[Q] Question about updating ROMS. - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I've flashed between ROM's a few times now, but never updated a ROM that I am already running. Was curious if I have to do a full wipe before the update like switching between different ROMs, or can just flash the newer version over the older version? If I don't have to do a full wipe, do I still need to wipe the cache and Dalvik? Thanks!

Cache and dalvik.

should i do this before or after flashing the rom, updating from PA 2.99 b8 to b9. thanks

Before.
All ROMs have threads, those threads have op's, they are usually full of the info you need. Each rom is different and requires a different approach.

Quick question regarding bionix v 1.2

I am about to flash the bionix v 1.2 rom and in the downloads section it shows the wipe and wipe free versions. the wipe free versions have gingerbread and tw options but the wipe option only has one: its called wipe. I am coming from flagship v3 so i know i have to use the wipe version but my question is after i flash the wipe version do i have to flash the gingerbread wipe free version if i want the gingerbread look or does gingerbread come already inside of the rom for the wipe version?

[Q] Flash Kernels

Just a noob question, I know...
But Is it stable and secure to flash a diferent Kernel (not a update, a kernel from other dev) into our dear GNex without wiping everything and starting all over again??
Cheers
If you're unlocked go ahead and flash. No need to wipe anything for just a kernel install.

Yes it's unlocked for months, i've already install a bunch of roms and custom kernels, but i never installed a new kernel without a full wipe.

Steps to follow before flashing a new rom

Hey guys, im currently on paranoid android and want to try the xenon hd rom, i read it's recommended to do a full wipe before installing a rom if your running a different rom. Is there any steps I have to do other than a reset, flashing the rom and the gapps, plus the wiping of the cache and the delvik cache?
Regards.

its always recommended to make a backup(nandroid) of your current rom before flashing anything, just in case. backup, wipe data, flash the rom, flash the gapps or kernel if needed, reboot and profit. you dont have to wipe the dalvik/cache because when you flash a rom it automatically wipes it anyways.
One little thing to add to what simms wrote, whether it's recommended or not in the corresponding thread, when you move from one rom to another a full wipe should be a golden rule.

Omega rom upgrading questions

I have couple questions about upgrading omega rom.
1. Should I do factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik when upgrading from 9 to 10?
2. Why should we flash modem seperate than rom ?
3. Which kernel will be included in omega 10?

Its up to you, you can try a "dirty" flash and not wipe and see how it goes, If there are problems then do a wipe.... If you don't want to set up your phone again then make sure you have a nandroid backup and stay on the older version.
Some people need a different modem because their reception is no good with the new modem or it causes battery drain. This would be the reason you would flash a new modem. Easier to leave a lone and see what happens, you can flash a modem.bin file later if needed through ODIN or, my preference, Mobile ODIN....
Read the changelog in the thread to see what kernel is included...
1. Should I do factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik when upgrading from 9 to 10?
You should full wipe when flashing a new rom, but wiping cache and dalvik cache will wokr fine too
2. Why should we flash modem seperate than rom ?
Because each modem works different from other in your region
3. Which kernel will be included in omega 10?
Modified kernel based on stock one
U don't need to do a factory reset specially upgrading from 9 to 10 cause both 9/10 are 4.2.2 based Roms and moreover they are from the same developer.... As for wipe/dalvic cache, the installer does it itself...
Simply go into recovery and flash the file... U should be good to go...
Good luck!

Thanks

If you just flash the new nightly (and I'd reflash the gapps too) you don't need to wipe anything and you won't loose ant data

Ok cool. I have couple of questions if you don't mind.
What do I flash first? ROM or GAPPS?
I heared some nightlies have issues, is there somewhere I can look to find them?
Will I need to reflash Franco Kernel?
thanks
