New International S3 - Getting Started - Galaxy S III General

Hi,
I now have a Galaxy S3. Long story short, my Transformer Pad Infinity was awesome but was falling apart due to the quality control of ASUS. And coming from that forum to this one, its a huge difference and this is obviously way more popular. Now I have a few questions regarding my Galaxy S3 which is awesome so far btw. I have had a look around the forums and these are the questions that I have thought of plus a few of my own.
#1. Battery life: Its only had 3 charges but I haven't gone right down to about 0 yet. Is it the same as my tablet and will require a few charge cycles before I get my full charge capacity or am I expecting to much coming from a wi-fi only device?
#2. I just saw this grey notification bar thing today and how it is supposed to reduce screen burn on the screen. I am not worried about it changing to black but is the screen burn going to actually get that bad. I am planning on keeping this phone for probably about 2 years depending on money but I would like to think I am safe from the screen becoming ****.
#3. Is there a way to basically eliminate touchwizz without rooting or unlocking. I mean like replace the settings and launcher and lockscreen. I did root and unlock my Transformer Infinity too soon and that caused me to run into trouble with warranty so I would like to hang on a bit before I unlock this device to run some awesome ROMs.
#4. Any real tips or tricks or must haves for the S3 that I should have?
I think I had more questions which I may ask later but this is what came to my head at the moment.
Thanks,
Andrew

Oh yes, that other problem is that most of my apps seem to be going off the network time which is wrong. 13 hours wring in facy and not my phone time. Any ideas for that one?

#1: I think so. The battery should become more stable and give you full battery life after a couple drain/charge cycles.
#2: I had my captivate for well over a year and never saw any "screen burn". It can be an issue but I think you'll be safe for the time you have your phone. 2 years shouldn't be a problem at all.
#3: You can change the launcher.. there are some that don't require root.
#4: Take advantage of the NFC and maybe check out S3's exclusive accessories. Not really a must have but the dongle is nothing short of awesome!
..Congrats! And wrong section btw. This belongs in q&a

Thanks for the feedback and sorry, I think this would have been a general topic in the Infinity thread, used to the old ways. As for some of the acsessories the international one doesn't get the tectiles unfortunately but I believe they might just be NFC stickers available almost anywhere.

If you don't get any replies elsewhere, try coming to the General Thread. It's where we have the real fun.

A thought on the network time issue, have you change the time zone to be the timezone for Eastern Standard time? That might fix the issue. If not you should be able to turn the network time off in the settings (under date and time), I have to do this because Vodafone don't send me the time.

Yes that was my issue, thanks

The battery you need to let it gone down to zero and full charge a few times before you can get max power.

A long time myth for me which i have always been unsure about is is it OK to let it charge overnight. I have heard heat is what kills these batteries and heat is produced during charging. I think everyone does it but would just like to be sure.

It is definietly not true for this type of batery. No calibration needed. None at all. Period.

And you haven't seen much of decrease in battery life? Also just ran the screen through a colour test and I notice on black it shows up as having darker blotches only visible in low light but would this be a sign of something to come? And the last niggle i hope to fix us the slowish WiFi. Pretty sire my infinity was quicker and it had more pixels to render for. Other than that, loving the phone.
P.S. turns out dark spots are common on AMOLED

A warning to all those buying a Nexus S (Screen and battery problems)

I thought I'd share some hopefully helpful information with you guys after having to have 2 swap outs of my Nexus S after getting it on launch day.
I had done an awful lot of reading prior to getting my Nexus to make sure I was pretty clued up about any potential launch bugs which seem to plague a number of handsets these days.
The first thing I noticed with my first phone was the unusually fast battery drain and long charge times, I could hardly go through daylight hours without my phone needing charge (Battery indicator showing orange or red). The following night I left the phone with 55% charge and went to sleep. When I woke up the phone was off, strange I thought; turns out it had eaten the rest of the battery over night.
The final straw came when I reset the phone to default settings (thinking it was a rogue app causing the drain) and it still ate the battery within a day. At this point I knew something was up, especially as reviewers were commenting that the battery seemed considerably better than a lot of other Android handsets.
I decided to take it back to Best Buy to get a swap out, long story short the sales rep. tested the battery and told me that it was defective. He then said he would swap out just the handset and battery with another unit, great I thought!
My relief was soon disturbed when I realised something wasn't right with the screen on my new handset. Not only was the screen a pee yellow colour (compared with the cool temperature of the original) there was also significant banding within the grey area of the the pull down notification tray. These problems had also been mentioned on the Engadget review and even if they hadn't I'm pretty sure I still would have noticed it straight away regardless.
After another trip back to Best Buy and a reluctant second swap out on their part, I have what seems like a fully working handset with a good battery and decent AMOLED panel.
I don't know what's happening with Samsung's QC or whether they have large tolerances for their panels, but I would have thought that they would have been able to iron a lot of this out having already launched the Galaxy S series.
A slightly long post but I hope this at least saves some of you the hassle I've been through to get a decent handset. This isn't the first time it's happened either, I had problems with my launch day iPhone 4 with the mic not working.
One thing's for sure, I'm going to be far more vigilant when buying my next handset.
also test ur buttons because they can be loose and the back button sometimes has problems
nothing new for samsung QA
Unfortunately, having come from the epic, this seems par for the course for sammy..I'd high hopes Google would counter this, but I guess not. My first and only ns is wonderful, though I ordered online and it seems the majority of complaints are coming from those that ordered at the store..coincidence?

Sadly, Google != Apple, they don't produce their own hardware. Depending on Samsung, with their known ****ty QA is a risk I'm sure they weighed.
I ordered my NS online and have none off theses issues! Actually my battery life is AWESOME. 16 hours straight between charging. I love it!

3G supported band
Guys,
Some thing out of the topic, but i need to ask is that is there any sort of 3G band limitation in US version of NS? My friend in Canada told me that currently all devices are coming only with AWS support for 3G which is supported by limited number of Cellular Operators.
Any ideas?

Having the same battery problem, please help
I am also having the same battery problem. It seems like the battery drains 1% per minute. I need to keep it charging all the time or it will drain in about 90 minutes. And it takes 8-9 hours to charge it to 100%.
Problem is I can't just take it back to Best Buy since I live overseas and a friend brought it to me from the US. So now what do I do?
1. Is it the battery or the phone? If it is the battery then I can just replace the battery, but I can't find anywhere online to buy the same battery? Any ideas?
2. If it is the phone, is there anything I can do w/o having to send it back to the USA?
Thanks so much for your help!

Thanks but this seller won't ship outside the USA. I found a bunch of similar ones on eBay, but they are all 1440 milliamps and not 1500 milliamps.
Not sure if the one on Amazon is 1440 or 1500.

[Q] Nova Launcher. Battery life hit?

Anyone notice a considerable battery life hit using Nova launcher?
I'm just failing to see how anyone can quote 9hrs life web browsing, more realistically its 5 or 6 tops usage.
Is that down to using Nova launcher or is that just how it is with the Nex 7?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I think it uses about 3% looking at my stats
I was getting 9hours battery life, however after recently installing CM10 Kang rom is now get between 12 and 13 hours.
nova wouldn't be a noticeable hit on battery, I can get over 2 days on battery with 6hrs screen on time, I use nova on phone and tablet.
Sent from my Nexus 7
I'm using nova launcher and I don't have battery issues. I gene really get 2-3 days out of a charge
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I have 5 hours of screen on, enough left for probably another 2 hours, and Nova Launcher isn't even listed as it has used so little. Far more has been used by games. It wasn't listed even after an hour or so of setting up my screens and widgets, which required a lot of testing and fiddling around in Nova.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Just unlucky I guess. I'll never see six hours screen time with any launcher. Doh
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Im using nova and typically get about 6 hours of web browing(judged by screen on time). Nova never shows up on my battery usage list so it's not much of a hit for me. I am just unimpressed with the battery life . Google couldn't just come out and say 6 hours, so they lied and said 10 while web browsing? I have yet to see anyone besides cnet say they got 10 hours of on time with one charge. I would like to see some more people get stirred up about this. Apple managed to put out a device that can do 10 hours of true web browsing. So it can be done.
I'm using a cm10 kang build as well. Maybe I will go back to stock for a few days just to see....
Nova doesn't even show up on my battery use. I use my Nexus 7 for reading ebooks, probably about 80% of the time, on battery. I figure that I can go around 12 hours before I need to start looking for a plug in.

Is your nexus stock unrooted?
Are you using widgets, live widgets, live wallpaper, or any kind of battery saving or task managers/automated app killers? Is your GPS enabled? Have you tried turning off sync services that you don't need, disabling GPS and location services when you aren't using them, or turning off screen transitions and animations?

True, I see about the same with mine, but Wifi is off, and Google claims 10 hours of browsing. I would even settle for 8 hours at this point. Still need to just try stock i guess. Bored today so I Will try it out.

Most likely your battery drain is not caused by Nova Launcher.
Did you look into any of these suggestions?

I had some pretty bad battery drain too, until a few days ago I figured out that it was caused by Google's location service being on, preventing the CPU from going into deep-sleep mode.
Try this, Arthur Hucksake:
1. Go into the settings => Location services => turn all three options (Google's location service, GPS sattelites, Location & Google search) off
2. Go into the settings => Wi-Fi => Menu (the three dots) => Advanced => Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep => Only when plugged in
3. Go into the settings of each widget (or its corresponding app) and change the update interval to the bare minimum or to manual, so that the widget/app doesn't continuously update itself.
=> The above settings help to make sure that the CPU can switch into deep-sleep mode when the screen is off and the tablet in standby mode. Otherwise continuous updates/checks of an app would prevent the deep-sleep mode and hence cause battery drain.
=> Useful apps to find out which apps are causing battery drain and whether the CPU can switch into deep-sleep mode are:
- CPU Spy
- Better Battery Stats

Gave my rooted Stock Nexus a try, not much better, I barely got 7.5 hours of browsing, a little bit of flash player and maybe 30 minutes of HW decoded HD video. Pretty crappy if you ask me. I mean I drained this down to 1% from 100%. Used some of the apps suggested here and nothing really jumps out as a culprit, just looks like bad power management or bad battery to me.

Speaking of Nova. On my 2 day old HTC One, which ibwant to keep and not return for the S4, it lists Nova as number 1. Taking up 40% of battery usage (not sure of your terminology)
Anyone have any clue for me. I liked Apex and someone said they got better results. For me, Apex has been lagging and for some reason it won't take a Jorte widget.
what's worse when plugged in, every phone in the past has charged while being used plugged in. This doesn't move AT ALL and even goes down a point or 2 every so often.
Thanks in advance for any help

You have a few things going on. First, you revived and hijacked a zombie. Second, you're in the wrong device-specific forum. Third, when you post your issue in the correct device-specific forum, you may want to give folks some more info to go on such as what you're using to charge your phone and if it's indicating that it's charging on AC or USB.
Real Helpful
Not really feeling good about "wger I am". If you don't have anything to help, say nothing. Would have been better to leave a note in here for the mod to move this.

You were given constructive advice on how to succeed in your query. You were helped by being pointed in the right direction and informed that you will need to provide more info once you get there. You're set for success, but whether or not you choose to follow it through is entirely up to you.
It is a fact that a very small subset of users in this sub-forum have any first-hand experience with the HTC One and that your odds of getting the answer you seek is exponentially higher in that device's sub-forum. Likewise, it also holds true that, in order to receive an accurate answer to your issue, you'll need to provide more info. Think of it as being akin to walking into a doctor's office and proclaiming "I'm sick" without providing any other information. In order to treat you, he/she also needs to know relevant info, such as what symptoms you're experiencing. The same holds true here- in order to accurately address your issue, they're going to need to know relevant info such as what power source you're plugged into and whether your phone indicates it is charging on AC or USB.
And it actually wouldn't have been better to have a mod move it. It's far less cumbersome for all involved if you would simply copy and paste your question as a new thread in the HTC One forum than it would be for someone to report your post, a mod to respond to that report, prune it out of this thread, and then create an entirely new thread in the appropriate forum.

Definitely give the original a try. Not all usb cables are created equally. To enable charging at a current higher than 500mA (the usb standard), the power management integrated circuit of the device checks for a short between the d+ and the d- pins. Some oems short the contacts at the charger whereas others short them inside the cable.

[OFF-TOPIC] Galaxy SII Hangout Thread

Hi guys, I'm new to this part of the forum coming from a Desire S.
The Desire S forum was a really nice place to be, so I decided to set up an OFF-TOPIC thread. It turned out very well, and is a great place where I made friends and learned tips and advice for both my device and other things in life.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1611085
I would like to try it here. I hope this thread will also help to cut down the number of OT post in other threads. (as it has done it the Desire S forum)
Basically, this thread serves as a place for any discussion, for fellow GSII users to hangout! Feel free to talk about anything!
So let's go! How about we start by introducing ourselves?
Great lets get started

The only thing i cld complain really at this point is the screen (just resolution, not colours, viewing angles or anything else)
The gpu is still a beast, you can see that if Sammy choose to put same GPU in s3 which is high-end device.
CPU,very nice indeed, no need to talk about chipset anyway, its gonna hold well for solid ammount of time to come.
Anyway. Im 25yo Croatian male, nice to meet you all fellow XDA members.

Perfect thread to talk about what happened to my phone this morning.
So I'm usually not the guy that charges his phone overnight and takes it off the charger the next morning, cuz I get paranoid something is gonna happen.
Well I fell asleep last night while the phone was on the charger. When I picked up my phone this morning it was FREAKIN HOT (I mean hotter then it has ever gotten before) and the battery was drained pretty low.
Turned out that my AC adapter went defective overnight and fortunately I had a different AC handy to replace and troubleshoot.
Crazy thing is that everybody else I know charges their phone overnight too. IDK maybe it's just me *sigh* lol...

I too charge my phone over night and don't experience that problem. Although, once it did happen to me when I had my xperia ray(never Sony again), but that was due to keeping it under my pillow all night while charging.
Did u have yours under your pillow while it was charging?:what:

A quick question to you guys:
On average how much screen on like do you manage on your phone with around medium brightness?
I'm getting just over 3 hours, but I'm wondering if I should be getting more. My battery is 1 year old already, so it may have already lost its full capacity.
I'm also swaying between the Anker 1900mah and Official 2000mah. Ideally i'd like to keep the same battery cover.
Any thoughts?

Hi guys,
This is my first post here in XDA. I'm a noob or, what sometimes is the same, a demon or something...The funny thing is that i've been a member for a long time (2007) but having nothing to say, just read...so it'd be kinda odd if someone's call me noob...hahahhaha
Being using a Galaxy S2 for a year and I think is one of the best smartphones ever made. Even a year later remains one of the most powerful...and with CM10 I'm happier of having it...
I've read a lot of threads and discussions, and it's nice to read and write in a thread like this.
Thank you so much olyloh6696.
Greetings from Madrid.
Sorry for my english..
Hi guys.....any problems that might pop out I will try and solve although i am not as active as I used to....
....an 18 year old from Malta...happy to meet you all.
Great thread.
Well I too keep my phone charging overnight. Ok from this does anyone know is it possible to keep phone in aeroplane mode yet access wifi? An app or tasker script would really help. I want to stay connected to wifi so as to be able to download stuff overnight.

[Q] Nexus 4 on order, arrival soon, what can I expect ;) ?

So, they have apparently sorted out the stock and supply problem. I <cough> borrowed the wife's credit card and have placed the order.
They say it will ship in 1 to 2 weeks, I can live with that.
The light-hearted question I have is, once I've gotten over the excited rush of playing with the phone for a while, what have your experiences been? Good or bad! I've heard that the battery life is not great but to be honest I am not so bothered with that. I have a charger and work, and home, in the car - I can even charge it at the pub/bar I go to
Keep an eye out for issues worthy of an RMA. From there, the only thing to expect is awesomeness. You'll want to calibrate the screen color and gamma, though.
Has battery life been that bad? Because I just ordered one myself to replace my wife's 3GS.

yes battery life is very bad on this device. in sleep/standby its great. but when you do something, it drains battery very fast. just 5minutes use and at least 10% are gone.

Utter tripe. You either have a rouge app, or you have the brighness turned up full or something else stupid.
I easily get a full day out mine with moderate use. It's about 50%-60% remaining when I get home in the evening from work.
I got around 3 hours of screen on time and a full 18-20 hours standby on stock rom with the usual useage of whatsapp and gmail syncing, with web use and texting etc, and now on custom rom, I am getting up to 4.5 hours screen on.
So, battery is good, phone is super fast and smooth, camera is great if you take time to learn how to use it and especially with HDR on and a bit of post picture editing. Only down side is music volume and quality which is average at best. In my opinion.
Thanks for the feedback. I just hope my wife can make the transition from iOS to android.
I think depending whether you are on WiFi or HSPA will make a huge difference for battery. From what I understand, when using HSPA, the standby battery life is horrible.
The screen is usually the single biggest threat to your battery. And the N4 can get 4-6 hours of "screen on" time depending on use. As others have said, it can be on standby for 15+ hours, but you can completely kill the battery in 4 hours or less if you are using a cpu intensive app.
Custom roms and battery saving apps can def help out though.
I ordered mine at 3pm on wednesday and it was with me by 3pm on thursday .. so slightly quicker than the 1-2 weeks they quote!
Unlock the boot loader, doesn't matter if you decide on staying stock or what. Having your boot loader unlocked right of the bat allows you to keep your apps if you do decide to root /flash.

You'll sadly probably find that the screen is *uneven* in it's tint (yellow probably) and brightness. Because it's uneven, "calibrating" will help a little maybe but will not fix any issues with the screen. On the other hand, with luck (which I wish you) you may find that your screen is pretty much perfectly uniform in brightness and tone top to bottom, left to right. (Check using the Mail app and minimise the keyboard) I've had 5 so far and none of them are acceptable to me. Otherwise the phone is truly incredible in use. Buttery smooth, responsive, great. The screen very generally is amazing too. It's just not even as it should be. Let me know how yours is - i'd be interested to know because if yours has good uniformity I'll order another. Good luck!

Well expect battery drain issues (msm_hsic_host wakelock).

[S4 Active]- So my phone started freezing up on me yesterday...

My experience with my S4A has been amazingly flawless up until yesterday, when it started experiencing one of the issues that killed my experience with the HTC One- random freezes. And what's strange about it is that they are the same type of freezes that my One experienced, only when browsing the web or using an internet based app like Pulse. It has happened 3 times since yesterday and is so bad that I've had to pull the battery to even get it to reboot. Which brings me to one of my suspicions...
The only thing that has changed between me getting the phone set up originally and when the freezes began was the fact that I started swapping batteries instead of charging the phone. Now, phone batteries nowadays are not just like your average AA cell, it has circuitry in it and NFC stuff... is it possible that a defective battery could be the culprit of my woes? I just put in my original battery and am gonna just wait and see if it happens. The other battery that I've been using is a Samsung OEM battery and not a cheap one. I did root and freeze a bunch of stuff, but nothing exotic, and it was fine until yesterday. I doubt anything I did caused this.
Has anyone else experienced any freezes like this? Help me solve this, I really want to keep this phone (at least until the next latest and greatest comes out). TIA

Mine started Sunday. All it would do is hang at the ATT logo on reboot. I ended up doing a factory reset and it hasn't happened since. Certainly made me suspect the rooting I did...

What did you do to your phone after rooting?
A couple of times now my active has become unresponsive. The power button doesn't seem to work and the home key doesn't do anything. The led is flashing blue and the battery is still about 35%. The only thing I can do is pull the battery.
Not sure if this is related to your question but I'm going to try to get it replaced...

Didn't really do anything drastic- Titanium Backup and froze some att crap. Nothing even remotely close to system apps.

My LED never starts flashing but like yours, none of the buttons respond and I have to do a battery pull. I really don't want to have to get it replaced, and I really don't want to wipe and start over, just don't have the time right now to do either. Did you do anything to yours? Root?

Same here. Nothing I froze should have any affect on system stability.
I Haven't had any issues since I've had the phone, going on 3 weeks. I've been rooted and have froze apps in TB with no problems since geohot gave us root. Also have done some other root mods, and have not experienced any issues.
Sounds like just some bad hardware circulating.

Man I REALLY hope it's not a hardware issue. I'm so tired of doing the repeated exchange thing. I went through 5 One X's before I found a suitable one, saw that pattern emerging with the One (had 2, both with same issues) and was really hoping the S4A was going to be the answer to my woes. I really love this phone but if it ends up being a hardware thing, I will be incredibly disheartened.

Any way to tell the build dates of our phones? Maybe we could narrow it down to a certain production date.

I dunno... My box is in another state so I won't be able to check it for a few weeks. I bought it on the very first day it was available if that helps any. On a side note, I put my original battery in last night and it hasn't locked up on me since. We'll see what happens by the end of the day.

I am rooted but that's pretty much it.
The only thing I know I was doing at the time was watching a YouTube video then pressed pause.
Next thing you know I picked it up hit the power... Nothing. Hit menu... Nothing. The blue LED was just the normal notification indicator, so I knew it hadn't powered off... Resulted in a battery pull.
I also know that I didn't get any messages or new notifications while the screen was off.

I ALWAYS have issues restoring from titanium backup, esp going from one phone to another. My suggestion is to factory reset and start with a clean slate, cas only then can u verify a hardware issue.

I know on the Captivate the Build Number could be found under the battery (can be found there on the S4A as well) and it was the year/month that the phone was built, or so they say. My S4A Build number is 1306 so I'm guessing it was built the beginning of June...

I would like to know if you have had any more problems since you put your original battery back in? If you could give a update I would really appreciate it. I really think the active is a great phone and I truly like it but if people are having a lot of issues with it, I'll just return it and get something else to save myself a headache down the road. I have a week left on my return date so that's why I was wanting to know.

gf has had similar issues; heres what fixed it.
battery pull
factory reset/restore
reboot
battery pull
reboot
root/etc/restore from there. check to make sure you dont have custom CPU voltage/speed mods enabled; i believe this was the initial culprit, though even after resetting them to stock it would still lock up. it only did it 3 times, and usually right after a new mod, but ONLY if CPU values were changed. after the above procedure, she redid all her cpu values but only AFTER all mods were installed, rebooted, and everything works great again.

Same problems no matter which battery. It seems to happen most when I'm using Chrome so I deleted the updates but it's still doing it. It happened while playing a game today which it's never done before. Next step is to freeze Chrome and see if that helps. If not, then I'm gonna factory reset and if that doesn't work, I'm gonna have to exchange it. I really did not want to have to deal with this. With my ridiculous work schedule I don't have the time or the energy. I might just start looking for a different phone because I'm sick of having issues like this.

I would say if the factory reset does not work than it is the phone itself. I had issues like this in the past with my old infuse and I did a factory reset and it took care of it. Hopefully that will help you out so you can keep your phone. Thanks for replying.

Yeah bud, I really hope a reset works. I might do it tomorrow, I should have enough time. I'm just frustrated that I'm having identical issues with the S4A that I had on my One. I was really hoping to find a phone that just works. I don't think I've had a problem free phone since my Epic 4G Touch. My One X had issues (though my 5th one was near perfect), my iPhone 5 was horrible, both my Ones had problems, and now this. I'm just venting now but I'm seriously tired of it. I've got my eye on that new Sony i1 that's coming out in a couple months, I really love their current design choices and I've never tried a Sony before. Or maybe the next Nexus. Who knows. I just don't want to deal with this crap anymore.
