Actually You don't really need a case. I brought mine an my wife her's around the globe without damage scratches or creaking.
If You need a really slim case get original Sammy case. Although with partly bad critics it's the most unobtrusive case and works perfect in the limits of it's slimness.
Or get a Scott eVest like me, it's got a pocket for tablets : like a magician You pull it out ready to Note ............

I don't miss my Asus dock much at all. The note is pretty incredible. Really HDMI there is an adapter for that. If you can afford about $80 for it on Amazon the AllShare Cast dongle is amazing and can make for some slick presentations.
Bestapp depends on what you wantto do. But unique to the note LectureNotes is perfect for handwritten notes. Lots of postings on the forum about notes and sketching apps.

Screen comparison

How does the screen compare to the Samsung galaxy tab 10.1.? I know people say that the Galaxy tab screen is over saturated but that is a good thing to me because the colors pop more, and I seen a comparison video of the 2 and the galaxy tabs screen is much brighter not that it matters because I usually turn down the brightness, i just want to know if it's a really close call or does the Samsung blow it away?

All I'm gonna say is, between the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Transformer, you shouldn't base your decision of buying which on the screen. Both have their good points and bad points.

Well, the Transformer has a MicroSD slot while GTab 10.1 don't. The GTab 10.1 is lighter, thinner.

I think the Sammy has a better screen overall. It is brighter and has deeper colors. But not by a lot. In my use of the Sammy 10.1 in stores, it did seem more responsive overall, and in comparison it seems I have to touch a bit harder to get the TF to register inputs. But I do agree the displays are close enough it really isn't the thing one should hinge their decision on.

That may be true...I've had my TF for a few days now and beyond the cool YouTube app, don't see much more I can't already do on my Samsung Infuse...I like the experience but I could spend the $400 on something more practical right now...itvis a fine unit but considering taking it back...

I think it comes down to a few things. The extra $100 you "save" with the TF, the microsd expansion, and the dock. If none of these matter to you, then you may want to get the Tab 10.1.
I use the TF as my main computer, so I could not live without the expansion space and most importantly the dock. Typing messages like this are such a breeze.

No! the transformer blows it away
The Samsung screen is sickly, samsung saw the negative reviews of the xoom about how flat the colors were and went to far the other way! It's gross!
The overall spec of the Tab is another joke, they read about ipad thin and decided to go thin, in fact it's so thin there's no room for anything, micro sd, hdmi.
What's the point in that

Actually, that's not at all true. While the number of Honeycomb-optimized apps are still around 300, most Android apps run on Honeycomb just find. They might not take great advantage of the larger screen, but they scale just fine in most cases and are fully functional.
I use my TF for 95% of what I used to use a notebook for. That couldn't possibly be true if Web browsing was all Honeycomb is good for at this point.

For one handed use. Weight of an object doesn't always determine if it's heavy, distribution and design. Take the Notion Ink Adam's design as an example.
Better question would be, why do these people find XDA?
Using mine right now... not heavy at all. Its light! . Even for one handed use xD

I spent an entire year reading quite a bit on a Xoom, not that's a HEFFER. To me at least, Nexus 7 feels like a piece of paper compared to the Xoom, really excited to put some books on it and give this screen a test drive.
Kindle Fire is Heavy. N7 feels MUCH lighter.
On it now and it is definitely not heavy

Coming from the Nook Color and Notion Ink Adam, both rather balanced devices.
But you're right, it's been a while since I had another really to compare with. So my Samsung Galaxy Note and S3 aren't good examples.
Didn't think I needed to get into life details, just to get opinions. I get arthritic pain (gout) in my hands occasionally and get tired quickly trying to hold anything for long during a spout.

Heavy tablet
My nexus 7 tablet is very heavy as well.
But knowing the below facts could contribute.
1 its in its box.
2 the box is in a ups truck
3 the ups truck is in a Plane.
4 the Plane loaders packed the truck in Lead filled bubble wrap..
Hurry up already google..
Sorry for the humor guys. I think a 7 inch tablet is going to perfect compared to my acer A500 That i love but nearly as big as my notebook

Well I watched two anime about 24mins long each, holding the tablet with my thumb and middle finger on it's edges and it was bearable..
I guess it was just a surprise after having Samsung Amoled devices that are practically weightless..

Size matter?

Hi all, I'm considering buying a nexus 7. I have a thrive 10.1,but find it bulky to type in portrait mode. I use it to take a lot of notes on students, but also for the Web and reading on the weekend. Anyone give up a 10.1 for a 7 screen? Is it that big of a difference?
Thank you!

I own a Galaxy Tab 10.1.. I had the same issues with it as you did. Yes it's a big difference from the N7 but for me it made ALL the difference. Portrait mode is perfect to use and type on and landscape mode is perfect for web browsing.. 10.1 was just too bulky for me.. I always felt burdened by it like I was carrying around a computer monitor and not a convenient and productive piece of technology.
My Tab 10.1 now sits on the shelf as I wait for pershoot to pump out some new CM10 builds for it and I plan to just use it as a media center interface. Meanwhile me, my Nexus S and N7 are attached at the hip
I had a 10" HP Touchpad with CM9 that I really liked, but after using a friend's Nexus 7 for a little while, I decided to sell the Touchpad while they were still selling on eBay fora decent amount and buy a Nexus 7. I have had the Nexus for a couple weeks now and have found I use it a lot more than I did the Touchpad since it is a lot more convenient. Also, now when I pick up my wife's iPad, it feels HUGE and unwieldy!
I have not missed the larger screen at all.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I like the 7" size, as it seems to be a happy medium. It's easy to hold with one hand and read. Its comfortable in landscape mode and much more comfortable for playing games. It's easy to carry and to toss into my purse or a pack. I don't watch movies much but it's a nice personal size for viewing. My other device is a HP touchpad and it feels large and heavy in comparison.

Sold my Galaxy Tab 10.1 16GB WiFi for the money to buy an 8GB Nexus7, and didn't regret it for an instant. It's actually portable, it's ridiculously fast, and while it has a smaller screen than the GTab10.1, it's the same resolution, which results in a much more crisp picture.
We now have two Nexus7's in the house: an 8GB and a 16GB. We'll be adding a 32GB as soon as they start showing up for purchase.

Nevermind the GTAB 10.1 had a bug in portrait mode that caused it to lag like hell.. Even their ICS update had it. Samsung really screwed the pooch with the tab 10.1.. It seriously under performed considering it was a dual core tegra 2.

Sold mine as soon as the n7 came out. Hadn't made it to ICS yet. I hear they run VERY well on JellyBean though, especially with all that TouchWiz crap stripped away
I was a hardcore 10 clincher, had four tablets in the 10 inch variety and loved my prime and keyboard. But 7 inches is perfect for almost everything I use a tablet for. In fact since the nexus 7 launched, I got mine before preorders shipped but I dunno the date, I haven't used anything that would be better on a 10 inch screen.

I know alot of people that once they got a 7 ince tab, mainly the Nexus 7, they no longer used/wanted to use, their 10 inch, as it was uncomfortable, heavy and just too big to be portable.
7 inch is the way to go, I personally think 8 inch would be perfect, but 7 inch it is.
GET A N7! TRUST ME
Get a 16 for sure, or wait for the 32.. 8 is just too small
I personally enjoy the size, it works for me immensely. And is super portable.
It's not the size of the tab that's important, but the skill with which you wield it.
I like the 7" and find it very easy to transport. But it is important to give your eye's more "visual breaks" and look arround more. I seem to get more eye fatigue with the 7" if I'm not careful.
So to add another overused phrase to this thread.
Be careful how you handle that 7" tab, you could go blind.

Thinking of returning my tf300...

Okay, so a little over a week, and I'm thinking of returning this, and getting a note 10.1.
Sounds is a little quiet. Word processing isn't that great, considering it's got is own keyboard dock. There is some keyboard lag.
I love the quick charging, touchpad though.
Biggest problem is the flex. This tablet creaks and flexes. Makes me a little worried about durability. Any thoughts and input would be welcomed.

I personally have a tf300, and I work at Best Buy where I have sold dozens of them (many with docks). Our display model goes through ALOT of abuse with our customers, kids, and my co-workers who don't know how to use it, or set the device in it. It still works perfectly fine, and has no problems. I can vouch for the durability of the tablet and its dock. I really think this is the one of the best tablets. I am also familiar with the Note. Its expensive, but its another favorite at Best Buy. One of the most advanced tabs we sell. No dock though.
Ended up returning it. Bought a note from Costco for $430.
Hopefully the next generation of transformer has its own " office" suite that works flawless. Also, reading the forums has me thinking that I shouldn't have updated to jellybean out of the box. The note is just much " sturdier" , no flex.

I just don't see $130 worth of difference between it and the Asus though. I've only got $359 invested in my tab AND dock and it's nice. I have no idea what you're talking about dock keyboard lag either. I've used mine a bunch and never once experienced any lag.
When it all boils down to it, all that matters is that you are happy with it though.

Samsung take forever to release updates (it took them over 3 months to get Jelly Bean on the Note 10.1 when the TF300 already had it).
The Note 10.1 also just doesn't feel as premium compared to the TF300.
The only real benefits I can see that the Note 10.1 has are: Audio, Faster Processor and an extra 1GB of RAM.

I try not to root my tablets, only my phones. I lost a couple of documents while typing them. Kind of put me off, but the killer is the weight balance and flex. Never reallly felt comfortable holding it wth one hand. Also, for pure speed, I would have bought an n10. I did enjoy the fast charging and extended battery with the dock, not to mention the touchpad.
The note definitely has a more premium feel in hand, aspecially the balance and glass surface. Resolution ist as good though.

Asus are generally quick with updates in my opinion. The transformer TF300 was one of the first devices (outside of the nexus devices) to receive JB if i'm not mistaken

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.
They are already porting 4.2.1...It's easy because the nexus 7 is the TF300T minus sd card and dock(7 inch screen).

I really do think that Asus has something here. I love the galaxy note as well. If I could basically take the camera and dock from the Asus and merge it with the note, I would have a perfect tablet.
Also a dedicated word processing app that works flawless with no chance of data loss.

- Well, back plastic of our tf300 just a little better than the note 10.1 but users will buy a case anyway so that is not a a bif problem , i think.
- 10.1 runs slowly on stock rom. Same thing happen to our tf300. Stock rom on our tablet is [email protected] ( can't even load webpages normally)
- camera, i believe most users don't usually use their tab to take pics
==> for $100 more , note 10.1 have better processor, 2gb ram, s-pen, better display. I think note 10.1 is better choice if you have money to buy one. Or even buy an ipad 3, which is very good for daily use.
p/s: i bought my tab from craiglist for $230 and for that amount of money, i have nothing to complain about. But if i bought this tab with full price, i will regret for sure.

I disagree on the back. The note 2 has way less flex but isn't as grippy.
Agree on the camera, I rarely use them.
The display on the tf300 kicks the crap on the note resolution wise, but I love using the s pen. It's a wash, cause the screen (gorilla glass) makes me trust the Note more.
As far as cases, almost impossible to buy a tf300 case without going online, I went the lazy route and for it from Best buy for the note.
All of these could have been avoided maybe by buying the 700 but price wise, it just brought me back to the Note. Do miss the usb drive though.

my problems with this tablet.

i have 3 things that i find utterly annoying with this tablet.
1. it seems that while in drawing with sketchbook pro, the button on the s pen gets in the way, idk if i just cant figure out how, but it needs an option to turn off the button.
2. the sounds removing the s pen(at least for me) kinda suck, would like the option to add custom sounds.
3.this is just a toss in one, but when i got my tablet, the right botton corner was up, like it hadnt been put together from the factory, after about 10 min about gentle coaxing it snapped back into place, but come on samsung... 600 for a tablet with out of the box defects?? not a big issue though
I agree. I had the original 10.1 & loved it but I sold it in hopes of getting this new 10.1 or the surface pro. Glad I didn't get the new 10.1. Then some people complain of lag on it. I guess it's all the bloatware Samsung has running on it. Good luck either way.

You should be able to replace the pen sound once root is available. My original Note 10.1 does the lightsaber sound. People at work get a kick out of it. You basically use a root enabled file explorer and replace the sound files. Pretty straight forward.

I went with the new Note 10.1. My wife is getting a 256GB Surface Pro 2. Something tells me she is going to have the better experience.
After the second update a few days ago it's butter smooth now.

She will, until she tries getting apps to do stuff or really customizing her experience. The Surface Pro 2 is a diesel device, but I hate the Windows 8 mobile ecosystem.
Windows...hmm where have I heard this name before?
Im thinking about Note 10.1 2014, but I wanna see if Google will annouce a new 10in tab on 24th, because I rather get that.

I'd highly recommend upgrading your S Pen. I ordered and just received my Wacom Bamboo Stylus Feel. The difference is night and day, the weight, size and feel is much better. The button is almost flush too. I got it just for Sketchbook and really makes a difference.

I've heard there was some offset issue with the Bamboo Stylus Feel, are you not running into that issue? Also which model did you get (color)?

Ask yourself if you will use the s-pen at all. If the answer is no, wait it out or just get the current Nexus 10. If the answer is yes, get this. The screen is GORGEOUS, it runs really well, and feels INCREDIBLE in the hands. I don't care what comes out on the 24th, I will not regret this (and I could 100% return this tab if something does come out).

Also rumor is that there isn't any hardware being released on the 24th event.
An announcement will be good enough, and if stuff does become available to purchase, that is just icing on the cake for me.

I did notice some offset. The offset for me is when I have the pen angled. Depending on how you hold will determine the offset. The s pen does seems more accurate. But the Wacom feels better in hand. I haven't done any detail work with the wacom, just loose sketches. I could see using both. I know there is the Samsung version, maybe that one doesn't offset as much, not sure. I was gonna order one to test out.

There isn't supposed to be any hardware announcement either.

I don't think it's that simple. I like stock Android and all but I worry about stability and quality control issues with nexus 10 tabets. I hope I'm wrong for others sake but I had a bad experience with the last nexus 10. Bad light bleed on two of them and crashing issues. I went into purchasing thinking was was not going to use the Spen that much but man am I glad it's there. It's just nice. Plus I'm really digging all the extras like the dual apps in split screen for example.

Fair point. Even when custom ROMs come out I'm not going to put AOSP on here because I really like the Samsung extras. I'm really amazed at this tab. It's phenomenal all around. We get something like hyperdrive or Revolution HD and it'll be spotless.
Also, I hope people are taking advantage of the Samsung app "Watch On" that came installed.
Uses the ir blaster to change the volume and channels with a cable guide that you can just press what you want to watch and it changes it for you. Also if you have a newer smart TV you can watch what you are watching on TV on your tablet. It's like magic lol. I have my tv, cable box, AV receiver, and blu ray player all set up a land It's makes for an awesome experience

I found this application to be just awful. I ended up using "Smart Remote" as I just could not stand the interface. I don't have cable, just a media center, so giving me all sorts of info on whats on TV is useless. I wish there was a way to turn that stuff off, as I may use it then.
