Lapdock HARDMOD - CottonCandy ICS FXI - NATIVE

Just wanted to let you all know that although my Atrix is no longer in use, I have the lapdock lying around.
It is a good piece of hardware and I have been toying with finding a way to embed the actual atrix itself inside the lapdock. However, the real problem there is that there is no use for doing that since the Atrix's native dock functions suck!!! I also considered and toyed with the Raspberry, but its not meant for that.
However I have come across this puppy: FXI Tech Cotton Candy
and my plan is to embed it inside my Lapdock and create something actually useful with that hardware.
The FXI Cotton Candy officially supports GB, ICS and now Ubuntu 12.
For anyone who doesn't know what it is:
"FXI Tech Cotton Candy packs more power in a tiny space. It has a dual-core ARM Cortex A9 as its processor and the quad-core ARM Mali-400MP for graphics. Connectivity options include Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and WiFi 802.11 b/g/n. On both ends are USB 2.0 and HDMI out connectors and there’s one micro USB 2.0 connector on the side. It has 1GB RAM and a microSD slot for up to 64GB of expandable storage."
Given its size, it easily fits disassembled into the dock connector that rotates on the actual lapdock.
Does this sort of thing interest anyone?
I'll keep you guys posted as my adventures with that continue.

Did you pre-order one?
If not, the likelyhood of you getting one this year is almost zero. They have stopped pre-orders as they have filled up on those, and currently have nobody to do mass production for them. Since this is their situation and they have to find someone to build these units, you most likely won't see any this year, as it takes time to complete all the necessary steps to put a product into production. Your best bet may be one of these to test out your idea:

If you can't get hold of one maybe look into the MK802 PC, you might find that easier to add onto the lapdock too looks like it already has a hdmi and a usb so i think you may just have to buy some extra wires and hook it all up. And it's only $74

Should work perfectly fine... people have shown that you can connect a PS3 to the lapdock. Only question is: will a regular ICS or Ubuntu 12 have the lapdock drivers..

I think that their generic... The fact that CM7 doesn't have any of Motos lapdock drivers yet you can use the keyboard and mouse proves it...

You and Alaq have made me **** bricks. I normally figure stuff like this out early on. It's not until now that I've realized that connecting usb and hdmi ports will make the lapdock a sologig. A real upgradeable laptop, how about that?! It would be nothing to find screens of a similar size to replace them in any lapdock model if you wanted to do so. Still ****ting bricks.

I knew about it's potential ever since I saw that ps3 video (Either last year or the beginning of this year...), but it wasn't till this month that people started releasing PCs on a stick... But yea it would be amazing for school to have a razr thin laptop that runs smoothly and has 8 hour battery life (probably more because it's no longer charging the phone), and that's why I decided to start on the project (In my sig), I'll release everything when I'm through with it.. I'll have to record everything that I do to the lapdock for you guys...

This one looks really interesting.....in technical side.
But it is not efficient if you compare the price with typical windows netbook
199$ + lapdock price is more expensive than netbook.

Once you get it sorted, could you make a video showing the performance? I love the idea and have been considering making a sort of 'dummy phone' like box to house a raspberry pi but this little a10 stick computer looks like it could be a better option. For me, it would have to run linux as android on a laptop is just wrong as far as I am concerned It looks good, but would not be worth it unless it is faster than webtop imho.

TF300T n00b with questions & observations...

Bought my TF300T Christmas day and picked up on the 26th. So... I'm a TF300T n00b.
I do have a Kindle fire that I TWRP'ed and installed a ROM (from here) and I liked having an Android tablet (wife has an iPad) but I needed a bigger screen than the Kindle had. I also have a Droid Razr as we recently switched over to Verizon. AND.... an Android VM in VirtualBox on my computer (I've run linux since 2005). So I'm not a tech n00b so much but a TF300T n00b for sure.
This is a nice tablet! I'm still learning. I wanted to put music on the TF300 and try it out as a media server. My DirecTV receiver can see media servers on the network here. I have Media Tomb running on my PC but wanted to see what the TF300T could do.
I had a hard time figuring out how to put music on the TF300.Linux didn't see the device when I plugged it in to USB. I found that a bit odd, but....
Not wanting to boot to Windows for this I eventually found AirDroid so I could move my mp3 files over to the TF300. That seemed to work out well and AirDroid appears to be well written. Certainly has a much better interface than I expected from a free app. AND.... I don't have to boot to Windows just to move music around.
Tried Google Play Music, but.... just not feelin' the love on this one. I like that I can put all my stuff in the cloud, but I didn't like how slow it was to move it to the TF300 when I wanted some to stay on the device. JetAudio looks good. Haven't tried much else for music.
I definitely want to get a case for it. It is SOOoooo thin and light, I'm afraid I'm going to drop it. I need a case that does equally well as portrait and as landscape because some stuff I do on the tablet seems pinned to certain screen orientation. I'm kinda diggin' the Caseen Skinny case, but I don't see it in navy blue right now.
KEYBOARD DOCK.... I'm torn as to whether or not I want one. I'm really not looking for a laptop replacement as I don't have a laptop to begin with. The extra battery power is an attractive incentive, but.... not sure I want to go this route yet. If I had wanted a netbook I would have bought a netbook. This one is a "wait and see".
OH! And I want to get an microSD card. Not sure I need a 32gig one. But may get a 32gig for the TF300 and a 16gig for my phone. Or maybe the other way around or 16gb for each of them.... *sigh* .... I think sometimes my butt gets sore from sitting on the fence for so long.
ROTTING.... not sure what I gain by rooting this tablet. I gained a LOT by rooting the Kindle Fire and flashing a new ROM on it. But if the TF300T is serving my needs then.... what would I gain by rooting it at this point?

For me the stock Asus ROM experience just isn't good enough. The IO performance just kills things at times. The only way to get really stellar performance was to unlock the bootloader and flash a custom ROM and kernel. Since I tried that I haven't looked back. Currently running clean ROM and unters kernel. The performance difference is very noticeable.

what would sell me on it is if I could somehow connect other devices to its keyboard over BT
I figure the adapter's like $20 a good BT keyboard is like $30 and the battery pack is worth like $30 or $40 so the question is; is the portability of a keyboard setup with a usb port worth $10? probably. (you can find the docks on sale for $100 lots of places [bestbuy, amazon, newegg, etc]

It didn't feel as fast to me on the stock kernel. I don't think untermench has updated his kernel to work with 4.2 yet but I might be wrong about that.

I'd recommend the dock. It's really handy, and the keyboard is much easier to get used to than I thought.
Side note, I was actually gonna get the Chromebook, too. Still considering it, instead, but since I got this tab+dock for ~$400 w/ tax, the difference would be about $100 after tax...

If you haven't yet unlocked, like me, I've noticed nova launcher has considerably sped up my pad. I rooted out the box and have familiarly with recoveries and roms from my galaxy nexus but the pad is a little more delicate when it comes to that. My advice take your time and read up before doing anything
As for rooting on the stock rom, you can use titanium backup to perform full backups and root explorer to modify your build.prop file for some speed tweaks and even delete system apps. Just make sure you make backups and know what you are doing or you won't be able to get ota updates anymore. Read read and read more first

I didnt see as much benefit in rooting either but the slow performance was kind of annoying.
But then I went to try on the launchers. The performance was unacceptable!
Moved onto browser2ram and cleanrom 1.8GHz OC. I love this thing now.

I picked up the black docking station at best buy for $49.00 yesterdday. Waiting on my TF300B1, pick it up this coming week, they didn't have any in stock so i had to order it. $349 for 32gb unit didn't sound too bad at all.

That's not bad. I paid $299 for mine but I got it around Black Friday . They're usually around 399 so it looks like you did pretty good.

MK808B is new. I have it - can vote that it is better than UG802. No antenna MOD needed.
UG007 is new.
V8 is new with external Antenna.
Just monitor Geekbuying, Aliexpress and similar sites.
Then 2GB RAM devices coming. Then quad-core devices coming. A15 is probably coming.

Quad Core devices are already available

i own an mk802III and i'm very happy with it. for what i read rikomagic is the most reliable company providing updates and solving bugs... i just hope that some dev will put some interest into it...

Specs look good, except no JB yet.

I've just got the mk809 , no trouble with wifi my router is in another room and I get good signal., device is quick and paired with my Logitech k400 wireless keyboard it make a great combination.
Come with 4.1.1 jelly bean pre installed.

I have an MK808 and love it. It is super fast and handles games like a champ. I don't have the newer Bluetooth model and its killing me. I bought it for emulators (N64 and PSx) thinking I could use one of many USB-BT adapters I own. But none work.
So I'm stuck using a wired controller or a wireless 360 but I want to get the Sixaxis app setup and working with my PS3 controller.
My goal is to get 2 controllers setup for some Mario Mart 64 action.
The MK808B would fix this but it doesn't seem to be getting any dev love. The original MK808 that I have has several custom roms and development.
I'm thinking of maybe selling my MK808 and waiting. Bluetooth in these little sticks really seem flaky ATM across the board. I have 2 new USB BT sticks coming from china that supposedly work with the CM10 roms. Minus Bluetooth, the MK808 is great.
The GK802 looks good on paper and I almost picked one up but it really is having some issues with stuff. For a quad core... it has issues doing what the MK808 can do.
I might pick up my neighbors LG G2x Tegra 2 phone and just make it a dedicated TV unit.

We've got some roms over at armtvtech. A little custom with root and play store fix.(I've also got something special in the works heh)
I'm testing the usb fix right now.
We've also got full Ubuntu images.
The GK802/HI802 are a bit new atm. So please keep in mind that many people are just starting to receive them. It takes a little bit for people to get adjusted to a new system in order to make custom images.
I'd say that for the moment when it comes to custom roms the MK808 is king.
I expect the GK802 to take over the throne pretty quickly.

Any word on the mk809 II? I really want to het one of these devices but do not know which to chose. I did see the archos one and i do like the bulky remote for the use of the games. Are there any good game controllers to use with these devices for regular android games and emulators.

I have several controllers that work. A corded SixAxis and a wireless 360 and a USB PC gamepad.
I heard the Archos is really bad... and in comparison to these Android sticks.... that's bad.
I have an MK808. I recommend the Bluetooth version for more options. Or the GK802. The MK808 plays every game I've thrown at it. I don't know how the GK802 plays but it should.

There is no logic to their numbering schemes. The MK808 is getting lots of love and the 808b is following suit. Look at the forum traffic and pick.

I have been following the progress on the development of these devices for a while and am glad to see prices have come down
it would be helpful if someone who knows could compile a table of the various models and specs. Atleast by the naming conventions and when they appeared on the marketplace, the hierarchy from high to low seems to be

MK808B-same as the 808 but has bluetooth?
MK808-Dual Core A9?
MK802-being the original A8 1 GHZ Single core version.

I see that mk808 is very popular, but it seems to have a lot of glitches, especially with the wifi. thats what really holding me back in general. I am still debating if I should go with the 808 or 809 yikes!

I'm going to get a Nexus 10 soon but first some questions.
- Does USB OTG work? I want to connect mice, keyboards, USB flash drives, and Xbox 360 controllers. Do all of those work?
- Overall impressions of the device? Recommend it?
- How bad is the app ecosystem? Do phone apps look really ugly on the tablet?
-How is battery?
-Is there a good stand, dock, or case that's recommended?

It works but you may need root for certain things although I don't think a mouse would work as it is a touch device.

Love it, far better than any Android tablet at the moment.

A lot of apps have been improved and look better than before but not all, although I haven't found any apps that look horrendous.

I find the battery is awesome, also a custom kernel/ROM can have a big impact on it.

I use the poetic slimline case, there have been some issues with it not fitting properly but mine is fine, not sure about docks/stands

I use the usb otg cable and a four port usb hub. Keyboard and mouse are just plug and play. Which is the case for all the android devices I've owned. I've been rooted since the moment I bought it so I'm not sure if you need root for thumb drives.

I personally love the device. I had a Asus Tf101 before and this is a far better product.

The apps are improving quite well and even the few non tablet apps that I use don't look horrible. Not sure if you can see the online play store in your location but if you can there is a tablet filter that can give you a better idea of the available apps.

For the most part I use my at home after work. I find that it can easily last me three days.
-Is there a good stand, dock, or case that's recommended?
I have the iblason black faux leather case and the brown suede bear motion case off of Amazon. I'm finding now this i prefer the iblason which is about 18.00 on amazon.

Haven`t tried personally yet. My usb OTG is on the way

I personally recommend it, based on it`s specs, it`s still the best bang for the buck. But it also greatly depend on your needs from a tablet device.

Given the high resolution screen, yes some app do look blurry or pixelated if not optimized for tablet. For me, i can live with it, we will get more and more tablet optimized apps for sure.

Great battery life although below my expectations. It might be due to the device processing a high resolution panel.

unfortunately no stand or dock at the moment from google. but the cases do make it stand. Just get a case that suit your needs.

The stock unrooted firmware doesn't mount usb thumb drives when connected with OTG. The "Nexus Media Importer" app from the play store provides a smooth workaround for that, well worth the 3 or 4 USD I paid for it.

You may wish to consider an Asus TF700. For example, I have the integrated keyboard, an USB non-powered hub, a laser printer (hooked to the USB hub), Bluetooth speaker (powered by the hub), multiple USB hard storage devices (for moving large volumes of data such as movies between devices), a microhd 32 GB card (up to 128 GB possible), in addition to a regular SD card. Shortly I will add an USB ethernet adapter for additional speed when using it at my desk. All of this is with the stock configuration and is well integrated into the tablet experience. The TF700 may not be as fast as the Nexus 10- but I have found the speed very good with the optimal mix of apps. My impression is that the TF700 is a more versatile device if you need multiple storage/connectivity options ala a netbook and find the Android OS suitable for your needs.

When rooted, you can use the free StickMount app.
Some custom roms may mount USB sticks for you automatically, but I haven't experimented with this.

Dontvbe worried about software ... There are very inteligent developers outhere that work for this device . eventualy all the software problems will be resolved . be worried about the problematic hardware side and how to be able to return the product more faster process problems free .

I had problems with Stickmount (can't recall what now). I've been using 'USB OTG Helper' which is a great app. As for how phone apps look: it's not that most of them look bad; they're just not optimized to take advantage of the extra screen real estate. But I'm finding more and more of my favorite apps have a separate tablet version, or install a tablet-optimized one if a tablet is detected.
I also recommend the Moko Slim-Fit leather case (Amazon). Very well made.

The reason why I'm not considering the transformer is because it isn't running stock Android. And I'm not sure how the dev community is for it. Plus it's almost a year old and a new ones coming out soon, I don't know if I can wait.

The Asus Transformer series is comparatively minimalist with regards to Android customization versus other brands- though bloatware is an issue. There is quite a bit of 3rd party developer support. TF Android stock and custom updates have been prompt- though I am encouraged that Asus was cautious with 4.2. Of course, newer models will offer better performance- and where the need is not critical- it might be better to wait. Again, the hybrid market seems to be in rapid transition and the Transformer series is hardly the only option- for example, Windows 8 hybrids from Asus, Lenovo and others. I only made the suggestion because you focused on expandability- not a core strength of the Nexus 10. But the Nexus 10 has a lot of other strengths- though it to will probably have a faster replacement or hardware refresh soon...

Sorry for re-opening an old thread, but it seemed relevant to my situation.
Hi guys, finally decided to take the plunge and shell out for a Nexus 10. This will be my first tablet purchase, so naturally I want it to go as smoothly as possible.
Although a lot of what I've read from purchasers here seem to suggest it's anything but a smooth process with Google. I've terrified myself half to death with some of the stories here. I should probably also mention that I've never had to RMA any device before, but I'm almost fully committed to the fact that I'll have to with this, after all I've read about it.
So. What are the main problems are that people have experienced, which required RMAs and are they still present in the newer batches, seeing as it's almost 6mths old now?
I've looked around these forums for the past half week and found what I believe to be a fairly conclusive list and their possible resolutions. Is there anything else beyond this list I should be watching out for?
RMA for sure
- battery issues - less than 6hrs
- faulty usb/hdmi socket
- constant wifi drop
- speakers buzz
- no sound via hdmi
- crap stuck under screen
- loose to touch/clicky camera lens
- light bleeding (only RMA if excessive)
SOFTWARE UPDATE
- constant restarts with stock rom
BEARABLE WITH CASE
- creaky back cover
Also, is it easier to return to Google or Samsung should I need to RMA?

Damn I'm lucky. Not one problem with my nexus 7 well the wife's now that I went and got a 10. And not a problem with my 10. And I picked my 10 up from a guy on craigslist for 375 for a 32gb.

Well mine just arrived 20 minutes ago. So far none of the issues I've seen around these forums. No creaky back. No creaky camera lens. No crap under the screen. It's on charge at the moment, so I can't check the other things like light bleed etc.
Oh and for reference it's an R32D model if that helps anyone. I'm in the UK too, for anyone questioning if UK is getting new or old stock.

Agreed... I am not a developer any longer and do not have ties to get it moving... I guess this will be a waiting game... When we can see root & ROM

No gigabit Ethernet? For a streaming device that you install and never move again until its obsolete? Some of the product decisions these companies make are interesting.
Also, no IR=no integration. I know everyone here is focused on hacking it, but say you do get XBMC running on it smoothly? No universal remote or control system capability?
I tired to resist Apple and got a Roku 3. Dinking around with a second remote and the lack of Netflix profiles sent me over to the dark side.
Kind of not feeling this. The processor is nice, but all the things you are talking about can be done out of the box with something like a G-Box Midnight MX2.

Got my Fire TV today, can't wait for the hacking community to get in on this one. Looks like its got lots of potential, especially in the retro/emulation arena with the optional remote.
A USB keyboard works great, but the generic WMC ir receiver didn't. So that quick, cheap "hack" didn't pan out.

IR is really irrelevant.. I dont use it.. Bluetooth is all we need!

It's not only because you don't use that it means irrelevant. A lot of people have good IR remotes like the Logitech one...

Agreed.. My logic and reason is IR is minimally 20yrs old tech that's all but obsolete. IMO...

Why would you ever need gigabit ethernet for a streaming box? Even a direct play blu-ray tops out around 40Mb...there is absolutely no need for gigabit.

no one needs 10/100/1000 but is it very handy when it comes to transfering files over a gigabit network. Also what does it hurt since gigabit has been out for years. Ouya/ Mojo/ Fire tv all have fastethernet and its annoying that they didnt put gigabit mostly because my whole network is 10/100/1000 and i hate bottlenecks.

I'm all for fast networks, all our computers at home have one or more solid state drives so even gigabit is not enough at this point. I get why didn't they put it on the FireTV but maybe the hardware inside couldn't talk to the port at 100MB/s anyway so it might not be that these boxes couldn't have Gethernet but that if they did install it your actual throughput might be crap anyway.

Nice that we have a forum/section for this device.
More 2.0 USB ports (no need for a HUB) and Gigabit Ethernet would have definitely made it more desirable.
USB 3.0 will probably come with next year's qualcomm CPUs.
The biggest thing that I'm looking forward to is AOSP ROMs, and the bootloader hacks to install it.

Lol, looks like others jumped in before I got here. For me, it is mostly about downloading to attached storage quickly. Plus, why not? Annoying to leave out a $2 part to make the magic $99 price point.

It is only sort of obsolete. The thing is, it is the only pretty much universal control platform for AV gear. With a few exceptions like this and the Roku 3, pretty much every AV component has an IR in.
I don't have a Logitech, I have an old URC MX-880 with an RF base station. All my gear is in built-in cabinets in what was supposed to be the media niche in my family room. I have a custom built low profile fireplace mantle, and our firebox is sitting on the slab. This allowed us to mount the TV above the fireplace at a more reasonable height, and more importantly, in the center of the room. The only wires showing are the sub cable and its power cable, and even those just barely. The surround speakers are all in-ceiling ( our family room has almost no wall space...its all open to the kitchen, foyer, bedroom hallway, and windows). So the RF remote kicks butt. The Logitech remotes are nice (wish URC had as many IR codes), but they are not as flexible as a URC, even something as low-end for them as an old MX-880. I used to be in the business, so I have CCP, etc. and can program it myself.
I am not willing to give all that up for a $99 box when I have another $99 box that works with it. Plus, she-who-decides wants one f%$ing remote.
Heh, still better than an X-Box One, lol. (Google "longer cable for Kinect" if you like to read rage.)
