Inductive Charging for Nexus 7? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Would this be possible? I know you can achieve AC charging on the Galaxy Nexus with the palm pre inductive charger but would it be possible with the nexus 7? Does it simply not give out enough power to charge the tablet.
Just noticed HP touchpad has it as well....should have done more research! Maybe this will become an info thread for people willing to attempt it since the back cover is easily removable.
So the touchpad charger (wired) will charge the N7. Does anyone know how much the touchstone puts out? I would like to have this charging mod on my Gnex and my N7 soon with just one touch stone in my house. Just want to make sure the touch stone can put out enough juice for the nexus 7.
Thank you,

Not sure but don't think it would work. I have it on my gnex and the touchstone puts out 1 amp where the N7 stock charger puts out 2 amps. If it did work it would prolly take twice as long to charge but I could be wrong!

HP Touchpad also uses 2 amps charger (in fact won't work with any other) by default and touchstone can charge it even it it's competelly dead. Full charge takes about 4-5h (i usualy charged it during the night), but i never bothered to check how much amps it gives via touchstone. I think it should should work with Nexus 7 as well.

That's what I saw, and also on the HP site it said same Approx. charge time as wired charger. Has anyone torn down the HP touchstone yet anywhere? I'm very interested in this. Wireless charging at home and possibly as a car mount as well.

Any luck with wireless charging mod yet? Would love this feature!!!

Nokia makes a wireless charging adapter, it plugs into a microusb and lets the phone work with their charging plate. I bet you could take that apart and it would be easier to find then touchstone stuff because you can buy it new. I'll see if I can find a link.

[Q] Anyone planning touchstone palm mod?

Getting ready to do this to my gnex and thinking with all the pucks I have laying around it would be fun and beneficial to attempt this with the N7.
Anyone else have similar thoughts?

I've thought about it -
But, the charger may not have enough juice. The Touchpad uses a different Touchstone charger for that reason, as I understand it. Maybe the smaller N7 would work.
I'll watch any homebrew projects to build a touchstone interface - but I'll probably wait for a charging dock that uses the pogo pins. That would be as convenient as the inductive charger, for me.
I understand what you're saying. Maybe we can rig up two coils for the backplate/battery and use a combo of two pucks lol.

Facepalm... This thread has been dead for a year now... Why did you have to bring it back?

Any danger in using another device's charger?

I just noticed today, that my HTC phone basically has the same setup. The same charger, then the USB to micro-USB cable. So would it be the same thing to charge with either cable?
I was shuffling with the 2 chargers today.. but if I only need to use one, then that's even better! And I can travel with just 1 charger for my 2 devices too!
Shouldn't be a problem i hardly ever use the correct usb charger for my devices apart from tablets that need the higher power output.
The nexus may not work on the phone charger but the phone should work fine on the nexus charger.

The Nexus7 charger is 5v 2A, look at the HTC amp output if it is 1A it will take longer to charge the Nexus7, if it can even keep up if the unit is on.
I would use the Nexus7 charger for the phone and tablet if you want to cut down on taking chargers while going on trips.
I use the Nexus7 charger on my ET4 and it goes to full charge pretty quick....lol

Yeap you are correct, my phone charger is 1A.
Will using Nexus 7's 2A output charger harm my phone? Or will it just charge my phone faster? (which sounds like a great deal btw:laugh

Another good idea! My HTC's charger cable is longer..
I guess I'll use the Nexus 7's charger with the HTC cable = win
I prefer the Kindle Fire charger or the Playbook or HP touchpad charges took the OEM charger that comes with the Nexus 7
I just got another Playbook charger just for that purpose, it is 6 ft long, much longer than the Nexus charger.

As long as the charger puts out 5v you'll be fine.
Also, stories on xda suggest not gaming on the n7 on low battery while plugged into a charger other the packaged one.

[Q] Inductive Charging

Is it possible to do this?
Why? we have pogo pins

In that case, what product utilizes those?
(So excited just got it today)
Currently there are no docks that makes use of the pogo pins (at least, none that I have heard of, and I have been waiting for one as well). It really is disappointing when manufacturers release great devices, and then either fail or take forever to release accessories for them.
There were some leaked photos of an official dock with pogo pins ages ago, but it hasn't surfaced. Sigh.... Check it out here: http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/31/nexus-7-dock-and-covers-leak/
No HDMI on it either unfortunately, though that was to be expected.

Damn thats stunning. want.
Will something like this ever be possible, like connecting something to the pogo pings?
I think the issue is finding an induction coil capable of pushing the juice needed. Then you could theoretically do a mod with leads going to the 2 pogo pins. I've been following some of the pogo pin threads & apparently when you push the electricity into the charging pins It thinks it is in a dock & tries to route the sound out the other 2 pogo pins, leaving you no sound.
Since the USB charger can barely keep up with battery drain while running, the induction charging will probably only slow down the discharging. It would work if the N7 was turned off. People have had it slowly charge when powered off via the pogo pins.
Yes it can be done. I can't remember where I saw it but someone took two coils from the palm pre and installed into the Nexus 7. It took two coils to maintain 5v to charge the N7. Possibly on Google+ somewhere.

Induction Charging N7

I was hoping to start a little project on my N7. I love induction charging and want to set it up on my nexus 7. I was wondering if anyone who has gone through this/know about it/enjoy posting could give me some advice,
Most specifically:
Best dock+backcover combo
Thinnest coil plus chip
Fastest charging
Thanks in advance everybody, can't wait to hear your 2 cents!!

I haven't actually seen anybody fully implement inductive charging yet. However, this guy started doing inductive charging:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/101739011161245720271/posts/fAse7vGmc3q
Well, one easy way of doing it would be to buy a Qi standard inductive charger and a Qi standard inductive charging case (for example, the Palm Pre Touchstone case) and then pull the internals out of the donor case and fit them inside a Nexus 7 case. There's a small amount of soldering required and perhaps some fiddling with the fit, but the components are relatively simple and lay relatively flat. It wouldn't be too hard at all.
Unfortunately, I believe most current Qi charging solutions are relatively low amperage. This would make for a pretty slow charge on the power hungry Nexus 7. Not too bad it you're using it as an overnight charger, but nowhere near as fast as a 2 amp charger. It's possible that you'll find an inductive charger with a higher current output but if you're looking for that it might be easier to build one from scratch,
I did the Touchstone mod on my GNex. It only puts out .56 Amps. Their are kernels with "quick charge" that would let it ramp up to 1 amp but that was it. I am wanting to play with it too, but I'm more thinking of making a dock with POGO pins instead.
I gotta say, they touchstone is great for my GNex. I have a touchstone mounted in my car, so it holds it in place & charges. Occasionally the charge connection gets interrupted (hit a bump, etc...) and it takes 10 seconds to restart. I added additional stronger magnets to my case, but still I don't think the touchstone magnets would do very well holding a tablet instead.
Also, additional magnets screw with your compass...
the touchstone also has a strange angle for watching movies on the tablet.
also i dont know if you can make the induction work with 2amps like the asus charger. (which would be awsome for superfast charging)
If you used the pogo pins for this it would disable the audio if using the correct kernel (see my post in accessories). You would have to modify the kernel to disable it stopping speaker audio out (should be just commenting a few lines though).

The Touchstone is adjustable to whatever angle you want.

[Q] Which Wirless Charger?

What wireless charger do you buy for use with this phone? Thanks.
well if they ever decide to release pricing and availability information I wouldn't mind grabbing the Fatboy Wireless Charging Pillow for the new Nokia phones.
This is probably a stupid question, but presumably the wireless charging won't work if there's a case between the back of the phone and the charging unit?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
As long as the case isn't metal, it should still charge.
Since it appears Google isn't making their own, can someone list a few good wireless chargers compatible with the Nexus 4? Thanks.
just do a google for " qi charger" you'll find a few

Nope!
I would my best bet. The wireless charges that the iPhone use like that energizer pad?
#Galaxy Nexus HSPA+
Any QI Charger will charge the Nexus 4.
Touchstone chargers will not work.
Possibly this or the one-position variant of that product.
I have one of the Lumia 920 fatboy chargers, will that work?
I had the Nokia 900 wireless charger from Verizon and it wouldn't work correctly w/ my N4. It kept cycling from charging to not charging. I know it wasn't the chargers problem because it works fine with my dad's DNA. So not sure if I've got a faulty N4 or if the charger just isn't compatible. Anyone else try it?
I have the energizer wireless charger, while it works perfectly with my nexus 4, I must recommend against it.
The reason being the back of the nexus is glass, the surface of the charger is glossy plastic and combined with the slight angle of the charging surface, my nexus is happy to slowly slide on the charging surface.
Easy fix by putting some glad wrap on the surface, but detracts from the clean look of the charger

Exact same problem here (charging-non charging cycle). Neither the wireless charging stand nor the wireless charger on the JVC sounddock works for me (both say they should work with qi compliant devices however)

I really think its a software issue with the Nexus 4... I have the fatboy charger and sometimes its perfect and other times it doesnt work properly
I'm waiting for a Chinese qi charger...
