I'm looking to upgrade my phone to a custom ROM, but I'm not sure which one is the best for my needs. This is what I am looking for:
Fyro Update
Increased Phone Speed
Increased Battery Support
Adblock for browser and apps
Also, how do I flash my ROM? I have the drivers to connect my phone to my computer, and that's about as far as I got. Secondly, will I lose my apps and their data? I already have my contacts and SMS backed up.
Thanks guys
jt
As a shameless plug - I whole-heartedly recommend SyndicateROM. It'll fulfill three of your four features already (including ad blocking in apps and the browser), and when the OFFICIAL, FINAL (ACS prides itself on stability and feature-completeness) Froyo release is out, it will be updated right away!
That's actually the one I was looking at. Is there instructions on how to flash your ROM? Will I lose my apps and their data?
After rooting you'll need Clockwork Recovery mod(CWM). Look for a Dev who has created a root with a CWM install (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=770388).
1. Follow steps to root and install CWM.
2. Download a ROM and put it on your SDcard (Start with ones that have been around for a while and have been tested quite a bit. Avoid Froyo ones till you feel comfortable with CWM and Odin {if you ever use it}).
3. Reboot into CWM, BACKUP everything (this is key for your data to come back), wipe x3 (including cache)
4. Install ROM from SDcard(reboot, may take a few minutes to load for the first time)
5. Reboot into CWM, and advance restore (DATA only). reboot
6. Enjoy with all your data.
Hope this helps
Epic Experience + Phoenix is the best battery life I've had on any ROM.
Performance feels like stock, which is to say, this phone is really fast just as is and I don't think its screaming for better performance out of the box. Its not like it feels sluggish like the Evo does.
All these devs do great work! You can't go wrong with any of these roms. This belongs in the General Discussions section!

Hoping you can help me a little further;
1) Done successfully

3) How do I boot into CWM? I installed Titanium back up, and ROM manager - not sure if that's needed or not
Thanks guys
PS, sorry for posting in the wrong section

camera button, down volume and power on.
I suggest you try them all and figure out what you like or don't like. Also try out the ODIN program so when you accidentally bork your phone you will know how to fix it right away.
Got it. I assume this is backing up to my SD card. Do I not wipe my SD card?
Thanks, this should be the last question!

The only way you will wipe your SD card is if you partition it for A2SD support. The factory reset wipes all your data and might be a good idea if you are going from one rom/kernel to another. CWM backs up to your SD card. I have about 6 backups and can restore several different roms if I want. If you try all the roms out and make backups of all them it will be easy to go back to what you want.
A program called ROM Manager will make it easy to rename your backups.
i started noticing that after i flashed a new rom, alot of my settings are set to the way i had them before. and some apps are already installed that would otherwise need a marketplace install..
keep in mind, i always do a wipe of cache/dalvik/sdcard
i think it started happening after i partitioned the sd card for those old sense roms that needed extra space.. cant remember..
but it seems like theres a portion of rom that isnt being wiped and all my settings are being carried over to the next rom flash..
how can i fully wipe my phone or get it back to normal?
this is weird, and i want it to stop. any ideas?
i just flashed back to amonra

Are you using ROMs that have Google back up enabled?
Also, if the zip isn't set to wipe /data and you're not wiping it then you'll still have all of your data.
That has happened to me too. Are you wiping sdext and android.secure in recovery. I always wipe those and haven't had that happen since I started doing that.
We're comin from a pure power source.
naw i turn off all that google backup stuff.
thats the thing, when i try to wipe sdext it gives me an error (from the last i remember doing it)
Hmmm. Latest version of amon ra?

You should be wiping data as well when flashing new roms.
I flash vrsuperwipe everytime I flash, but I use Google backup, so when I flash a new sense ROM it saves a lot of my settings, and my SD-ext apps automatically appear. Good feature imo.

still wondering about other options before testing some new roms
same thing happened to me so I tried repairing sdext and then re-partitioned my card and left it ext2 instead of ext3,wipe data/cache/dalvik cache/system flash superwipe, then flashed rom. don't know which one worked but it stopped. Also I noticed it mainly happens when I flash 3.0 roms but it has happened on CM7 to

You did not wipe data. If you do this you will preserve all of you apps (if they were not on card), data and system settings. This may work for you if the new ROM that you are moving to is similar enough. It can cause big problems if the structure of the ROMs is too different. You can end up with a phone that lags and has wakelocks (at best) or is not functional at all due force closes all over the place.
You should really wipe data as well before flashing a ROM and then do a selective restore of data on the new ROM.
@ mods i realised my mistake in posting this in the wrong section and posted in the right one but people are replying to this one......so please dont delete this just yet
I in my infinite wisdom tried to mod a file on my phone. I did a titanium backup 1st but forgot to move it to my external SD Doh!
So that went wrong and now I'm stuck in a boot loop with only the stock recovery screen. Need to install stock rom and adb not recognized. (Im sure ill figure that) but my main question is, is there some way to recover data from the internal "sd" memory?
I really appreciate any advice anyone can give
I am not sure if I understood your question.. if you have CWM then just access recovery mode and you will have an option to mount the SD and you will be able to access all your files via USB from your PC
?
I don't have cwm . Like I said I only have the stock recovery screens I.e factory reset and download mode.
Do a factory reset, it won't erase your data.
Not sure that would work. It says wipe user data and factory reset so surely it would wipe my data. Plus I don't think that'll work anyway as I changed a file which caused the boot loop so I don't think a factory reset will fix that file.

what info are you trying to get off the device? the sms etc are stored on your data and will be wiped by a reinstall/factory reset
anything on the usb side for storage will not get touched
Factory reset wont clear anything on the internal_sd
thank you.....but
thanks for the replies peeps ill trust your knowledge (and have pressed the thanks button )
got a day off tomorrow so gonna try and get it up and running again,
Question though, being as i buggered up the stock rom wont flashing the new rom (when i figure out how) delete internal data either.
the reason im being carefull is i did some awesome illustrations (imo) for a childrens book im writing so hoping to save those.

it depends on if you use a wipe or non wipe rom, a non wipe wil lkeep qall the data stored on the android system intact but you might get bootloops if it doesnt replace the file you say you deleted
took the plunge......alls good

Thanks Richy99, i took the plunge and followed nasgilani's guide to installing stock rom, i was supprised when it completed that even my home screens etc were as they were before (appart from widgets being blank) and glad to see "as you all said" my data intact.
i shall be more cautious before i start messing with mods next time
basically internal usb storage of 11gb will never be touched when you factory reset nor wil lanything on an external sd card
the only thing that gets wiped is the 1gb internal space for the rom and data on that partition such as sms/email etc
I know this is an old topic but I noticed it wasn't exactly answered.. I'm trying to send mine back to the factory for warranty because the power button no longer functions. I have the stock rom and recovery and I'm stuck in boot loop because I can't execute factory wipe with the power button. I'd like to pull my data off of the internal SD but am unable to fix the bootloop without forcing the wipe.
I know metter is over now, it was just ur worrying, otherwise wiping cache, wiping data from recovery , flashing stock rom (wipe/non wipe) nothing.will erase data on internal memory.
Just for knowledge
aroma file manager is available, which works from recovery, it can work even you device stucked, unable to boot..
Edit ; sometime you feel ashamed, just come to know this is 6month old topic

I've been flashing eyballer's OpenGL nightlies (to emmc) for the past few weeks with no problems. However, 20120307 is the last one that successfully flashes for me.
EDIT: I just tried 20120308 and it does flash successfully. Will try 0309 to see if it works now...
EDIT2: Nope, flashing 0309 or 0310 after a successful 0308 flash and test still doesn't work. Everything below still applies. Feck!
0309 and 0310 (I skipped 0308) both produce the following results.
Download the ROM
Verify checksum
Replace services.jar with mateorod's updated services.jar (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1508481)
Copy the ROM over to my SD card using TerraCopy which runs a CRC check on the copied file afterward
Reboot into CWM
Wipe cache and davlik cache
Install ROM
Install bootanimation fix zip
Install latest GApps from goo-inside (0304 checksum verified)
Install telephony fix
Reboot
Boot animation starts and runs for maybe 2 minutes
Everything is good to this point, just like it has been for weeks.
Once the animation stops I get the Android is upgrading... message BUT rather than it showing progress of each app updates (x of xxx) it simply says OK and has the spinning wheel. After about 30 seconds OK changes to Wait.
A few seconds later message pops up that says
Text actions
Low on space
Clear default in Home Settings > Applications > Manage applications <-- this is a button I can click which simply closes the message.
I click the message so that it closes and I have a the CM9 lock screen or to the home screen once I've unlocked. Either way I can't determine what it is that it's asking me to clear really...
That same low space message keeps popping up. The menubar and soft buttons do not load, but the App drawer button and search bar are preset at the top. I can open the App drawer and launch various apps that way. All while having the low space message pop up every 10 or 15 seconds OR immediately if I run an app that attempts to look at storage.
EDIT3: It appears that the SD card isn't mounting whenever I'm attempting to run 0309 or 0310. Yet it DOES mount with any nightlie earlier than 0308 as well as stock 1.4.1. It mounts in recovery too. What changed in 0309 going forward??
So here are the things I've tried.
Restored nandroid backup of 20120307. Works just like it always has.
Completely wiped and installed 20120307 fresh, along with 0304 Gapps, bootanimation fix, telephony fix, etc. Worked like a charm.
Repartitioned emmc; trying 5Gb data and 1GB data both to see if that might have an impact on 0309 installing properly. Nope!
I've tried repairing permissions after a 0309 install
I've verified that yes, there IS enough space on internal storage (~450MB of 5GB used)
I've installed 0309 and 0310 without replacing the new services.jar file
I've installed 0309 and 0310 only - no other zips such as GApps, bootanimation fix, etc.
I've booted without my SD card inserted to eliminate it as a potential cause
Completely wiped the Nook and reloaded stock 1.4.1, re-rooted it, flashed CWM and attempted 0309 and 0310. No effin' luck!
I simply can not get any of the new OpenGL builds to flash properly, yet others here are able to and no one else has reported the problem I've been having. The best I can do is to restore 0307 from nandroid backup or to install 0307 fresh.
Anyone have any idea what's going on and/or what I can try next?

It sounds to me like it is asking you to clear the defaults on a specific app, hence telling you to go to applications. I would suspect SystemUI since it is the one crashing. That's why you have no soft buttons. If you can do it look at that app in the settings and see if there is data or defaults that can be cleared.

Thanks for the suggestion. As it stands right now when I go into Apps and attempt to view All, it reboots (to the boot animation, not the boot loader); sometimes before displaying any apps, sometimes after it's loaded the list. In either case any time I attempt to click on anything once I'm viewing Apps, I get a reboot.

I can't tell from your first post. Did you try installing fresh after wiping data? It sounds like something got borked there. I know you lose all settings, but it may be your only solution.

Yes, I've wiped data more times than I can count in the past 2.5 days.
I even went to the extreme of repartitioning my emmc storage - went from 1GB data to 5GB data. Obviously you have to format after repartitioning. I've also restored stock and then re-rooted and flashed everything fresh. This NC has been completely flattened and rebuilt.

Restore a nandoid backup prior to flashing 0309 or 0310? If that's what you're asking, then yes. I've done that multiple times. I can restore my 0307 backup and it runs perfectly. I can wipe data/cache and attempt a fresh install of 0309 or 0310 and it isn't mounting my SD card. My SD card mounts fine with previous CM9 builds, current Mirage 7.2 builds and stock, not-rooted.
I guess the next step is to reformat the SD card.

No, I meant flashing 3/10 right after wiping /data, but my guess is that you tried that. Is mounting the SD the only issue after installing fresh? No systemui crashing?

Yes, I've attempted to flash 0309 fresh after a complete wipe without first restoring a backup and also immediately after coming from 100% stock.
The SD card, which appears to function as it ought to with every other build or ROM, is the only thing I haven't yet worked with. It just doesn't make sense that new builds can't mount it unless something changed in those builds. Then again, no one else is seeing this.
EDIT: Beyond the No space pop-up message that keeps spamming me in 0309 and 0310, there's no messages about crashing at all.

Try 3/10 fresh (w/o the modded services.jar, it is broken on 3/10). It has been significantly updated. Many things changed.
Sorry. I meant to state that I've done both fresh. Yesterday I simply thought that the problem was with the 0309 build. I spent hours working different flashing scenarios. Installed over 0307/fresh/repartioned/restored-to-stock/with services.jar and without it/with GApps and without. I finally gave up and hoped that 0310 would fix whatever was apparently broken with 0309.
I've tried all of the same today with 0310. Just got through creating a backup image of my SD card and am about to flatten it and see if that helps.

Yeah, I read about the services/jar issue and stopped using that both with the 0309 build yesterday and with the 0310 build today.
Well screw me. Wiping data/cache and installing 0310 without anything else - no GApps, not bootanimationfix, nothing - along with a freshly formatted SD card and it still will not flash properly.
I'm so done with nightlies for a while. Back to Mirage.
Thanks for the help, leapinlar.

I'm not sure what you mean "flash properly". You mean it will not install the nightly to emmc?
Meaning that the ROM doesn't run properly as stated in my OP. It does flash successfully... Sorry for the confusion.

I JUST installed the 0310 KANG nightly with OpenGL, and it booted up fine, albeit I had to flash it totally unmodded and with EVERYTHING except /boot wiped. Getting my apps set back up now, its running fine so far.
Got a question here on installing CROMi 4.2.1, love the ROM when I get it working, my problem is, whenever a new version is out and I try to install I run into all kinds of issues. I'll try to outline the exact problems I'm having here. It goes something like this, I will download new ROM, throw it onto SD card, then boot into recovery and attempt to install. Now if I try to install without clearing any caches/data etc. it will say it installs, but then it won't boot into the ROM at all, just sticks at ASUS screen. So I go through and clear everything, internal, system, dalvik cache etc. Then I try to install again, usually it will fail at least 5-6 times, sometimes it just won't do it at all, so I'll reboot, go into recovery again and try it, still no go. Then I'll use a different SD card, still won't work right, then I'll clear everything again and go for another try and after 3 or 4 or more failed times it will finally install and boot. So I'm curious if there's just something obvious and dumb that I'm missing here, or if it's just a normal issue with this and something that will always be there? It just doesn't make sense to me that it would fail so many times and just work for no apparent reason? Any pointers would be much appreciated!
I assume your using twrp 2.4.4.0-4.2 as your installing CROMi for 4.2.1 and on the 4.2.1 bootloader (10.6.1.8)?
If so not sure this is the issue but I have had & read of other's having issues with some micro sd cards using twrp 2.4.4.0-4.2
You could try in twrp doing a full wipe (cache, dalvik cache, factory reset, system, internal storage) then in twrp file manager copy the CROMi rom zip from your micro sd to your internal storage and install the rom from there and see if that works without issue.

Yep those are the versions I'm working with! Didn't realize there were sd card issues, thanks for the info. One last question, where should I copy the ROM to on the internal storage? Don't want to accidentally copy to a place that's gonna get wiped during install.
Sounds like you have something corrupted.
I'd do a full wipe of internal storage (making sure you have all your backups on external storage), flash the rom and see if that helps.
Also if your ext card is causing issues try booting without it in after the first flash.....

The famous sbdags himself responds! Just wanted to take the opportunity to tell you that your ROM is incredible, puts the Transformer on par with, or better than the iPad. Installed RC2 this morning and it is running great! Thanks for all the great work. When I was having those install issues I would do a full wipe of internal, system, and all caches, but installs would still fail extremely often. The strange thing is, that after a few wipes, and numerous times trying to install, it would finally work and boot and everything would work fine. I'm thinking it has something to do with how the SD card interacts with the recovery system but maybe I don't know what I'm talking about. All that I know is that I downloaded on my tab this morning, and ran the install from the internal storage, and bam, flawless install the first time around. So I'm going to give some kudos to pjc21 because I think it was just an issue with the SD card interfacing with recovery.
