Solution to DHD battery problems. Contact HTC!

Hey guys! I'm a new user on this forum and I also a completely new android user, I have just gotten the HTC Desire HD. And I'm really really enjoying the OS. The way you can customize the OS is amazing! And Therefore I feel like I have been missing out for a while.
However there is one single problem about the HTC Desire HD and sadly it's a pretty big problem. (You guessed it,) the battery life. I'm not gonna lie, if i cut some features i can easily get through a whole day. But whats the point of buying a phone with lot's of features if you can't use them, and whats the point of having a 4.3" screen if you can't have the brightness level at 50+.
To the point!
HTC have already made updated batteries that have a much higher capacity than the original batteries, these are for some of their other products.
(just look at the higher capacity HD2 batteries by HTC, they have a higher capacity than the original HD2 batteries.)
That's why i suggest that we all contact HTC and let them know that we are both aware and annoyed by the horrible battery. And then request a better and improved battery for the Desire HD.
If you look at their updates, they have a pretty good history of listening to their customers.
And if their customer service department get about 300 requests in one single day I am absolutely sure that we will see a result in a month or maybe even faster.
I live in Denmark myself and I've seen a similar thread in
a Danish forum and in two days time we have had 183 people send mails to the Scandinavian HTC customer service.
Now there is only about 2000 active users on that forum so that's pretty good for two days. And with such a huge success in a Danish forum, I'm sure a big forum like this would do even better!
So if you have the time to write a little email to the HTC customer service telling them about the poor battery life and then make a request for a better battery, I (and probably every DHD user) would appreciate it.
And even if you are one of those lucky users that can go for days without charging while having standard settings,helping us wouldn't hurt.

Well....although I do get your point, I am not sure that I, and probably other people as well, agree entirely on the 'horrible' battery life.
Yes, at first, it does look to have poor capacity when you get your DHD out of the box.
But remember, a lot of people, if not allm are using their new toy a lot the first couple of days.
If you browse this forum and the DHD topics you'll see that people report a lot better battery life after a couple of charges.
In addition to this, when you get into rooting and flashing, you'll see that users with custom roms, custom kernels and special profiles setup in Setcpu (like less Mhz usage when the screen is off) actually even get better battery life out if their DHD....
In essence, from what I have read, most people are able to use their DHD for one day without charging, which in my opinion, is quite acceptable, considering the size of the screen, the speed of the device and the possibilities and syncing going on....
If I sometimes read other cells'threads, it appears to me that the battery life on the DHD is not that far off, or even is better, than other top devices....
Having said that.....the effort you take I understand for sure, I just am not sure that HTC will do anything about it (as I think what we get is what we should expect)...

Where is the solution in that? Infact there is no solution its how it is

DHD battery life sucks.
There is no point defending it. Its a bloody mobile phone, it supposed to be able to work out of box, not a science project that u have to spend days tweaking it in order to last a day without the bloody adapter!
u can tell i m really crossed with DHD battery life...

If you mean 'it's supposed to have the best possible life the first time I fully charge it on day one' then, no it's not. You are wrong.

I just don't get it this was my first proper Android phone after coming from a HD2 and an iPhone 4 and the battery life is on par with both out of the box however simply reducing the time some apps sync I mean can you really not wait the 2 sec ish Twitter etc take to update? Really does improve battery life I have my screen set to 30% brightness which is more than enough if not you need specsavers not a new battery.
At a push I can get 2 days out of my DHD and I would say I'm a average to heavy user about 30 min calls 50 odd text and a couple of hours playing games surfing the net
Gadget show last night drained an iPhone 4 from full charge to flat in 2 hours using the layer app
I don't use setcpu etc I've just used some common sense.

well, i charged mine overnight, leave home at 7, phone dead most days by 5pm. u can defend the battery life as much as you want, and i m glad u like yours. less than 12hr of standard use makes any smartphone useless in my view.

I use iphone4 along side my DHD, almost identical setup in terms of sync and updates. when my DHD battery flat out in the afternoon, iphone4 has typically over 80% left.
I dont think it takes a rocket scientist to see DHD's battery is an issue.

Unplug mine from charging about midnight, get home from work between 18.30 and 20.30 and most nights I have approx 30-40% battery left, LiOn batteries need multiple charge / discharge cycles to get the best out of them so no phone is gonna be at it's best outta the box.

There seems to be massive difference in peoples experience with there DHD mine defo lasts as long as the iPhone 4 I had how yours can last less than 20% there must be something wrong

mine actually died last night (the first night i had it) i was a little surprised but i checked the battery usage and com.zxing..... used like 70%
lol it seems the barcode scanner didn't close and kept the camera on all night

I am a heavy user Facebook sync every hour a hundred odd texts a day few hours of internet browsing and I can get more than 12 hours mainly like 15 hours unplug at 7.30am and charge it 12.30am

it seems that some people have a very good battery life even with heavy use,and some don't. I am new to android having come from windows mobile. In winmo devices,the radio version on the device can make a difference to the battery life on similiar devices.maybe this is the same case on DHD because I noticed there are several version of stock roms with different built of radio image.

There isn't really a benchmark for "heavy user". I reckon its largely due to different interpretations. Throw the difference in batteries that are likely to exist due to the manufacturing process, and you'd get varying reported results.

why do people complaint so much about battery life of DHD and other smartphone. when you look at their capabilities, you wouldn't switch your laptop on an expect it to last all day. cause its a smartphone doesn't mean it can do everything for you!
if the battery really bad, then the is a fault i.e faulty battery,app which is eating up resources, radio constantly changing from 2g to 3g which i think one of the biggest drain on battery or a set up which just going to drain battery faster etc etc. These phone when "out of the box" are set up to show the phone off, so yes its going to have it all sing and dancing at you! with everything switched on why you taylor the setting to meet your needs. please don't come back and say "but yes why have i got a smartphone and then i have to switch off all these features" you don't but don't expect it to last all day.
sorry about the rant but i think some people just have unrealistic expectations how long a smartphone can last. people who complain that the phone cant last 24hrs, why would you want it to last that long?. you telling me you don't sleep in that period of time if you want a phone to last 2 days get a nokia 8950! an if your a person who uses it as a business phone, come on what do you expect? your a heavy user. use some sense, have it so you can charge on the go or a get a nokia 8950 as your business phone, an use your smartphone as your own phone.

True, but i honestly cant see why it would hurt to encourage HTC to make a new battery with higher capacity as a part of their accessory lineup for the Desire HD.

sorry yeah i do agree with you, that HTC sould bring out a higher capactiy battery and don't understand why HTC have not used a higher capactiy battery in first place. ive also have a X10(1500mAh) and BB storm2(1400mAh) both have higher capactiy, and X10 is the worst for battery life out of the 3 phones and DHD beats both these phone on battery life.
HTC have the reasons why they used that size battery for the DHD and if they do bring out a higher capactiy at least you can believe the claims of it being a 1800mAh, were these 3rd party batteries claim 1800mAh but really you only getting 1400mAh.
i was not aiming this rant at you, an im sorry, its to people that complain about battery life of todays smartphone and there expections of them.

Test it! You must not use more Power per Hour than 1%.If you are at 4% you do something wrong. In standby of course...

Did anyone manage to have 40hrs++ battery lifetime?

Dear People,
I am posting this out of big ENVY from my friend's story of his iPh*** 4 battery life with 40hrs ++ of usage (social network on, moderate usage, data always on, bla bla bla) and he still got 20% left of his battery!!!
I was just wondering did anyone managed to experience 40hrs ++ of battery lifetime? My best achievement with my nexus s battery life is
1 day 3 hrs with
MIUI Rom JB 2.8.17
Marmite Kernel 4.3
SmartassV2/deadline
100/1000
Automatic brightness on
Could we EVER achieved 40hrs ++ battery lifetime??? Since Iph*** 4 has practically same specs with Nexus S
It has 1Ghz procs, 512mb ram, 1500mah battery, bla bla bla

A very big advantage of the iphone is the very dim (to my opinion) screen backlight. If you change that to default 1 min instead of 20 on a custom rom, and then change your auto brightness values as well to lower ones your lifetime should increase alot. At least mine does. Also I use Llama to close mobile data after 5 minutes of sleep and then instantly turn it on on unlock. Anyway..we will never be able to win versus apple at some things. They have one operating system made for one device. We got one operating system for like..1 milion devices? That's the same story of console vs pc games.

Never used iOS devices before...So they have those kind of things hey..
I agree with you with the point that their OS was made for one device, while us is for millions

I've been getting pretty excellent battery life lately, will put up a screen shot but got almost 52hrs battery life with wifi and 3g on until it got to about 15% with about 2h 24m screen on time, although this was pretty light usage to be fair.
Using codename 3.3.2 with standard kernal, I turned NFC off and this seemed to help massively although I've also heard the new Maps app has solved some battery drain so not sure which has contributed the most.

52hrs?????? Cant wait for your screenshots man!

You may think the specs are the same, but the hw in the iPhone and power management is still superior. They get a push notification, even while the 3g radio is in idle and almost off (in which it saves more power). It's hard for Android to optimize the power management specially because of that many hardware variations, it's not only the CPU that counts.

Well, thats good to know, but since its the software differences (meaning coding and stuff), surely (i assume and hope) that we could also applied it (somehow) in our devices through tweaks, can we?

IMHO not much is possible since this is older hardware already and a question for how long will Google bother with it. It might be alot of work needed and you gain some insignificant amount of savings.
Would be nice to see some kind of power management tweaks in coming version of Android though.

well its halfly because android works differently and half way because of the hardware.
yes, the hardware is similar, but the nexus screen takes up more power, the processor is not very efficient, and nfc takes up power... also, the 3g radios are honestly HORRIBLE on the nexus s and that might have something to do with it.
but, the software side does make a major impact. iPhones do not multitask like android, which saves power on slower devices like the iphone 4. thats only half of it though, for instance, the iphone 4S has much worse battery life than the nexus s (by far). ROMs make a big difference also, I am very picky when choosing a ROM- if it doesnt have great battery life then I immediately replace it by another ROM that does.
I get on average about 16-20hours pretty consistantly if you are wondering, and I am OK with that as long as it makes it to the end of the day... I wake at 3:30 and normally it does. My advice is to experiment with different ROMs, I would suggest some, but I use an S 4G...

I don't really believe it. My friend has an iPhone and he uses it quit a bit and seems to have to keep it plugged in as much as I keep my phone. I think he said he usually gets about 8 hrs out of it. And the screen is pretty dull compared to mine so that might make a difference to

I always get a chuckle at the iHerd people I see on the bus holding their tiny screen 6 inches in front of their face so they can read it.
If battery life is really a concern get a couple of spare batteries and a charger.

Data was on all the time ? Ive got 33 hrs once but this is insane

I have achieved 50 hours on cna ... yes codename android but dang I forgot to take a screenshot of it I didn't have data on that time though

Lasting 40+ hours is easy if you don't use the phone much...
The screenshot was taken on a long weekend a while ago. I was busy during the weekend and didn't use my phone much apart from listening to music for no more than 2 hours.

Thats true, but from the iphone their data was on all the time, mid moderate usage.
But, just like some people said, power managwment chip, the os, makes big differences

I dont know if I can deal with battery issue with Nexus 4.

All the settings Ive tried dont work... Battery is so weak its not even funny...and no my phone is not defective but its just annoying with the battery. My N2 lasted 2 days with heavy use....how u guys cope with battery ?

You'll get a lot of replies from people saying they are delighted that with their battery life and claim that something is wrong with you.
From my experience with the Galaxy Nexus, I know that battery life with Android varies all over the place depending on how you use the phone and what apps you install. Install the wrong apps or get file corruption--that you can't pin down--the battery will drain just sitting there unused.
if you intend to keep the phone, I suggest getting a 12000mAH external power pack. Thanks Google for not allowing us to readily swap the battery.

Galaxy nexus 2 hour screen on time. Carried a spare battery. Nexus 4 close to 4 hours screen. I guess what I am saying is I can cope because I came from actual bad battery life.

My iphone 4s only lasts 8 hours with heavy use. Streaming movies, Sirius sat, games, web surfing.
This phone outlasts that so far with the same stuff.
But its terrible you should sell it.....

The battery has been so so for me. I'm hoping when a good kernel and Ron come it will be a lot better. I benefit from working in range of a outlet .

GS3 battery dominates the N4 battery even tho it has the same 2100mah size.
I guess the AMOLED >>> IPS LCD in terms of battery drainage.
Sucks! I guess the Nexus 4 battery life will be only slightly better than my One X =(

I swear guys I normally use same apps and on Note2 I was able to get day and day and half with heavy use and teo days with light use..but this N4 just drains battery like theres no tomorrow. Esp browsing internet..youtube..and other stuff that pulls a lot of data... The only way I can save battery is it i put brightness to almost zero and turn off wifi and data completely. I have all the normal stuff syncing and not often...facebook pulls data every 2 hours and other apps as well. I really love this device but WHY WHY WHY Google/LG decided to have non removable battery. I RESPECT Samsung so much more because they give you removable and decent battery and also give you SD card option which I can live without but its nice to have. I guess you get what you pay for.

GS3 most certainly does not dominate....
Amoled is only more efficient for blacks. Every other color it displays uses more power on AMOLED vs LCD. In fact, white uses 70% more power in AMOLED displays than LCD.

Watching 1hr video on Netflix over hspa+ at full brightness today dropped my battery from 80% to 29%. My galaxy nexus with the same use would have dropped maybe half of that.
Does that sound normal?
I'll be able to check if I have a defective unit pretty soon. I have a RMA for my earpiece speaker not working, but I'm literally stuck on a charger at all times, lol. I honestly don't really care about the crappy battery life, I still love this phone!
On the plus side, it seems to charge as fast as it loses charge, lol

What was the best phone battery wise you guys used or currenly use ? Blackbery 8300 for me. I charged it once a week...NO KIDDIN

I have owned mine since the 21st and I have noticed the battery to be on par with my S3 that is HIGHLY overclocked.... That being said, It could definitely be better! And the S3 has Verizon LTE so I don't know where all this drain is coming from... I use the same apps on all of my devices... Oh well! Time to get a good external battery...

Getting 3.5 hours screen on time here . with sync on , GPS on , screen 75% brightness. No issues here ,battery's great !!! " tweaking battery is waste of time . try letting it die charge it while off then another hour while on then pull charger , ( if anyone replies with letting die is bad your wrong , and u can send me all the links u want your still wrong

User error. You left a phone that has a massive 3100 mah battery for one with 2100.

My battery seems to be fine, previously I had a GSM GNex with the extended battery and my N4 has done just as well based off my usage.
I remove it from the charger around 7 a.m., use it all day for text, calls, browsing, emails. When I get home at 6 I am around 35-40% so I charge it for about 45 minutes to get me through the evening and then charge all night.
This routine has gotten me through virtually every phone I have had with a few exceptions (Treo 750 and SX-66 come to mind)

4.5 hours of screen on time is my average so far. Roughly 50% better then my Galaxy Nexus. Other than GPS remaining off, I haven't done anything special to conserve battery life. Not sure if I'm the exception, and I do wish I could swap the battery, but I can't complain too much.

[Q] Nexus 4 on order, arrival soon, what can I expect ;) ?

So, they have apparently sorted out the stock and supply problem. I <cough> borrowed the wife's credit card and have placed the order.
They say it will ship in 1 to 2 weeks, I can live with that.
The light-hearted question I have is, once I've gotten over the excited rush of playing with the phone for a while, what have your experiences been? Good or bad! I've heard that the battery life is not great but to be honest I am not so bothered with that. I have a charger and work, and home, in the car - I can even charge it at the pub/bar I go to

Keep an eye out for issues worthy of an RMA. From there, the only thing to expect is awesomeness. You'll want to calibrate the screen color and gamma, though.

Has battery life been that bad? Because I just ordered one myself to replace my wife's 3GS.

yes battery life is very bad on this device. in sleep/standby its great. but when you do something, it drains battery very fast. just 5minutes use and at least 10% are gone.

Utter tripe. You either have a rouge app, or you have the brighness turned up full or something else stupid.
I easily get a full day out mine with moderate use. It's about 50%-60% remaining when I get home in the evening from work.

I got around 3 hours of screen on time and a full 18-20 hours standby on stock rom with the usual useage of whatsapp and gmail syncing, with web use and texting etc, and now on custom rom, I am getting up to 4.5 hours screen on.
So, battery is good, phone is super fast and smooth, camera is great if you take time to learn how to use it and especially with HDR on and a bit of post picture editing. Only down side is music volume and quality which is average at best. In my opinion.

I think depending whether you are on WiFi or HSPA will make a huge difference for battery. From what I understand, when using HSPA, the standby battery life is horrible.

The screen is usually the single biggest threat to your battery. And the N4 can get 4-6 hours of "screen on" time depending on use. As others have said, it can be on standby for 15+ hours, but you can completely kill the battery in 4 hours or less if you are using a cpu intensive app.
Custom roms and battery saving apps can def help out though.

I ordered mine at 3pm on wednesday and it was with me by 3pm on thursday .. so slightly quicker than the 1-2 weeks they quote!

Unlock the boot loader, doesn't matter if you decide on staying stock or what. Having your boot loader unlocked right of the bat allows you to keep your apps if you do decide to root /flash.

You'll sadly probably find that the screen is *uneven* in it's tint (yellow probably) and brightness. Because it's uneven, "calibrating" will help a little maybe but will not fix any issues with the screen. On the other hand, with luck (which I wish you) you may find that your screen is pretty much perfectly uniform in brightness and tone top to bottom, left to right. (Check using the Mail app and minimise the keyboard) I've had 5 so far and none of them are acceptable to me. Otherwise the phone is truly incredible in use. Buttery smooth, responsive, great. The screen very generally is amazing too. It's just not even as it should be. Let me know how yours is - i'd be interested to know because if yours has good uniformity I'll order another. Good luck!

honestly, if they just put a 4000mAh in it, I wouldn't mind if it weren't replaceable. And I seriously doubt with the kind of perfomance/specs its gonna have, anyone would really mind the extra thickness either. Not to mention heft (cough, durability).

It's not how big the tank K is but how much less is sippped from the tank
Nexus 5 so battery is 75% if G2
But battery life on nexus 5 is far less than 75 percentage of G2 albeit having a smaller screen

it looks promising but i would take this article with a grain of salt. I want to see a article or a video with alot of apps and features turned on this reviewed. i believe that would be a real battery review

Still, LG hasn't outed official talk, standby, browsing and video playback times yet, so we can only guesstimate the battery life of the G3 to be pretty good, based on some tangential proof from improvised battery tests that are popping up.
First off, a prototype version of the phone has been put through its paces, and the phone lasted six and a half hours of video playback on a charge, as you can see from the screens on the right. That might seem average, but the test has been done at the screen's*maximumbrightness, which*LG officially pegs at 430 nits, instead of the usual 150 or 200 nits, so the result from standardized routines like our own battery test, are likely to be much higher.*
Also so the test was at basically 2× brightness of a normal screen. ... so at lower brightness it should do very well

Thanks to the removable battery I couldn't care less about battery life you can always take one or even two with you and go through half a week without ever needing to charge your phone good job LG :good:

Is it really nice to always have a secondary batt and most time having to turn off phone then replace. I quite don't like that and I don't see that very cute at all. Maybe it's how I feel but that for me just seems not right.

I would totally have taken a 3500mAh stuck battery like in G2(not impossible to remove after some years) instead of 3000mAh removable.

I never said 3000mAh isnt enough, but 3500mAh would last longer and most people dont run around with an extra battery in their pocket even if they can. Saving 1-2 hours of work to replace a battery like in the G2 after 1-3 years isnt really that much.

Of course they did, but they are catering to the people who are stuck in the old days when smartphones didnt last as long and batteries died much faster. Sure batteries degrade still, but if they hold longer between the charges and with more improvment it would be years between needing to change it. LG did the right thing with G2, but people arent smart enough to see it, so LG had to go back to the old ways to win the heart of the stuck.

Okay, what I'm saying is if they have thought then it'll make no sense for that regard. If so, then the 3000mAh batt along with their Optimization makes it enough to have that battery.
Like for example, there are different desktop power supplies but some of them are different quality. A 3 star 1200w quality desktop supply could be equivalent to a 5 star 800w quality supply.
