are int he works for OTA updates on the Galaxy S 3G lineup. Which has me pissed. (edit: by "immediate future" I mean we're looking at like March for the mandatory OTA update, which leads me to think this hardwire update is just a beta)
Even as an employee, I can guarantee this is going to be my last Samsung phone. I STILL don't have Froyo because of all the hoops I had to go through in addition to running errands today.
Why you're forced to use a completely different connection mode, when virtually every other phone on the market can update either OTA or with a standard USB mount point, then Kies refused to connect until I turned on USB debugging, turned off USB debugging, and restarted Kies.
Now? With 88% battery life, I need to let it charge to 100% just to even start downloading the update."
Idid not include a link since it is private forum and the guy has a job he would probably like to keep. This was posted last month when the Kies update came out.
With that said it would still be nice to work with samsung, what may come from it might not be the holy grail, but at least something may come from it.
I find alarming that a lot of people in these threads think of Samsung as some sort of benefactor. An overlord that we must strive to please or else face the consequences. That is the exact opposite of what it should be.
We don't need to please them with diplomacy as if we owe them something. They simply have to treat us like clients and thats the end of that.
I can't believe some of you feel that we must appease a paid employee and thank him for doing what he is being paid to do. What is he gonna do, quit his job because the whole XDA collective is not getting on its knees for him.
An advice to Samsung, and SamsungJohn: stop talking, and start acting. A good start would have been a post saying: "Hi, I'm a representative from Samsung. Here's a source code and some other tools you guys might find useful FOR IMPROVING OUR PRODUCT. THANK YOU!"

An advice to Samsung, and SamsungJohn: stop talking, and start acting. A good start would have been a post saying: "Hi, I'm a representative from Samsung. Here's a source code and some other tools you guys might find useful FOR IMPROVING OUR PRODUCT. THANK YOU!"

Jesus that's myopic. Samsung doesn't need anything from us, we're just a tiny minority of people who have bought their phones. They clearly think there's something to be gained from forming relationships with devs, which is why SamsungJohn is here and not Android Central or a more consumer oriented site.
You want source? Great, I'm sure that's what Krylon and Supercurio are telling them. Like adults. And I'm sure they're also explaining how timely source release can benefit Samsung as well, instead of demanding it or crying about how we're owed better support.
Because in the end, he doesn't have to be here and Samsung doesn't have to do jack about helping XDA because they'll still sell a ****-ton of phones regardless. If you can't understand that there are things we want from Samsung and it's not "appeasement" to try to get them, I have no words for you. It's not like we're holding all the cards and some horrible fate will befall Samsung if they decide this is too much of a headache.

[Q] What's everyone's final decision???

This hole controversy over the past few days over P3droids post
http://www.mydroidworld.com/forums/...rooting-manufacturers-carriers.html#post65013
When i first read this i was stunned, i unloaded a lot of frustration out in another thread but that didn't do anything other than make me feel better, temporarily. I have another year with the Droid X and don't want to just put up with it until i can upgrade. I've enjoyed my Droid X very much and would like it to continue that way but the development on it seems to be dieing. I still see there being much more to do to the device, considering Gingerbread leak was just released and rooted. I don't know how many people flashed the leak but i have... and it makes a huge difference in performance. I am no dev or anything, the most knowledge i have on this concept is rooting, flashing roms, and sbf'ing when something goes wrong. So i just want an idea of what everyone else is doing now that P3droid has said what he had to say. Do you believe it?
This is my question ...why would someone who had this info release a "leak" of the rom they can track down? And still have links up for d/l?
If that was me id advice people not to upgrade to GB and wait for an official release then figure out how to root it... just how they figured out how to root the nexus s g2 mt4g atrix thunderbolt ...its possible ..
Now this is all a "he said she said"thing case ... no evidence no links no emails from Verizon or Motorola ...I understand the tethering and data thing but the root is garbage in my opinion ...it clearly voids warranty so you really think Motorola would be upset if you voided your warranty and have to buy a new phone? Less likely ...just my two cents
And just read where its posted in..
"News and Rumors" .....
That's all I gotta say

I agree with 100% jeezy. I understand why Verizon would be upset about the tethering, but we all do pay for UNLIMITED data. Verizon is just upset that we found a loophole instead of paying for their wireless tethering. And it is a little fishy that P3droid will be the one person to give us a leak and then immdiately tell us this information. I did take a peak at his twitter the night that he posted that information and aparently he was drunk...hmm.... No disrepect to P3Droid, he may be telling the truth about all of this but we can't tust anyone anymore, especially after the recent rumor that someone cracked the bootloader.
And there is 70 views on this thread already and only 2 votes. Please people, we want everyones input on this topic. Obviously other people are curious too if there are already 70 views lol. If you want to comment and give your opinion, thats great too, but all i ask is if you make those 2 clicks to vote.
The final decision is to stop spamming and trolling about that topic. There is no solid evidence, links, Official ANYTHING for that matter and quite frankly, and I speak for a lot of senior members and those with common sense, I think we all want to stop hearing about it.
There are four posts in this thread, three of them are yours (OP). No one is posting because this is old and dead news on XDA. I doubt this thread will even get to a page two.
Well now someone has their panties in a bunch. The idea for this thread was the poll. Your exactly right in that there is no solid evidence on the topic... Which is the point of the poll. If there were solid evidence, then the topic would be dead. So instead of trashing a thread with your useless information, go make another thread on switching the 3g icon to 4g. Talk about pointless Ben

Umm.. Does anyone with a real brain cell believe it? Seriously stop spamming with this useless garbage. This isn't true. Not one shred of any evidence, stop spamming.

No this is a waste of space. The poll is meaningless as it is not true. Seriously how in the world can you believe this? If someone honestly truely believes this and not just from a fear campaign I pity them. Verizon and Motorola are coming off saying they don't care if your Zoom is rooted they will upgrade it anyways. Also every Verizon rep I have talked to have no clue what I was talking about and the most recent one went a step farther and claimed it would probably have been a breach of contract on their end.

Then give an option to say this is bull**** I bet that hit counter will light up like christmas lol...
Bring it on Big Red. Ill have the legal team from Cydia make you their B%$# just like Apple
If it is true it's bullsh#t. If it's a rumor, that's sh#tty too. I hope it's not real, or at least something that never actually happens to us. I don't like the idea of being forced to go back to stock. And why? What was the main reason I got out of all the reading I did? Wireless tether. I don't even use it.
I own my hardware not Verizon.
I haven't changed the code for the baseband which is what interacts with their system.
My user experience is just that, mine.
Isn't a forum an open place for discussion? If you're not interested in the discussion why even read the thread or waste your time commenting on it?
Whatever, regardless if the rumor is true or not I for one am not changing my ways. I will do whatever I want with my phone until Verizon gives me the boot, at which time I will just flash to cricket and enjoy the reduction in my bill.

Sorry for the wall of text. I started typing and next thing I knew I wrote a novel.
Honestly, until I see some news on it, it's just a rumor. I did not upgrade to GB because I would rather wait for some development, but the bottom line is that this is just a rumor.
People have beat the whys, ifs, and hows into the ground so there is no reason for me to talk about them.
If you're so concerned that you have to make multiple threads, polls, and cry to your mother, SBF back to stock and enjoy your stock ROM as best you can. If you were on GB and this is true, VZW already has your MEID so you're ****ed one way or the other. So the only thing I can say is just chill out, crack open a beer, go to work, watch some baseball, jerk off... whatever you do in your spare time that relaxes you. If this whole thing is going to happen it's going to happen and worrying about it won't solve anything. You're already screwed on your current phone if everything P3 said goes down.
Most people here know there are certain risks involved when they mod there phones so if this all goes down, I'll just buy a new one and deal with the wenching from my wife. **** happens; deal with it.
--------------------------------------------------------
Finally, just some food for thought:
I've been using custom ROMs since the days of WinMo 6.5. Unfortunately, my first phone was not hacked due to lack of interest. I think it was the Samsung SCH-i760. While it was not hacked, people were sending this $600 phone bricked under a warranty replacement. I'm sure not as many as the Droid X's being sent back from complete noobies coming here and bricking their phones, but I digress.
Warranty replacements due to tampering are nothing new; it's been going on for YEARS, even prior to Smart Phones. In fact, I remember people warranty replacing their RAZRs trying to get rid of the Verizon UI.
Whatever happens, happens. Just go with it.
Honestly if everything is true and we will be no longer be able to make our droid Phones OUR droid phones I'm just going to get a plan with a cheap carrier and use this as a multimedia device and leo it mine.

You are very correct. You can do whatever you want with your device and Verizon cannot do anything to your device about it. HOWEVER, they can do whatever they want with THEIR service. As stated in the terms of service that EVERYONE here agreed to, in section 2 part d of reasons they can terminate or suspend your service, if you " modify your device from its manufacturer's specifications" they have the right to stop providing you service.
So yes you can modify your device to hell and back but they DO NOT have to give you service for it. So all of you can stop saying Verizon had to tell you something or can't do this. THEY ALREADY TOLD US.
