I apologize in advance about the lack of posts. I lurk often, but never really felt the need to create an account until now. I recently purchased a display Iconia tablet at Walmart. (We store used a retail version because we weren't sure if we were actually getting a demo unit in.)
So this was brand new. I took a chance purchasing it, because I'm almost certain there is some way to remove the software, albeit factory reset, rooting the thing, whatever. I haven't tried any of it, because I just got home from work. I thought before I'd even attempt it, I'd ask you guys, because I've always known this forum to be the go-to forum for anything Android related.
If all else fails, I'm allowed to return it for a refund.
Thanks.

There is a ton of development for this tablet. Use the search function. You will find an answer to any question that you have.

Just so you know, you guys weren't supposed to do that and should have received a return authorization for it recently. Try sending back one other than that and your store is charged for the device rather than recieving credit, which comes off your bottom line, affecting your MyShare. But I know for a fact that you can basically turn it in to a retail version based on we had to as someone locked ours with a passcode and all reset methods on the tablet were useless to remove it. Just find a system image, rename it update.zip, put on the root of the SD card, boot into recovery by holding volume down and power, and let it do its thing

My store is a bit odd about that. Any display devices we receive are usually thrown away or sold to associates after the item is deleted or recalled. The only thing we return are laptops and even so if a customer wants to buy the display, they don't hesitate to sell it.
But ill be attempting the suggestions now so hopefully everything goes smooth.
Good news! I purchased a demo as well and successfully rooted mine.

So I have kind of an interesting situation. A few weeks ago, I ordered a new Nexus7 8gb for a gift direct from the Google Play store, and shipped via UPS. On the day it was delivered, UPS's tracking showed "Delivered to the front door" however it never made it there. So I called Google Play Support and they had me reply to an e-mail with the words "I consent" to allow them to refund the charge and "remotely disable the device" to make it "unusable as a phone or as a computing device for any purpose".
So I did that and they promptly refunded me, and I placed a new order, which ended up being delivered with no problems. However, yesterday my neighbor knocked on my door with the original shipment in hand, apparently it had been delivered next door, and they were away at the time so they hadn't seen the package until then. Out of curiosity I booted up the tablet fully expecting it to be bricked once I connected it to wifi or at most after I had attached my google account or tried to do anything on the Play Store app. However, it has so far worked flawlessly with no visible restrictions, I even updated all the apps and performed a system update with no issues.
Just to be on the safe, and more honest, side though I sent Google a follow-up e-mail to let them know what happened and that the device had not been disabled. They responded just to say that it "can be disabled at any time from now" and to make sure anything I had on there is backed up.
So my question(s) to you guys are, first has anyone had any experience with this, aka Google remotely disabling the device, and know what actually happens to it? And second, since it appears Google has no desire to collect the hardware back from me, is there any way to bring it back to life after that the disabling action has happened, via a hard-wipe and using custom ROMs ect, or will it be essentially a $200 paperweight?
Thanks!
I think, tho maybe wrong but when they send out the "kill" signal it goes out for limited time so that if the item is not switched on during that period then when it is switched on it could/should be fine.
I may be wrong but past experience with a found iphone would suggest this to be the case.
As for the last bit I would as assume that once killed only google can breathe life back into it.

Ah ok, well if thats the case maybe I should just power it off and wait awhile before attempting to use it, if theres a chance I would be able to avoid their "kill signal" altogether.
I just assumed at the very least they would blacklist the tablet's IMEI/serial immediately, so that even if the device itself wasn't bricked it wouldn't be unable to utilize any of google's services.
Flash a custom ROM and recovery asap I say.
Good on you for being honest and telling Google about what happened. Good karma goes a long way! I'm more surprised though they didn't request you send it back to them.

Yeah, I was surprised too when they didn't respond back with instructions to send it back to them or at least have UPS come pick it up, since it was UPS who was really the one at fault.
It just seems like a waste to me that a shiny new Nexus 7 will now most likely just become trash, which is what led me to ask here if there was anything I could do to save it from an early grave.

I'm not sure how its wrong if I notified them that I recovered the device, and all they said was "it will be disabled soon" and made no mention or request to have it sent back to them? Its apparent they don't want or need it back (I'm guessing the costs they'd incur in return shipping, handling, repackaging it, ect. would make it not really worth it for them to try to resell.), so is it wrong I'm trying to get some use out of it?
Also I believe I read that they file a claim with UPS in these instances, so most likely receive some type of reimbursement from UPS to at least mitigate the loss, which is probably another reason they haven't asked me to send it back. *shrug*
@shibbybypass - regarding your offer I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with it yet, probably going to just let it sit awhile and see what happens. But I will keep your offer in mind.

Yes you are
He contacted the vendor, they did not request the unit back. Nothing wrong here.
Now if he didn't contact google, and was trying to get around the kill signal; that's another story. But unless you are calling the OP a liar.. nothing to see here.
Dude what is the status of the device now ???
Is it still working, I have a friend with the same case
But his device still on and google said its scheduled to be disabled

I think there are apps that give us something like that if the device is lost or stolen.

We owned computer / networking business in the mid 80s to mid 90s.. what happens is the seller files a claim with ups. they are compensated for there loss. UPS Does not care about the item at that point . UNLESS Google files to ups item has been found. Then ups will ask for it But only Sometimes.Obviously google is not taking this second step.. Im sure this happens more then you would think. UPS Looses alot of packages. they just handle so many more its not so well known..
As far as them killing or locking the device.. Its only for google WALLET And the wallet nfc function. If you unlock lock then re-unlock the device it will have a new nfc id .
Here is how i know the above sentence..
First i bought a 8 gb nexus 7 from play store. (8 was out of stock ). It had bad screen lift. I called google and they said i could it order a 16 then gat a rma for the 8 when the 16 comes.. So the day i got the 16 gb . before i took it out of the box. I called google got the rma for 8 gb. Got the email telling me to disable wallet. I did so.. after i opened the 16 setting it up the screen cracked under (another story i will not get into here) I called google to explain what happened . they told me to send it back and to keep the 8 until i got a replacement for the 16. While setting the 8 gb tablet back up google wallet would NOT Work..
i called google back . they told me to unlock it again . lock it back. Remove it from my wallet account.. Then i could unlock it again and set it up...
this i done. and it worked fine. So it makes me think they do NOT RENDER THE DEVICE DISABLED Only the wallet features..
sorry for. such a long story ..
since you asked them if they wanted it back and they did not . i would say your fine with keeping it.. Keep the emails documenting you contacting them.
Good Luck
This stupid dock has been perpetually out of stock since I got my Note 2. It would play peek a boo with us for usually 12 hours at a time before going out of stock again. Well, for those of you who want one, now's your chance to get one at half off.
https://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/EDD-S20JWEGSTA
This is YMMV, so take it for what it's worth. I had no trouble placing the order, and was off the phone inside of five minutes.
All you need to do is call Samsung's order hotline and place an order for the Smart dock. Tell the rep that you had been e-mailed a 50% off code last year when you registered your phone with Samsung, but the dock has been mostly out of stock since you got the code. The code is now expired, and you were told someone could reissue a new code to you when it was back in stock again.
The number is 1-800-757-0280.
The representative did not issue me a new code, but instead simply took 50% off of my order over the phone with no questions asked. She simply said, "Ok, that's fine. I'll just need your credit card and billing address, and it'll be $49.99 plus tax with free shipping."
Note that this dock also works with the Galaxy S4 as well.
If they ask you for your old code for some reason, just hang up and try again, or post in here, and I'll give you my old, expired code to use.
Receipt added to attachments.
Your Code
Could you PM me your code? The rep wanted it in order to generate a new one. Thanks

It would be easier to just call back and try to get a new person. Here's a 50% off code that was found in a Google search. rE169748w
Normally, they will just have you place the order over the phone, instead of issuing a new code.

Any reason this wouldn't work for the GS3 (current work phone). Also, I've heard that this only outputs to portrait mode--any recommendations on apps to force landscape mode--I see quite a few on the play market.
Thanks

You could try auto-rotate switch in the market. The dock is listed as being compatible with the Note 2 and S4.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this...I just assumed with the wealth of knowledge on this forum, someone here might know the technical reasons why this would/wouldn't work w/ the GS3, as I'm much more likely to get a quick answer here vs asking a random email at Samsung.

Their staff is actually pretty knowledgeable if you call them up. Just ask for tech support or something. I know the S3 has MHL support, but I'm not familiar with the USB pinouts, which may be different than the Note 2. Quickest answer is going to be a short call to Samsung.

I saw the day before yesterday that someone had posted about a sale at Staples for the FTV. I ordered one in the hopes that it might still be rootable. I paid $84 for it and had it shipped free. I got it the next day...(today).
Last week I purchased an older Dlink router for $15 because my high end router didn't allow URL blocking and I wanted to be able to block updates from it. Now I'm thrilled that I did! I have 5 of these units all setup perfectly to boot to XBMC the way I like and with all my shortcuts already installed although they were purchased from a young college computer science major who programs these better than any I've ever seen. Today I decided to try one myself.
3 or 4 times during the setup the unit started to download the new software and I pulled the plug to stop it out of sheer panic. When I finally realized that it was never going to boot up completely until I let it go through the entire setup routine I bit the bullet and trusted that the router would do the trick. The unit looked as though it made a complete download and also a complete install of the new software..... I knew I was doomed with an unrootable unit, but figured at some point someone would come up with a way to root the new firmware.
When it was all done I immediately went into settings and checked the firmware.... Low and behold the router did it's job and the unit had the old firmware on it!!! It's now rooted with XBMC installed and updates blocked thanks to the fantastic FTV utility posted on this forum. As far as I'm concerned I just got a unit for half price! If I had the extra money I'd get another one!
I only post this to thank everyone here who has answered ignorant questions from me and posted so many great ways to modify and install apps on this unit. In just a couple of weeks I feel as though Ive learned an immense amount of knowledge.... thanks to this site and it's great members!!!

Crazytala if you are looking to use xbmc on the box just sideload gotham 13.2 on it my new box has the latest firmware but gotham and addons like mash navi x livetv are all working fine on my non rooted box.
I just picked one up this week that was purchased at a Staples in Fort Worth Texas and it had rom 51.1.0.1_user_510055620 on it. Already have it clockwork modded, rooted updated and blocked future updates. If I had the money I'd go pick up a few more!
My local Staples had plenty and the clerk says that have not sold any yet. The firmware is rootable. I stayed up late last night rooting it, tonight I will finish the rest and get this baby running.
Guys, if you can pick up a rootable version, Would it be possible to get a shipping quote to the UK? I can pay via PayPal etc and would chuck in some more $ for the time.
I've got a UK Fire TV, but I don't see root coming anytime soon. I'd simply sell my unrootable on eBay. Would go along way of covering the one coming in. You can get rootable ones on eBay UK though shipped from America, but fees etc bump the price up.
Thanks
Are you guys sending your tablets back to be replaced for the battery issue?
Voted yes because I have filed RMA for the battery issue. However it seems jury is still out as to whether Nvidia will require actual return of the old tablet. Poll could be reworded to capture this distinction. May vary by geography, too..
Marc
im sure people will figure out a way to make sure both tablets can be used
Well since the tablet has the potential to catch fire then it would be illegal to mail the tablet since you cant mail "flammables" right? lol
Yes new tab for 0€ of course
Envoyé de mon Nexus 5 en utilisant Tapatalk
Yes, but I was conflicted about it. On one hand, I don't ever want my tablet to start on fire. But on the other, I've had FAR fewer issues with my tablet (i.e. zero) than I've heard of other people having, so I'm concerned that I'm sending in a flawless tablet and may receive in exchange a tablet that could end up with cracked corners and that becomes laggy, etc. Best case, my usage of the tablet is the reason I've had no issues with it, but I just don't know... I do use the hell out of it, so I'd have expected that if use was the cause, my tablet would've been laggy and heat up as much as anybody else's.
I'm RMAing, but I'm mixed on it. I bought it a week before the announcement and considered just returning it for a tablet with WiFi that actually works properly, but the features that I want the WiFi for others can't do as well anyway so I'll get the new one and hope the smart people around here figure out how to block the kill switch between now and then so I have 2. I am annoyed about the fact that they must have known before the announcement since they implemented the changes in ota 3.1 for the rma process and battery check, which would have taken time to plan, considering my unit was one week out of the store, one would think they would have pulled the flammable stock off the shelves and replaced with newer units.

Indeed recalled battery are prohibited by most courier, air freight and import, export are not possible under worldwide regulation even for recycling. So freight will be fairly expensive for those return if they elect to get them back.
Using ground local freight it could be possible but I am not sure about this.

Wont the old tablet be rendered useless anyways? If Nvidia are kind enough to send me 2 replacements for the 2 that I have with Y01, then I'm happy to send them back.

Yes it will be considered useless but there is talk about some people wanting to install a custom rom and/or tricking it into not erasing itself and keep using it. I would like to keep mine for spare parts,I'll take out and recycle the battery and keep the device for spare parts like LCD screen and such.
country not listed
does anyone has made the recall process from a country that is not listed at the registration recall program???
thanks in advance

The way I see it is that now that Nvidia has presented us with an RMA option on these tablets, if you choose to continue to use it after getting the new one and it catches fire and burns down your house, you may be in limbo over your insurance payout.... "knowingly continuing to use a faulty product that has been recalled"...
I dunno, the moment my new ones turn up, if there is no requirement to return, the 2 I have will be dumped in a bucket of salt water to neutalise the battery, and binned :good:

I think he is right. If they are so fair. I don 't wan't to be fault if someone dies
I wanna keep it or give it to a friend or my dad since I can't sell it.
Its not fair nor legal to sell an affected tablet that can always catch fire or kills itself when restoring the factory image or possible after an OTA update.
Conflicted on whether or not I want to send mine back. One on hand, free tablet! But on the other. Nvidia didn't have to do this, they could of simply told us to RMA them, send them in, wait for repair and wait for them to send the tablet back. I haven't had any problems with the battery overheating or anything.

I'll be interested to know if there is a way around Nvidia's method of rendering the tablet useless..
Time will tell.
Has anyone received their replacement yet?

Got my replacement today. As others have noted the old one has not been killed. I flashed bliss pop just in case it may help but I turned it off and placed it in a box. Have not decided if I plan on keeping it or not. May, if it does not get killed, use it as a dedicated kodi box for my bed room

Got mine today. But as others have done. I wiped the device and installed SlimLP on the "RMA" device. I'll leave the other stock(rooted) for now and see what happens. But at the moment, as reported here, on reddit, on the nvidia forums and etc. The old devices arent locked yet. Maybe they are giving people more time to move data from one to the other? Who knows.
I'm in Australia and got the RMA approved email 2nd August, but have yet to receive any notification that my replacements have shipped .
Waiting on WIFI and LTE versions to arrive... I'll switch them off when I get the replacements and wait for a solution... I just hope they don't take too long issuing replacements to international buyers
I would guess that they would not issue the kill notice on these until all of the faulty units have been replaced...
