What is the use of LTE when you're limited to 3GB only?
I'd rather have UNLIMITED HSPA+ instead. And thats what I'll have when I pop my AT&T sim in it.

I have yet to even go over 2.5gb on LTE. Everyone gets limited either LTE or HSPA. 3GB on HSPA and 5GB on LTE.
Unlimited data customers with a 3G or 4G smartphone will be slowed down if they use more than 3GB of data or more in a billing cycle. Those with next-generation 4G LTE phones can use up to 5GB before speeds slow down.
Nothing is unlimited anymore. Not even the grandfather plans. Better research
Enjoy your slow HSPA, I'll enjoy 60+ meg download speeds.
Edit: People who think LTE doesn't matter, haven't been on LTE.

Um... I'm on WIFI and thats FASTER than LTE. When I'm at home and work I'm on wifi, and when I'm out i'm on HSPA+ (I rarely even spend any time on my phone when I'm out having fun so there really is no need for me to have super fast speeds... I can do everything I do when i'm on wifi on my HSPA+, which is streaming live music, auto upload photos videos to drop-box etc... So really LTE is pretty much unnecessary for people like me. If you don't have access to wifi at all times, then I can understand your craving.

I didn't go through the whole ad, but it did say this on the spec sheet
HSDPA, HSPA+, HSUPA, LTE

Oh and it's priced at $722.97 today.

dunno why speedtest picked UT server, so with a server closer to where i live, should get ~50Mb over WiFi.

Quick question. I am confused about how the specs are presented. Newegg and the ebay auction listed in the OP say 3G. If it has the appropriate bands, will it get "HSPA+" on AT&T?

I just did a test and I was getting around 19Mbps down and 6Mbps up on my home wifi. But why does this even matter unless you're downloading LARGE files ON your phone? who downloads large files on their phones? Honestly, 1Mbps is MORE THAN ENOUGH for usual day to day email checking and for web browsing and I'm pretty sure 99% of people do just that instead of downloading large files on their CELL network. And its funny, because even if you downloaded LARGE files using uTorrent on your phone using LTE you would run out of your monthly limit and AT&T would charge you another 30 for 3GB data... lol. So not only is LTE a BIG gimmick, but its stupid to be downloading stuff using your LTE network. I mean whats the point of having LIMITED LTE on your phone when you can get UNLIMITED HSPA+? On my AT&T UNLIMITED HSPA+ i get 10Mbps down... its is WAY more than what I need and if i wanted to download something using uTorrent on my phone I can do that WITHOUT worrying I would get charged for going over since there is no limit!! My brother also uses unlimited HSPA+ on his galaxy note and downloads 13gb of data every month and he's been doing it for over 6 months now. I doubt he's 'missing' out on LTE.

T-Mobile claims Nexus One can handle 4G like speeds.

So I called T-Mobile today because they have promotional 4G rate plans right now. And I gave T-Mobile my IEMI number and according to their systems the nexus one qualify for the upgrade to their 4G network. I upgraded to it for an additional $5 dollars a month. Now to my knowledge the nexus one was not built to handle 4G band speeds but I did notice a major speed boost on my device. Maybe not a full 4G experience but definitely feels like my 3G is on steroids. Btw I'm on the EVEN MORE PLUS PLAN.
That would be awesome...I thought you would need a new radio to get it. What radio version are you using? Anyhow, do post up some Speedtest results!
i was wondering about this because HSPA+ is just a newer version of what Tmo 3G phones use, afaik there is no change in the bands they use to communicate and it really should just be as simple as flashing a new radio to a phone to get it to be HSPA+ (aka 3.5G aka T-mobile 4G)
now i doubt that a provider will be willing to update their current phones because they want you to buy a new phone that is "for their 4G" network. its possible though that the Korean radios that have leaked may have this support in them and might explain why your seeing a speed increase.
something else you can do is go into settings>about phone>status> check mobile network type to see if it says HSDPA or HSPA+
there is also another more advanced screen that you can check but i forgot the silly #*#* code you put into access it but i know if you install the app anycut you can make a shortcut to the screen as well
with anycut just make a shortcut for "phone info" to pull up the more advanced screen.
I'm getting 2.87MBps down, and 1.30MBps up. And no I didn't do any radio update. I just told the T-Mobile I wanna switch over to 4G and they said ok and switched me over for an extra five dollars a month.

that's not HSPA+ speeds, HSPA+ speed varies from the same as HSDPA to twice as fast.

in this test the N1 maxed out at 2.41MBit down and the G2 never went under 3.32Mbit down and topped out at 8.16Mbit down.

that is very good for 3G but uncommon and probably about as fast as you will ever see on HSDPA.
here in the east SF Bay area i usually get about 1.0 Mbit down on my N1 on T-mobile but the speed i see varies and depends highly on local network traffic and what my signal strength is at
Keep in mind that I'm in the subberbs

N1 here and I had the original data plan that cost 24.99/mo. Old family plan I had for ages since I had the SE Xperia X1, which I still have but do not use .
I have the 3G+ speeds ever since I started using the CM roms, but I never "upgraded" the data plan for faster speed.
How much were you paying beforehand if I may ask? And was it a data plan as well?
I don't think the Nexus can handle the same speeds as the G2 or the new Mytouch 4G.
At work someone has the Mytouch 4G and we did speed test with both phone, mine is on the latest Korean radio and he's download speed was always double than my Nexus.
So again I don't think is possible.

I dont really understand 3g and 4g speeds, but isnt the latency more important? I dont think 3mb vs 10mb will make a huge difference on a phone, it doesnt on my desktop connection, but isnt the biggest hurdle the time to actually get the network to connect to the internet? From what i have noticed, the first website you access takes alot longer than the subsequent sites.

Depends on your usage...if you download files, then speed DOES matter, MUCH more than latency. If you simply browse, you do need a MINIMUM speed, but then latency is mucchhhh more important. I would consider 5mb a minimum speed for good browsing.
On computers, you CAN use faster speeds to access the pages faster by using pipelining...dun think phones have support for that though

Call them back and get back on the $20 preferred Android Internet plan. They misinformed you. The data plan you are on does not determine the data speed you see. There are a ton of people on HowardForums with old grandfathered $5.99 T-Zones plans and $9.99 web2go data plans getting faster speeds then what you are seeing.
You are wasting your money with any plan more expensive then the $20 preferred Android Internet plan and if you can get on a cheaper one it will work exactly the same.
It's very possible that T-mobile is throttling accounts now that they can offer faster overall speeds.
It could be a (****ty-consumer wise) way to exploit the 4g (mis)nomer.
I can tell you this I am a T-mobile RSA and I am not sure what the extra $5 amonth the guy did but there is no 4g data plan. Every Android data plan i use in the store is the same plan I give ppl on every android phone T-Mobile sells. There is no 3G or 4G plan. Every plan is the same unless you are looking at the 200mb, 2gb, unlimited plan. I would say call 611 and tell them to change it back and run speed test again. T-Mobile in the soon to be future is moving to a 3 tier data plan. By this I mean they are going to let you pick a 200mb, 2gb, and unlimited data rate plan. Every plan is going to have the same speeds but limit you to what you can download before you are throttled or start to see overages. Call and get your money back.

I would be happy with a consistent 3.0mb. within a span of 3 miles I can go from 5mb to less than 1mb and lots of areas still are edge
last time i did a speed test maxed out at 2.8 Mbps down on Wind Mobile
and it was even less on Rogers / Fido, so i'm very happy
So finally pulled the trigger... TRUE 3g speed on this phone. I couldn't be any happier.
Only problem is T-Mobile network isn't the largest so I have a lot of edge network areas. When 3g is running its pretty darn quick though.

Thats awesome. I have been contemplating getting SIMple Mobile for use on my MT4G or G2, but, I have been thinking about getting a NS to use on SM.
Do any of the Visual Voicemail apps work on this (or any T-Mo phone) using SIMple Mobile? It is my understanding that any FlexPay or Pre-Paid providers cannot offer any type of Visual Voicemail services. I know, Google Voice would work ok, but I'm not happy with their UI, and other aspects of GV.
If any Visual Voicemail apps would work with SIMple Mobile, flawlessly, then I'm sold on both SM & NS.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Just figured I would give you guys thinking of moving to Simple a heads up. Their "unlimited" data is capped at 1GB. There have been reports of them shutting down your service once you reach this and charging you for prepaid data to continue use. Do your research before you jump especially if you like to tether or do a lot of streaming.

I've read the same thing on HowardForums. Since it's prepaid, you can pay for the service but they can disconnect the data anytime they want during that month.
I'm paying $55.99 a month on a non-contract basis right now, gives me 500 minutes and unlimited data. For SMS I simply use Google Voice which is free. I use it as my primary number instead of the T-Mobile one. I don't know my T-Mobile number even.
So for $60 a month, seems like Simple Mobile is more expensive and its very likely that Simple Mobile's contract for data is rather expensive hence why they cap at 1gb of data. I wouldn't expect you to ever be allowed to go past that given that MVNO's make much less profit overall.
I considered it, but quickly abandoned the plan. If it was actually cheaper (for me) I'd be willing to try it.

Woah 1GB data cap? Seems like a plan that would be good for parents, grandparents, or busy businesspeople who don't have the time/desire to do anything but light data use.

Sprint Versus Verizon data speeds / reception

Check out this article. Verizon's data is WAY faster than Sprint's.

I thought I read on here some where that talked about the Epic having both LTE and WiMAX chips. Anyone else see that thread and is it true??
EDIt: decided to title the thread to better to describe to the discussion.
If you want to be nickeled and dimed sure go ahead also they have data caps and are easy to exceed with these phones and they don't have a full unlimited plan and their customer service is worse than sprint. Also if you switched just cuz they had faster data your a bonehead cuz you could just use wifi at your house or almost anywhere you go if your really wanting faster data.

everything is true except the customer service part. I used to work for verizon, only reason I switched was because of the "real" unlimited plan, and the phone itself. Other than that yes they do have a better data coverage (they always have I think), especially with their LTE service coming up so quickly. but I dont use data as much, maybe more on pandora than anything else. but if you need to be constantly connected for whatever reason, then switch to verizon.
You know what's stupid? So what? Who ****ing cares that its faster. What good is all that speed when your capped at 2gb. Sprint wins. Ill take a slower speed for unlimited data. Not to mention the speeds differ depending on area. Fastest I've gone is 900KB/s. My home connection gets 1300KB/s max. Also I've realized that these phones don't need all that speed. Its become so fast that the phone is the.bottleneck.
To be fair, its true but I'd rather have 3mb DL speed wimax (average speed i get now) at UNLIMITED than 5gb capped 12mb LTE.

Yeah sprint is much cheaper and actually has a TRUE unlimited data plan... besides did you consider that they just released LTE so no one actually owns a 4g device to be pulling from the connection, unlike sprint who sold millions of Evos, some amount of epics, and and 4g network cards... Verizon will eventually slow down I'm sure
I've only used 4g once on my epic and its when I was passing through north carolina, and it was ridiculously fast.
No unlimited data = no business from me. Sprint already ensured my loyalty by my plan discounts but Verizon's LTE is going to be a fustercluck until they're forced to really compete for data dollars. And AT&Teabag is a joke when it comes to 4G right now as well. These tests aren't to be believed anyhow since they barely have anyone on their LTE network as it is. I live in a town with a lot of difficult zoning and get a minimum of 4 down and 1 up, sometimes much more, just about everywhere I go now. The only big tech advantage I see LTE having is better inside building reach and you will pay out your a-hole for that with Verizon.
Enjoy

Yes that's because sprint uses wimax version 1 . If sprint switches to wimeax 2.x then it will do 300megabits per second. Lte on verizon is about 40mbs
Lte will be on sprint in 2012 and full deployment in 2013

Actually its more because sprint is running wimax of 10mhz while verizon is 20mhz plus in a better frequency...that said even without wimax 2..if they just update to wimax-enhanced which is a minor upgrade..you would get 40% more efficiency (60% more for new towers) and speeds on par with Verizon's 20mhz LTE in only 10mhz spectrum....
Sprint has horrendous customer service, though I dont know if anyone else is any better.
Verizon has better coverage out in the boonies, when you need it most.
Unlimited data is Nice with Sprint, though you have to be a hacker to take advantage of it.
Does anyone know if they throttle?

Then again its coming from the CEO of sprint..the same guy who said who said 4g will be as free as TV....
I just wish I had 4g. I would take 4mbps down anyday. I get about 1 to 1.5 on 3g

Replacing home internet with 4g hotspot?

Has anyone considered this?
I have AT&T and was wondering if it would be better to get a 2 year 4g hotspot from like Sprint (is it unlimited) and I could use it at home and take it with me to use on my xoom etc?
It's unlimited, but 4G on sprint doesn't do so hot indoors. Walls block 2.5ghz spectrum.
Also, it looks pretty likely that sprint will start to tier data levels soon.
I keep seeing the Mifi 4g hotspots available for like $300 with no contract. How does service work? Do you still need to activate it and pay the $50 a month with Verizon?
I guess it may be cheaper to pay the $$ and get a thunderbolt out of contract and use the 4G on that instead rather than the $300 for the mifi wifi hotspot huh
Why not wait till the Xoom has 4G and use it as a hotspot, unless you got the WIFI because you thought 4G would be useless!

I bought the 4g version and saved $200 by getting a $20 a month data plan (which I use about 750MB of). I will not have to upgrade my phone to 4g for tethering and spend another $200. I can also talk and surf the web/navigate at the same time, that statement sounds familiar!
It's about a wash depending on your needs.

It's all about speed not volume for me. I would not necessarily use more data because it's faster I would just get those tasks done quicker.
Now if I used as a hotspot I would needs a bigger plan.
As others have said, the Sprint 4G MiFi doesn't do well inside. The high mhz spectrum doesn't do well to penetrate walls. You very rarely get full bars inside in my experience.
It sounds good to try and use a 4G hotspot for your home internet, but once you start spreading out a single WiMax signal (less than 10mbps down, capped 1mbps up) to several people and/or devices, you're not going to be as comfortable as you would be with home cable internet.
Now, LTE might be another situation because the speeds are much higher than WiMax and it penetrates buildings better, but still you're relying on a wireless signal to come down and then be spread back out to the devices.
For people like me who play games, I don't see myself cutting the cable internet any time soon. Not to mention that I regularly use 75gb+ of internet every month. Don't think theres a single carrier (even Sprint) that would be okay with this.
Verizon is a big bag of irony when it comes to LTE and pricing.
They're promising fast speeds, which for most people means streaming video and audio, but their pricing is too expensive to do much media streaming.
If I had deep pockets, Verizon LTE as a mobile hotspot would be great. Sadly, I don't have deep pockets. I think Clear/Sprint are currently the best options at the moment.
I'm not sure if I'm even going to upgrade to LTE. 3G seems to do alright, and I'm worried that LTE will be a battery suck. Battery is more important to me than speed.

LTE (and other 4G tech) is very much so a battery hog. There's no way that you can have that big jump in bandwidth and connection without affecting battery life until they expand the technology more (remember, the move from 2G to 3G was met with the same concerns).
I think anyone using an Evo 4G or Thunderbolt will quickly tell you how much WiMax or LTE is killing their battery.
ive got the mifi 3g/4g gadget and 4G and 3G work wonderfully inside the house in my experience. also ive tried it inside the company building and 4G works well.. it does help im in a major 4G city.. but the 4G works quite well indoors. it has about a 28-32 foot range so you could sit it near an external wall facing 4g coverage and be set.
i have used the novatel with a laptop, xoom, first gen ipod touch. definitely a good option. there is also the overdrive pro which has 4G verizon and att have the same mifi box also..
the key here is to make sure your primary location has ample supply of 4G and your set for unlimited. again the spees ive seen are quite nice.
and this is why people are introducing caps....
However, if you can stay under the cap....

Specifically Sprints 4G WiMax doesn't do well indoors, because of the specific spectrum it uses. Verizon, ATT, and Tmo use different tech and spectrum that has better building penetration...haha...i said penetration. But if you got it to work, cool.
yes mr. carpenter i understand your post and i do understand the cons of wimax inside buildings, hence why i said it works for me as im in a dense 4G area, so the two main places i frequent has 4G abundantly. it surely does fall off rather quickly inside structures however the results ive had are just superb, especially when its unlimited. sprints coming out with a 10gb plan this sunday and releasing new bundled plans so i should be able to get 10gb of 3G for 70 bux.
I've been using the Sprint Overdrive since last summer. Although I wouldn't recommend this particular device the 4G service itself is excellent. The Overdrive is plagued with well documented problems. When it actually connects and stays connected the service is fast and solid, as with the 4G service on my Epic. As for using WiMax 4G inside, I've found it needs to be positioned for optimal signal, I set mine on top of the refrigerator. I may eventually switch to the new MiFi unit, but I'm waiting to see how the reviewers feel about it first.
Better off rooting verizon's thunderbolt...

Consumer: "but my unlimited plan gives me the RIGHT to download 300GB/s of data each month!"
Cellular Industry: "yeah right"
Data Caps.
I would personally thank iPhone users for abusing the snot out of AT&T's unlimited data plans for all of this.

[Q] Is having HSPA+ Instead of LTE a dealbreaker?

Long story short, I'm selling my S3 (US Variant) for the Nexus 4 (my first owned nexus device). It supports HSPA+ 42mpbs (AT&T and T-Mobile here in the states) and where I live, LTE in my area is a dream and won't be coming for awhileeee. Sure the cities have LTE and all that, but 90% of the time in my general area it doesn't offer LTE. Would you, personally, sacrifice the use of LTE for the Nexus? If they are aiming to be future proof devices then do you think that they will pull off an LTE version a couple months in the year and I'm stuck with the HSPA+ version? Or do you think Google will wait until its next Nexus to have LTE.
Remember now.. I'm talking about the US VARIANT of the S3, not the quad core INTL version.

I live in Germany, so I couldn't care less for LTE on the Nexus 4.
Once Germany has LTE readily available everywhere for a reasonable price, another 2 or 3 Nexus phones will probably have hit the market.
I'm getting the Nexus 4 on day one!
An emphatic NO.
I live in an LTE enabled area but refuse to pay extortionate rates for minimal usage allowances
inside a particular zone, with the phone dropping back to 3G when 4G is unavailable.
Far easier and much less expensive for me to find a free wi-fi hotspot.
No! It's gonna be a while before my area has LTE service anyway. It's by no means a deal breaker. LTE is a huge battery drainer too.
Even though they offer LTE they don't offer unlimited data. So I would easily switch to HSPA+

I honestly use WiFi 90% of the time.
My city just launched LTE. I currently have a Samsung Note which gets 1 bar of LTE or 5 bars of HSPA+. I've disabled LTE.
LTE has been more of a pain than anything, in my case.
Why would it be a deal breaker? if your carrier supports HSPA+ 42 you get speeds close to LTE any way. I had the LG Nitro and The SG2 Skyrocket when i visited St.Louis, MO which has LTE and both phones couldn't give me the speed my HTC Amaze does which use HSPA+ 42. IMO LTE will be a joke until carriers start to support VoLTE.
Hmm of course not, t-mobile hspa+ is as fast if not faster than verizon and att LTE ( not everywhere ik) but at least in south florida my note2 and gs3 are faster than my cousins gs3 on att LTE. just my 2 cents
Why is LTE on a phone even considered necessary by some? LTE is faster than my home internet speeds. Like nearly 10 times faster. So, what do people need that speed for on a PHONE? Downloading 1080p DVD's to your 4 inch phone screen to watch? Torrenting the latest Windows 8 release to your phone? I don't get it.
I can see the use if you use your phone as a hotspot 100% of the time and have multiple devices connected to it. But, what % of the population even does this? 1%? And your capped on data anyways....so again what's the point?

I use my phone constantly for work and personal. Anything other than LTE in Pittsburgh has horrible browsing speeds. I tether my tablets through my phone. I DO have unlimited data. Everyone keeps complaining about price but LTE plans are the same price as any other plans.
That being said. I'm still not a fan of VZW and I'll probably get a Nexus 4 and try to find a month-to-month plan to test out for a while. I'm doubting I'll stick with it but who knows.
More than 97% of my data use is over wifi, and I have pretty decent HSPA+42 access averaging 11-13Mbps where I am geographically situated. I'll take longer batter life over faster mobile data speed every time.

If I was paying what people pay Verizon then I would expect the best....but I'm switching to Tmobile and gonna spend about 30 dollars a month. And i just need good data speed for occasional browsing and streaming on spotify. LTE just seems like overkill for what most of the population actually needs.
Also, can't justify spending over 3x more money for extensive Verizon LTE when its just not needed (at least for me)

The only plan I've found so far (probably the same one you're talking about) that makes me consider switching is the $30 Web Exclusive. But according to their site it seems to be a limited time thing. If I'm paying $50+ for a plan I'll just stick with my $70 VZW.

yeah that's the one im gonna start with.
also might try Slovai (sp?) for 49 a month...unlimited everything with 4GB of HSPA+ speed. plus decrease price if you get others to join
Forgot to mention, I am on AT&T's HSPA+ network, and it only supports 21Mbps
