[Q] Asus or Google Play Store...difference? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey,
had a question, is there actually a difference between the ones they sell at the google play store and the ones from Asus itself?
They started selling the Nexus in Switzerland about a month ago, and i received my Nexus 7 from my girlfriend, which lives on the east coast now.
I been experiences the screen separation too now, but i dont really feel like shipping this tablet back to the US to get it RMAed so i contacted Asus in switzerland and they said since asus and google have different models they dont take the google models. They only take it if i bought it off asus in other words, not form the google play store.
if i get it replaced, do they have different models now at google? i know weird question but are you experiences new issues after your replacement?
btw...tried various fixes about the screen thing, the only one i didnt try was the oven one, which seems too scetchy for me.

My opinion - Asus is jerking you around.
All the units are manufactured by Asus, including the ones sold by the Playstore, and there is only one model,
not counting the white ones given out at the conference.
Manufacturing series started at C70, and I think they are up to C90 now. There is no indication of any engineering changes
to fix problems, although Asus seems to be leaving two of the screws out to address the lifting problem
Now we have people looking for screws to replace those Asus intentionally (apparently) left out...
Just from a customer service point of view, I think you will be happier getting your unit back to Google.
They are really good on replacements, although cracked screens will always be problematic.

Where was your Nexus One made in?

I've read that people have had many issues such as dust under the screen, phone DOA, etc, while others have had no problems what so ever. I think it would be interesting if we could find a pattern between these problems which appear to be quite common.
If you can, please post where your phone was made in. This information can be found on the sticker on the back of your Nexus One box.
Taiwan...no dust, or any issues with my phone

Same here, Taiwan, no issues at all
taiwan - no dust or issues
HTC is a Taiwanese manufacturer so I would assume all the Nexus One are made in Taiwan.
Taiwan... the lower right corner of my screen wasn't sticking properly when I pulled it out o the box. New one on its way.
Maybe a certain batch/production number on the sticker ?
Was just think the same thing. Perhaps this issue can be isolated to certain serial numbers or something that relates to a certain batch of bad phones.
To be honest the N1 will be my first smartphone. I've been waiting since last year to buy a good modern snapdragon Android phone. Have been so excited after ordering the N1.
Thats until I read about the dust issues. Now I'm dreading opening the box. I'll be on my knees praying!
What even more painful is that my phone was just delivered in the UK today, but I won't actually get it until Monday 24th January. The wait is even more painful.

If I buy a Nexus 7 will my screen left

After some research the most prevalent problem with the N7 is quite obviously screen lifting. However, most of the posts I see are months old. So I have a simple question: If I buy my nexus 7 on lets say October the 7th 2012, will it still have the same problems? Has Google even acknowledged the problems at all to any type of press? I heard something about if you serial number starts with C8 it will have a problem but if it starts with C9 it won't? Just want some clarification.
Google and Asus have said nothing about this obviously widespread problem, despite reports that Asus are applying epoxy to the screen and bezel in order to keep the screen down as of the C9 batch, according to some reports.
All depends on where you buy it from and how old their stock is. I bought my 8gb from Staples over a month ago and its perfectly fine.
I bought mine in early Aug. and there is no screen lift at all.
Thanks for the feedback guys. I guess I'll order it from the play store? Unless there's a better way?
i got mine from asda and its fine
Get it from a brick and mortar store and By all means buy a extended /damage warranty from them or from Square trade. If you choose square trade . buy the warranty before you get the device. that way it will cover from minute you open the box...
If they are putting epoxy under the screen how would it be replaced or repaired.. This is kinda first i have heard of this but its quite likely true.. I think this could cause even more screen cracking issues. when weather conditions change .. glass must remain the ability to move . But held firmly in place.
Google play is extremely slow if you need to get a refund or exchange. you can exchange quick but they keep your money on hold for months...

[Rant] So long, Asus - a tech support horror story

TL;DR: Asus' tech support center outright lied to me and to my seller as well, so after a month of juggling my old TF101 between them and the seller I got a full refund and now I'm a happy Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 owner.
Long version: I was burned *badly* by all ICS updates and I went to the trouble of collecting logs for Asus and even dissecting panic traces in search of what the hell was wrong with ICS - a complete waste of time, judging by the way Asus handled things.
On top of that, the eMMC failed in less than 6 months of life, so I had to send the unit in (RMA #1).
I got it back after roughly a week with a brand-new mainboard and .27 pre-installed - or so I thought, since merely 15 hours later it started to misbehave like the first one.
I sent it in for RMA #2 with a detailed explanation of what was wrong with the unit: it got back with a repair form which stated that the speakers weren't properly balanced, so they fixed them - a non-existent problem.
After a day or so, /data nuked itself out of the blue: turns out the mainboard was a refurb after all, so I brought the unit back to my seller and they had to send it in for RMA #3 with a very detailed issue report and requesting clearance to replace the unit. They assured me that it wouldn't take more than a week since all the Brno service center was supposed to do was ascertain the damage and authorize them to replace the unit altogether.
The unit came back three weeks later (two days ago) with a ludicrous repair form: it stated that the unit was sent in for "persistent audio noise" and that there was no such problem. Hardly surprising, considering that I wasn't concerned with audio quality but with eMMC stability...
At that point, the seller agreed that sending it in another time was pointless and refunded me, so I jumped ship and ditched Asus/nVidia altogether for Samsung/Texas Instruments.
Bonus fact: given that another customer was going through the very same via crucis with a TF101, the store quietly pulled all Asus tablets off the shelves (excluding the Nexus 7) and replaced them with ones from Samsung, Acer and Sony.
bad luck eh
oh well, will be nice to see the complaints to Samsung seen as theyve been screwing up ICS updates as well. Never mind and best of luck, you might need it going by the many unhappy, unsupported Samsung tab owners that got left in the dust with tabs gone by :good: (and yes i was one of them)
any shop would do the same thing, handling 3x RMA just a waste of time

[Q] How has Samsung handled your RMA request?

Has anyone bought a Nexus 10 from a place other than the Play store and had to RMA their device? I am curious as how Samsung's service is in terms of getting a replacement unit out to you. Getting a replacement unit from Google is pretty simple but is it as easy to get one from Samsung? Do they attempt to fix the device (for example, if you had light bleeding) or do they send you out a new unit?
Bad service.

I bought mine from walmart and thought my battery was bad. I called samsung and it was painful to say the least. They transferred me 5 times. Once they sent me to google cause they said they didn't handle nexus products. Google sent me back to them I picked the wifi only option and they told me again it was a google product I told him I just got transferred back by google. He sent me to the manager who again tried to tell me they didn't deal with nexus products. So I told them my problem and told them I felt the battery was bad. He finally just said okay I'll put in a ticket for you to send it to Texas (I believe he said, wasn't really listening as I felt I should have just got a new one). He said the process would take somewhere from 2-3 weeks. I said forget I'll just deal with the bad battery until I can buy one and replace it myself.
The shipping process with Samsung is much the same except that it takes multiple transfers on the phone to find someone that has a screen that can do an RMA ticket on the device. My problem is that in doing the work they don't really make sure they solved the problem you had. I had my screen replaced and they put a worse screen in with four corners of large light bleed and they even managed to scratch up the back of my device. I was upset to say the least and had to ship it back for them to fix their shoddy workmanship. On top of that... I sent mine back on the 16th and it didn't get opened until 2 days after arrival. As of a week ago it has been sitting on hold waiting for parts. So its been in Samsung's hands now for 2 weeks and no word on when they will get whatever parts they need in stock or ship it back. When you ship they pre pay a 2 day air ups label and send it back 2 day air as well. Hope to get it back reasonably soon as the device has been out of use now for over a month. First trip took about two weeks total. Second trip who knows.
BTW, I did buy mine from play but was tired of worse RMA replacements. Everything was perfect on mine other than a little dimming along the camera edge of the screen and a dead pixel.
Sent from my often RMA'd Nexus 4, So that I can use the one I'm using now when I get the 6th and hopefully final one.

SGBest buying experience

Hi guys,
I want to share with you my experience with the post-selling service of this web, as is quite famous sending overseas and they have really good prices & stuff. But when you have a problem after buying, the scenario changes...
I wanted the 32GB LTE version, and this was the only place to buy the tablet two weeks ago (I´m living in Hong Kong and it was not released yet here). So after checking everywhere, this was a good option as they´re from Singapore.
I called before placing the order to be sure about the stock, and everything looked fine. Just a couple of days of delay but nothing serious. So I went ahead and I placed the order and paid.
As they told me by phone, instead of 2 days from my payment, the shipping was going to take a little bit more than what they said in the web, but just 2 or 3 days more. Not a big deal, at the end I wanted that model so I agreed.
After near one week without news, I contact them asking for my tablet, as they told me that I would receive in less than one week, but was not the case. Stock problems and these things and they could not be sure when the tablet would be shipped... Then I explained them that I already called to confirm just that scenario, to avoid this kind of problems. So I asked my money back if the tablet would delay more than one week more. Surprisingly, they received more in that moment and they were going to send it me to me. Great I thought!
Then, when I open the packet, the first thing I saw was that the seal was broken... Ok I thought, if everything is fine no problem...But Just I opened the box and I found some dust inside and some signs that the tablet was already used. (Again, no problem if everything is fine). But was not. The tablet had a damage in the top side of the frame (see attached pic).
So I contacted them, explaining the problem and that I was disposed to pay the shipping costs back, but that I wanted my money back, as the tablet was already released in HK. But for my surprise, they reply me that was not possible and they were going to send the tablet to the Samsung service to check, and then they would decide
Is my fault to be impatient and not wait for the release in the place I´m living, but come on! Is a new product and very expensive!I have to wait the samsung´s survey? what they are going to send me back? who knows....
Just I wanted to share my experience for those buyers that want to get this version (difficult to find in USA & Europe) to consider the problems that can occur. In my case, I live in HK, so quite close and cheap to send back (but from Europe would be quite pricey and slow). The funny think I told them is why you send this item (already opened) with the damage! is clear that the costumer will claim!. But no reply ...
Good luck, and sorry for my english.
Yup I had one that had a bulge in the top left corner..seems that Samsung still has lingering manufacturing defects..the only one I had a problem with was the one I ordered from Samsung.com. my local shops and amazon.com were great...
