Can the Evo sync with a computer like the Motorola Atrix?

So I just watched a video on the Motorola Atrix, and Wow! I want those features. I'm wondering if any of the geniuses here at xda are working on, or know of a way to make the evo sync with a laptop like the Atrix does with it's netbook type device. This would be amazing. Syncing it with the tv like they do with the Atrix would also be a plus. Is this something Google is behind, or is this all motorola? either way it's pretty sweet, but I like Sprint, and not so much At&t. not interested in trading my new phone either, but man that stuff looks useful. Hope someone has some ideas, thanx.

Nope, can't do that. There is however an app available now (it's in beta version) that allows full hdmi mirroring to a tv. You just need the app, a special kernel, and an hdmi cable. I've been using it lately, it works nicely. Search in the development section for "full hdmi out"

it would be really amazing, and worth some money to me, if one of the bright minds at xda put their mind on trying to make something like that work for the evo. it would seem that your just porting the software, but that's why i'm not cooking roms. I just don't know enough about the limitations

Last I heard it doesn't "sync" with the netbook. What it does is function like a laptop dock; the netbook takes over as the input device(s) and screen for the phone.
I could be mistaken though.
However, in the event that I'm right, all you would need is the full HDMI out to a HDMI-capable display, and a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Of course, since Sense is crappy closed-source on everything but the kernel, you can't really implement this too well. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a "webtop" mode in CM8 though...

Nice, so in theory Gingerbread could do it? if that is the case however, the $499 retail price on that netbook looking device that the phone docks into, is pretty steep for a screen and a keyboard. guess I'll have to wait and see what comes a long in the months following.

While were on the topic of "atrixing" the Evo, why hasn't there been more monitors released with an HDMI IN feature (like a TV). I cant seem to find anything that looks compact enough to make a small lapdock without looking ghettofied.

First let me say the Atrix is cool, and it's awesome to see a new cool design like this. BUT, the dock is basically a monitor, a keyboard, and a battery. It adds nothing to the computing power of the phone, and at $500 you could have netbook or a tablet that's more capable. That being said,i still think it's pretty damn cool.

To those that said it can't be done, wrong, try again. Updated hardware aside, ALL Snapdragon based devices with a usb port can do what the Atrix does from a hardware standpoint, ALL OF THEM. Here's why, the Snapdragon family has usb host built into design.
Here's what's missing:
1. USB host (software)
2. Standard USB device drivers (they do exist)
3. Full UI out via USB to DVI adapter for device without A/V out ports (hmm, software)
4. For devices with A/V out ports, a cable and, let me guess, software
5. Lastly, a KB/mouse, USB hub and a screen or combine the three and you have the Atrix lapdock
The core tech is available, has been for close to 10 years now.

Guys the "laptop dock" is actually a full blown netbook that is software crippled. The only thing it uses the phone for is the internet connection and file storage.

That's incorrect the "laptop dock" its just a shell housing a screen, keyboard, trackpad, and a battery. Its powered by the phones hardware, and a hidden linux os that is built into the phone.
Would be cool to have something similar on the Evo. But I wouldnt pay $500 for a dock that's insane. 0.o

I think it's stupid. Just buy a dual core netbook for $325, use dropbox, and tether your phone to it. Same thing. Plus you don't have to deal with Moto's bum ass Linux build.
What I'm waiting for is a dock/sync that scales Android/iOS/WebOS/WP7 to a desktop OS. WebOS and maybe WP7/Windows8 look like the most likely to get it right the soonest.

EVO 4G Tablet Dock (Concept) UPDATED

Hey Guys,
I have had this idea for a while and just got around to making some concept renders of a tablet that the EVO would dock into.
This 10.1" tablet would work only when the EVO is docked in it (a la Atrix 4G). The tablet would utilize the camera, headphone jack and processor of the EVO 4G, while using the mini HDMI and USB ports to transmit data and images. There is an internal battery, front facing camera, volume rocker, mini HDMI, and mini USB port on the tablet to make using the device easier.
Advantages of a tablet dock:
-Less expensive (after phone is purchased) than a standalone tablet
-Real integration of phone and tablet (contacts, pictures, apps etc)
-Keeping bulk to one side reduces the torque on the wrist and makes the tablet seem lighter
-Using existing phone to power the tablet reduces the amount of internal components, reducing the thickness of the majority of the tablet
-Uses phone service instead of a separate data plan
Disadvantages:
-Dependant on phone specs (CPU, WiMAX, etc)
-Not compatible with other phones (although I think Google should standardize phone connections and locations)
I would love feedback and suggestions, and keep in mind this is a first gen concept. I will be updating this based on what people have to think.
I have created a sliding dock for my phone which holds the phone firmly in place and connects HDMI and USB in a sliding case (Sedio Innocase with HTC Media Dock modified to fit). This will be used in the prototype tablet.

I emailed it to HTC and Google but there are a lot of gaps still obviously.
I have no desire to make money off of this, just to get something like this in the market. Maybe a job would be nice haha

The only problem I see would be running honeycomb only when docked unless we plan on always running honeycomb

I'm not sure what the Atrix is, but were you thinking something like the phone in that motorola commercial where the guy is in custody at the airport, and trying to tell the cop that its a phone, AND a computer?

Now, if we can just get the batt issue fixed on our lovely evos; I'm wondering whats needed to power the lcd?

Yeah it would just be an extension of the phone, service and all. The atrix is that phone you mentioned with the laptop dock, but they use a custom linux operating system that boots when the phone is "docked". This could either just mirror the existing OS or could load honeycomb or some other operating system.

This is awesome and all. But again, how will touch inputs work? Has anyone attempted to get clone the screen, via HDMI, to a touchscreen panel and have it work both ways on inputs?
That all happens at the hardware level, PCB, etc., etc.
This is an excellent concept but unless the phone is built with being able to use an EXTERNAL touchscreen it's not going to work.

yeah exactly, just like the Atrix laptop dock.
There's definately room there for three flat batteries between the screen and the and case. If the can fit batteries in the Galaxy Tab 10.1 or the IPad 2, they can do it here.

that's the hardest part about this, and you're entirely right. We need some way of essentially splicing into the EVO 4G's digitizer and pretending that the tablet's touchscreen is the same. That, or we can emulate touch as a mouse (which is enabled on custom ROMS) and send signals via bluetooth, which would be very laggy and battery intensive.
I know that you can buy touch screen overlays for netbooks that enable touch over USB, so there is hope! Unfortunately, these usually are single touch and not very accurate, and they are another layer that needs to be applied to the screen.
I think that if HTC or any large company were to create a tablet like this, they would be able to integrate a solution with a phone the way the Atrix works. Hopefully this becomes a trend!

Sweet idea. I'd love to have this set up. I hope HTC likes it.

Razrdock Mod [Stage: I. Planning][Updated :P]

Alright I give credits to seven2099 for bringing this up, so now we have two projects to make the lapdock run on it's own.
So instead of using the CottonCandy FXI, I will be using the MK802 Allwinner A10 (When it gets back into stock).
giuanz has helped out a lot by getting a hold of one of these MK units before me... And gave very good details on the problems...

So far: We discussed Voltage and amps that will power the MK, so far there are problems, but this is at a glance as we don't have a unit yet. But it seems that the lapdock won't proide enough juice to power the MK...

Alright so guianz has recieved his MK units and 2 problems have come up...
1. The resolution is not compatible. The HDMI output on the MK doesn't give the lapdock resolution 1366x768. A solution may be done by extracting the file from the razr leak for the webtop that decides resolution and putting it in the MK unit. It may or may not work, lets hope it does!
2. The output:
It would refuse to boot with any USB port I tried it with (red light comes up but no boot) - it would only power up with the power supply. Didn't try with lapdock as I'm still missing the adapter cable but I bet it's a current limit problem, like it probably really takes more than 1a to boot.

So according to geeky-gadgets & the chinese retailers we have 2 USB ports, one full and one micro. Great isn't it? Not really, because the lapdock provides power through the micro-usb and the A10 has it's own power port... So we need to cut up the USB and solder the cables to two different connectors. The data cables will be soldered to the micro-usb connector from the HDMI upgrade kit, the power cables will be soldered to the power connector that comes with the A10.
But now we get to HDMI. This will take more time... We are gonna use the [HDMI Male to Micro HDMI Female Adapter] it will convert the hdmi from the lapdock straight to normal HDMI, this is a bit hefty so we will have to use a Xacto knife or similar to cut it up... Once we get it's guts then we can make room for it when we hardmod the lapdock.
III. OS + Software
To come, once I buy everything and get them connected.
What I think for now: Since ICS doesn't have any of Moto's drivers in it yet we can connect it to the lapdock and use the key+mouse proves that they must be generic drivers. (Have to test this theory)
IV. Hardmod + Placement
To come, once I finish the other two...
V. Guide
To Come, once I finish everything.

No No, i'll read your post and this remember me the mod of lapdock (HDMI) for use with other device (PS3). I plan myself to build an adapter for HDMI & USB for use it with other device (it your case the MK802 Allwinner A10).

This is about trying something new, seeing if it can be done, and what the results will be. Some people like to try innovative ideas "just because". I don't believe Alaq asked for your approval to move forward with his project, so I would suggest if you don't like the thread, (or it's title), that you move on yourself!

To my knowledge that Bionic lapdock is identical to the Atrix one but with the HDMI and MicroUSB connectors reversed.
BTW I ordered three MK802's in the 1GB RAM version and the status has just changed to "shipped".
Now that I read the rumor about an early ICS demo, I am torn between waiting for ICS and trying this mod.

You can run Android ICS or Ubuntu on the MK802 I read somewhere... So I'll look at all the possibilities...

1. MK802 audio is only through HDMI - to use a headset when I want, I think I'd add a 3.5mm stereo switching jack somewhere on the back of the lapdock
2. MK802 has no bluetooth - but the pics in the link I posted show a USB bluetooth dongle attached to it - I think that's a good idea if you want bluetooth
3. MK802 is only 802.11 b/g networking no n - I suppose you'd have to live with that.

there are more sellers on Aliexpress who claim they have it, although the only seller which already has feedback is sold out.

btw2 I just made an experiment. I forced discharge of my Atrix battery to 0% - basically till the point it would only boot in charger mode not full OS.
With the lapdock open, it would charge. With the lapdock closed, it would not charge.
So my idea of how the lid open/close switch works is like this:
1. lid open -> lapdock gives USB power to phone
2. lid closed -> lapdock checks HDMI port for signal. If HDMI signal present, lapdock gives USB power. Otherwise USB stays off.
That also would explain why, when you connect the lapdock, the first thing the phone does is send that M logo ove the HDMI port - just like a way to say to the lapdock: "hey wait for me I'm there, give me USB (so I can recognise the keyboard and trackpad) and I'll boot webtop".
Now I think if this logic turns to be true, you would not even need an extra power switch! Just open the lid to power on - it will stay powered on as long as there is HDMI signal - and when you want to shutdown, youĺl do it through the menu.
The only annoying thing is that there won't be any notification when the battery is about to run out of juice.

Clambook - Compatible With iOS and Android

Just saw this on the internet and it looks something that may interest alot of us on the atrix forums. Its basically a lapdock for all phones(iOS and Android).

Just by looking at I think it will be priced higher than the Lapdock and I'd also like to see how it would work on an iOS device because on Android it would change to a tablet layout

The 4S has HDMI mirroring with a dongle, it could merely use that. Not nearly as good an experience as Android in tablet mode would provide, but it'd be something.

Does look sexy as hell but if it costs a cent over 199 us no deal

I want one if:
1. Webtop 3.0 is all its cracked up to be in terms of speed compared to current webtop
2. This actually enables webtop mode and not just entertainment center/mirroring
3. It actually works with the Atrix period
4. It costs less than $250

At the end of the day this is where its leading, Moto has abandoned the webtop on ICS and as is Ubuntu is distended to come on the new android's one way or another.
So why not have an all in one interchangeable lapdock for your mobile device?
The spec are changing in the industry every day, even as much as I bash my webtop into a usable Micro Laptop its limited. So why not pay for this device and then look at upgrading when you can without losing the lapdock. I see the netbook market taking a hit if this thing takes off.

So heres a question, can hdmi/usb be adaptable to MHL?

seems like there is no usb host device integrated into it, so probably its not interoperable with USB, it should be with HDMI though (at least so i assume). Yh I know what you're taking about , the USB drives are trending nowadays but I hardly can figure out a reason for them with 1.0 Ghz and 512 ddr2 ram which I believe is the maximum specifacion those USB form factor can go. They’re limited to arm instruction set , which means arm software and not x86
so nothing will work instead of android , however I have heard of Ubuntu ARM port.But I believe installing Ubuntu or any other Linux on that USB will be hard to implement
and I think after you install ubuntu you can customize it to make it more like XBMC

It is basically the Galaxy S3 board with extra peripherals, more than enough for a decent low-powered htpc imo. Runs ubuntu pretty well considering there are no open source Mali drivers.......yet

That's awesome, might have to pick one up. Especially with XBMC and VLC for android this would make an incredible media solution.

I think it looks awesome even compared with the $25 Raspberry Pi's out there. I'd like to get one, but then again I can use my GS2 for just about everything I need and it'll have more power. It'd be good to have one of these little guys in case I went to someone's house for a weekend or on vacation and needed a basic PC to browse internet, etc.

I've been following these a lot and so far have been pretty disappointed.
There are a few different ones, the best specs-wise being the cStick.
Always Innovating HDMI dongle (only selling to vendors I believe)

I have been looking at cstick as well, but the lack of information makes me consider it a dead project.
I have ordered a Tizzbird N1, which is more focused on being a media player but will have Google Market (with custom firmware) and the possibility to run apps.

I have had a mk802 for a month or more. Its OK not great. Recently it doesn't want to grab wifi which makes it almost useless. Its laggy and for sale.

i'm also using the mk802.. had it for about 2 weeks now. didn't do much with it other then install XBMC for android on it. and a few pluging to stream my movies and shows. it gets laggy at times

i'm also using the mk802. und Raspberry Pi
both with xbmc
The Raspberry is for Pro Users the MK802 run without knowledge.

another thing, I have a XBMC on my original xbox, so your saying i could hook it up to that and browse internet thru the TV? i am sure i could do it with the 360 i have as well..

Quite slick. I found this one on Amazon; definitely added to my wishlist to go with a shiny new HDTV for my living room.

I'm also considering to buy one, but don't you think it can very easily overheat?
