Hello fellow xda users. I'd like to ask a question regarding battery usage while on active 3G/3.5G data. To be precise I'm looking into 3G tweaks so it doesn't drain 350-700mA while on 3G data, that kills battery very fast.
It would be great to find a compromise between performance and battery life.
I'm using Typhoon ROM atm. Also, I got very good signal reception, both with GSM/WCDMA
Also, can you report how much juice does your phone drain when browsing(actively using data trasnfer) ? Thanks!
The 3G is very hungry, i din't think anyone would fix this, just use 2G
2G is very slow though.
Shame there are no solutions to this.
3g drain my battery badly too. no solution?

Okay, so WiFi is usually better than 3G when it comes to battery life; but what about WiMax? I don't have a stable signal yet so I can't reliably test the two. What are ya'll experiences (for those within a reliable 4G area)? Better, the same, worse, or a lot worse?

I don't have reliable 4G in my area, but I notice that even turning on the wimax 4G radio dramatically drains my battery. Don't know if its becasue its constantly searching for signal or just becasue the radio is turned on. My 2 cents, but I know it's not very thorough..
Any time you have a radio turned on and do not have a signal it will drain the battery trying to find a signal.
If you go to an area with poor 3g service, your battery will drain crazy.
They are testing 4g in my area, so it is up and down a lot, so I cannot test.
From reading other posts, I believe 4g may take slightly more battery.
Since Froyo has been released, the 4G battery drain isn't nearly as bad as it was on 2.1. I've noticed that the speeds have substantially increased as well as better battery management as well.

Yeah, that's why I wanted to see how things are now. We all know how 4G got slammed by reviewers for killing the battery, but the new radio might have changed that. I'm just curious at how it compares to 3G now under ideal conditions (good signal).
I have full 4G coverage where I live and to be honest when 4G is on, the battery drainage difference is not much, when compared to 3G.
I have 4G in my area as well, but I leave it off because it goes back and forth from being connected to not being connected. I did notice last night that my battery went from 70% to 5% over night... Anyone know what could cause that?

I have the same problem. I'm in the Baltimore area and the 3G/4G switches back and forth. I figured out that when the phone isn't in 4G, it searches for a 4G connection, but you can put it to 3G only (with an app called Phone Info) until Verizon is done with their 4G coverage.
4G uses more power than 3g, which uses more power than wifi.
4g<3g<wifi.
it's significantly worse on 4G, so much so that I have an extended battery and I still don't use it.

there is something wrong with your phone then, maybe it's not sleeping. you should be noticing a huge difference.

I am noticing significantly worse battery life and slow 3g speed since moving to 2.6 both are voodoo. Just wandering if anyone else was experiencing this
I'm not having great battery life at all either. I work in a radiation area which is heavily shielded. I have found that turning data off from the notification menu solves this problem for me.
This leads me to believe there are some apps causing the issue. I haven't noticed anything regarding 3g though.

For me battery life is better on sc2.6(eb16 kernel) than it was on 2.5(eb01 kernel). Both were voodoo. And on 2.6 I get waaay faster 3g...

+1 for me as well.
have you guys wipe battery stats (not using cwm) and also use an app called juice defender?
My battery life decreased significantly when I switched from 2.4 to 2.6. I'm doing the battery state wipe process now. 3g speeds don't seem to be any different for me. I am running Juice Defender too.
Did you try 2.7?
Having a similar issue with my wife's phone now.. SC2.4, and the battery is just drianing. I read some stuff about GPS keeping the phone awake, and turning it off for a couple minutes, then back on and going into maps/lattitude and it sleeping finnaly with GPR still on. I found this to be true, but it doesn't seem to last. So, I'm puzzled and in the doghouse for bad battery life. lol
Hi experts,
I have a HD2, running HyperDroid CM7 v3.0.1 (based on Android 2.3.5). I MUST have 3G/2G always on, as I receive push notifications from WhatsApp, CNN, WordsWithFriends, etc. Also, I have disabled all background automatic syncing for all my apps (confirmed by 3G Watchdog Pro). I am a medium-heavy HD2 user.
Currently, my standby battery drain is 11-15 mA (measured by Battery Monitor Widget). The original battery does'nt last me a day.
I had installed JuiceDefender for a week ... but, it showed no improvement in battery life (with customised settings, to take into account my above requirements). I uninstalled it yesterday.
Can I improve my battery life under these circumstances ? I need my battery to last about 3-4 hours more ... so, that I can charge it just once a day every evening. I don't want the extended battery with the ugly hump.
I had searched the forum ... but, could'nt find an answer for my situation.
Thanx in advance.
cheers,
- manish
PS. Mods: Apologies for the double posting .... I later realized, I would get a better response in this sub-forum.
You can use only 2g network instead of 3g which will save energy.

I need my 3G connection for faster loads while working on my HD2.
I have read in posts on this forum that some users are getting a standby battery drain of 2-7 mA with data on and, sometimes, WiFi on !!!!! Any tips from these users how to reduce standy battery drain ? Or, other tips to enhance battery life ?
cheers,

Hey xda,
I know that doing a few full drain/charge cycles helps improve battery life when using a new phone, but are there other things that I should consider doing to help improve the longevity/performance of the phone?
I am completely stoked about getting this nexus and I plan on keeping it for awhile. I'm sure others will feel the same.
Thanks.

Yup do the battery thing (though this isn't as big of a deal as it used to be with older battery technologies).
The next most dramatic thing could be custom ROMs / Kernels that give greater control over power management, and keeping tabs on any apps that might be unnecessarily wasting battery.
Stay on WiFi as much as possible, switch to 2G only if you don't care about data speed (i.e., you're only getting push notifications while driving or something).
So WiFi consumes less battery than data?

Yeah. When you're on WiFi, your phone doesn't bother with using the mobile data (which consumes more power to use).
I think power consumption depends more on the strength of the signal. If your phone has weak Wi-Fi signal for instance, then continually trying to reconnect will use more power then a strong data connection.

Weak signals in general will do this - it's worse with having a weak cell signal.
Hi guys!
I have this annoying problem.
I have mi S5 since February. I love it. Great battery and everything. My problem is that where I work I have a awful signal strength. 3G works when it wants and 4G, I measure 3 or 4 Mb/s, so you can see, it's pretty awful too, just a bar or even no bars of signal. I sometimes use my work's wifi, but we are so many people using it that it's the same, sometimes it doesn't even work.
Well, the problem is that this signal problem drains my battery terribly faster . Today it went from something like 65% at 10AM to 7% in 4 hours using a bit of FB.
When I get home, whereI have good signal strength, I can go to like a day and a half, 2 days on a single charge.
Is there anything I can do to solve this problem? It's really annoying because I know that the battery is good and it should last way longer....
Thanks in advance!

Hello,
You can obviously stop the data at work. It is a bit extreme but will for sure save your battery
You can also choose to restrict data to 3G it might help.

To be happy I should stop data and wifi, but I need it because of Whatsapp.
In fact, the problem is 3G AND 4G, both of them
Well, there's no magic solution....
Thanks!
