I've recently update the PC kies program to version 2.5.0.12094.
Not only it didn't solve the problem I had with connecting "Kies via Wi-Fi" (it didn't work with my Kies previous version and doesn't work with this update too), but also it messed up someway with my Windows 7 system file and USB connection.
Before the update, if I inserted a pendrive (nothing to do with connecting a Samsung device, just a normal pendrive) in one of my PC's USB slots it was recognized and was accessible in, say, 10 second.
After the update it took more than 2 minutes to access the pendrive USB.
That's very inconvenient and impractical. Evidently Kies software interferred someway with the OS file system and drivers.
Evidence for this misbehavior (imputable to the Kies update) is that after uninstalling it I could again access my pendrive in a reasonable time.
I hate this kind of software that disrupt and interferes with the OS

Yes. Typically they're available on Kies and via OTA at the same time.
To clarify my OP...
I didn't say that Kies doesn't work with my W7 PC.
I just noticed that it changed my PC system behavior when, afetr closing Kies, I connected another USB device (i.e. a normal pendrive).
Before the update to Kies 2.5 the pendrive was recognized almost immediatly. After the update it took an unacceptable time (1 to 2 minutes) to be recognized and available for use. So I uninstalled it and my USB ports were ok again.
But if I'm the only one to have this problem probably Kies update is ok and I have some particular misconfiguration with my PC's USB ports... or some sort of particular conflict with the USB drives installed by Kies.

Interesting. It installs just fine and scans for Air Server. Haven't had a need for it since it installed. Will keep an eye on it as an update might solve the connection issue. Hopefully it will as it's a handy little app.

I bet it's this. I haven't had a problem with Kies but the similar LG app used to do the same thing to my PC. Trying going in to "tools" in Kies and run "network troubleshooter." It'll re-install the drivers. Might help. Might not. Good luck.

Team,
For those of you having trouble finding drivers here are some links.
64bit:
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Samsung/Samsung-Galaxy-S-USB-Driver-for-Windows-x64.shtml
32bit:

For Linux and Mac the Android SDK drivers should work fine.
I don't know if it is a conflict with my AV or something else, but when I use the x86 drivers linked, my phone will shut off completely when attaching with "PC Internet" option in the USB settings.

Also on a mac you do not need the sdk. You do need to be in debugging mode though.
Also, you could just go to the Captivate webpage on Samsung's site and get the Captivate drivers, not the generic Galaxy S drivers linked in the OP.
thanks was looking for these!
In Windows 7 I'm not having an easy time getting the phone to be recognized. If I click Start > Devices and Printers it shows up as Samsung_Android but even Kies won't recognize the phone so something is wrong. I also can no longer mount my external SD card and have it show up in Windows. I tried to uninstall all the drivers and reinstall but it keeps telling me there are already drivers installed...soo..... *shrugs*

I had this problem on my desktop as well. I was using a front USB port on my computer and when I plugged it into one of the back ports, it worked. I also found the USB cable that came with the phone to work better than a cable I had lying around. Try different ports and if all else fails, try a different cable.
So here's something bizarre. I've been using my PC (Win 7 64bit) for weeks now with my Captivate and no issues. Had originally had woes when I got it, but it started working. Anyway, today I plug it in and ... it doesn't recognize it. Have installed / changed NOTHING -- only M$ patches have been applied. Tried to roll back prior and get the lovely BSOD probably because I have 4 SATA Raptors RAID-0'd and M$ doesn't know how to use that, but has anyone else seen this behavior before?
And to add to this. I rebooted my phone and now it works again. Very odd but problem solved.

ive been trying for weeks and trying all three, generic Galaxy S, AT&T captivate drivers and Kies and can't get anything working in USB Mass storage mode or Kies mode...
This is on Windows 7 64bit. Driving me crazy. USB mode wont install the Mass storage drivers and Kies wont recognize
My issue is that when I connect the phone on Windows 7 32bit the phone and the internal SD card will connect but one I try to click on anything inside the phone or card the phone will immediately disconnect and then reconnect. When I try to click again it will repeat the disconnection. After that, I don't even have to click on the phone or card directories, it will disconnect then reconnect about 6 more times. Eventually it will be stable and not disconnect. This is extremely annoying. Anyone else with this issue.

Just out of interest, do you have to install Samsungs Kies Software for a particular reason? I hear alot of people complaining about it, but not sure why you need it in the first place...
Is it to sync information? I am guessing to transfer info on and off the phone you dont need Kies installed..

There are alternatives for every thing available in Kies (maybe with the exception of syncing with outlook, I'm not sure).
I got a Kies update alert today (Version 1.5.1.10074_2) btw, perhaps it works better than the earlier versions for those who have trouble? Get it here if you're interested. They're not very good at posting change logs at Samsung though, so I have no idea what the news are.
you can (theoretically) use kies to:
install the usb drivers for the phone
transfer and sync files
sync contacts etc
install an online firmware update
....however since kies doesn't actually work at all, or not properly, you only really need the usb drivers which you can download from softpedia
I installed the latest update to kies, and now kies doesn't seem to recognise my phone, it just gets stuck on connecting the device please wait?
Anybody have any ideas as to how I can fix this?
Otherwise how can I access my phone from the laptop?
if you use google apps, or sync with your google accounts/contacts/calendar/etc
then you do not need the PC software.
i sync my outlook stuff via google sync, same with contacts, emails are from gmail. so i don't need the desktop piece.
how do I transfer a file from my laptop to the phone though?
or music etc?

Disconnect the usb and reboot the phone. If that doesn't help disconnect and try a driver reinstall.there's an option for that in Kies.

if it's like NPC then u have to completely uninstall (everything ....use an uninstaller program), and install the new version from scratch, or it usually does not work properly
I am having trouble connecting my i5801 to my pc using the USB cable.
Initially when i had a 2GB micro sdcard on the phone it used to give me trouble connecting to the PC very often and it used to take me atleast 6-7 tries to establish the connection.
However since i have put the 32GB micro sdcard it absolutely refuses to connect to Kies.
The phone has no issues connecting to Kies with an sdcard, it does so within seconds.
Kies is updated and installed properly with the latest version.
Both sdcards are functioning properly without any issues (well, apart from this atleast). Both are detected easily while using the memory card reader seperately.
I have tested the usb connection across 2 different computers with same issues.

i also had problems with my kies.. my phone could never be connected to kies... contacted samsung... they said me to update my windows vista... i thought it to be weird but decided to give it a try..
removed kies.. updated my vista... downloaded latest version of kies... installed.. since then there are no problems...
u too give a try... who says...!!!
I once had the same problem with an 8GB card.
Someone on this forum told me to delete the files with very long names... I did and Kies worked fine again. (I don't know the max lenght of the filenames...)
Did what you guys said, the problem still persists.
It works properly in the Mass Storage mode but not in the Kies mode.
Any more ideas?

Solved It!
After a few days of breaking my head over my phone finally managed to solve the problem.
Whenever i connect the usb to the phone there is an option that comes up in the notification bar asking me to "Mount" the phone. So before clicking on the connect via Samsung Kies option i had to scroll down down the notification bar, click on Mount and only after doing that, when i click on Samsung Kies, it connects easily. Doesn't work in the reverse order. And the mount option is not a popup just sits their silently in the notification bar.
Anyway thanx for all who tried to help. My question is why it doesn't mount it automatically?
Kies 2 is now out of beta!

As far as I can tell, kies 2 does not have any driver problems. I have installed it on XP and Windows 7 32-bit. It uninstalls the old Kies and during installation, installs new drivers.
I am using W7 64bit pro. I can install Kies with no problems, but when I connect the phone (sgs II) I get an error message that The driver did not install correctly. Of course I cannot connect to Kies, thoug I can browse the internal and external card content. No advice worked, tryed to reinstall, use virtual XP 32b, etc...
It works on my desktop 32b but I cannot read the phone numbers, but I need it on my laptop which is running W7 64b pro. Any ideas?
Install Drivers
Open kies and then in the menu bar on top of kies select tools and install drivers.
Tryed this. Does not work.
If the above does not work for you try this.
Run Kies as administrator.
When installing Kies did you follow the instructions to the letter?
Reason I ask Im running Win 7 64 and have no issues with KIES.
Go to Samsung.com and download the Kies from there to your PC.
Uninstall the current one from PC along with any drivers reboot PC.
Now install new KIES without fone connected and follow the instructions.
WHen asked to connect fone do so and not before.

Rubbish, running on my win 7 pro 64bit toshiba lappy.
i guess this is not about flashing, so odin wouldn't help much, especially, since odin needs the working drivers as well.
i read somewhere on here, that the driver installation fails, if there is an external sd card inserted in the sgs2, when first connected (afterwards, there will be no problem on this point).
i agree with the others on other points though, kies really sucks to some extend. the only good feature i used, was media syncing. but for syncing of any kind (not only music and photos, but also savegames and other data) i use microsoft synctoy now, with the galaxy connected in mass storage mode. flashing with odin and syncing with 3rd party apps really makes kies redundant.

Install the drivers manually from the Kies' "escape" folder. Use the Windows Device manager.

have you tinkered between usb debugging on and off
Read somehwere the first time you you use kies...have kies running, put phone off usb debugging. then plug it in
I had same problem with my desktop. i went into device manager. there should be an explanation mark next to phone. uninstall driver then reinstall telling it to get driver from the web. then start up kies. ps make sure kies isnt running when u install. hope this works took alit of messing around for it to work for me but eventually did.
I have W7 with 64 bit and fortunatelly KIes works on mine. I live in US and I downloaded Kies from Samsung UK site just in case because the phone was bought from Expansys and is coming also from UK. Maybe try to check on this solution. Also I vaguely believe that I had to disable firewall or Eset during the installation, but I may be wrong on this. That sucks that yours doesn't work. Wish you luck...
I am running Windows 7 in 64bit and everything works perfectly. Except I dont like Kies and used it only once.... to check what its all about.
I do not remember the installation process, but usually hardware must not be plugged in until the driver is actually installed. So just uninstall everything, install it again and THEN when everything is done plug in the phone. It should be then be recognized and working.
However if you want it just to put music on it or copy files in general, better ditch Kies and make your device be recognized by your computer like an USB-Drive.
Go to Settings > Applications > Development (Translated it from German, might be off)
There you check the USB-Debugging option and have no need for Kies anymore.
What USB port are you using? Experience from the cappy forum and personal experience shows that using a USB port right off the MB is best. Not sure if it's a power problem or what. My cappy would always charge and be hit/miss on recognization using the front USB port on my computer. Using a rear port produces connection everytime. I'm on a cappy right now, just waiting for the US release date to get GS II.
None ot the above worked. Giving up. Tx anyway.

Have you turned off USB debugging?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
yes i have.
I was just prompted to update my Kies software. Before I did so, I searched for the download because I have had experiences of the update function screwing up the installation. (Uninstalling and then installing via the exe corrected the issues.) I couldn't find it. On the Samsung website only the older version is available for download.
I installed the update and everything went okay. Now I keep getting two prompts when I connect my Galaxy S II.
(Translating from German)
1. Album information cannot be imported. (Albuminformationen können nicht importiert werden.)
2. Reconnect the device in Samsung Kies-(PC Studio) mode. Kies doesn't support the current connection mode. (Verbinden Sie das Gerät im Samsung Kies-(PC Studio)-Modus erneut. Der gegenwärtige Verbindungsmodus wird von Kies nicht unterstützt.)
Now I can't connect my device with Kies.
I will reboot, repair the installation and see if I can get it to work. If anybody knows where I can download the installation file, pls let me know; it would make my day.

If it sucked anymore it would put Hoover out of business real fast.
Now I'm connected. Didn't reboot my computer. I turned my phone off and then back on and I also let Kies re-install the drivers. Now I can connect.
The first prompt about album information was due to having a cd in the drive, which Kies couldn't read the album information from. Why does Kies try to read the cd when I'm just trying to connect my phone?
There is no firmware update for the phone.
When I tried to synchronize with Outlook I got two prompts
Contacts: 50% or more have been deleted....
Appointments: 50% or more have been deleted....
I of course aborted the synchronization.
I took a look at the GUI and the settings to synchronize all contacts hadn't been selected. It also showed a strange folder by the name 00000. Pointing to a folder or file without extension called TestDD. In the GUI I selected to synchronize all contacts and it worked without prompts or issues.
I was able to copy files to the phone without issues.
Kies still doesn't show the artist of mp3 files in its GUI and yes the tags are complete.
Kies sucks, not enough to replace Hoover and not enough to make me stop using it. Copying files is not such a big deal, I love the one-click ability to synchronize with Outlook

As in my previous post, I've had issues with Kies after using the on-line update function. This time it was the same. If for example I started Kies to synchronize contacts everything functioned properly. I exited Kies. Then if later in the day I just attached my phone (without starting Kies) just to transfer files from and to the external SD card of my phone via Explorer, My phone wasn't recognized and I had to go into device manager and re-install the drivers.
I checked in the installed software panel and although I had updated my Kies installation, the version displayed in software was Kies version 2.1.0.11112_41
Today I decided to check if a standalone Kies installer was available and I was happy to find it. I uninstalled Kies as well as the USB drivers, deleted all folders including the ones under My Files and Documents and Settings, cleaned all references to Kies as well as the USB drivers from my registry and installed Kies using the installer and now the issue is resolved.
They must have fixed some things in this version. While synchronizing contacts, for example, it noticed differences between the contacts in Outlook and my phone as well as differences between entries in my Outlook calendar and the calendar of my phone, which wasn't the case before re-installing.
I also noticed that after installation, the installer for the USB drivers is now located in the USB folder of the Kies program installation folder. In previous versions the unpacked driver files were located there.
Yea, I have the problem even tried on two different PC. What going on with the recent Kies version. Can any developer or technical give some response???? this is so painful
