Hello All, as many of you know i have had one of the famous bricked samsung galaxy i9000. Since Bell wont honour my proposal for returning my Cell phone with a receipt (not under my name), i have come to the conclusion that we need action. Below is a site i am going to contact, based out of toronto, if enough people call, we can get this "defective issue" known.
http://www.sse.gov.on.ca/mcs/en/Pages/Contact.aspx
I am also in the process of starting a petition but would like the help of people of this forum on to how to go about this.
We need to make Samsung honour their corporation competencies and aknowledge that not EVERYONE will be on contract with BELL. We must take action. I am requesting help from ALL those affected.
thanks
p.s. first way to start is to get the ministry of consumer electronics to acknowledge the defect and we shall start a petition.
Another resource you may want to tap into is the Commissioner for Complaints for Telecommunications Services (http://www.ccts-cprst.ca/complaints/service-providers). They are a third party that attempt to resolve complaints against wireless providers.
Not sure if it applies to you, but take it for what it's worth.
Count me in dude!!! Im tired of not being listened to about my issues with my $500.00 "not fit for purpose" phone!!!
I believe that we not just go after Bell but Samsung as well!!!

myself as well.
I assume you are referring to the internal memory problem?
Why did they say they wont honor your warranty? You haven't really put much information here.

I have the full receipt for my phone and everything, the phone was deactivated and the number is not in service. However, the only thing connected to the current user is a IMEI, which i had called the person who owned it, they didnt know english very well and wouldnt transfer the ownership to me.
This is a flaw in the system.
I am starting a petition to make Samsung and Bell aware that the first batch and alot of the I900m Bell devices have a Internal SD hardware problem. This is a defect, we have witnessed of up to 30% returns on these phones because of this defect alone.
The fact that Bell wont honour their warranty with samsung because of a simple (not having my name) on the receipt is trivial. I had a copy printed out. Samsung needs to recall these devices or at the very least acknowledge something here.
30% failure? Where is that figure from?
And have you tried arguing with Bell for a repair? Or did they simply say no, and you gave up? Did you try to escalate?
By law, you should be able to go to your consumer affairs place anyway, and tell them that Bell wont accept your receipt. I don't think you need a petition.
Class action suit against "samsung" only.. Count me in tooo

By the way, when you say return, do you mean repair? Because by law in most countries, they don't have to offer refunds outside the first 2 weeks if the unit is faulty.
This thread needs a lot more details...
I am in also.

i have the receipt but the purchaser of my phone was friend who has now moved to new york. I have no contact with him. And by law bell has to honour its warranty code of conduct, if there is a recepit available.
I am going back tommrow to talk to the http://www.bell.ca/shopping/en_CA_ON.Samsung-Galaxywith-Google/69236.details of the store, any tips or suggestions are welcome. I have read people have returned phones even WITHOUT a receipt...and look, oh i HAVE one.....interesting.
edit** the petition was for those who were unlucky and have been turned down by Bell because of no receipt.
That didn't really answer anything.. If you have a receipt, argue with them again, or go consumer affairs, but their warranty code only likely covers REPAIRING!
Do you mean repair or return and where is that 30% failure figure from? By law, they don't need to refund you, unless you have tried replacing it a few times and the problem keeps reoccurring (and you can prove the product is seriously flawed).
I believe you mean repair, but "return" is ambiguous.

according to Bell it was about 20%-30% of phones were brought back. That is why Samsung held off on the 2nd batch of shipments to fix the internal sd problem, and bells excuse was all the phones were sold out, when really there was a huge backorder.
thanks for clarifiying bud. I do mean Repair. I have the receipt and everything from the folks who bought the phone, the only problem is the receipt is not in MY name. however, i tried contacting the people who had orginally purchased the phone and they wont do anything for me. They dont speak english. So i am going today to argue with the manager of Bell at my mall and tell him that this is straight up bs. Becuase i have all of the required information, the account cancelled their service and got a new phone...ugh its just such a tight situation.
** as for the petition, if you would like your names on it, please inbox me Name, City, and COuntry you are residing in and i will add it. Thanks
I don't know how these things work in Canada, but in Australia a petition is really not going to sway a legal argument. In fact it could prejudice a case, in some circumstances.
I suggest you take the matter up with Bell again. Then talk to Consumer Affairs yourself.
Shouldn't Samsung be your point of contact BTW? I would assume since you have no contract with Bell they should be absolved of any responsibility to service your phone.
In this case the manufacturer would be the people to contact. In 95% of the things I buy have a manufacturers warranty, not a retailers.
I wish you luck, but you really should pursue this on a private basis. If things don't work out then post up your experience. If the do work out then post up how you got around it.
BTW people don't give out your name and location to anybody on the net. I know Jark99 is 95% likel,y to be a nice chap, but giving out details like that is a bit silly.

haha sorry about the "names" thing. I should have suspected that, i just wanted to make sure that we had a legit petition to force a class action law suit.
As for the manufacturers warranty, Apparently Samsung goes through Bell. But NOT really. Bell goes through a intermediary called Futuretec Solutions located in Toronto, Ontario. I have called samsung canada and they wont help me out at all. They keep saying "go to bell, go to bell." Well now im going to give bell a piece my mind, Bell is the only company to carry these phones, thus if there is a problem no one can go elsewhere. its bs. im pretty pissed off and going to show Bell that, yesterday i didnt, but today ill talk to the manager.
get the class action or whatever you guys are trying to do up and going already, and count me in
got 2 phones still waiting to be repaired but can't because they wont allow it without the invoice, even when we offered to pay for the repairs
Attention:
To all who have a internal sd card error and have bought the phone around the release date or afterwards. If you dont have a orginal receipt, go to bell and try to find a service rep who looks kind of new. From there tell them you dont have the receipt and need they might be able to print you out one. I got mine printed out and i went to another Bell Store to get mine sent out even though the phone was NOT under my name. I think the only way to get peoples phones fixed is talking to the right people.
I contacted the Ministry of consumer electronics AND telecommunications services to file a complaint, but i cannot as i am not a BELL member. If anyone is a Bell member and has a 2nd hand phone you can call them to file a complaint, and theyll act as a intermediary between you and Bell. ill keep updating this thread as i find information

I was getting off the bus the other day at a busy stop and just saw something black and shiney on the floor so I picked it up and put it in my pocket and checked it later to be surprised it wad a droid 1. Disconnected obviously but I rooted it and hooked it up with games for my daughter.
Question is... money is tight, can this be sold even if it was reported lost? I know gsm phones aren't a problem, just swap the sim card out, I even updated jailbroke and unlocked a disabled iphone 3g. I heard if the esn reports back with a balance or its been reported lost that its useless.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
More then likely the esn number has been flagged so it will not work. Secondly, show some good karma and return the phone. Whoever may have lost may not have had insurance.

At least post a 'Found' notice or something and give the rightful owner a chance to describe it, etc.
Description of a Droid: Black, amazing, better than iPhone.
Call Verizon and let them know that you found the phone and they'll contact the owner. You're one more step away from being a great samaritan. Esn is locked out anyways so its paperweight in terms of phone conect for you.
Just contacted the owner yesterday (he was still logged into facebook on the droid when I found it) and he told me he upgraded to the Droid X (like me) and told me to toss the phone. My conscience is clear.

did he say you can use it? the" Esn "is probably Locked so you'd not be able to use it as a phone. Droid is not a bad backup to Have. I'd ask him if he reported it stolen? so that the ESn can be free. if that would be OK w/him if you're able to activate it.
Thats what scares me the most about these phones... yeah you found a random guys phone and said he was still logged into facebook on it.. so obviously you had access to his information
me personally, I have my bank accounts.. credit cards.. EVERYTHING on my phone.. so if I ever lost this thing, i would probobly be mortified thinking someone has all my information to everything in the entire world..
I have a pattern lock on it, but im sure there is ways around that
Regardless of what the guy said later on - You were gonna try to sell some guy's phone that you found and wanted to know if there were ways around it being reported lost? Maybe it would be teetering on moral to just sell it if it wasn't reported lost, but wanting to circumvent a lost ESN for your own personal profit is not just illegal, that's evil. You're an asshole.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Easiest way around the pattern lock is to look at the phone screen using a point-source light from an angle. You'll often be able to see the pattern as a smudge on the screen.
There is a security research paper on this. Don't have a link handy.
At least my conclusion is that it is broken. If at any point one of you thinks I did something wrong or there is something I can do to fix the issue, feel free to let me know.
I bought my evo sometime last year, I believe around September. I did not purchase sprint's TEP, I was content with the standard warranty and $35 repair fee if the time came. It only took me about two weeks to decide I wanted to root my phone, which I did successfully with unrevoked3. I removed bloatware with titanium backup, used setcpu, etc. and the phone worked great for a long time. I discovered rom manager soon after and tried some roms, including fresh, caulkins, cm6. I stuck with cm612 for a while and I loved it. I always cleared data before a new rom, and once I got used to the clockworkmod interface I used the cache/dalvik clear tools, as well as return the phone to factory specs feature.
Now, for as long as I remember, the phone rebooted itself unexpectedly, although it was very infrequent at first. Until about the beginning of Jan., it rebooted itself only a handful of times. It has progressed to the point where now I can't use it for more than 5 minutes without it rebooting. It will power cycle loop on the evo 4g POST screen, before android even loads. Sometimes, it will do this and stop power cycling, and simply vibrate 5 times and be unresponsive. The only way to stop this loop or the unresponsive state is the take the battery out and re-insert.
I troubleshooted as much as I could, before deciding that the issue was probably hardware related. Using the how to unroot your phone guide <http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780141> I unrooted the phone successfully (s-on), and loaded the original stock rom just fine. The phone still exhibited the same behavior with the stock software, so I took it to a store in Chicago a few days ago (I live in so. CA but was on vacation in Il). Anyway, I was foolish as I did not run the OTA updates to 3.7 and the tech lady told me it was happening because the phone wasn't updated. OK, my fault, even though that was a bs response.
I messed with it some more, it's still broken. So today I brought the phone to a sprint store here in CA, fully UNrooted, stock rom, updated all system updates. OTA 3.7xx, newest radios, pri, prl, profile. It is acting worse than it ever has before. I dropped the phone off and came back an hour later and the guy tells me that they reset the device and it should work now, and that I shouldn't root it as it voids my warranty. I said, how do you know it's been rooted? He replied with "our guys are really good."
So I took the phone to lunch right next door, fully stock again, and as I am logging into my google account to access the market it reboots itself again. And loops. I take it back to the sprint store and tell them look, its doing the same thing, you have completely reset it, it's not rooted, this is a problem.
Next they tell me they can't get me a replacement phone (for the $35 repair fee) because it has been rooted. I ask them to show me how they know it has been rooted, and he goes OK. He boots up my phone and one of their evos into recovery, and mine scans for the PC36IMG file and finds it. So ok, my bad again, but I say hold on a second. I took my SD card out and give the phone back. I ask them to prove to me that the phone is rooted, they try the same thing again and of course there is no difference between the phones in how they boot to recovery. Basically I press the issue further, the tech gives me some bull**** about how they can tell, if you root the phone EVER it leaves files on the phone forever. I can feel that they are lying to me, and they only know because I [foolishly] left my SD card in it as I dropped it off.
After spending about 30 minutes talking to their representatives and then about ten with the tech behind their repair center glass, he told me my only option is to talk to HTC to try and get a new phone. Mine has been red-flagged at sprint stores now for having been rooted, even though I NEVER GAVE THEM A ROOTED PHONE TO LOOK AT.
If you can't tell, i'm extremely frustrated, as my very expensive phone, on stock software and unrooted is completely useless.
Any opinions/ideas as to if 1) how I can get a replacement phone, or 2) what I have done wrong or what I can do to potentially remedy the phone?
Colin
Wow that sucks man. I know a lot of Sprint reps and almost all of them are rooted and running custom roms. I would delete the img file off of the sdcard and take it to a different Sprint store. It really depends on who you are dealing with, so try taking it to a different Sprint store if you can. If not, try to find a day where that guy isn't working lol. I'm sorry about your luck, but some people are just ridiculous.
Take to a different sprint store with a clean SD card and hope there aren't notes on the account?

Yeah, but you don't know that to actually be the case or just a scare tactic. I still say go to another store and try.
If they start talking about it being flagged on your account for being rooted, your best bet is to play dumb.

I really doubt that, I bet that is more of a scare tactic. Try what the others have said then take it to another store, you'll be fine.
So because your phone had a PC36IMG on your storage card that automatically means its been rooted? That's BS. I would call Sprint and talk to them. I would tell Sprint that you only had the file on your SD card because the phone wouldn't boot and you were trying to fix it since the store wouldn't help (the first store). When calling sprint its all in who you talk to and I always start off as nice as possible.

Yes. Like I said, I then removed my SD card and gave the phone back and asked him to show me that it has been rooted. He didnt even try, he just told me that "they know now" and that once you root "there are always files left behind" and they can always tell. I knew it was BS but they weren't giving me an inch. I was indeed very polite the whole time, while also pressing the issue.
I am pretty livid and I am almost to the point where I'd rather cancel my account then give them any more money for service.

Well I have told the computer when I first call and its asks why I'm calling I say cancel account. That will get you to someone who can actually do something. No TEP is a real downer in this case. Got another store around?

@zone
yes, there are several other stores around me with repair centers. They aren't uncommon in orange county.
Another thing I forgot to mention, at the very end of the debate with the repair tech, after he told me "there are always files left behind that we can check" after it has been rooted, I asked him to explain these files to me and if he could show me, he told me no and that "he's not allowed to tell customers that."
LOL. I don't like how the sprint representatives think they can screw with their customers like that.
To expand a little more and how different stores are. I called the store and asked what their policy was on rooted phones. They said as long as it wasn't software they didn't care. So after they couldn't fix the phone (bad ear piece) they ordered another one and told me they could only give me the replacement if I brought mine back in the original unrooted state. So that's what I did. Some of these stores just seem to have some real asses working.
Sent from my HTC EVO 4G!
Of course with all that said I can somewhat understand where the stores are coming from. With all these SBC kernels and overclocking they probably think you damaged the processor. I'm not taking their side I'm just saying there are all kinds of people. The problem with rooting is you could absolutely damage the phone. Again I'm not saying this is the case just looking at it from another prospective that may help you negotiate a replacement phone.
Sent from my HTC EVO 4G!
Not sure if this will work but try rerooting then flash caulkins "format all" then reload a rom then flash new kernel and new radios, without 1.90 pri and nv see if that helps the reboot issue. i'd recommend Azreals stock turbo 3.70 rom. Had a friend with the axact same problem, this fixed it. I also reformatted his sd card while i was at it.
these techs know when a phone has been rooted. and yes they will flag your account for a rooted phone. my advice is to pay the fee they are asking.
Sorry to hear about your visit to the Sprint store...
1. It isn't illegal to root your phone any more. They passed a law not to long ago:
http://www.knowyourcell.com/news/548133/new_law_makes_jailbreaking_and_unlocking_legal.html
2. There is no way to tell if a phone was rooted. They are assuming that because you left the PC36IMG on your SD card. If the technician paid attention and seen you had it set in the off position, but that doesn't prove anything either.
3. Sounds like you got a guy that gets off being a jerk. Not the customer service type of person that Sprint needs working for them. Common sense says if you have the stock firmware back on the phone and it still is acting up, that the phone is defective. Not to endorse fraud, but if you nuked your phone or ran over it with your car and brought the pieces in, you would have been better off then being honest.
4. Your phone should still be under manufacturers warranty since the phone came out June 4th, so no way that have owned an EVO for a year yet.
5. I have found E-mailing to [email protected] seems to get results. Corporate wants to make things right, and they have the power to get things done.
Wish you the best of luck!
@zone
I can see where they are coming from as well. For morality's sake though, I can truthfully say I have never experimented with voltage modifying kernels or SBC kernels, etc. Only a few popular roms.
@ifly
If tomorrow I am still unsuccessful I will try more software options, although I am 95% positive it is a hardware issue. This is coming from a network engineer who is very familiar with hardware systems.
@fixxer
I was perfectly happy to pay them the $35 repair fee in order to get my replacement. I never said that I wouldn't. In fact at one point a sprint representative offered to do that, I said good, that is exactly what I came in for. She came back and said nevermind, I can't because it is rooted.
@weidnerj
Thanks for the link, and it sounds like we are on exactly the same page. Thanks for the contact, I will see what I can do with Dan.
I plan on trying another sprint store tomorrow to see if the phone is actually flagged.
Even if it is flagged I would tell them the phone wasn't rooted and hell I don't even know what that means. I have no idea were the other store even got that idea. Little white lie.

A stock Evo is like strapping a 5,000 lb boat to a ferrari - it just doesn't make sense. (No pun intended)
Most of us root our phones to get the full potential out of them and unfortunately some Sprint Repair reps don't find the whole rooting process to be worthwhile and seeing how they are the ones who will determine whether or not they will service your phone some say no to rooted phones. I walked into my local repair center and handed the rep my unactivated Evo (I was on my BlackBerry for the week). Stupidly, I left my Evo running CM7 and my splash screen is an inverted version of the stock one. The rep called me over asking me why my splash screen and boot-up were different and I simply explained that I had bought the phone that way from a friend. He quickly saw it was running Gingerbread and although his face looked a little like this I knew it wasn't gonna be fun. He then realized my phone was rooted and told me he wouldn't service it (I have the infamous power button crack and dirt under my screen) and also *attempted* to make note to black list the phone so it could no longer be serviced because the warranty was "voided." Luckily the phone wasn't activated so no notation was made and I unrooted the phone and went to another store and had it serviced.
This experience led me to come back to XDA, where I know the majority of us have our Evo's rooted and will need service at one point or another. I would like to create a list of stores that have serviced our phones rooted and don't care, making it easier for us to service the phone because the whole UNrooting process and RErooting process is a pain the arse and a waste of time if for example the store 6 miles from you doesn't work with rooted phones but the store 10 miles away does... trust me, the $.50 in gas you use will save you the time and headache of rerooting. Please post the stores in this format and I will periodically add them to the list on the first post.
Format:
City, State - Type of store (corporate or indepent) - will or will not work with root
I will start with California:
Encino, CA - Corporate Sprint Store -Will not work with root
Anyone in North East Columbus, I there's a store up by Polaris and in New Albany. I know guys at both places that'll replace a broken Evo even if it's rooted. Hell, they both know I tether without paying for it and don't care lol.
Any store will address hardware issues with the device being rooted. None will, or should, address software issues though.
Hopefully i dont have to service mine. I knowwwwww for a fact the stores round here frown on rooting!!!!

I like how you want to start a thread listing the stores that WILL fix you rooted phone, and you list a store that WON'T.
I see this thread going nowhwhere, as NO sprint store should be doing this. It's their policy that rooting voids your warranty. Even if SOMEONE finds a store that does, its completely up to that rep's individual policy, whether or not he/she will say anything about the phone being rooted. So even if you do find a rep to do this, it's not guaranteed for everyone else that goes to the same rep.
I would not list the store that went out of their way to help me. This can only cause harm. I will tell you of a store I hate and find totally useless:
430 Boardman Poland Rd.,
Youngstown, OH - aka Boardman Ohio
(330) 965-3700
I hate everything about this store including its location and all the useless people that work there. I would not buy a phone there or send any person to them.
Yea my local Sprint store,
Hall Road
Sterling Heights, MI
Is not safe. I know this isn't a store that you can go to (duh) but I went in there after flashing the leaked 1.47 froyo update when I wasn't rooted and they told me they couldn't do anything. Imagine that? A Sprint store that won't support their customer? At all. No new phone, no solution, didn't void my warranty, just go away. What is the point of this thread? Pretty useless info imho and only asking from trouble for store's that do repair/replace rooted evo's.

That led me to root and realize that there is this great dev community which fixed my phone in a half hour.

had the same exact experience at my local store. absolutely DREADFUL customer service. the tech there will not ever lift a finger to help even someone with an unrooted phone, and will usually just send you on your way.

Any store will address hardware issues with the device being rooted. None will, or should, address software issues though.

No, they won't. I took my rooted evo in for screen replacement (dust bunnies under the screen). I was told that because my phone was rooted they wouldn't service the hardware issue.
Moar gees with gginggerbread and tapatalk!
This is a really STUPID idea!!! Lets make a list of all the stores that may be violating Sprints policy of not working on phones that have violated the warranty by rooting. That way Sprint can discipline all those stores for violating policy and then no stores will work on a rooted phone.
Because im sure Sprint is trolling xda...
All our techs at my store on Hurstbourne in Louisville will work on them

I normally just lurk on XDA, but this is hilarious.
To summarize your actions, you have admitted to downloading a stolen, proprietary, unreleased, partially tested, unsupported, incomplete piece of software... then willfully performed an action violates your TOS with Sprint (that YOU SIGNED). Now that we have that straight, please explain exactly what Sprint "owed you" for customer service...
Because some of their employees have done the same thing themselves?
I'll ask the hypothetical question at my Sprint store about if they'd service a rooted phone or not (doubtful by some of the people there) when I pick up a spare battery for my Evo and possibly a standalone charger.
You've thoroughly convinced me. Sprint needs to have its lawyers contact you about modifying its TOS, ex tempore!
...totally owe you a fruit cake and some free minutes.

Encino, CA - Corporate Sprint Store -Will not work with root

but my xperia has been stolen, most likely by one of two coworkers. i don't have any proof other than i left the phone at work and neither one of them found the phone. i work for a verizon inderect btw.
so i don't know what to do go to the owner and explain and possibly get fired or ostracized, i have no proof, and i'm pretty sure the phone was wiped. though i did call verizon and they told me they can blacklist the esn though i recently filed paperwork for my employee line with that esn so that will be interesting.
any suggestions, i'm really pissed and don't know what to do, i really don't want to think i work with such ****ty people that they would steal from a co-worker, and i really don't want to think i work with people stupid enough to think i won't catch them.
any suggestions?
I don't know if they can but can't they track it? I mean I am almost sure they can use the GPS in it to track it. If you work for verizon shouldn't they understand?

yeah they do, thing is i hadn't activated it yet, had just submitted the paperwork last week, and i am 99.99% sure i left it at work on the fourth, both the employees (one of em my manager) said they hadn't seen the phone.
thing is verizon can't track it if it's not active, and i'm also very sure the phone was wiped, as it's not showing up in the market as far as i can tell.
even if it does get activated by them (i.e. verizon) it has to be *228 option one for the phone to take the activation. but i can't believe that the employees would be that stupid to steal it, what are they gonna do keep it? and me not notice. plus i'm gonna report the esn as lost or stolen so it'll be a bad esn.
i must have just lost it but i have looked everywhere and can't think of where else it could be but one of them having taken it.
just venting more than anything. sorry for cluttering the forum up with my personal **** btw.
Hey, you gotta release your stress somewhere . I was always under the impression that the carrier can be tracked your phone easily but don't do it because you are on a contract and need to buy something new from them.
Two years ago I bought a phone, used it for 15 minutes and then switched back to old phone so that I can return the new one without going over the 30minutes return policy. The customer service rep can distinguish exactly how many minutes were used on each phone the previous night. This means that they know which phne is using their services at all time. I'm with rogers gsm network

I think I read somewhere in this list of comments that you were sure the phone was wiped. Any chance that it isn't? You could try something like LookOut's "Plan B" from the Android Market web page, and if it is on your account still, you can tell it to install on the phone. When/if it does, it would start tracking it and tell you where it thinks it is.
If the phone has been wiped, then it is pretty much down to the procedures you described. Block the ESN/IMEI, report it as stolen, etc. If you can't prove it was the two other folks, then don't say it was them. Simply state your phone has been lost and/or stolen. Say you already did your due diligence of reporting it gone. I guess this is also the place to make sure that you have backups of your SD cards, as well as always to install some sort of remote-control-and-location service on your phone. If it doesn't get wiped, then you can do so. If it is wiped, then less to worry about other than your loss (and documents on the SD card).
Very good advice dvds I thank you. Unfortunately those methods havent worked. I will try plan b though

well the least you could do is put a poster where it was stolen and offer a reward.
Also ask if you can look at the security camera feeds if the location has cameras.
Makes sure you ask to check the camera as soon as possible they are usually deleted after a while.
Good luck

Keep checking Craiglist in your local area? Some stolen merchandise end up there.
Getting the ESN on the lost list is a great step but if they work there too couldn't they take it off the list? Keep that ESN and keep up with ebay and craigslist. Thats mess up, gotta be some kinda low to take from a co worker. They had to know you were gonna report it lost, they stole a paper weight.

If you have the box it has your serial # on it. Verizon has a record of your phones serial number also. They take it down when you activate it.
