If you press the button on the back it wakes the phone and if you press the buttons either side the volume will increase or decrease (I will leave the excitement of which button you press for the desired effect a mystery for you to find out for yourself!)

I honestly turned off this function on the G2 and G3 out of habit... is it better on the G3?
On the G2 my pants or thigh keep unlocking the phone... I guess don't wear skinny jeans with this phone?
Maybe i'll turn it back on and try again to see if they improved anything...

I put it in my back pocket and have Cerberus emailing me, informing me my bum cheek was trying to crack the knock code.
But back on topic... 5 years to post one topic about a well know feature is quite poor, this dude has racked up 40 tips:
a little thing i noticed about the knock feature is that the grid size doesn't matter! I've been messing around with it all day and love the fact that I can make the pattern very tiny and to the right (since im right handed) and it unlocks flawlessly!

It only works if there's light. I've never had trouble when in a dark room, but if I'm holding my phone landscape and double tap to wake, it doesn't turn on if my hand is over the light sensor. Took me a while to realize that was the problem - I thought it wasn't working right.

Yes, with anything really - a paper towel, a shirt, a microfiber cloth. If my finger heat happens to touch the screen twice, this will happen. If I hold the cloth down hard, it won't happen.
With the screen off, if you hold down the Volume Down button for a few seconds the phone will open up in camera mode.

hi, i was bored and i put my desire z in my friends blackberry messenger case with a magnetic latch. when i pulled out my desire z, it seemed to have turned on. After further inspection, i found out that if you slide a magnet behind the desire z slowly, it will wake the device bypassing the lockscreen. I just wanted to share this with everyone
Be careful with that magnet I have a feeling that could really mess up your phone if its strong.

I don't think it would be that bad unless you had a really powerful one. The phone already has some sort of magnet or magnets in it. I'm a welder and have found steel filings bunched up all over the place on it.

well its a small magnet in a messenger case. i doubt that it would be strong enough to screw up my phone also i dont know if htc intentionally put a magnetic wake in their phones or not?
I have the same issue... and it wakes as the slider is opening.
Then the magnetic field probably interferes with the slider mechanism/sensor

This is not an issue. Also when your keyboard is open, your phone turns on because it senses that the mechanism is open/ moved. this is supposed to happen. htc designed it like this so people could text easier without having to push the power button

I think you didn't undertand my statement
My issue is: when I put my Desire Z over the magnetic case, it thinks the keyboard is opening (same as you described).
Also bypass the lockscreen, as the keyboard opening.
I know that when I open the slider the screen goes landscape, it obivious.... the issue is when it happens when it is not suposed to.
it could also depend on that the capacitive touchscreen works like this: when u put your finger on the screen and have contact with the metal backside of the phone the magnetic field of the screen is interrupted and recognizes where your finger are, maybe the magnet from the case makes the screen go haywire because of the magnet?
Just a theory..

no i dont think so. when i slide the magnet over the back of the phone, im grabbing the sides of the phone, not the screen or back.
I bought a smart cover off ebay, one reviewed here. I cant get that part to work. If there a system setting to enable it?
Thanks
I don't think so. Mine from Amazon just works.

The Nexus 7's lid sensor is on the bottom left about a 1.5" half up.
Check your cover's lid for a magnet in the same spot. Either the magnet isn't in the right spot, too weak, or just isn't there.
You can check the N7's sensor by holding a magnet over it.
you could get a paperclip and test the magnet on the smart cover as well :silly:

I have my play for a year now and it is in pretty bad state.... the construction quality is not the best...
and what more I care about is the power button because it is pretty much gone, I'm using apps to lock the screen and the home button to unlock...
found out that some one used a nail file to fix it, so I tried and it was better for the first 3 presses.... I noticed that the light was passing though the part I sanded down, so I did the same on the whole button.
I think It looks pretty cool and all the button lights up and catches more attention..
when its off, it is ice/transparent with the power icon in the middle...

I'm the kind of guy that has no limits, if I something cool, I keep doing it till it finishes bad... but not this time!! I sanded down the side that has no triggers and it looks like a very dark wood with a lovely texture on it... have to fell it...
Tip. Try to do it all ways in the same direction, along the side so that you have these tiny lines right. Or use a very smooth(?) /for more delicate things sand paper and don't put any pressure on it...

How can filing down the surface of a button make any difference to its responsiveness? surely the problem lies beneath the button with the connector?
I agree with you on the build quality. My power button hasn't gone yet but its probably on its way out. It didn't work at all a couple of days ago until I kept pressing it and luckily went back to normal normal responsiveness after that, can't be a good sign though. That and the R trigger on my device has lost its springiness, it goes down with little to no effort now. Still raises back to the surface so I suppose I should count myself lucky.
Looks cool anyway and might make it so the LED light can actually be seen in normal circumstances.
So if I sand down my power button it will make it do that? GENIUS. I never thought of that. Time to go find a nail filer.
Sweet. Going to try this in a few
I just tried it out, and the power button felt a bit weird so I licked my finger and got it a little wet, but with the case on you don't even feel it. But my god, it looks 100x better. Thank you dude.

I think the R button loses its springiness because of the way the phone is held. At least when I hold it its usually being pressed.

Not to go off topic again but I had to replace the back cover underneath the battery. As the triggers started to get sticky and not move as they looked liked they were pressed all the way down. So bought a new backing and bang... works like like new. Now.... back to our regular scheduled topic on hand.

Use something like this
You can find this on nail cutter or swiss army multipurpose knife. Gently scrub it on your power button. You can use sand paper also which you can find it on any hardware store, but I don't prefer sand paper because the sand will come off and run into your device

It's definitely not a battery issue, but it bothers me whenever the slightest tap sets off the clock popup. I don't think it's a case issue since I use a light-weight one (Poetic slim case). I would like to think that the context-processor responds to the disruption in the magnetic field which is why it's so sensitive. I can't test this though.....Does anyone happen to have a flip cover for the Moto X?

Turn the phone over so the screen is facing down. Problem solved.
I love it. I pick the phone up and just swipe to wake. Then with a Nova Launcher gesture (swipe up to toggle Quick Settings) and a custom Sleep tile in the bottom right thanks to GravityBox, I've probably cut my mashing on the power button by probably 95%. I barely have to touch it anymore.
I love the active display but it does annoy me when I'm driving. I stick it in the cup holder and every time the truck moves, the screen turns on and I can see it out of the corner of my eye. And I don't know if anyone else lives in PA, but trying to avoid the potholes and inevitably hitting one keeps the screen on almost the entire time...
I also found I now pick up my Nexus 7 expecting the screen to turn on automatically

Hahaha, I've done the same with my Galaxy Nexus and even my wife's Razr Maxx.
PA here too... and the potholes have become unbearable.
I really like the sensitivity... I think its great that it will pop on virtually anytime I move the phone, but not to the point of wasting my battery. I swear there have been times where I could just wave my hand over the phone and it would flick the time and lock up, but maybe it was just in my head.
I hear ya all on the Nexus 7 deal, I do the same from time to time, just expect it to turn on. Would be something easy for Google to add moving forward though.

Do you Assist app for driving? I've noticed that after I'm driving for a couple minutes the phone must turn down the active notifications as it won't turn on with little bumps. Sometimes it won't even turn on when I pick it up.
But sitting in my house, it'll turn on every time I bump it.
Cover the proximity sensor and it'll assume it's face down or in your pocket.
The proximity sensor is on ALL the time, and it is used in conjunction with the accelerometer to turn on the screen. If you don't want it to turn on in certain situations, do the above.
I cover it with my microfiber screen wiping cloth sometimes when I want it face up but without AN.
So here's a little video of me checking the time while sitting on the couch. Very frustrating. Any tips or fixes available to make it better?

Did a clean install when 5.1.1 came out... just upgraded to most recent fw but it's been like this since I upgraded to lollipop.
My Z3C never had this issue. DT2W works flawlessly but it's disabled on my phone because it was waking up too often while in my pocket
The thing is DT2W worked flawlessly on the first kitkat FW when this phone came out... After the upgrades you'll hv to move it like pick it up then it'll work properly. If you leave it on a flat surface for awhile and tap it without moving it then it'll be like in the OP's video.

It's the same for me. Worked very good on 4.4, now only with movement before on 5.0, 5.1. I think they tried to make it less sensitive to waking the screen in the pocket or something. Though not the best solution.

GravityBox has this "Proximity wake-up" feature.
The phone will never wake-up when the proximity sensor is covered (even when you use the power button instead of double-tap)

It seems the sensor is not used all the time. Maybe it is used only when there's an attempt to wake up the phone.
