[Q] Nexus 4 on order, arrival soon, what can I expect ;) ? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, they have apparently sorted out the stock and supply problem. I <cough> borrowed the wife's credit card and have placed the order.
They say it will ship in 1 to 2 weeks, I can live with that.
The light-hearted question I have is, once I've gotten over the excited rush of playing with the phone for a while, what have your experiences been? Good or bad! I've heard that the battery life is not great but to be honest I am not so bothered with that. I have a charger and work, and home, in the car - I can even charge it at the pub/bar I go to

Keep an eye out for issues worthy of an RMA. From there, the only thing to expect is awesomeness. You'll want to calibrate the screen color and gamma, though.

Has battery life been that bad? Because I just ordered one myself to replace my wife's 3GS.

yes battery life is very bad on this device. in sleep/standby its great. but when you do something, it drains battery very fast. just 5minutes use and at least 10% are gone.

Utter tripe. You either have a rouge app, or you have the brighness turned up full or something else stupid.
I easily get a full day out mine with moderate use. It's about 50%-60% remaining when I get home in the evening from work.

I got around 3 hours of screen on time and a full 18-20 hours standby on stock rom with the usual useage of whatsapp and gmail syncing, with web use and texting etc, and now on custom rom, I am getting up to 4.5 hours screen on.
So, battery is good, phone is super fast and smooth, camera is great if you take time to learn how to use it and especially with HDR on and a bit of post picture editing. Only down side is music volume and quality which is average at best. In my opinion.

Thanks for the feedback. I just hope my wife can make the transition from iOS to android.

I think depending whether you are on WiFi or HSPA will make a huge difference for battery. From what I understand, when using HSPA, the standby battery life is horrible.

The screen is usually the single biggest threat to your battery. And the N4 can get 4-6 hours of "screen on" time depending on use. As others have said, it can be on standby for 15+ hours, but you can completely kill the battery in 4 hours or less if you are using a cpu intensive app.
Custom roms and battery saving apps can def help out though.

I ordered mine at 3pm on wednesday and it was with me by 3pm on thursday .. so slightly quicker than the 1-2 weeks they quote!

Unlock the boot loader, doesn't matter if you decide on staying stock or what. Having your boot loader unlocked right of the bat allows you to keep your apps if you do decide to root /flash.

You'll sadly probably find that the screen is *uneven* in it's tint (yellow probably) and brightness. Because it's uneven, "calibrating" will help a little maybe but will not fix any issues with the screen. On the other hand, with luck (which I wish you) you may find that your screen is pretty much perfectly uniform in brightness and tone top to bottom, left to right. (Check using the Mail app and minimise the keyboard) I've had 5 so far and none of them are acceptable to me. Otherwise the phone is truly incredible in use. Buttery smooth, responsive, great. The screen very generally is amazing too. It's just not even as it should be. Let me know how yours is - i'd be interested to know because if yours has good uniformity I'll order another. Good luck!

Nexus S battery

Hi did anyone experiance this kind of battery consumption? 3days 14hours and 45min and still have like 7%?
Not personally, I use my phone too much to get that kind of life out of it. Based on what I know about the drain when it's screen off and sleeping, though, I think it's well within the realm of possibility with light use.
I get like 24 hours out of mine... with some light-moderate use... used to be better when I bought it but then after installing some apps it just starts degrading a bit I guess
Well, rechargable batteries do degrade over time, and the more apps you have on a device, generally the less time it will last on battery, partially because those that run in the background consume more system resources and partially because those that update data in the background will keep your phone "awake" more of the time.
If I wasn't using my phone and just let it idle (sync on, airplane mode off) I'd get like 12 days of battery life. That's what I like about the NxS, unlike other smartphones it does actually last longer when not used.
hi
i am getting around 10 to 12 hours. wifi always on. mostly watching youtube videos. netbrwosing. gaming.
2g phone calling
still i think i am getting reasonably good back up

That's no issue, but working as intended.
Other phones are using the same technique, but they are hiding it by showing the 100% the phone never reached, that's why they drop to 95-97%ish right after unplugging and from there drain normally.
I experienced battery drowning after using app's like maps or latitude. I had to kill them manually, now I'm cleaning the phones memory regularly. That safes a lot of battery life for me on the one hand, but on the other hand loading app's isn't as fast as before.
It's the classical trade-off between battery life an usability. And 10-12 hours are normal for me if I'm using my phone a lot.

Please help?

So I just bought the Nexus 10 a day ago and I'm worried about a few things. The device gets hot/warm under minimal usage like browsing Chrome near the rear camera. It also seems that the battery life is terrible, like four hours to go from 80% to 0% with light usage. Also I've noticed that the screen randomly flashed brightly once or twice when it was turned down pretty low. Does anyone think this is cause for worrying or is it normal? Thank you for any answers.

Mine never gets warm with light usage. Sounds like you should call Google and RMA it. Look up Google play contact, and call their number

I don't think so.. but I have a case on it now and the camera is the only exposed area. I don't think it gets warm from normal usage, but probably if I play a video or game. Then again, climate varies (also temp of hands affects heat perception). But next time I use it for an hour or more I'll take the case off and feel it.
Unfortunately I haven't done much testing on battery. I did run it down once to 20 percent once, I forget how long it took. But I'm sure it's longer than 4 hours.
What is your display?
And what does it say under battery? Usually screen should be main eater of battery unless intense apps are being used.

Ok, I was just worried something was wrong.

The One has the best standby battery life of any phone EVER.

I swear this thing does nothing when on standby. Screen on time is at just over two hours and yet the stats are amazing. Interestingly I'm on my third one, the other two were NOTHING like this.

Couldn't agree more... I am only on the first "One" . But battery life is fantastic compared to my S3. My current stats are showing 54% remaining after 26:25 hours. Estimated remaining time is 33 hours. That's with a little bit of 4G usage and 30 minutes talk time. Total screen time is showing at 1.03 hours.
By this time of the day, with similar usage, by S3 was sitting under 50% and would remain for another 6 hours. I was originally very worried about the non-removable battery, but with performance like this I am no longer worried!

My 1st unit was AMAZING, just like the screenshot in 1st post, i could go a full day at work with 80%+...now ive got my replacement unit I noticed the difference straight away
In about 30 mins im losing like 10%+ even on standby
My old phone I saw well over 1d 15 hours on battery before i saw it go into abotu 15% battery...win some lose some.
However I am getting another replacement...fingers crossed

No offence, but the Xperia Z is better. The One may be good, but it's not the very best.
It has really good battery life considering the 1080 p screen and those dual speakers with boom sound.
Guys please consider the battery to note 2, it is a phablet with a gigantic battery. It somewhat like comparin nexus 7 with HTC one, difference between the n7 and note 2 screen size is only 1.5 inches

Best standby I have ever seen on a phone is the iphone5 to be honest. But the One definitely isn't far behind.
For me coming from an iPhone 5 and before that iPhone 4 and before that numerous other phones..this HTC one has been the best for battery life by far. I'm averaging battery life of 17 hours according to gsam battery app... I never would have imagined getting battery life like that and I am not on power saving mode. And as for the note 2. I would hope it bas better battery...it's not that much bigger (screen) and it has a 3100mah battery compared to 2300 in the one.

I'm lucky to get 8 hours. I'm not impressed at all. I had to charge it twice just to able to do some photography.
My recent past phones were an iPhone 5, galaxy s3, and note 2. Only the 5 had worse battery.
I have undervolted, have lte off and It drains fast when the screen is on. Who cares about standby. How does it actually last with use.
the battery has been very inconsistent for me ever since i got the phone a few weeks ago. sometimes i can go the entire day just fine and other times i need to charge by 6 pm. it definitely wouldnt last an extra day if i forgot to charge it before going to bed.

I don't have any hard evidence but this phone kills my Sensation. I would use about 1 hours of actual usage in a day while the rest of the time is in standby with wifi, and I can get through my 8 hour day with about 60% to 70% left. My sensation would have been near 20%, and I have to charge it if I use it more often. I am really impressed.
Mazzstrikers said:
No idea why you are here, bashing the One. HTC has had a bad reputation for notorious battery life, but the One is clearly solid in this aspect. Do not generalise based on HTC's past phones. Not sure about the Note 2 or S4 but I am darn sure my standby and screen on times beat my friend's S3 for good.

My One also handily beat my friends' S3 and iPhone 4S as well. I have never used a phone which I didn't worry about the battery near the end of the day - this is the first.
Mazzstrikers said:
Erm yup that seems more fair. I also didn't claim One has the best battery life. I mean the term "best" is entirely arbitrary. The best battery life on an android would definitely be the Razr Maxx. It'd probably handle close to twice the standby times on the S4.
So in that case why are you so eager to prove that the S4 is better than the One? I mean if you really feel it's better go ahead and buy one. Point proven.
For me and the other One users here we are VERY satisfied with our battery life, thank you very much.

I already have one. I am here to present unbiased facts, while some people seem to be blinded by ignorance. As previously stated I was in the market for an additional device for my fiance, and the One came up. Also if you actually read thru the responses from the One users, there is a lot of mixed responses not just praise.

I have the S3 as well as the One and my S3 and my One have approx similar screen on times but the S3 has longer total up-times with similar screen on time. With the H1, u need power saving on ALL the time to get decent battery life.
The S4 will eat up this phone in terms of battery life.
Getting back to my original point, the H1 does NOT have the best battery life ever of any phone.

I see my display is using 60% of battery.. The brightness display setting is set at auto 80%. I checked auto but it seems to keep what ever % that I have even when auto is checked? What brightness setting do you have set?
Thanks again
That is a base brightness when auto is checked. Set it lower. I tend to keep mine 35%.
That looks terrible. Im at 48% with 3+ hrs screen on time. And 7+ hrs expected left. I have my brightness at 33 most of the day. Also second day with the phone.
I would be a bit worried unless you have your brightness cranked and all setting checked on...

Auto bright doesn't really work on this phone. LG can't get it right. How long was your screen on, and what do you have on in the background? GPS? Bluetooth? WiFi? If your screen was on most of the time, that's pretty spot on.

What are you expecting out of your phone? Screen burns most of the battery. Even the g2 doesn't have that much battery strength. Hell, most phablets don't. I get 5 hours of life on 40% brightness, heavy usage, screen on most of the time.
I'm not saying it isn't possible to have it brighter and get great life, it depends on other parameters too.

No.. It was off the charger for the 5hrs not all screen on time. A little more than mod use. Setting up checking out stuff. I was not on it the entire time plus it would get hot while charging. I've have now a replacement on the way. It was getting hot around the top of phone, buttons and ear piece. I don't know just doesn't seem right. And about people putting brightness at 35-40 % is crazy.. At least on my phone its way to dark to enjoy.

An easy way to get that little extra batterylife is to unbox Googles right to get your position using WiFi. I discovered that during nights i lost about 8% even though my screen was off and i didn't use the phone, all due to that service. Now i Only loose 1% in 7-8 hours.
Typical use for me.
My Nexus 4 with the same usage patterns wouldn't last 10 hours, and I'm syncing 3 emails and all Google services. Color me satisfied.

I'm having the same problem as you. However my battery life out the box started out great. I could use the phone for almost two days without needing a charge. I "bent" the phone two weeks ago when I was trying to get it out of the quickwindow case and since then the battery life has been total crap. I barely get half a day off my phone with the same usage. I really don't understand whats going on with the battery.

part 2 fine tuning the battery.. 7 plus hours SOT

This should really help your screen on time note 20 ultra
7 hours should be the minimum out of the box for a very expensive flagship handset.
I have tweaked pretty much everything and still get around 5.
Emailed Samsung today for a return. Useless handset.

Ever think that maybe you've got a screen time problem? If you're on your phone for 7hrs a day it's time to put the damn device down [emoji1787]

It's not per day, it's per charge. So if you're only a moderate user 7 hours ST should give you a couple of days. My phone boots up at 7am and is dead by early evening.

My phone does 2 days easy if I'm at work. Otherwise, sure I probably have to throw it on the charger around 5ish because I've been facebooking and reading the news, I'd say it's far from useless anyways. And while I'm at work in usually using the Galaxy buds to listen to my podcasts [emoji1745]

It's kind of weird how a lot of people on Exynos versions are getting seriously bad battery life.. The other day I asked my daughter to watch all of her shows and stuff on YouTube on my Note 20 Ultra and asked her not to put it on the charger for any reason because I wanted to see what kind of screen on time I could get and I'm seriously getting close to 15 hours of screen on time and I am posting pictures below so people don't think I'm full of it.. At 24 percent battery life left it said I still had a little over 4 hours left and the total screen on time was 10 hours 37 minutes so if she had stayed awake for another few hours it would have been around 14/15 hours without a single charge!
I stopped worrying about screen on time 3 devices ago. Just use your phone normally as a normal person.

That's easy for you to say but some of us have to work and we can't be near an outlet all the time and we need to know exactly how much time we have available for doing important things.. Also, people who worry about their battery life doesn't make them "abnormal" like you're low key saying (Just use your phone normally as a normal person.")... It's great and all that you don't care about your battery life but this website is for help and other things so if you're not going to offer any solutions or anything of value then maybe you shouldn't say anything!
The main issue is that most of us (some long time Note users) are buing the phone because it is considered a powerhorse phone and advertised with a battery that "lasts a day". Most of us are using it like a normal person, that is one that use the phone in his/her daily tasks from browsing to mails, chats, watching videos or shooting photos or editing documents. Because THAT'S why we bought a Note and not a...dunno iPhone for ex.
And seeing that battery isn't in fact lasting a whole day on a 1300 phone we're "a bit" disappointed (and I was extremely polite saing that)

Seems Samsung is catching some heat over it's two chipset variants... again.
They need to stop doing this two chipset crap... Samsung is more fragmented than an old lady's Vista desktop.

Nice move, pay 1300 bucks for a smartphone and don't use because you want it's ****ty battery to last...
Still, the battery drain will destroy your battery, specially on exynos version
If you're on your phone for 7hrs a day and most people average 8hrs at work (obviously you use your phone at work) that leaves you 9hrs plus an hr or 2 (because your using your phone at work a bit) left to get home, cook, eat dinner, cleanup and sleep, I'd say your wasting a lot of your life. At this point the damn batteries have gotten good enough I'd say [emoji1787]

The Exynos 20 U is far faster than my 10+ with better ram too.
My 10+ was running hotter than the 1 ton deep fryer on the USS Missouri at one point.
It will take some time but you can get it running cool.
Nominal idle current should be about an average of 150-200 ma. Otherwise something(s) is dragging it down.
Get PD MDM and proceed... you will need to develop a good level of proficiency before you see lasting results.
*Bah-ha-ha-ha*, excuse me, I meant to say fun times are ahead
One reason I refuse to migrate to Q is I put some serious time into this system to get it optimized.
This 10+ was a real wanker... sure the 20 U and Q will be "better".
