I AM A NOOB..and im proud of it.. I become less NOOBish everytime im on this site and learn, so i pose this question as a Noob thats needs to learn..I would like to format my virtual sd card on my nexus 7 to clean it out, basically to start over ..after doing lots of tinkering on it from this site..how would i go about doing it?..should i use the wug tool redo everything from scatch root unlock and new rom..or is there a way just to erase the sd..i just want to take precaution..thanks KUCZMAD
I would recommend using clockworkmod recovery for this
Backup any contents you want to save
Boot to Cwm recovery
Choose mounts
Press format /sdcard
Easy as

or with TWRP.more choice
I've wondered if this is beneficial. On my N7 and gnex I've factory wiped and installed ROMs many times and installed/deleted dozens of apps. I can't shake the feeling that completely wiping everything might help clean up and might even result in a minor speed and/or battery improvement.
Any of the experts able to weigh in on this?

What is the secret of stability folks? i was a veteran at making mistakes when flashing roms...(i failed day 1 of owning my DSstreak5...sat seemingly dead for a week before i got things going)
Anyway my post is looking for some post detailing what works. And that means those veterans that appear to be able to go further than 48hrs without a hitch. Is it about how much gets wiped i constantly wipe dv and perform both resets. and still boot to problems.
I have mastered Baseband changes and such one of my crucial first issues (currently 366bb via dsc flashme3).
but as of late I am having problems getting reliable operation out of the box on a few roms..dsc and longhorn.
Dsc has been fairly usable...My bread and butter or must have apps are lastfm and somafm.. i must have these functional but ity appears these may be causing issues...they freeze and fc off and on.
Longhorn seems to want to throw process errors right from the start...with 2.9.1 it constantly froze at boot...(is it truely 366 compatible)
anyway thats my rant for now please post your views and tips...while i attempt to try lxdroid...wish me luck!!!
ps does loading/transferring files in ubuntu linux vs windows make any difference in the stability of files or the sd?

You may wanna try an app called SD maid... it looks for unused directories and files and THOROUGHLY will clean up your system
Are you doing factory resets from both StreakMod and Dell recoveries?
When you flash ROM you should flash ROM and do a factory reset... then boot back into recovery, wipe cache and dalvik, flash ROM again, then fix permissions from recovery before booting
Also... every once in a while I like to completely wipe my SD card with diskpart using the clean all command and then let the Streak format it. Once booted and SD formatted, I mount in recovery and copy files back to the SD using the robocopy commands from Windows
I can honestly say that apart from the occasional wifi freeze or hangup I have zero problems with apps on my Streak
Mind you I don't install apps just for the sake of having it or because it was cheap on sale... I run what I need to get done what I need.... I don't use task killers but I do use Autorun Manager to prevent apps from starting and Autokiller Memory Optimizer to help out with memory
Nor do I ever have apps installed to my SD cars
Hope some of that helps

I am going to start easing up on the moving to sd ...things do become a little iffy when i move programs over
Wiping the sd card deserves a fresh look...I do recall once long ago wiping or swaping the sd and getting better results initially.
Maybe some mild corruption is occuring during some file transfers?
I wonder if anyone has noticed more or less issues transfering via the usp vs pulling the sd completely and using a sd adapter/slot?

The streakmod data/factory reset followed by the dell reset is a true staple in my flashing diet...
i have on occassion tried the double flash as well...but just to clarify you are recommending :
1...access Recovery .....streakmod(my recovery of habit) or clockworkmod(not sure of use on the streak5 havent used since gingerstreak)
2...flash ROM "X"
3...do a factory reset........ "dell" or "streakmod" or "both" (i have done a reboot rather than any resets between the second flash)
4...access Recovery
5...wipe cache
6...wipe dalvik cache
7...flash ROM "X" again
8...fix permissions
9...reboot
I will try to add the double flash more as a matter of design than troubleshoot option in future
Hi I just got my nexus 7 its my first android device so I know jack about it so its gonna be a learning curve but I do like leaning so it should be fun. The question is what are the different kernels for and does this effect performance?

Kernels are basically the behind the scenes workers. They provide you with performance and battery tweaks. And there no "perfect" kernel lol, its all in personal preference.
Kernels are what communicate the hardware with the OS, they control drivers,CPU's,GPU, etc etc. Since your very new i would suggest staying on the stock train for now, until you can fully grasp what everything is doing and will do. The least i would suggest to do right now is to unlock the boot loader, load a custom recovery, and flash a superuser package(this will root the device). If you can get that done (all manually stay away from toolkits), then you can move onto flashing custom roms. Remember that when moving from one ROM to another you need to wipe the device (this doesnt include the sd card contents such as your downloads, however does include apps). I would suggest this procedure
1. Wipe data
2. Wipe Cache partition
3. Go into mounts and storage, Format /System
4. Wipe Dalvik Cache
5. Flash ROM.zip and Gapps.
6. Reboot
This process will need to be followed when switching ROMs however just updating will need just steps 2 and 4-6.
I know lot of info in one post but i feel this will help you out later. If something confuses you "SPEAK UP", not in all caps but let somebody know, if you're unsure about if something has already been asked used the search feature loacted at the top right of every thread and search keywords. If you turn up no results, mention you searched, and ask the question.
Anything else?
Oh yeah have fun! Its all a learning experience.
Thanks, indeed its a leaning curve but one that I'll try. I'm gonna follow your advice and learn as much as I can before I start messing. So adb first I think, then boot loaders, then ROMs. If you can point me to a good beginners guide that would be a good place because its easy to become overwhelmed. Thanks.

I’m new to this forum and to the Android world, so please bear with me.
I have just purchased the Samsung Galaxy Tab2 10.1 GT-P5113, and the 1st thing I did was to root the device.
I have since been searching for the perfect ROM in order to get both smoothness/performance and the ability to over clock up to 1400. I have tried a couple of ROM’s and flashing ROM’s became pretty straight forward for me, but I was just not happy with the ones I have tried and the only over clocking one only allowed me overclock up to 1200.
Now I just restored it back to factory settings, but I now have an issue…
The available space on the internal sdcard is less than 500Mb!!!! I followed all the procedures of wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik. And still, something is getting stored on the sdcard and I’m not sure what or where that is.
I also have the issue, that I’m not able to update the OS, but that I would guess it’s because, and correct me if I’m wrong.. the devise is Rooted..
So all in all, those are my issues and I would like to get them fixed. Any help would be gladly appreciated.
1- The sdcard space causes me headaches and I don’t know how to resolve it.
2- What ROM would you suggest based on what you read
3- Why can’t I update?
1-Their is option in cwm to format emmc use with extreme caution
2- use aokp or cm10 from www.teamhacksung.org and it has update feature inside it

I just bought a Nexus 4 last night and installed CM 10 on it. I have a question about this since it doesn't have an SD card. I came from flashing ROMs on my Doubleshot for a couple of years. Whenever I do the wipe drill in CWM, everything that is on the SD card is still there on the new ROM.
Yesterday, when I rooted the Nexus and installed CM, I guess I took for granted the same would happen. Normally, I don't care, but I had a sweet picture of my cat that I wanted to keep and forgot about it. I guess I learned my lesson, but assuming I go to flash another ROM in the future, do I need to make sure to back up this virtual SD card and will it always get wiped in the process? Or was this a byproduct of the rooting procedure. I knew I should have uploaded it to Facebook or something. I just wasn't thinking about it.
I guess that was because I unlocked the boot loader. Dang
Either you unlocked your bootloader then installed the ROM(unlocking wipes everything) or in recovery you wiped /data instead of doing a factory reset

The storage is unified on this device so you have to be careful what you wipe. Best bet is to get dropbox and let it sync photos as you take them that way you will never lose them. Also invest in a good backup program, I prefer Koush's carbon backup, so that you can sync your data for your apps.

Hi, yes, i believe I did format /data as well as a factory reset. I cannot remember exactly how. I do know that on the Doubleshot, they made a point to suggest formatting /system, /data and /cache. Is all that not necessary for a clean wipe between different roms?
Also, that backup app that was linked looks nice, but I already use Titanium pro. Does this one have any advantage?

Just use factory reset option and your SD card contents will be fine.

Hi folks,
I have just flashed stock boot.img 4.4.2. and now I see that my internal storage shrunk from 28gb to 6 gb max..
So, where are my 22gb?
Edit: Help.. I just cant get it back.. In the screenshot it says: 6gb available out of 29gb.. with a full wipe and clean install!
Please, help! I have tried wugs toolkit, but flashing stock and going back to all normal doesn't work, because it always fails..

I must admit, I didnt flashed it like always, but everything looked fine because it booted..
I know this has something to do with partitions, but I dont have knowledge about that. I used a wipescript.
Cheers,

I thought I read somewhere, I could be wrong, that after a stock flash you need to do a factory reset within the device to really be a "stock" flash...
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
Never heard of that step?.. Can somebody confirm this is needed to get the normal internal storage?
I have a 32gb model, and at 'storage' there was always a total of 28+gb . Now I know you loose some gb due to the fact it is needed for android to run. But I cant believe my internal storage really shrunk from 28+ to 6gb.
Is it reversable?
Yea its reversible your nexus thinks its the 8 GB version try factory reset , wipe cache and wipe dalvic cache and if the all fails reflash the ROM basicly you need to get your nexus to reevaluate its storage

Sounds logical.. Thnx will try that!
See op for edit.. Please help, somebody..
OK try this one make sure you wipe everything (not the bootloader) as per the instructions http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1907796

Programming is a race between engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning.
hehe, i appreciate the help!
but I manage to fix it..
I was lucky I had a really old version of Wugs toolkit on my laptop.. Happy I did not remove that one. Because going back to stock worked really good on that version.
Now I installed stock by flashing boot, system, etc one by one and it all worked out well.
finally problem solved
