[Q] upgrade to ICS or not? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

I have a galaxy tab p7500 surprisingly with micro sd slot when i got it has android 3.1 p7500 xxkg7 kernel 2.6.36.3 build hmj37 p7500jpkg6 so i checked update OTA and via kies but no update was available and i upgraded it with odin to P7500JPKL2_P7500OJPLB1_P7500XXKL3 as i live in pakistan so i found jpkl2 latest available for my region but it is HC 3.2 . now i am thinking to upgrade it to ICS again via odin but i have some doubts when i read about ICS there are many discussions regarding bad battery performance on ICS like battery drain issues so please advice me should i upgrade via odin to official ICS and if answer is yes then which version of official ICS as there are many available even some are released in september for australia region.is the battery drain issue fixed in latest released ICS and is it better stability wise then previously released ICS versions. Please answer my condusions.Thanx

I've tried the India version of the ICS official update and there aren't too many issues with stability compared to the sucky Honeycomb that came on it. I've also tried several CM 9, 10 and AOKP ROMs on the P7500.
Does the ICS ROM drain your battery more than the HC ROM? Yes, in my experience.
Is it worth it? Hell yeah.
In the end, the choice is yours.

I think you definitely should upgrade, the new ics is much smoother and better overall.

Yes, upgrade, but you will need to install A1 kernel and overclock so that the tab will have the necessary performance (and more) and you will not have propblems to enter the CPU in deep sleep (battery drain issue).

Some coments:
1. A1 kernel is not a modified ROM as CMx, but just a half-modified kernel which prevents bricks (emm_cap_erase), oveclocks gpu and cpu, and let you charge the tab from any USB port.
2. If you wait for a stock ics or jb rom with better performance than actual stock roms, surely you will watch before on tv the first step of the man over mars.
3. The reason why samsung or any other manufacturers don't overclock the devices is the same reason why a elevator can technically support 7.500kg weight, but the plate says max. 750kg/10 pers... ie, the tab supports higher freq, but depending of some ambiental and manufacturing conditions one tab could works lightly different than other tab on same freq (and so, same cpu voltages). Because this undervolting could affect by different way on different tabs of same model. The manufacturer finally set a nominal freq which sure them the tab will not give probelms in a determined life time (this is quality).

ok i will do as you say but which version of official ICS should i use with A1 kernel plz suggest me according to my recent Rom P7500JPKL2_P7500OJPLB1_P7500XXKL3 and also explain briefly steps to do so as i have updated my p7500 only once via odin.if i upgrade as you say then the battery life will be same as of HC 3.2?will the cameras work?also i was reading that charging via usb does not give required voltage and it takes much more time to charge the tab.

I think last oficial version for p7500 is xwlp6 in sammobile.com , you can flash it using odin and then you can flash A1 kernel to improve the performance allowing overclock.
About usb charging, you read wrong, it's nothing to do of voltage (allways 5V for usb), but with currents. Here is the explanation (see my last post):

so guys finaly i made my mind after suggestions from u and upgraded via odin to indian ICS P7500XWLP5_P7500ODDLP5_P7500XXLQ8_INU as i read that italian ICS has some bugs.what i found in ICS is it is very smooth, fast and beautiful then HC3.2.i like it very much.so far didnt use it much as i upgraded at night before sleep but i turned off wifi and left it on with battery 85% and then i checked after 7 hours and 30 min and battery dropped to 77% so it consumes 1% in 1 hour so far so u guys tell me is it ok ?(i didnt switched to aeroplane mode as i didnt find it anywhere).today again i will use it and compare battery life. Now as jaswinky suggested to flash it with kernel A1 i decided to 1st use it for sometime without kernel A1 and meanwhile read some more about the process of flashing with kernal A1 as it is little bit complicated process.

Guys should i try this method in link below to fix 1% battery drain for 1 hour or is it ok to have battery 1 % drop/hour while not using it.

All us have this aprox. 1% per hour battery drain. It is ok, it means more than 4 days on with the screen off (!!). What more you need??

Dude, punctuation, capitalization and grammar are your friends and will make your posts a lot easier to read and understand.

ok Jaswinky i checked again with aeroplane mode on and battery dropped 5% in approx 8 hours so it is less then 1% in aeroplane mode on and approx 1 % with aeroplane mode off without sim card inside so i think this indian ICS version dont have battery drain issue but the guy from link claims to have no battery drop by disabling google services framework tell me is it worth trying?

If you use autostarts to disable some google services, you probably will not be notified of some issue as gmail, calendar, etc. You should be care using autostarts. I use autostarts to completelly disable start formsome third programs and games, and also maps, facebook, google+, that's all.
If you are not happy with having the tab with more than 4 days battery with the tab on and screen off, you can try different roms and kernels.... i am happy with this battery situation.

something bad started happening last night i left tab in airplane mode on and screen off and battery dropped from 70% to 31% after approx 12 hours when i checked in day so now it consumes 3% per hour.i made sure that no program is running in backgroud wifi was off,i dont use sim mobile data off.it surprised me a lot as 1st night it consumed 1% per hour but 2nd night 3 % per hour that is too much means that if i dont put it on charge battery will drain in 1 day.plz suggest what i can do or try.
As i was reading about this problem i found some1 suggested to use cpu tuner application it is free should i give it a try?
Also some guys told to change option for background processes to off or disable to no background processes in settings -developer option if i do it will it help,do it effect the performance of tab & is it ok if i disable it only at night before sleep and again turn it on for normal usage.
some1 also suggested to turn off account & sync in settings saying this conserves the battery.do it help?i use only gmail account for google play store

Probably your tab is not entering in deep sleep. You should check it with setcpu or system tuner or similar app to discard it is your problem. If you are entering in deep sleep, check battery uses to see the wake up frequency and the top battery draining apps.

1- Nope, CPU SPY is not respnsible.
2- You don't need to root to run better battery stats.
3- You will probably find out that the responsible is a l2_hsic wakelock. You will have to go to settings, more, kernel wakelocks.

No app will solve your problem except a right kernel. You must solve asap your no deep sleep state entering issue, and usually it is because the kernel. Try a different kernel as A1 kernel (you have ICS right?), you need to root before, and try both min freq 150 and 216 (i use 150 but some people reported that they need to set to 216 min freq to enter deep sleep).
EDIT: before flashing a different kernel, try to clean the installed kernel by doing wipe cache partition and wipe dalvik cache (from CWM Recovery in rooted device). Some times it works to solve the deep sleep issue.

Samusng Galaxy S2 horrible battery.

Hey guys, I recently got a Samsung Galaxy S2 (over 2 months ago)
At first it was really good with battery life, lasting over a day with medium use.
It started to get really bad, draining down from 100% to 50~ over night with no use at all.
I searched the problem and came across these forums, which said 2.3.3 was a problem sometimes.
Now this is also my first android phone, so I'm not sure exactly how to do all the tinkering around with it. Long story short, I found that changing to 2.3.4 helped a lot. It did, for 2 days, now I'm getting the same problem again. Maybe I didn't do it right? Need help! (also this forum is huge, not sure if I'm in the right spot)
Have you tried flashing a custom ROM and kernel? Pick out a ROM that you like and then install a nice kernel like Speedmod. Lite'Ning ROM v6.1 and Speedmod T39 together really increased my battery life.
Is there like a "how to" section on this site somewhere?
As I said, this is my first Android phone, so I'm a little lost as to how it all works

Thanks for the help guys.
I "think" I rooted my phone and got a version of 2.3.5, which is also supposed to be better on the battery?

Or also get titanium backup, and freeze all the useless crap on the phone that you dont use. I did that and it went from 7% every hour (despite the fact that there were no wakelocks) down to 0.5% every hour
EDIT- on standby/very little use, that is.
Also after you flash charge your battery to 100percent and calibrate your battery there is a good free app in the market

Well if you're using its smart phone capabilities it will really drain quickly. Specially when on data. What I did was to get an extra variety and an external battery charger-best investment for this phone ever.

You can also see what drained your battery by going into battery usage: Menu - settings - about phone - battery usage. or create the shortcut on your desktop.
download betterbatterystats to check what processes are burning your battery and stuff. helped me a lot, this app.
Given that you are getting decent performance for a bit, which then drops off, I'd say it was far less likely that the cause was the hardware or the ROM and far more likely that it is something you are doing with the configuration or software.
Try removing any widgets you have added - does that improve battery life? If so, add them back one at a time until you find the culprit. Also, make sure you are not signed into stuff like Latitude - that is an absolute battery killer.
You have seen that you can get decent life from the battery, now you just need to work out what affects that.
It was the 2.3.4 OS draining the battery. I wouldn't touch my phone, and in 8 hours it went from 100% to 20%, with the status saying Android OS 100% in battery usage.
Now I'm on 2.3.5, battery is at 95% after 4 hours.
I'll give it a few days, and see exactly how it goes and if there is a substantial difference in battery life in relation to use.
I almost had the same problem with the battery but i flashed omega rom and so far i have no problems! I always have wifi on when i am at home and 3g when i am not at home and the phone can run up to 2 days!
Have you tried doing a basic search and looking at one of the 100's of other threads crapping on about battery life?
<deleted> sorry
galaxy s2 i9100 Battery Problem!
I am using Samsung Galaxy s2 for a while and I am facing an extremely low Battery Back up. Around 9-10 hrs to the max. I got the battery changed from the Samsung service center and have tried changing alot of different firmwares.
KE4 -> KE7 -> KF3 -> KH3 -> KI3 -> Simple and clean 1.2 KI4.
Nothing works.
I am attaching my "Battery Usage" images along. Please find a solution for me. Thank you.
Calibrate your battery, but you must have root access. When you have root than load the calibrate app.
i am quite heavy users on my sgs2 at first i had battery problem lasting only 5 - 7 hours... i got juice defenders free version from market and well it didnt boost my battery life to 48+ but it did made me last 1 and half day
New battery stats!!
Alright I experimented with the battery to check whether there is a problem with my battery or my firmware/kernel.
I tried the same battery on 2 different Galaxy s2. Battery stats below :
DEVICE 1:
Firmware : Stock KF3 Rooted
Kernel : Stock KF3
Battery Usage : 14hrs
Display : 45mins
Voice Calls : 1hr50mins
Battery remaining: 50%
DEVICE 2:
Firmware : Simple & Clean v1.2
Kernel : SpeedMod k2-18 test3
Battery Usage : 12hrs
Display : 45mins
Voice Calls : 2hrs
Battery remaining: 19%
Now in the above case I have used the same 1650maH battery in 2 different handsets. So why so much difference in battery life on an almost similar usage when I also made sure that the Brightness levels of both the phones also remain same.
Please help me out on this.

Extremely high Android OS use

When I first got my note, the Android OS was listing about 50% usage in the battery consumption. in the last two weeks I have seen that spike from 50% to 70% then 80% and now today almost 91%
I have many of the apps I never use frozen with Titanium and I am very diligent in killing anything that remains when not in use.
The phone is rooted but I have yet to go to a new kernel or new rom. KK1 is my current Kernel and I am on 2.6.35.7
any ideas
Do you mind trying to disable auto sync under Settings/Accounts and Sync? If that doesn't help try do disable background sync too. I suspect the problem lies there.

If you don't charge the phone and then the first think you do is to play a game or a movie then this is normal. I charged my yesterday 100% I did unplugged it and did go to bed at morning, 6 hours later, battery was at 80-85% with wifi on. I did go to work with the bus 1 hour way exact and was watching Dr.house s1e04 after that 10 min of music on speakers and I check battery the os had 71% with 9+ hours out of charger.

not sure what that has to do with Android os usage being so hi. I have turned off sync, makes no difference. Pegged at 91%
I had the same problem in the first firmware. After flashing this kernel the problem has gone.
thank you. I assume if I have CF and rooted, I can simply drop that 1.4 file into drop box and use CWM to flash safely?

Hi there,
Firstly, I would ensure we rule out a hardware issue by flashing a completely stock firmware using ODIN. It would be best if you remove your external SD card, and backup all your data on your internal memory and then wipe as much as you can as well. After flashing a stock firmware, see if there is a battery drain still, and if so you will at least have more evidence to suggest there is a hardware issue.
CPU Spy is an excellent app for discovering issues whereby the CPU is being utilised too much - additionally, System Panel is also excellent. However, again neither of these will be able to determine if there is a hardware issue of some sort, only excessive CPU usage.
WRT EFS backup, my preferred method it to use Root Explorer and create an archive whilst in the EFS directory. It will put the archive on your SD card - and it takes no time at all.
Some of the apps I mentioned will be charged for I guess, but not very much.
If you need more details, let me know.
:-( my battery was perfect. I installed onecosmic and it was fine battery was normal after few days my battery started draining fast 1% every 3 minutes and I flashed Miui mintberry rom and still problem exist. Even wifi off and background data off and edge too it drains 1% 3-5 minutes while screen is off or deep sleep it drain 1% evey hour

What should I do :-( plx help

ok.
You need to examine this problem to narrow down the cause. You will have to invest some time and possibly a little money to achieve that! If all else fails, you can of course buy a new battery - but it's best to work out where the drain is coming from.
Have you checked the battery log in Android settings?
Also consider installing OS Monitor, it is free and allows you to look at what processes are running.

It's important to get the right tool for the job here and the apps you are using aren't detailed enough unfortunately.
System Panel will inspect android system apps to check where CPU usage is and log it making it very easy to determine what is happneing.
BetterbatteryStats will allow you to check on the WakeLocks which are a big cause of battery drain when the screen is off.
I use them both - but must say I haven't see such fast battery drain as yours.
Throughout this process, I suggest you stick to a ROM as close to stock as possible but prefereably with CWM.

If you need help turning on the "monitor" mode of system panel let me know. Otherwise just turn it on and then use your phone normally for a while (i.e. allow time for it to be left with screen off as well) after that stats will be collected to show how the CPU has been used over that time.
Also check CPU Spy and make sure that the CPU isn't "stuck" in 1000Mhz

battery is even worse after ICS

I had sticked with GB from day 1. Only a minor OTA update to 2.3.6. Four days ago I saw that there were a new ICS update for my French GNote. I said "what the hell!" and done with the update. Now I am getting 7-8 hours instead of 12-13 hours, and the phone is getting warmer now.
same old story.
ics gives more performance, but drains more battery.
I improve my situation with a change of kernel (speedmod)
There is a deep sleep issue well documented on ICS 4.0.3 for Note. If you install cpu spy you can see that when the screen is off your device is still running at 200MHz thus eating up the battery.
I've had my phone go dead after 3.5 hrs of use. Hopefully 4.0.4. resolves this issue
The poster who said that ICS just eats up more battery is wrong. There is a legitimate bug preventing the phone from deep sleep.
There is a trick where you can enable airplane mode, power device off, pull battery, insert battery back in, power on device and the deep sleep bug is gone, that is until you charge your phone again.
Hope this helps there are many threads about this.
If you are comfortable, flash a custom kernel or ROM. Also, get BetterBatteryStats and look for wakelocks.
I found ICS does drain more battery - though on my Note it wasn't anywhere near drastic as yours, maybe 5-10% more. I never ran into a deep sleep issue on 4.0.3 myself.
As for phone getting warmer, check to make sure you don't have an application running that is using a lot of CPU time. I found that for me, an older version of the Facebook app would occasionally get "stuck" and really use up the CPU, making the phone very warm - and running battery down.
As King Meda mentioned, a new kernel can make a big difference. After switching to the Speedmod kernel, I'm getting much better battery life, a few extra hours a day in my case.
Yes ICS gives smoother interface at the cost of battery life. I do not mean deep sleep bug. Even without that bug, ICS in general consumes 10 to 20% more battery when screen is on.

its my experience, my friend. I got no problem of deep sleep and I tried several kernels.
a lot of user in the italian forum represented the same problem.

4.0.3 certainly had worse battery life, as I couldn't even get my device to enter "deep sleep". But, personally, 4.0.4 lasts me through the day - if not a bit longer - and I am happy.

With 4.0.4 I'm more or less back where I was with GB, 1,5-2,5% drain per hour under normal use.
4.0.3 was a horror story for me due to the deep sleep (l2_hsic wake lock) problem.

Agree !!!
But 4.0.4 is good. Smooth, and stable.
I've no idea about the stockROM 4.0.4. I use customROM for 4.0.4, and it really suit my needs and my device.
Battery drains, normally due to :
*) application running in background, which requires high resources of CPU.
*) device doesn't go to proper deep sleep, when you are not using it, due to those background application, and due to some tweaks on the use kernel.
Because of the application in background, and can't go to deep sleep, you will feel that your device is heaty, and sometimes is very hot.
Once your device go hot, normally the battery will drain faster.
When this is happen, means it is time for you to check which application make your device do exercise too muach, or means it is time for you to re-flash your device.
So far, I never use stockROM at all for my device, and never use stock kernel as well. So the stock performance, is beyond my imagination.
So, peare, for your reference, you may try "speedmod" or "notecore" for your kernel. These 2 kernels have been reported as a safe kernel for ICS, and also reported as a good ICS kernel to maintain battery usage, so it won't drain so fast.
as for ROM, you may choose yourself. you can browse around at N7000 Android development, and find the ROM that you like.
You can also try the ROM I'm using now = CriskeloROM.
This ROM is very good to my device. I combine it with speedmod. So far so good.
No heaty device, and no lagging, very smooth, and battery last well (around 20+ hours).

Try using speed mod kernel. Your battery life will be like 16-18hrs. I had same issue with ICS but am happy now.

LR 6 is not android 5. It is ics 4.04.

I'm assuming this is the stock ROM with a potential eMMC bug the OP is talking about? I am using CM9 stable and deep sleep has no issues.
But I do feel Galaxy Note was more stable with a GB ROM and I used a slimrom called CassiesXtraLite.

[Q] android os battery drain

I have i9500 cm11 ROM nightly. Version 20140105 and it drains battery. 43% is android os. 7 hours and 5 hours I didn't use the phone. What should I do?
When I had issues, I installed GSAM battery monitor and got more details. Shows when it was using more data, was awake, was using phone signal or wifi, battery temperatures..... For me it was some media files that were not processing well, so I had to drop in some .nomedia files.
Try to download Wakelock Detector from the Play Store and see the root that causes it. For example, the last time with stock rom, I have issues with Google Play Services with NIPcollector issues that keep on waking the phone without letting it to fall into deep sleep causing a huge battery drain. The solutions, Wakelock terminator, can be download in Play Store aswell. The free version of wakelock terminator only let you terminate 1 services which is just enough for my case. If you have more than one services causing lots of wakelock, consider getting the donate version.
Do use Greenify to hibernate unused apps aswell, it does really helps. :good:
if u are looking for low battery drain then stay away from custom roms especially cm based roms.
not only they drain the battery fast because they are badly ported or whatever but also they are missing samsungs energy saver mode which does save alot of battery. (only enable cpu and u will never notice its on)
so if u really want to use a custom rom then atleast get a tw rom.
my best experience for best battery on my s2, s4 and note 3 is original stock rom with bloatware removed, energy saver mode on (cpu only) and xposed+xblast module.
that way i got best battery on my s4 (almost 6 hours on screen time or 3 days standby time), all tw features and all features i want from a custom rom.
also on every android phone in my house i had a battery drain while having wlan on in standby mode.
i noticed this not when having the screen on... only like at night when the screen was off.
this took me about 1 day standby time... so ihad only 2 days standby and not like now 3 days.
lost like 10-15% every night while doing nothing. now its 1-2% every night.
this wasn't the fault of any apps installed or anything else. only thing which help me with this was buying a new router.
after researching which one would help me with this problem i decided to buy this one. cheap and also very good and alot of settings.
http://www.amazon.de/Edimax-BR-6228nS-Wireless-LAN-Access-Points/dp/B004XIE2T0
other then that NEVER use geenify or any other battery tools. they will not help at all...
only app that could help is betterbatterystats.

I'm glad you are speaking only from your own experience, because many people have had different experiences. I get as good as or better battery life with CM11 over TW on my i9500. Many others have said the same.
BTW, CM for the S4 is not a "port."

1) Download a newer nightly. Lots of progress has been made on CM11 in 4 months.
2) Backup your data, do full wipes and a clean install.

cmon man. it's ok if u like cm and all. thats ur thing.
but don't say u got same as good battery like on tw rom... then u ain't know what u talking about.
if u say something like that its clearly that u never had a good running system and probably cm on ur phone since u bought it.
but i agree he could solve that high android os drain due a fresh clean new install/full wipe (probably even with the same version he has on the phone right now)
battery would be still alot worse then on tw roms with stock kernel
Check this. If it is the same issue, it doesn't depend on the ROM, but on the carrier.

thanks for helping guys. I have found out that the music player doesn't give the phone to fall into deep. i want to move to be not system app and to put it on hibernate. how can i check if the app "/system /app mover" works on rom cm11 ? cant it break my phone?
thanks
Clicking the battery in settings will give some information.
I had the problem in past week (i9505 S4 running stock 4.3), where Google Play Store inexplicably was unable to connect to the server. As a result, it kept trying to connect and fail repeatedly, and draining battery severely. Tried all the fixes to reconnect Play Store with server to no avail. Ended up doing a hard reset, and this fixed it. Battery consumption now back to normal.
