Hey guys. Quick question. I was just wondering if anyone knows a way or an app that can lock the Nexus 7 and unlock it as well? I've only had my Nexus 7 for a few days and even though i love it, the lock/unlock button above the volume rockers seems very flimsy and i fear that it may break or stop working one day.
does anyone know a way of unlocking and locking the tablet without using the power button? i've found plenty of apps that can lock it, but none that can unlock it. is it impossible?
Try The proximity screen off app in the play store. Or get a case with sleep/wake features.
I use Wake Up Screen to unlock with a shake, and Screen Off TL to switch off with a shake. Both apps are available in the PlayStore.
Edit: Number of shakes and strength are cutomizable.

i just bought a case right before this comment from the local best buy which had NO Nexus 7 specific cases other than universal 7'' cases.
will be going to return it with nexus in hand for a magnetic case.

I am wondering if there is something like pgm for the nexus 7. It's really handy on my galaxy nexus, just to be able to swipe the screen. I think it's even more needed on the nexus 7 since the power button is sometimes awkward to find.

If u mean to put it to sleep without pressing the power button; yes there is. it isn't a swype, but a button you can put on each home screen. Don't remember the name of the app, but it's in the play store.
Some custom roms will allow you to "remap" button and add longpress feature so you could put lockscreen on longpress of Homebutton for example, you could also put a widget on your home screen or even in notification bar ( not sur for notification bar)
i know what your talking about. i don't think its on this device yet as far as i know but i know in the evo lte section zarboz has been trying to get the source code for that feature so he can bake it into his kernel. im sure if you ask one of the kernel devs here they can try to get it as well. not making any promises tho seeing how zarboz has been trying for 2 somewhere around 2 months as far as i know with no luck so far.

hes not trying to put it to sleep guys, he is trying to wake the screen with a swipe.
Yes wake is more important, although pgm does sleep with a swipe of the navigation keys as well.

how about a smart cover? wakes/sleeps the screen with a fold of the flap.

If his finger was magnetic then he could wake with a swipe of the finger. I guess your hand would get tired from holding your finger in place to keep the screen off though...

My buddy actually had magnets inserted into the tips of his index finger and thumb (he's a techie guy... and crazy). He had them "installed" as a test to test implants. He can pick up screws, paperclips, and of course, turn on the smart screens!
So implanting finger magnets has to be the best answer. KISS principle

Seriously though if there is anything I hate more than cases it's cases with covers. :-$

Hi All,
I have recently backed this kickstarter project: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects...le-worlds-most-versatile-stands/?ref=kicktraq
It seems awesome and exactly what I am looking for but I am now concerned about the neodymium magnet attached to the back of my N7. I searched the internet and XDA but although I found concerns I found no valid conclusions about if a magnet like this attached to my device, not on a case, would cause any issues.
I see some people made some mounts that involved neodymium magnets, but it seemed like the device was connected to the magnets for short periods off times (car mounts) not long term/24-7/permanently like with this stand that seems so awesome to me!
Why no responses??
Any idea why there have been no responses? I would have posted this in the accessories section, but when I indicated it was a question I was told to post it here in Q&A.
I have seen that a few years ago people posted neodymium magnets would not be safe to tablets, but I wonder if that is still the case. Is there potential for screen damage? data storage damage? GPS interference? by having the magnet attached to the tablet, instead of on a case.
Does this also mean, that if I do get this product and the magnet is attached to me tablet, I can't have the tablet near my laptop (which has a regular hard drive or credit cards?
Thanks!
me personally, i would never have any magnets anywhere near my electronics no matter who or what says.
but the project and its devs seem safe as indicated on their page. just keep in mind it's your risk
Those magnets shouldn't harm anything. The only issue I can think of would be accidentally locking the device with the magnet.

By pressing the power button just like how you would normally wake the device. Or by moving the tablet away from the magnet should automatically wake it.

Got it!! I thought so...but just needed to verify!
Hopefully with the magnet being attached to the tablet it won't cause any issues. With the bigger/stronger magnet on the stand and the smaller magnet being on the back of the tablet I should have no issues with just separating the two!!
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!!
Can't wait for my stand!!!!!
Is there any ROM or kernel out there with a sweep2wake function for the GS4? I hate the physical home button with every fibre of my being, and the power buttons on Galaxy devices over the ages have been known to fail after long periods of heavy use (I had constant power button problems with my GSII Skyrocket).
I would much rather just be able to swipe the screen to wake the phone up. If the Xoom has sweep2wake we've got to be able to get it working on the GS4 also.
U can always get one of these cases that unlocks phone when opened. I love it

No thanks. I don't use cases. I would prefer the swipe feature.
I want this too. Hope someone can chime in with a solution.
I don't use a case either.

That would murder the battery.
I personally think it is foolish not to use a case.
To my knowledge, there is no sweep2wake apps that will work with this device... I could be wrong. I personally love having the home button. I also use the Spigen slim armor view case. It is incredible.

its actually not really a case, u replace the back and it just flips over like an ipad cover and turns the screen on and off, i hate cases too, never used one with my galaxy note, but i actually love this, saves on batter and i dont have to use the damn power button.
It's definitely not a battery issue, but it bothers me whenever the slightest tap sets off the clock popup. I don't think it's a case issue since I use a light-weight one (Poetic slim case). I would like to think that the context-processor responds to the disruption in the magnetic field which is why it's so sensitive. I can't test this though.....Does anyone happen to have a flip cover for the Moto X?
I use an app called uListen so I can stream YouTube videos with my screen off. I've noticed that app makes the active display go nuts.

It acts when the phone moves simulating you picking it up. When I'm on my recliner it activates every time I move in the recliner. It does what it is meant to do I like it for checking the time and not having to activate the phone.

Turn the phone over so the screen is facing down. Problem solved.
I love it. I pick the phone up and just swipe to wake. Then with a Nova Launcher gesture (swipe up to toggle Quick Settings) and a custom Sleep tile in the bottom right thanks to GravityBox, I've probably cut my mashing on the power button by probably 95%. I barely have to touch it anymore.
I love the active display but it does annoy me when I'm driving. I stick it in the cup holder and every time the truck moves, the screen turns on and I can see it out of the corner of my eye. And I don't know if anyone else lives in PA, but trying to avoid the potholes and inevitably hitting one keeps the screen on almost the entire time...
I also found I now pick up my Nexus 7 expecting the screen to turn on automatically

Hahaha, I've done the same with my Galaxy Nexus and even my wife's Razr Maxx.
PA here too... and the potholes have become unbearable.
I really like the sensitivity... I think its great that it will pop on virtually anytime I move the phone, but not to the point of wasting my battery. I swear there have been times where I could just wave my hand over the phone and it would flick the time and lock up, but maybe it was just in my head.
I hear ya all on the Nexus 7 deal, I do the same from time to time, just expect it to turn on. Would be something easy for Google to add moving forward though.

Well that just defeats the purpose of the active display
But mine is very sensitive as well. Even when there is no movement I will see it go on . Doesn't really bother me. Only when I use another phone...I end up shaking the phone to get the active display to show

Do you Assist app for driving? I've noticed that after I'm driving for a couple minutes the phone must turn down the active notifications as it won't turn on with little bumps. Sometimes it won't even turn on when I pick it up.
But sitting in my house, it'll turn on every time I bump it.
Cover the proximity sensor and it'll assume it's face down or in your pocket.
The proximity sensor is on ALL the time, and it is used in conjunction with the accelerometer to turn on the screen. If you don't want it to turn on in certain situations, do the above.
I cover it with my microfiber screen wiping cloth sometimes when I want it face up but without AN.

If you press the button on the back it wakes the phone and if you press the buttons either side the volume will increase or decrease (I will leave the excitement of which button you press for the desired effect a mystery for you to find out for yourself!)
Aww he was just being helpful...lol probably first knock device. I was pretty excited with mine too, kept "knocking" it all day lol

I honestly turned off this function on the G2 and G3 out of habit... is it better on the G3?
On the G2 my pants or thigh keep unlocking the phone... I guess don't wear skinny jeans with this phone?
Maybe i'll turn it back on and try again to see if they improved anything...

I put it in my back pocket and have Cerberus emailing me, informing me my bum cheek was trying to crack the knock code.
But back on topic... 5 years to post one topic about a well know feature is quite poor, this dude has racked up 40 tips:
a little thing i noticed about the knock feature is that the grid size doesn't matter! I've been messing around with it all day and love the fact that I can make the pattern very tiny and to the right (since im right handed) and it unlocks flawlessly!

It only works if there's light. I've never had trouble when in a dark room, but if I'm holding my phone landscape and double tap to wake, it doesn't turn on if my hand is over the light sensor. Took me a while to realize that was the problem - I thought it wasn't working right.
wow.... just... wow...

Yes, with anything really - a paper towel, a shirt, a microfiber cloth. If my finger heat happens to touch the screen twice, this will happen. If I hold the cloth down hard, it won't happen.
With the screen off, if you hold down the Volume Down button for a few seconds the phone will open up in camera mode.
